Another great project and inspiration. There's only one reason to say: thank you for watching, but there are thousands to say: thank you for sharing!
Really appreciate it, Matthias! I only need one reason to say it, so thank you for watching!
My father designed Hay Merchant and my brothers built it! Thanks for representing. They are currently re-working what used to be Underbelly next door.
No way, that's awesome! I love that place. It is always a must-do when I am in Houston. Tell your family they did a great job!
Man I enjoy watching your projects. Great humour, beautiful designs and honesty.
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Very cool project. Love the incorporation of the CNC to build your jig. I always watch til the end to catch your outtro and they rarely disappoint. Keep having fun. I’m a fan.
Really appreciate it, Scott! Glad you are enjoying my videos. Thanks for watching!
Shaun, for some reason I didn't get a notification about your last video and was having withdrawals thinking it had been this long between uploads! I got my X-Carve 3 or 4 years ago and has been totally game changing. It's cool to see you so quickly assimilate new techniques and technologies into such quality products but still maintain that "old school" mentality. This is a great blend of the traditional and contemporary craftsmanship. Can't wait to see what you do on future projects, cheers.
Really appreciate it! That is exactly how I was hoping to incorporate a CNC into my work, so I am glad it came through. They are a lot of fun, so I am looking forward to using it more!
Ups and downs and curves.... Great video, good job on camera
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
Interesting piece! I actually appreciate you showing your mistake on the bottom during your learning process. It can be encouraging to illustrate that mistakes will come about while learning new techniques. Thanks for sharing and making a new fan!
Really appreciate it, Ryan! Yeah, it is really easy to edit out any mistakes and make it all look seamless, but I think there is a lot of value in seeing where things can go wrong. Thanks for watching!
Dude, just keep the curves coming. The only reason I branched out from square design and started adding curves was because of your videos. You’re making a impact dude. Trust me!
Really appreciate that, man! That type of stuff is really one of the main reasons I started do the whole RUclips thing. There is just so much inspiration to go around!
Shaun Boyd that’s right dude. Trying to do my part as well but I’m new, so the subs are low. Hopefully one day I can get there.
-Jesse
Keep it up, man!
Brilliant Work and Amazing Editing, always enjoy the little snips from the movies!
Thanks for watching! The movie clips are one of my favorite parts, as well.
Lots of love for your work from India
Thank you!
i love when im watching one of shauns videos and im like wow this guys is a cool designer and a great woodworker and then he just slaps a fat jam on my eardrums and i gotta get up and dance
Haha, glad you are digging the tasty grooves. Thanks, Joe!
Late to the game, however, I’m enjoying your exploration of the x-carve, and your story telling abilities!
Thanks Ned! I am having a lot of fun integrating the X-Carve into my work.
Bend laminations ; cnc; lovely design and shaun Boyd unique sense of humor = a great vid:... cheers from Egypt
Really appreciate that! Thank you for watching!
Great build excellent video, but more importantly you kept the jokes down to a bearable limit which we are all grateful for. Keep up the good work
Haha, thanks Colin! My jokes kind of ebb and flow, so who knows, the next one might just be unbearable.
Beautiful work Shaun
Thank you! Really appreciate it!
Turned out really well Shaun! Makes me think of the steps to do a piece like that without the x-carve.
Thanks! Yeah, it could definitely be done, just would take a bit more elbow grease.
Awesome work Shaun! You said you were on the fence about the paint choice but I think the white really makes that beautiful walnut stand out. I dig it! :)
Thanks, man! Yeah, it does really help show off the Walnut, which is definitely a good thing!
That came out beautifully!!! I like the paint, myself. As soon as ye mentioned making a curved piece with the CNC, I also immediately thought, "What a perfect tool for jigs!" Nicely done!
Thank you! Yeah, I think jigs and templates are where I am really going to use it the most.
A very nice piece, well done.
Thank you!
Amazing video as always Shaun! The subtle use of CNC to cut the recessed parts for the bent lam is a great idea. I really need to do a deep dive with Lars to learn the 3D carving...that extra D opens up so many possibilities..
Thanks, man! And yeah, having that true 3 dimensional capability really opens the door to all sorts of stuff. I knew it would be a high priority once I figured out the machine.
This looks very familiar... did you happen to catch my video from a year before making this bent lamination? All the jigs and processes look very similar. Great job, by the way.
Thanks for watching. Nope, haven't seen your video, though I'm not surprised two people (and probably quite a few more) came up with similar ways to accomplish this.
Awesome video! That table looks fantastic!! And thank you for the shoutout :-)
Really appreciate it, Lars! And thanks for making such informative and easy to understand videos about Fusion! I would have been lost without them.
great project. i have bern using xcarve for two years and love it, but have only done easel. If you can make 360 work as an import, I should also.
Thank you! Yeah, I was really happy with how easy it was to import from Fusion straight into Easel. Give it a try!
Well done sir. Good use of your new CNC! I love your videos' format as well: entertaining while still being instructional and thoroughly inspirational. Keep up the good work.
Really appreciate it, Brian! Thanks for watching!
I really dig both your work and your videos. Thanks for the consistently good content.
Really appreciate it, I'm glad you enjoy my work! Thank you for watching!
Your walnut bent lamination made me think of the great David J Marks and his old Woodworks show on DIY. I love your project and the foil of the white enamel paint against the gorgeous walnut. It's neat to see the use of MDF. Very cool. I think I might go curvy, man. 😉
Really appreciate that! Yeah, I was really wanting an obvious contrast between the base/top and the curve, so I am glad to hear it came through. Thanks for watching!
I was expecting (and actually waiting for) "learning curve"... nice job Shaun!
Haha! I was actually going to use that one when I posted on Instagram because I was so bummed I didn't use it in my video! Thanks for watching!
I watch these vids as much for the story, the great jokes, awesome music, and yeah side benefit of great woodworking! :)
I really appreciate that! It is a constant goal to include all of those elements in my videos.
great job! I'm a fan. Greetings from Brazil!
Thank you! Really appreciate the support!
Hi, just watched this on the makers central website and really enjoyed it so now subscribed and looking forward to watching now of your videos. Thanks
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching and following along!
Shaun, Love the video man. This is exactly what I was waiting for... how will Shaun use this cnc machine without going crazy overboard. You mention right away looking to strike a balance between hand and machine. Like others have said, there is a way about you I really enjoy... smart, thoughtful and deliberate. Really enjoyable. Please keep going.
Man, I really appreciate that! That is exactly what I was going for with this piece and with my overall feeling toward incorporating a CNC into my work. I'm really glad that came through. Thanks for watching!
Your films are great to watch
Thanks, man!
A very innovative design. The springy aspect could be useful for seated reverse cowgirl, I should imagine.
Haha, might have to shift my marketing strategy for this one! Thanks for watching!
Ive always enjoyed seeing curves within a design. I made a figured/burl maple slab side table 20 yrs ago using bent laminated walnut & maple legs. I was able to get away with a 1/4" thickness on the walnut. I should have went 3/16 max - it was a hard bend lol... I still use the table. It does have a wobble after all these yrs - maybe time for a refurb... Excellent design Sir..! If you ever need router templates for odd shapes check out mobile solutions online. With your " out of the box " designs what they offer could be useful.
Always fun to see how far you can push it! Definitely want to give this one another shot at some point and see if I can get it a little more solid. Never heard of mobile solutions, but just checked out their site, pretty cool. Thanks!
@@shaunboydmadethis It seem your on the right track towards stability. IDK maybe instead of using one layer of mdf try laminating two together then use your cnc to dish it out to except the lamination... Sorry I had a brain fart... Lol... Heres another idea - Instead of making a "C" shape half round, laminate the walnut into a 2/3 or 3/4 circle. It will be a pain to remove from the form unless you tape wax paper to it so slides off easier... Just my thoughts. Keep up the out of the box designs. Damn had another idea hahaha lol... With the lamination past half circle if you run into stability issues maybe run a straight piece of copper pipe or three in between the to ends of the walnut...
beauty! next time the circles out of maple or baltic birch ply?
Thank you! Yeah, I wanted to try something different for this one, but maple would be more my style.
Very nice bent lamination project. I think the color for the top and bottom looks great. The color could be changed to fit your room colors.
Thank you, really appreciate it! Yeah, that is the nice part about paint, totally customizable.
Looks sweet, Shaun. Great proof of concept.
Thanks, man! I'm really happy with how it came out.
Great project thanks for sharing! Definitely my favorite RUclips channel
Really appreciate that, Scott! Thanks for the support!
Remember: there will always be a learning curve when you’re learning curves.
Man, ain't that the truth!
Definitely impressed with how you were able to figure out fusion so fast, even after watching some of Lars videos I can't get it lol
Haha, I learned just enough to be able to model the table. Pretty sure I could study for the next year, and still not be able to use it to it's full capacity.
Awesome video! I know I'm a year late to this...
Did you observe any loss of the curve in the bent lamination over time? (i.e. did the laminations want to straiten out)
Thanks Thomas! This table is in my buddy's apartment, so I see it pretty often and I haven't noticed the curve straightening out at all. And I imagine if I had given it a few more laminations to thicken it up and lessen the amount of bounce, it would be even less likely for something like that to happen.
@@shaunboydmadethis thanks for the response, keep doing what you do inspiring woodworks!
Vejo sempre seus vídeos, muito bonito esse trabalho legal! Brazil.
Obrigado!
Nice job! Looks great! Thanks for sharing the process!
Thank you for watching!
any chance you would share your code for the pocket to nest the curve?
Hey Shaun another great video. I'm working on an white mdf and walnut frame for a magic mirror. I've been struggling with painting the mdf. I've watched a few videos, but was wondering what your process was and what sealer/paint you used. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Honestly, I didn't love how the paint turned out. I'm sure if I had spent more time with it, I could have gotten a better result, but I just used the Ace Hardware gloss enamel paint. All I did was seal the edge of the MDF with wood glue, then sanded it smooth and painted. It looks good from a distance, but when you get up close you can start to see the flaws.
Got it. Thank you again!
Beautiful piece. Nice job editing. Great story telling. : )
Thank you! I really appreciate that!
I'm always looking froward to your videos! Thank you for producing awesome content!
Really appreciate it, John! Thanks for watching!
Should try Fusion too! But first some house building and gardening works is on the list! Great round bent, time perfect spent :)
Yeah, definitely add it to the list! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic piece, Shaun !
Thank you!
Precioso, Enhorabuena, buen trabajo
Muchas gracias
Great stuff Shaun
You will soon need a bigger work shop
Thanks, Steve! Yeah, I am starting to feel a bit cramped these days.
You should try to S-type bend, I think it will look nice.
Good idea! That could be pretty cool.
The Hay Merchant in Houston?!? LOVE that place! We're in there at least once a week. 👍🏾
Nice! My sister used to live in Houston, and that was a must-do every time I was there. Such a good spot!
Awesome. What ratio did you use for your epoxy? Thx.
Thanks! That stuff is a 2 parts resin, 1 part hardener mix.
yes. enjoyed it once again. the slo-mo spray paint shot made me laugh out loud. keep on rockin' it.
but wait -- you didn't lay down on top of it!
Haha, I was worried it would bounce me across the room! Thanks for watching!
Toujours aussi bien cette vidéo. always as well this video.
Merci!
This is a nice table, if you made the bend part a little thicker and make the bottom and top out of like maple it would be an exceptional table. Good proof of concept.
Thanks, Emily! Yeah, that is probably exactly what I would do if I were to make another one.
another great video 😀 ... as always ... Im also want to try out bent lamination one day... ..maybe a smaller project... thank you so much for this video 😀👍
Thank you for watching! Definitely give it a try!
Beautiful build!
Thank you!
Great video. After using it a while, do you think the x carve will work for cutting/carving your sculpted chair seats?
Thanks! Yeah, definitely. I am actually hoping to do a few test carves pretty soon.
Nice job! You are a genius.
Thank you!
HELLO SHAUN !!! QUESTION WHICH IS THE WHITE PAINT YOU USE?
Hmm, that is a good question. Maybe some type of Rustoleum glossy white paint? Sorry I don't know for sure!
Cool project and filming too. Did you experience any movement when table is under "load " like bowing ? Or it's manageable. Cheers
Thanks, man! The table is a little bouncy, so I would definitely thicken the curve if I were to make another one. But it is definitely usable as a side table to hold drinks or books or whatever.
Shaun Boyd I thought about that . It can act as a spring. Even if it's super shaking I would use it .. it's something different and built with your hands. Keep up the good work
Well done that mythical beast😉😉
Haha, should have thrown in a "let's talk about that". Thanks, man!
Well done, thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming!
Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Nice work!
Thank you!
This kind of equipment is going to get woodworking into new dimensions, great example, and again, so elegant.
Do you know mtmtwood, he makes chessboards and cuttingboards with very intricate decorations using a similar machine. Unfortunately his video's are only in Russian.
And about the curves, I couldn't resist adding this quote from 1974, my days of old:
Guess Who, Clap for the wolfman:
Long as you got the curves,
I got the angles
Thank you, Tielo! I think you are right, it is pretty amazing technology that is becoming more and more accessible, which is exciting. I have seen some of mtmwood's videos. His cutting boards are mind blowing. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful project, Shaun. Thanks for sharing!
In case you do want to delve into that kind of planning, I believe the software you used to model the table offers finite element analysis which could help get to a more stable thickness for the bend.
Design-wise, I'm curious about your decision to have the bottom piece's edge rounded, while the top one got chamfers. Was it deliberate or more of an experimentation?
Cheers!
Thank you! Who knows how far I will get into the who digital design thing, but so far it has been a lot of fun. Doing the round over on the bottom and chamfers on the top was maybe deliberate experimentation haha. I like to throw in a bit of variety with edge detail.
Interesting piece of furniture!
Thanks, Jolien!
👌👌👌👍👍👍 fantastic, beatiful...congratulation
Thank you!
Nice throwback to the Blendtec videos of old. Hey, another good one to check out is my buddy, DNhandcrafted here on RUclips. He has some good ones about Fusion. Interesting process. I might be with you...not sure about the paint.
Haha! Glad somebody caught that! I'll check out DNhandcrafted, there is so much to learn with Fusion, it's crazy. And yeah, I like little pops of paint here and there, but not sure I love it so much on this one. Thanks for watching, man!
I was hoping he was doing blendtec/ and am happy I found confirmation. Oh, saw dust, don't breath this.
A very successful first attempt, I'd say! Nicely done buddy :)
Thanks, Matt! Always fun to try something new.
Thank you Shaun.
Thanks!
Not really a fan of CNC in woodworking but I like your videos, so I watched and gave a thumbs up man. If you didn't have the CNC, how would you done the base and top? You said you might make the curve thicker and was just trying the paint so if you build one again do you think you might make the top and base out of Maple? I think it would look good together. Anyway, Have a great week and looking forward to what you make next.
Really appreciate it! Yeah, I think CNC has a place in woodworking, but it can easily be overused. I thought the pockets in the top and base were a good place to use it because that would have been hard to cut that accurately by hand. Probably could have set up some sort of router jig, but it seemed like a perfect job for the CNC. And yeah, I am a big fan of Walnut and Maple, so that is a combo I would go for.
Thanks Shaun! Yeah router jig would have been the next choice but you're right it was a good opportunity to play with your new toy Lol. Walnut and Maple are my favs also. Just scored some live edge Walnut slabs for $2 a board foot! 8/4 and 10/4, 50bf of each, now to figure out what to make.
Looks great. Your secret about the base is safe with me.
Phew, really appreciate you not telling anyone. Thanks for watching!
Nice one Shaun - that was crazy (bentlam) cool!
Thanks Rob! Always trying to keep those bentlams cool.
If T-Pain got away with rhyming Mansion with WiscAnsin, you're good with the outro. Cool video, really enjoyed watching the bending process.
Haha! That makes me feel better about my bad rhymes. Thanks for watching, man!
Great job.
Thank you!
Thanks ! Nice work !
Thanks for watching!
You built a large spring, of course it's bouncy! Just kidding, really cool project! I was surprised how well the CNC was able to cut the curve of the pocket from the angle it was cut. I never think about router bits being able to cut curves vertically
Haha, I know! I realized that as soon as I set the top on it. And yeah, I was amazed at how well it cut those curves. Thanks for watching!
Seems like it might get a bit "tippy" with a load on it .. (Top heavy with a tendency to fall??) As for bouncy, you wouldn't notice it from across the room, silly.I would probably have added blocks of walnut to widen the bottom and top and blow your whole concept .. Good stuff Shaun. Love your videos.
Thanks for watching, Clyde! It is actually really stable as far as tipping over goes, the big base helps with that. But I think you are right, with just regular side table use, the bounciness will probably barely be noticeable.
great idea👍
Thanks!
Shawn - Brilliant video!
Excellent videography.
Wonderful music accompaniment.
Superb narrating easy to follow and understand.
You're a genius! :))
spelling error, *Shaun* sorry :))
Thank you very much! I am glad you enjoyed it! And no worries on the spelling error, it has happened my entire life. I don't even think about it at this point.
Did he just tell me to stay curvey? Fine. I'll remain this way and cancel my fitness goals because Shaun Boyd made this.
Haha, I say throw out those 2019 resolutions and stay curvey!
Hay Merchant! Love that place :D
Right on! Such a good spot!
Another great video. Never mind the bounciness, I’m disappointed that you didn’t do your trademark lie down on the finished project😂
Haha, I might have just bounced right off the top! Thanks for watching, Neil!
nice good mythical morning intro
Haha, when I shot it I was thinking of the “will it blend?” videos from a while back, but the GMM reference was a nice coincidence too!
Groovy Curvey
Right on! Thanks!
And to the final i was really only thinking if he is going to lie/sit on it also.
Haha, not this one! Didn't want to get bounced across the room.
Great job brother, like always enjoyed your videos and talent.
Just not sure about staying curvy...😄😄
Haha! That is fair. Thanks for watching!
bend it like boyd!
Now I just need to figure out how to make money like Beckham!
Yer a goof ball, I love it! Beautiful table man. Keep learning at stay...curvy? 🤓
Haha, thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant!!
Thank you!
Fantastic.
Thanks!
I really like your video.
Thank you!
Beats by Boyd 🎧
Haha, hopefully my head never gets big enough to fit. Thanks for watching!
Nice!
Thanks!
hahahaha, dude your my fav... keep them comming
Thanks, man! Really appreciate it!
maravilhosooooo!
🙌🙌Obrigado!
every time you got me :D in the end
Haha, glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
