    If you are still confused about how it works, I really recommend watching the original VOD, because Karolina explained it really nicely. The editing on this might be too fast-paced if you actually wanna learn Shogi. I know because I watched the VOD before this video even came out

      For me the biggest difficulty is keeping track of the pieces. I can't read kanji so it's all just noise, and it's hard to get the meanings to stick

    • @sinom
      @sinom 2 года назад +14

      @@kaldo_kaldo most online tools also have alternative symbols for the pieces. They either replace them with the letter the English translation of the piece begins with, or a symbol representing how the piece can move.
      Though I'd say that after playing a few games you should be able to recognise the pieces.
      Like when playing a new card game it will also take a few games before you memorised what winning hands are. It takes a bit of time but is doable

    The 2 hardest things for me to learn in shogi was:
    1. The drop mechanic, because I often forget about my captured pieces.
    2. That satisfying tap sound you hear when watching professionals play. I don't even know how many times I accidentally hurt my finger by trying to imitate that. I can do it now tho.

    • @nosami5268

      Indeed, Karolina Styczińska is Polish and she's an absolute unique person.
      This video is just a show to promote Shogi (this man will never win against a real Shogi professional 😊).
      The world of Shogi is difficult to enter and even harder to stay in. All professional Shogi players are employees of the Japanese Shogi Association. There are certain age barriers and the selection is brutal, players must leave if they don't make the expected progress. Women are professionals in the sense that they are employees and paid for their playing, but they have their own league system.
      Apart from that, there is an open league system (for men AND women) with 9 master classes, and in Japan only the players of the highest 5 classes are considered as the "real professionals".
      As far as I know, there was never a female player such highly ranked, and as far as I know Karolina is the only non Japanese person that became a woman's professional. 😮
      This game is still too Japanese. I live in the second largest city in Germany and even here there is no Shogi club (I learned Chess in 1964 and prefer to play against "real" people. 🧙‍♂️)
      👍🙋🏻‍♂️

      This is exactly how my first chess match against a friend who knew way more about chess than me (they knew strategies and traps, I was still learning how the pieces moved). Basically since I had no clue what traps were, I was inadvertently avoiding every trap she put down without thinking (I think it was just luck). I was also an asshole and I would move my pieces back and forth from one position back to the previous if I didn’t know what to do. She basically was so flabbergasted by my shit techniques that ended up working.
