Man this is exciting! You’ve officially christened your new shop. The pencil in the slot is the new trash can trick shot. I really enjoy how you’ve incorporated the CNC but still doing stuff by hand. You’ve found such a good balance. I can’t wait to see what’s going to come out of this new shop!
Yep, this was the first of (hopefully) many! I really try not to lean on using the CNC too much, so I appreciate you saying that. It is fun to find a nice balance! Thank you as always!
Nice desk, I really like the modern take on an old school desk. Also...I always come for the woodworking but stay for the outtro...this one didn’t disappoint!!
When my template/pattern is too big for my xcarve, I just cut it in multiple pieces and glue it back together. There is only minimal sanding needed for the glue joint. I also sometimes have to glue on a small square of 1/8" ply over the joint to reinforce it.
When I do stuff that overhangs my xcarve that needs to be centered I use the center origin in Easel. They added it not to long ago and it's really handy for this and when you don't have the material width to side fixture (cutting all the way to the side of the material) Also this looks fantastic!
I know you can position the piece you are cutting over the origin point in Easel, but can you now actually move the origin point instead? That would be awesome. Thanks for watching, Carl!
Shaun, nice design- remarks only suggestions. What if the edges of the Baltic Birch were colored? Only the edges. Then a drawer front panel of some wildly figured spalted, quilted, ribboned, maple or some other figured white wood? Neat project, I think you could have cut the birch on the NC by indexing the 5' by sheet ripped to width?
great job! I was just looking for a project for making a desk for my daughter. In Russia, desks with varying sizes are popular. Your version of the classic of the genre!
Neat looking desk. The CNC certainly makes jigs come out faster and tidier. Interesting how you made the template. I figured you would have cut both halves of the template on the CNC then dominoed them together. Thanks for the video. Cheers, David.
Looks great. I think the drawer front needs a slight curve on the bottom to suit the rest of the design a bit better. The current boxy look doesn't quite match the rest of the desk.
Cool desk man, horizon line is a pretty cool add. Could have maybe done mitered edges on the drawer front and drawer side supports so it disappears a little more.
Very cool build Shaun! Definitely reminded me of the school desks of my youth (in the covered wagon days). Seems incredibly sturdy for such a minimal design. My only critique is the drawer - the rectilinear shape seems incongruous with the organic soft curves of the rest of the desk (sorry for all the $0.25 words). I'd consider moving the drawer front back so that it's hidden by the legs, or perhaps angling the drawer face at a 30-ish degree angle to better match the angle of the sides? My unsolicited $0.02. BTW - I LOVE adding the horizon line to the desk! I also like drawing my sketches in perspective, and always have to visualize the horizon in my minds eye. I'd love to scribe the same type of line, but since I do most of my work at the dining room table, my wife might take issue with that! Awesome work as always Shaun! Cheers on the new shop!
Thanks Steve! And you know what, I totally agree. The only thing I don't like is the drawer, so I am glad this is a shop piece. Might tweak it down the line before making it in hardwood or something. And yes, if I had to give any advice it would be to not cut a horizon line in the dining room table!
Shaun Boyd. Would you mind sharing the basic dimensions? I’ll sketch out a box and start cutting and shaping my sketch. I’ll make sure to share and tag you on whatever I make for attribution
The legs of the desk if turned over would be a great small table. This is an awesome diy project, if you can figure out how to flatten it and add some assembly required instructions. You could probably make some serious cash shipping to customers.
HI SHAUN, did you attached some channels to make the drawer soft closing ?? and would this design work if I wanted the leg thicknesses to be 18mm (3/4th of an inch) and not double the thickness ??
I just found your page and have done basically nothing since! I am working on my workshop right now, and this desk would be PERFECT in it. How do you feel about fans copying your designs (in particular, for those that you don't sell the plans for)? And since I don't have a Domino (and my wife laughed at my when I suggested it for Chanukah), would pocket screws from behind be sufficient for the cross pieces? Lastly, any suggestions for how to cut those legs on plywood freehand? Thank you!!!!!
Right on, man! Thanks for finding me! Yeah, I am totally fine with people copying my stuff, especially when it is just for personal use. Go for it! And yeah, I would imagine pocket screws will work just fine, though keep working on your wife for that Domino. And if you have a jigsaw, that would work just as well for cutting out the legs.
Man I can see the absolute versatility of a CNC for templates, I to stuff around on rounded cut outs with a file & swear words lol to try to get the shape correct, anyhow Tablesaw & Workbench are my places for design 😳, keep up the good work mate 🍻👍👍👍
Enjoyed this Shaun... can I just say I love the shop workhorse Baltic Birch... those beautiful tight plies, I just appreciate them. Any tips on treating the wood surface to reduce epoxy seeping into the surface to reduce sanding? Thanks again!
Yeah, Baltic Birch is one of my favorite materials to work with, it is just so consistent. I don't often do any sort of pretreatment before pouring epoxy. I imagine maybe a coat of polyurethane might help, though I wouldn't want to get poly into the void where the epoxy is going. I usually just try to be careful with my pour haha. Thanks for watching!
@@shaunboydmadethis Cool I can get them for a good price. I am building three foot, by three foot by one foot cabinets with Six draws in the top half two inches deep. They will hold precious hobby models in them, and the Blum Tandem soft-close slides will be perfect for them.
Thanks Paul! Really appreciate it! I usually use a wiping polyurethane for the plywood stuff. Baltic Birch has a tendency to splinter on it's edge, so I like to have a much more durable finish on these.
Brother Shaun, idk if you've ever been asked, but what are your shop dimensions. Some videos it looks really big, others it looks very narrow. I'm trying to determine how I want to lay out my shop. Edit: well now I see I missed a video of you getting a new shop...
Yeah, they are Blum Tandem slides with Blumotion (soft close). I use them on everything I make, so I had am extra set laying around. Thanks for watching!

Love it Shaun! Well done on the desk. I must admit, the desk looks great, but the drawer doesn’t seem to match design. Seems to just jump out. Just my opinion. Overall love the design! Keep it up homie.
Yeah, for the most part, I agree. If I ever decide to refine the design, the drawer will be the first thing to get some attention. Thanks for watching, man!
Yeah, I am excited to start using it. Thanks man! And believe it or not, I stuck the landing. I know it looks like I took a seat on the floor in the video haha.
Thanks! I initially started using it to be able to do 3D carving with my X-Carve, then I just got used to it, so now I am much more comfortable with it than I am with SketchUp.
I might have to attempt to make one for myself, but alter the design a bit so that the top has an adjustable angle. Something like a drafting table/desk of sorts.

Best music on RUclips, bar none. You da man Sean!
Thanks Jay! Picking out the music is one of my favorite parts.
You (and Greg) really did a great job on this desk!
Thanks! But let's be honest, it was mostly Greg.
I love this! Definitely giving me inspiration for a drafting table
That was the original plan for this one, and I still might try to figure out a way to tilt the desktop eventually. Thanks for watching!
Love that Ulmia workbench. Wish I had one.
Yeah, I love that bench. It was my grandfather's, so it has that sentimental value, too.
When I do stuff that overhangs my xcarve that needs to be centered I use the center origin in Easel. They added it not to long ago and it's really handy for this and when you don't have the material width to side fixture (cutting all the way to the side of the material)

Thanks David! That probably would have worked too, I just like having a solid one piece template. Which is probably me being overly fussy.
Looks great. I think the drawer front needs a slight curve on the bottom to suit the rest of the design a bit better. The current boxy look doesn't quite match the rest of the desk.
I agree. If I were to make another one, that is definitely what I would change. Thanks for watching!
