  • ABOUT THIS VIDEO
This was a fun and extremely challenging build! And it makes sense that I made more mistakes building this than probably any other piece I have made in the past. I tried a lot of new things like using PSA veneer, using our vacuum bag to make a bent lamination, and some new push-to-open drawer slides! On top of that, there are all sorts of cool brass details to finish it off. Hope you enjoy watching!

    Beautiful design, Shaun.
For dry fitting with dominoes, this is a trick that works for me.. . Buy the domino sticks. Rip off the tapered edges to make them a little narrower. Run the stick through a drum sander or planer, taking off only a hair. This makes them just thinner than the mortise. Draw a sharpie line on the flat part of the stick. Now you can cut them to lengths as needed, and the sharpie indicates that these are your dry fit dominoes. I have a box of these of various lengths. They are much easier to remove when dry fitting. The cost of a few sticks has saved me hours of frustration.
Thanks for your videos. I always enjoy watching your process.

Shaun, very nice to have your channel back - always was one of my favorites.
Here's my secret for pulling Domino's. Use a claw hammer and channel locks. Place the forks off the hammer on either side of the domino, grab the domino with the channel locks, and lever the hammer up. Easy as pie. Regular pliers would work, but the offset of the channel locks makes it easier.

Tips for removing tricky this like domino’s, Pair of mole grips with a foot length of stud in the back ( were adjuster bolt is then a piece of metal stock with a hole in for the stud to go in then just a nut on the end. You can the grip the mole grips to what you are trying to pull out and quickly slide the metal stock up the stud hitting the nut. Result is a handy slide hammer that can grip multiple things really well. Saved me many times in the injection mould industry with plastic mouldings stuck in hit tools!

    Hi. Interesting piece.
Hopefully some helpful info. The peel and stick veneer really needs a sealed surface to get a good bond. Applying to raw wood is asking for a bond failure. Also, peel and stick veneer was developed for cabinet refacing, and has no business being used in fine furniture. It will not withstand the test of time. You want to move to one of the many glues that can be used in your vacuum bag, and do all veneering of curved parts in there. This is a long piece, and not easy to make in one continuous piece, but you could break it up into two more manageable pieces, one straight, and one straight with the full curve (plus a little extra for trimming.) That would mean a bigger bending form, but would allow all sections to be done in the bag with proper adhesive and clamping pressure.
Keep pushing yourself and having fun.
    Jarred Kaiser

Yes, it’s a pain in the ass when something goes wrong, but at least you learn a lesson and improve each time and, hopefully, it’s less likely to happen again. Hosever, I was quite surprised to see you using PSA veneer in lieu of shop made veneer which you could have glued to the bendable plywood in your veneer press. But the way you did it was faster, so I guess that's why you went that route. Another significant time saver was your drawer box construction method. To my way of thinking, given that you had a very unique design, you should have used dovetails or, at the very least, box joints. But, that's how I build furniture, which isn't for everyone.

Christmas, alone in workshop with tools and materials. Let me know when you get to the sad part.
Before I get to the aesthetics of which surface to apply a veneer first or last, I look at the physics of the functional use. That edge where people move while they seat themselves or get up, and where they put their hands for that purpose, is precarious because a lot of chance for abuse and wear, and lifting veneer. So a solution that puts more material and more durable material on that edge might be a solution. That is, veneer both surfaces (probably the curved edge of the side surface first because you can flush trim the side veneer before adding and trimming the top/face veneer), then rout the edge for hardwood binding, and bind like a guitar top. And then trim the binding flush to both surfaces. Then both veneer edges are protected. It can also be a decorative component with contrasting wood or finishing.
