If you are still confused about how it works, I really recommend watching the original VOD, because Karolina explained it really nicely. The editing on this might be too fast-paced if you actually wanna learn Shogi. I know because I watched the VOD before this video even came out
For me the biggest difficulty is keeping track of the pieces. I can't read kanji so it's all just noise, and it's hard to get the meanings to stick
@@kaldo_kaldo most online tools also have alternative symbols for the pieces. They either replace them with the letter the English translation of the piece begins with, or a symbol representing how the piece can move.
Though I'd say that after playing a few games you should be able to recognise the pieces.
Like when playing a new card game it will also take a few games before you memorised what winning hands are. It takes a bit of time but is doable
What is a VOD? And where can I find it?
@@VAL3NTIN3 prob some nerd shit who cares
Joey got me into Mahjong, and now I am about to get into Shogi because of you. Thanks a lot mate, now I have more to do with my free time and keep up the great work
😂 this is your goal for 2022!!
Hi, I'm not Joey obviously but if I think you should give GO a try if you like those games.
same
I got into Kaiji which in turn got me into Akagi and now I play mahjong every day
@@zilongma5067 Yup, Go is really a very good game.
The 2 hardest things for me to learn in shogi was:
1. The drop mechanic, because I often forget about my captured pieces.
2. That satisfying tap sound you hear when watching professionals play. I don't even know how many times I accidentally hurt my finger by trying to imitate that. I can do it now tho.
the tap is the hardest part of playing this game
Editor clearly needs a raise
yeah the editing is very very good
Pee?
ig its joey himself
@Nadea true mudan a goat but he does overedit sometimes
@Nadea a tad yeah
Been dying to see western-friendly coverage on shogi. After learning it I've found it massively more enjoyable and exciting than chess. Trash Taste shogi tournament onegaishimasu.
What bot do you train with? I find the mobile app shogi have either too easy or too hard bot.
@@Crustee0 Yep, that's a big issue. Using Kanazawa Shogi 2, and the bot is brutal. Like 300 difficulty settings and it starts at Murder. :-P
@@HypnoGenX Then i guess the 300th difficulty is maybe 3million tsar bombs dropped down at once?
More mahjong and shogi please 👍👍👍
I really like it
Need more shogi content like this please. Would love to see your progress and quest to beat the master.
Didn't expect Karolina here. Greetings from Poland
Your editor, Joey, is top notch. You better hold onto them for dear life because they are damn good, but you knew that last part.
DON'T LET GO!
YEAH!! the editing was insanely good for this video 😮
love the editing
How interesting I finished watching sangatsu no lion and I'm currently reading the manga then this shows up 🧐
So how many times did you cry ?
@@enjoyereheheh zero I always smiled at the emotional scenes they were so beautiful but in the first episodes I teared up a bit when I saw Rei it was really depressing
Coincidence I think NOT :0

Ah shit here we go again
Tears dropped
Fart was farted
and pants was shitted
My Sangatsu no Lion heart is so happy to see shogi content, I have tried to learn as a result of it…
Same, I even bought a Shogi board as souvenir when visiting Japan because of it ! Still in the "tried" to learn phase though :D
and my hifumi togo energy is rubbing off
Joey is getting people into Shogi but got me out of it. I tried to learn it after watching 3月のライオン (March comes in like a lion) then I saw him playing chess and thought "fuck it, I'll start with something easier".
I didn't give a flying fuck about shogi but damn was the rest of 3gatsu no lion one of the best things i've ever watched
@@Gummylongtail so u do give flying fuck about shogi
Watching shogi as a chess player I can say that placement of stolen pieces is fkn insane
it is possible to do this with bughouse
Shogi is like checkers & chess’s genius offspring and it’s very interesting ngl
Joey does anything random.
Sensei: so this is an actual strategy.
lol she learned it through naruto I learned it through watching "March comes in like a lion" a shogi based anime its actually good if anyone wants to watch!
Joey doesn't like chess that much so he wasn't playing in the chess tournament.
Joey proceeds to learn Shogi aka Chess on crack.
Imagine trying to beat your chess teacher in a couple of hours of playing but your starting lesson is learning how the pieces move. That's Joey.
0:36 "Wait, you learned (about) Shogi through Naruto?" "Yeah" "Well, then" You can hear the disappointment in Joey's voice 😂
BTW there is short anime about her: Susume, Karolina !
That spawn mechanic is nuts.
It's starting to feel like a Protoss mirror match in StarCraft.
I found lishogi several months ago and I've been playing shogi daily. Its hella fun
Would LOVE to see more shogi stuff in the future!
Sangatsu no lion vibes~
Ho....souyokoto ka! Omoshiroii
I love how the most professional Shogi player is... Polish based off of her name and her accent. That gives me some National pride
Iirc he at the very top of shogi world, but still a really good and i think even pro level player. But for international/english shogi content? Yes she is really good compared to other youtuber. Theres this other youtuber that i used as reference to learn the rule a bit more in depth, but he is japanese so sometimes its a bit hard to understand what he says.
Indeed, Karolina Styczińska is Polish and she's an absolute unique person.
This video is just a show to promote Shogi (this man will never win against a real Shogi professional 😊).
The world of Shogi is difficult to enter and even harder to stay in. All professional Shogi players are employees of the Japanese Shogi Association. There are certain age barriers and the selection is brutal, players must leave if they don't make the expected progress. Women are professionals in the sense that they are employees and paid for their playing, but they have their own league system.
Apart from that, there is an open league system (for men AND women) with 9 master classes, and in Japan only the players of the highest 5 classes are considered as the "real professionals".
As far as I know, there was never a female player such highly ranked, and as far as I know Karolina is the only non Japanese person that became a woman's professional. 😮
This game is still too Japanese. I live in the second largest city in Germany and even here there is no Shogi club (I learned Chess in 1964 and prefer to play against "real" people. 🧙♂️)
👍🙋🏻♂️
Your Sensei was really funny and swag, Joey! Would love to see you play Shogi again :D
An English shogi video! Nice.
YES!!!!
Now I know why kiriyama rei is depressed as fuck
Wow! Joey play SHOGI with Karolina styczynska.
march comes like a lion flashback
Joey should have pulled the climbing silver on her, that would have worked. Certainly worked for Asuna.
yeeesss 😆
I'm calling this "January Comes in Like a Lion".
hell yeah! I've been waiting for this for so long since the Tournament Arc in Trash Taste
Idk if anyone will ever read this, but there are a few Shogi worlds in vrchat. You can drag your friends there and teach them how the pieces move, and the chaos begins from there xD
Omg a polish girl on your channel Joey. I am so happy ❤️
Omg, someone from Poland on Joey's Channel! :O
I remember I watched a series on youtube about shogi with like 50 episodes from, idk, before 2010.. so that's how I learned it
Was it from Hidetchi? I think that's the one. It may be old but it's still one of the best. That's actually where I learned shogi myself.
Ah didn’t expect there for Karo to be here. Good to know she’s been able to cooperate with content creator to spread the joy of shogi
The only way to beat a master is by draining their mental stamina and driving them to insanity.
This is exactly how my first chess match against a friend who knew way more about chess than me (they knew strategies and traps, I was still learning how the pieces moved). Basically since I had no clue what traps were, I was inadvertently avoiding every trap she put down without thinking (I think it was just luck). I was also an asshole and I would move my pieces back and forth from one position back to the previous if I didn’t know what to do. She basically was so flabbergasted by my shit techniques that ended up working.
Edit: I do know more about chess now and I’m not an asshole when I play
Just shuffling your pieces around when you don't know what to do can be pretty powerful in chess
Only works if the "master" u speak about is just slightly above beginner level haha. For appropriately skillful player they will either crush you immediately or just handicap themselves to help you learn
She has some persona 5 Hifumi vibe going there.
Now i can finally understand Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru a little more now
exactly what i was thinking too!!
Finally someone mentions it. Now I can understand why Ayumu can’t beat senpai
Didn't really understand much but all i knew was how good and funny Joey's editor is
Am I hearing good!? POLISH POWER!!!!
Still. Nobody can beat Veldora, when it comes to shogi
100% agree!! 👌
this video has more editing effects than any of joey's main channel videos
Hope you can give Go/Baduk a go someday (sorry about the pun). It’s a very easy game to get into (but very hard to master)
yeah, i never realized how complicated this game is till now!!
I would love to watch that. :D
That was actually pretty cool. I only vaguely knew shogi from anime - I had no idea it was so similar to chess
Joey playing my favorite board game lessgo!!
Love to see more Shogi, I started getting in to it because of Yakuza Kiwami got quite good by following guides, but it kind of reminds me of playing fighting games, once you take a long break you have to relearn it again.
I didn't expect to hear a Polish surname in this vid lol
The Shogi Man
He sacrifice...the ROOOOOOOOOOKKKKKK
What a brilliant move
Now, this. This is the kind of content..like, typically you. Nice work, Joey. Not gonna try this though, I AM afraid I'd lose my touch in regular chess after looking at this for a while 😁
I need this lesson to play shongi in yakuza kiwami
I knew that Joey will one day get into Shogi cause Sangatsu no lion
I immediately thought of Shikamaru! 💀
She's literally a irl manga character, did some googling and the backstory is fascinating.
Joey needed to put his hands together to win like Shikamaru
I just started watching 3-Gatsu no Lion a few days ago and Joey uploads this video.
Hey son,
Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying this new content. Keep up the good work, sport
This is Giving me hella hifumi and joker vibes from Persona 5
😮Best of luck with your main channel.
Happy new year🎉
The editing is offensive to my brain. I like it.
The editing in this video is top notch
Karolina Styczyńska is a great teacher. Ive seen an interview of her before but not so much of the game.
I GOTTA TRY SHOGI while i'm living in Okinawa 🐠 Japan!! IT LOOKS SO INTENSE 😂 Good Japanese language practice too
2:03 It's "fourth file rook"
I know this is unrelated, but look up oath of the goat by ill bill and vinnie paz, the reason I say this is because they sampled the theme song from higurashi on that track.
This will really help with those Yakuza completion lists
This was really nice and interesting 👀 and she explains so good xD
0:04 Man, how difficult is it to get a chess set image where the pieces are set up correctly - QUEEN on COLOUR guys
Great video Joey
Wtf the Queens Are not even in the same lane between White And black
@@ondatracze4582 The black pieces are set up correctly but not white - It's funny/pathetic actually how often I see chess sets in store that are set up wrong
0:28 same lol
Who ever is editing the video congrats. You are the meme lord
How you gonna have all those persona edits, but not have any reference to Shogi bae Hifumi ?...
Yeah, I was wondering that as well! It would have been so fitting!
7:28 LOOL
I like that Joey's really getting into the cultural games of Japan. So many great games. Is Go up next?
Hyakunin Isshu karuta
Q_Q I can see the future, joey will end up having to kill sensei with a forbiden movement to get the ultimate technique then an older kohai will hunt joey and avenge sensei xD and it will be only 2 seasons of 12 episodes. n_n
This truly is chess on crack
😂 exactly what i was thinking too!! looks so intense and a lifetime to master
I need more shogi content from this guy istg.
AKA, how quickly can u beat Shikamaru?
"I going to beat you in three moves"
Shogi Harbour Villain Arc confirmed
Idk whats wrong with me but I really enjoy this kind of editing where it just spams random overused memes
Helped me to beat noob level in Yakuza 0 game
I just started march comes in like a lion today and get this recommended. Joey is on spot
0:07 LMAO
I loved the Mahjong stream
Glad to see you in your joey channel
The persona layout is epic
I'm surprised no one has reference 3-gatsu no lion
I play shogi because of Pop Team Epic lol
Editing is fire🔥
He beating up the final boss
recently tried it out for the first time as well, this was some enjoyable repetition
ngl that joey channel picture is fire af
thanks jeffs broad
Joey got Kiriyama'd, lol!
Can she fight alone like shikamaru did?
Trash Tase Shogi Tournament Special ??? LESSGOO
when watching 3gatsu no lion i had no idea wtf was going on most the time. I just knew the pieces were moving in spots
This seems way more complicated than Chess
It is. Its just a pity my first gateway app had pretty bad bots thats either too strong i dont know what and when i did smth bad or its too easy that i dont notice moves werent optimal enough
I did not expect to hear someone from my country on the English side of RUclips
I loved this vid so much! You should try learning Go lol
