    You’re spot on removing the bearing seals. One thing I would have done differently.. I would have hand packed the spindles and bearings while I had it apart.

  • @theamaturepro
    @theamaturepro 7 дней назад

    I used to take the seals off for the same reason, but recently came across an engineer who designs bearings, and he convinced me to stop doing it. First, how will grease get to the top bearing regardless of the seal? The grease fitting is just to help protect the inner surfaces from moisture. If anyone packs that whole cavity with grease (and can afford to), it'll expand with heat and put lateral pressure on the bearings and cause unnecessary wear. The seals are what keep the grease in once the bearings heat up and it thins out, so its likely your upper bearings are pretty dry unless you have grease bursting out all the time. Lastly, what I found most important to know, those bearings should only be packed about 40% with grease. When they have the spacers between each ball, grease actually hinders it and causes it to overheat. You want just enough grease to keep it lubricated and seals to retain it. Hopefully this helps someone. If not, it's been a hoot rambling on into cyber space!

    I recently put ATV tires on my IKON 52. I love them. They don't tear up grass as much as I thought they would. I found that a spinning turf tire does more damage than a gripping ATV tire.
    I like the zip tie solution on the safety switch.

    It's good to see that you used black zip ties on that switch. They are UV protected. Where we work we use metal detectable zip ties, and we use them for hanging plastic for power washing, so we do cut them on an angle to push through the plastic, but we cut the ends off after we use them on the plastic so that when someone is power washing, they don't get hurt.

    Even a lot of the commercial ZTRs mowers use sealed bearings. The grease into the spindle is just to help keep water out, that's about it. If you were going through all that to remove the inner seals, I would have packed the bearing when it was apart, that way you get get it fully into there. If you load enough grease to have it come out you would blow the outer seal which would let dirt, water into the bearing. Keep up the good work!

    • @funkeworks2947
      @funkeworks2947  2 года назад +3

      If you have a Husqvarna Z-54 I don't think spacers are necessary. I have 20x11x8 and I measured my setup. The closest the tire is to the frame is at the top and it is 3/4 of an inch. I adjusted the deck to compensate for the additional height in the rear. This mower originally came with 18 inch tires. I gained approximately 2 mph ground speed due to the additional height. You can measure from the back edge of your rim to the closest interference with your frame. A 20x11x8 tire mounted on the 8" rim protrudes 1 1/2 inches from the lip of the rim. Example would be if you have 2 inches from the edge of your rim to your closest interference with this tire you would have 1/2 inch of clearance with this tire.

  • @staylofordo7111
    @staylofordo7111 Год назад +1

    The bearing covers are NOT seals. They protect the bearings from bigger pieces of grit. If you use EP grease, when the spindle warms up, it will flow DOWN into the lower bearing, but the upper bearing will not get greased , just because you pumped grease through the fitting. You should have hand packed those. Also, the larger tires, had to affect the cutting angle of the deck, which is adjustable. Now, it leaves streaks in the the fresh cut grass, if you didn’t pitch the deck straight. Good video though. Nice mower, I have the MZ54. Heavier frame, a bit more Kohler, closer to the industrial series.
