My only problem with this stuff is the price. They are literally just large, single page pop-up books. They need to cost aa LOT less than they do for me. $100 for a set is just ludicrous.
If space is an issue, or you cant find time to paint/make your own terrain, i can see why you'd want these.. but it isn't, then I cant say these would appeal. I'm not convinced they'd hold up long term or with heave older models.
This is such a great idea!! If they had just figured out the folding part it would have been well worth it but these look fantastic! Great for backdrop in photos too
guerrilla miniature games has used a black sharpy on some of the premade terrain he's looked at in the past to get rid of the white bits where its not got printing on. Would probably help to make these look better for no effort.
I backed the Kickstarter for this and can't wait for it to be delivered 😎 having a bunch of quick easy to assemble boards and terrain which folds up is exactly what I need because I have very little space so this was a no brainier for me.
@@brandonb7120 don’t forget what is seen in the video is as stated beta designs. Overall for a beta product it looks amazing and is mostly functional for a closed test standpoint. If the material was slightly stronger such as a more rigid card than it would last longer. There is also no reason the material has to be card, it could be flexible plastic, or thin sheet metal (highly unlikely but you get the idea)
Always great to have more options for terrain. I'm a huge fan of mdf terrain(with a collection to match), so this product isn't necessarily aimed at me, but I can see the appeal for gamers who have less storage space. Add in some scatter terrain in the form of barricades and such from various other companies and you're all set.
It's a great idea and would work really well for dnd players or those with limited space. Only thing that stopped me was price was a tad high (AUD), as I already have X amount. But starting out, its great value and seems to be good quality prints and an alternative for those who travel/limited space.
A nice variant would be to not have the giant boards for each one. Sure the buildings would poke out a bit when folded, but just keep them all in a box when not in use to prevent edge damage. That way you can then have more than 1 building per 3 square feet of table space!
You know, given how foldable 3D books are a thing, it's rather surprising foldable campaign maps aren't already a thing. Surely it's easy money and makes the hobby more accessible than needing to make your own campaign terrains.
There's a market here for people that want a fully complete set of terrain with no painting. Unless I'm wrong there's not a fully painted set of MDF terrain for below that mark. I like the idea, and think if their full iteration of the products have some durability increase it could do well.
I like the concept but the final product feels underdeveloped... I really dont think that (somewhat flimsy looking) cardstock is the correct material for something that is designed to be put up and down every time you use it (also general wear and tear that terrain takes when in use!), I cant help but feel that this is going to be covered in tatty repairs in no time! I feel like free standing buildings from a stronger material may have been the route to go?
I had no idea you had a second channel. Subscribed. Great video and work as per normal. Thanks for sharing your review and good luck with this new channel.
For just a few 10s of dollars more you get a prepainted resin set of terrain. I think that's where these guys went wrong. They marketed themselves as the quick and affordable alternative to existing terrain and ended up being more complicated and just as expensive.
Cool but the boards are too big around the terrain. I feel if you lined up their boards side by side the terrain would be a bit sparse, at least for games of 9th and AoS.
Nice vid. I'd never actually heard of this stuff before. Watching this before my son wakes up, and every time I hear your kid in the background I turn it down thinking it's my own kid waking up in the other room lol Cheers from Canada!
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like $90 for a full 6x4 of this stuff is worth it. You're going to have a hard time making your own board AND terrain to fill it for that price.
It's a neat idea, but doesn't look very modular or great use for 40k, would be nice to see the result of people trying to make larger boards out of them. I've recently spent about $140 on terrain models, $30 on paints and $5 on a box only slightly bigger than that for storage with great results, It did however take some time investment for assembly and painting so if your pressed for time I can see the convenience of these sets.
Buying one 'zone' gives you a few layout options, but there is an "add-on" of boards for I think $30 that gives you a lot more flexibility in total board size and shape. So it is certainly modular in that sense. The themes of the different zones would give you a weird aesthetic if you mixed and matched between them though. As far as use in 40k... grey ruins surround by craters? The blasted out shell of a cathedral? All seems pretty on brand to me. Plus the "obsidian zone" (which you didn't see here) has a definite necron vibe.
May just be conversions but here in UK I hear $100, think £80 give or take and immediately compare this scale of terrain to 2 sets of the new plastic Kill Team terrain sets. You'd get more buildings that way, so more boards/more interactivity. You'd get to change the board between games by moving/rotating the buildings, something not possible with these. You'd get longevity out of the plastic kits, something that's uncertain with these. As you say, wear and tear of test strain lead to these kits demise, what's to say 6-12 months down the line of generic games on these won't do the same? I definitely consider these kits a hard pass. There's a few other companies of cardboard popup terrain that far more interest me as they were stronger connections, closer to sci-fi shipping container -esque buildings that had strong foundations, ability to be moved around the table to stop tables feeling too static and all for the same price point. If portability was a focus then these would have to hold equal quality/durability to plastic for me to want to pay same price as GW kits. Still hoping someone designs a smart flatpack ready chipboard terrain that can be slotted together, painted, and then re-flatpacked for transit. When we're lugging around an army flatpackable buildings would barely be noticable. I just doubt cardboard is the solution when 1 drunk slip leads to the death of a board.
Honestly, plastic kits is a different product. Of course if you have space and time to build/paint and have space to store it thats the way to go. This if for those who don't :)
Your comments throughout the vid highlight my biggest worry with this: how long it’ll last and the overall quality. I was interested but the fact many of yours were broken or showing wear after being used say to me they’re not worth it.
@@squidlybits1985 yeah they did well, might even be able to get it now 🤔 I’ll have to have a look when I have some spare money again , but I thought it was a great idea, looks like it’ll be great quality too, hopefully they do them again with some texture like the malifaux buildings plasticard style textures, I think that would be awesome 😁 great lil squidley bit! Thanks sir squidley 😉😁
Not sold. Considering the price and the fact that you showed us how worn some of the bits are, it's not a product I could see myself buying. It is clearly not robust enough for any prolonged usage and you still need other pieces of terrain otherwise it is looks extremely bare. If it was a third of the price stated I could see people using them as a secondary board, maybe if you're going away for the weekend, you could throw it in the car, takes up little space BUT if I'm spending $100 it's going towards something a lot more substantial that I can use week in week out without worrying about wear
My word its been so long since ive seen that yellow space marine I sent you! Glad to see he got deployed for a photoshoot! Been waiting for info on this to be released. So thank you for making this, I do have a few boards of my own stuff but for narrative or a scenery change up one of these would be excellent.
It's way too expensive. Ridiculous price for paper terrain. If people have limited space then that means they have limited money so you need to price it correctly for those people and the more casual gamers. Somebody like Micro Art Studios or Frontline Gaming will end up jumping on this and make it for faaar cheaper. They've priced themselves out of their own market, and that's why they won't be around for much longer as a business. This should've been half the price of what it is.
90 bucks is too much for what this is, that's like a "fad price" IMO. I think it is a great idea, and I would love to get a fantasy version of this, but not at that price. For that price I can make a table worth of actual terrain.
Wow, I‘m supper happy I didn‘t back this. It looks like terrible quality. Thanks but I‘d rather use good quality mdf terrain that is more sturdy, looks better, can be customized, painted as desired and only costs a fraction.
It's the same price as buying 1 piece of terrain from tabletop world :) just saying, its not as good. but for 100 bucks i'd buy one if i was lacking space.
My only problem with this stuff is the price. They are literally just large, single page pop-up books. They need to cost aa LOT less than they do for me. $100 for a set is just ludicrous.
But TaBlEtOp GaMiNg!~~
Same. If they cut the price in half, I'd be totally on board and likely buy a couple sets, but at the current price, I'm taking a pass.
matchbox pop up toys, get a second hand castle.....paint it n its awesome
Almost 200$ in canada
For stuff that's that easy to fold away this stuff is incredible!
Totally agree, and for that price its quite killer!
If space is an issue, or you cant find time to paint/make your own terrain, i can see why you'd want these.. but it isn't, then I cant say these would appeal. I'm not convinced they'd hold up long term or with heave older models.

Love the idea, and it fits my current storage conditions (namely, no space), but it's WAY too pricy for me at this point
Where did you get your profile picture from? It moves!

They do seem like a great idea, will be interesting to see how they hold up after a few months of gaming.
Given half of them didn't hold up to the original open and setup it would likely get worse over time as those connections became more loose

Based on the price for 8 boards ($100?) I would love to see them sell Skirmish boards (22x30) for $25 or so.
Awesome stuff! Thanks Squidmar.
This is awesome. Nice for traveling.
I like the idea of a non scripted channel as we will get to see more of your personality amongst more awesome content!
I can’t wait to get my kickstart support in
This seems like a fantastic idea. Space is one of the reasons that I don't have more terrain, so this would be amazing to have!

IIRC the Kickstarter also included quite a bit of scatter terrain, which you'd flesh that empty space out with.
Saves time and space, all in its an excellent idea
Looks really cool!
I know there's a lot of kids books with popups that last for years. Hopefully these do as well!
Jan Piekownsky level stuff... I doubt it, looking at this test pieces, but I do like the concept, although seems overpriced.
