    Forty kilos! That's 88lbs! That's heavier than most full plate _steel_ armors in medieval times! That's insanely heavy, no wonder clones didn't have a chance against anyone capable of using the force unless in absolute mass.

    One of the weirdest things to me, is that so few people use handheld energy shields (Like the Gungan one) They have lightsabers... make the same thing, but shield mode.

      @That pilot is a spy he's not talking about making lightsabers he's talking about making shields to help with close quarters combat and they could even make them able to deflect lightsabers by using kyber crystals in them just like they did with powering the death star with kyber crystals

      @@scouthedog Yeah...no, they're actually not that hard to build. The bulk of the components in a Lightsaber are things you can probably pick up from scrappers and traders, since they're not all that exotic. The only part of a Lightsaber that's hard to get is the crystal to focus the energy, and even then, it's only because the Jedi held an uncontested monopoly over all sources of Kyber and all of the alternatives are difficult to even find, let alone acquire.
      The only reason you don't see average people running around with Ligthsabers is because of said monopoly, and also probably because the Republic had laws against it. Even if they didn't the Jedi sure as shite are going to pay a visit to any random civvy they hear about who's waving around a Lightsaber. And that's disregarding how dangerous the blades are to anyone not properly trained.

    I feel like alot of the limitations in the b1 battle droids was specifically engineered that way by dooku so that they wouldn't just stomp the republic into the ground, because we already know that dooku and palpatine were hindering general grievous throughout the war

      The b1s had no real design flaws the legs and arms are not as flimsy as he makes them out to be their thin but they're also made of metal also legs and arms are notoriously hard to shoot even on human bodies ask any law enforcement or military person they will tell you that that is why the military usually only provides chess pieces even though there are major arteries in the legs and arms be ones have also been shown to be capable of dragging off prisoners even with prisoners struggling against it they're not as physically strong as a B2 but they're definitely not weak they don't seem to have any balancing issues either headshots are also notoriously hard same with a neck it's super thin but that doesn't really matter because it's unlikely that it will be hit and it's just one unit even if it does there was no value in beefing them up as doing that would only make them heavier and more likely to be hit and more costly also even the clone trooper armor wasn't even blast or resistant attempting to make them blast or proof wouldn't work or would make them too expensive

      Actually one of the main reasons was because the Trade Federation were worried about a robot uprising. Was one of the main reasons of them needing a control ship in Episode one. When they decided they needed a more individual soldier they limited them in many ways to ensure a revolt wouldn't happen. One prime example was the reason they didn't make them all commander driods.

      @@admiralkaede What do you mean, clone trooper armor wasn't blaster resistant?
      Even the lower quality and cheaper made stormtrooper armor was capable of redirecting a blaster bolt to simply incapacitate the wearer, and phase one CT armor was considered completely superior in protection.
      Both phase one and two CT armor kept their wearers alive when shot once, more often than not. With the way blasters work, they have to take into account both impact and heat, so the armor did pretty well for the clones.

    I love the b1-series battle droids, their versatility and simple design makes them easy to modify and adapt, however it seems that the separatist didn't always use that versatility to its full potential.

      Also iirc narratively the reason they had the blaster carbines was overstock. They were made and equipped with stuff the CIS had laying in warehouses that they repurposed at first. But then again they were cheap and disposable. Think grenade that walks and shoots.

    Personally, in regards to the X-Wing split S-Foils, I've always felt it was more about thrust vectoring. With "two" engines turned in four when the wings separate, the craft becomes more manueverable. Like pulling back and yanking left would cause the bottom right engine to increase thrust while the top left one reduces thrust. This along with the smaller directional thrusters near the nose is why alliance pilots can yank and bank so quickly to keep up with the more nimble tie fighters. And having the right astromech helping to perform the computations would make some pilot's even better at crazy maneuvers.
    In a more broad scope though, and purely theorycrafting, lots of things in this galaxy far, far away don't make much sense compared to the rules of physics as we know them. So what if the make-up of their galaxy is slightly different? What if when their galaxy formed it retained a very, very thin layer of atmosphere in space? This would explain why sound appears to travel in space there as well as why things like seismic charges create coronas when they explode in 'nothingness'.

      Not that they move all that much in either position, being so close to the fulcrum point of the wings. But sure, they would provide a bit more power to turns if Star Wars bothered to model physics in space. Reality: They wanted X-Wings and Y-Wings... so they made each with that in mind.

      I seem to recall that in Legends, the fluff about the E-Wing made a big deal about how the Freitek designers were able to make a heavy long-range fighter that retains the X-Wing's maneuverability despite using fixed wings. Which would strongly imply that maneuverability is the main point of the S-foils.
      And as for why they want to put the laser cannons on the very tips of the wings? My theory is that when they say "increasing the spread" of the lasers, they mean that when the four lasers reach their convergence point, they do so from wider angles, and why you'd want to do that is for shooting targets that have shields. Shooting the same point from multiple angles probably increases the stress on the shields.

    I think people forget that Sidious wasn't trying to win a war: he thought he already won it.
    His forces were specifically designed in a way to nerf everyone in the galaxy, including especially his own troops.
    His only goal with his army was to make them look and act as opposing yet glorious as possible: an incentive to every downtrodden soul in existence (mostly humans) who wanted power as a result of trauma.
    He had no plans for fighting the Rebels and his arrogance had him acting like he'd stomp them out in a matter of hours just by turning one Jedi.
    As far as Sidious saw it, the Rebels were never even a threat, just a game to test out his new toys on.

    I always loved the Astromech design. Not only was it mobile and packed a lot of versitility, but there was a specialized socket by which they could increase the bandwidth of their interface. A spike might be like a serial port, but an Astromech Socket is like a PCIe slot by comparison.
    IMO, Bipedal droids make sense for protocol droids, translators, and servants, but nonsense for security, or military units.

      I disagree. A droid that rolls around on an infantry scale would struggle far more with just movement on a battlefield. A bipedal droid has more maneuverability and realistically more speed, as a rolling droid could go fast but couldn't change directions fast. I understand where you're coming from, but the B1 is actually an effective combat droid. It can fill any role a human operator could and can effectively do so. The reason they suck is because they were designed to suck, but if you placed them against the rebel army without their being prepared the droids would destroy them. Even the stormtroopers to a degree, the only reason we see them as so weak is because of the Jedi and the ridiculously well trained and armed clowns who had weapons designed to kill droids with EMP blaster bolts

      @@Jiub_SN We're imagining different roles for "military droids." I wasn't thinking of soldiers at all but the literal uses to which an Astromech was put, which is mostly naval and command support. Planetside combat absolutely favours legs, hence the ATAT/ATST designs. On the deck or hull of a ship, the rolling Astromech can use magnetic force to maintain contact in cases of sudden movement or loss of gravity, also situations one doesn't have planetside.

    For all the listed problems with CIS battle droid design, they are easily handwaved with one argument: the CIS was *supposed* to lose.
    The entire affair was orchestrated by Palpatine and the Trade Federation was manipulated to create a terrifying paper tiger to scare the Republic into eventually accepting the Clone army and loving Palpatine as their savior when he beats the Droid army.

      Don't forget at least according to old lore the likes of the Trade Federation were actually concerned about Droid revolts. So they purposefully installed weaknesses

      But you'd want that loss to be controlled... to happen according to your own schedule and actions.
      If he'd made the fighting forces too imbalanced, things might keep moving farther in the Republic's favor then he could find a way to counter. A victory that came too early would throw his plan out of whack in at least two or three ways.

      I'd also add that they're intended for sale - so by making the basic models and some vehicles able to interact with off-the-shelf equipment or existing personnel, you might sell more? After all, a customer might only want the droids for the infanty to train against, so give them stunners, but also want some of the tanks for their own infantry to use. If they could all only use the hidden comms and direct interfaces, that would make them unattractive. Changing weeapons to live-fire would also be aimple casae of issuing them with new weapons making them much more flexible and requiring far less technical support.

    So I wanted to actually raise a point about the stormtrooper armor, at least... before Disney... the armor itself is designed to dissipate the energy of a heavy bolt, but often would result in an unconscious soldier in the process, with the impression of 'being killed' when knocked down. Short of headshots, or repeated follow up shots

      I love the implied lore that since it focuses so heavily on stopping energy weapons, the armor material is brittle against crude but easily encountered stuff like powerful impacts. In at least one live-action series, a stormtrooper helmet shattered when bludgeoned. And the idea's not just a post-Disney thing: Katarn-pattern clone armor was shown or said to be vulnerable to hard rounds before the franchise changed hands.

    The ARC-170 was actually based on the WWII P-61 Black Widow, the largest, most successful night fighter in the USAAF inventory.

      And let's see. 12.71m long, compared to the P-61 at 15.11m, wingspan of 19.85m vs. the P-61 at 20.12m, height of 3.81. vs. the P-61 at 4.41m, it looks to be a pretty even size comparison.

      For the Star Wars RPG, I was tweaking an upgraded ARC-170. I replaced the rear gun with a more modern, more powerful model, and added a second (below). I then added X-Wing lasers to the tips of the S-foils, and replaced the clunky old laser cannons with 2 of the heavy laser cannons found on the B-Wing's gun pod, on EACH wing tip (4 cannons total). It gets an upgraded powerplant, modern proton torpedo launchers, 4 upgraded X-Wing engines, and modernized electronics. With the space & weight savings, it can carry more life support & provisions for the crew, plus a wired-in navicomputer from a Longprobe Y-Wing.
      Another version had only 1 X-Wing laser on each wingtip (plus 1 on each S-foil) and no torpedo launchers, but it mounted a light turbolaser for killing capital ships.

    Okay, a point for the fear being programmed into the B-1. I believe this is actually quite necessary as the weaker droids would rout in the face of an unwinnable situation, thereby reducing losses at least a little bit. This likely explains why more powerful droids like the B-2, Droideka, and just about anything else don't have similar personalities.

      the problem is that implies a higher degree of disposability for the more expensive specialised droids, and retreating to mitigate losses undermines the biggest advantages a droid army can offer over an organic army (being that droid grunts can be more easily sacrificed)....i daresay this was deliberate tho seeing as the whole point of the Separatist Army was to be big and scary but easily defeated lol

    the arc-170 would actually make a good fighter/bomber if it could carry more weapons. In this case, it could fill a role similar to the f-15 strike eagle. Being capable of longer range interdicter and attack missions, while retaining a reasonable amount of maneuverability to defend itself and potentially assist it's escorting fighters in dogfights

    I think many of the flaws in the battle droids are a result of planning that didn't fully pan out. I don't think the separatists expected their army to remain almost entirely droid. Many of the things that make them weak against organics would be beneficial for working WITH them. They can be easily transported on the same vehicles. Weapon compatibility, audio communication and basic personalities would be huge benefits in that scenario, so being intended to supplement organic forces makes sense

      Also their background in being security droids might be another reason for their "organic like" design.
      B2 super droids don't have many of the B1 flaws... And look kinda scary

      There could be economic factors too. The trade federation likely already had a lot of infrastructure to manufacture humanoid equipment. Overhauling their entire logistics might've been thought to be detrimental.

      @@CandleWispthis. The B1s were a result of the equipment they already produced being for organics. Why refit thousands of tanks and ships with droid brains when you already have B1s? Same goes for most equipment. The B1 was basically an organic that could use those tools, and the TF a already produced tons of those tools, so whg not just use both instead of modifying both?

    In regards to the bridge of spacefaring vessels being in the middle of a ship, where it is most shielded, that actually was something that was used in the HALO universe, where the Covenant cruisers and other ships had their bridge dead in the middle, using sensors to move and see.

    Fun fact: AT-AT armor technically isn't immune to blaster fire. The problem is that it's so heavily resistant to blaster fire that it would kill you AGES before you destroyed it by that means.

      I mean… you could probably say that about any armor in any fictional universe. It’s *functionally* immune because nobodys ever gonna get through the armor, shooting it in the same spot over and over again, in proper combat

    27:00 standard combat load ( with ruck ) depends on the climate, the colder the heavier it gets. Cold climate is about 120-160lbs including ammo ( from rifleman to gunner ). AT Joes carry extra weight due to extra equipment and gunners due to ammo distributed. It gets technical but it gets heavy to carry it all, trust me

    The Death Star makes a lot more sense if its primary role is as a mobile fleet base, with the threat of "Obey Or Else" as its last resort of enforcement, rather than its primary mission.

      I think the death Star would have been a much cooler idea if it was like a massive hub station with thousands of hangers and shipyards rather than being a planet destroyer imagine a station that can carry enough forces to conquer several star systems now that would be terrifying

      The Death Star could probably do with being a quarter of the size, if that was irs role. What system needs hundreds of ISDs to conquer?
      If anything, I think the empire would be better served by making the fleet equivalent of an aircraft carrier.
      The Fleet Carrier which then unleashes a battleship, starfighter carrier, ground attack ship, and communication ship.
      Basically a mini battlegroup

Something that could be deployed to be a central coordination and fleet ops point for operations across hundreds of systems, with the backup option of being able to jump directly into a system and hit the "we're done with this shit" button.

      Not really. You have to think about those tanks and droids as their original function is important. Those tanks have been manufactured to sell to organics, and those droids were designed to serve as security droids during a time when integrated weapons in droids was illegal. So they already have the infrastructure for tanks and pilots, why change it? This always help understand when they eventually do switch from droid driven to droid integrated tanks later in the war with things like the spider droid or those dolly droids from kashyyk

      The Tanks could simply be older designs that predate the mass deployment of Battle Droids, and slightly modifying them to fit android crew was more cost effective than an integrated droid brain or an entirely new design.

    Then B1's number would have drastically reduced since they'd be much more expensive. Sure they could use better field feedback tools like recon drones, surveillance drones for coordination and air strikes etc. and they already have tactical and super tactical droids which can outsmart and outmaneuver majority of GAR command without them.

    Just a small trivia - Most modern army armor are not made to protect from bullets but from shrapnel and debris. WW 1 has show that an unprotected soldier doesn't need to be struck directly by the artillery shell because shrapnel and even falling debris such as brick or wood chips are enough to kill or at least seriously injure a soldier even if the shell exploded 10, 20 meters away (depends on a variety of factors)

      Yep. MBTs today are relatively thin in raw steel, but tanks like the M1 Abrams have composite armor inside which can absorb a few shots. Russia, formerly the USSR, was a big fan of ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) and this can be seen on T-72 and T-80 tanks.

MBTs are different story but when talking about them we can see in Ukraine that ERA armor does nothing against Javelin, Stugna, Maljutka or other ATGM designed to strike the MBT from above.

The poster-child for the "you can't put enough armor on the tank to stop the shell, so keep the armor light for better mobility" school of tank design was the Leopard I, with only 10-70mm of rolled homogeneous armor, while contemporary tank shells could penetrate up to 250mm of armor. As armor technology advanced, it became possible to equip tanks with significantly better protection without incurring the severe weight penalty that the equivalent protection of RHA would require.

    You gotta figure that the reason for the apparent flaws may be due in part to do with the Sith. The Sith created the Clone War and created both the droids and the clone troopers.
    The design, flaws included, had an ultimate purpose, which the eventually be defeated by the human-cloned GAR in which those in the Galactic Core think highly of and that carried over into natural human recruited Stormtroopers of the Empire.

    Regarding s foils being poor radiators of heat in atmosphere, I think all Star Wars ships have some means of actively dispensing heat via radiators in panel that seem to work best with space around them, the tie fighter wings serve the same function

      Ironically radiators work better in atmosphere due to, well, air. The international space station doesn't have giant solar panels... they're literally radiators. Getting rid of heat without an atmosphere is very hard.

    S foils work in space just fine. They open up the heat areas to be cooled. It doesnt need airflow, just a place for the heat to dissipate into

      Nope. The surface area of the S boils are not large enough to dissipate heat fast enough. Being that small in size would literally take about 4 years to cool down anything.

      ​@@Alloy682 Heat dissipates by transferring heat to other molecules if i remember correctly, when there is air there are molecules everywhere around for the heat to dissipate into them but in space there is literally nothing. The only way for heat to dissipate in space is by going away as radiation which is slower (thats why you actually dont freeze instantly in reality when youre in space). Just saying in case you didnt already search or forgot about it

    Nice to see I'm not the only one who gets hung up on some of these issues. Even from when I saw the first movie back in 1977 I questioned why they put the lasers so far outboard on the X Wing. I'd studied military weapons and vehicles throughout history and even then knew that the best place for a gun was on the centerline of the aircraft. Also the whole SF-17 bombing scene really turned me off. There are so many things wrong with that and I believe you hit on all of them. Great work!

    I imagine the ARC fighters didn't have better hyperdrives than their larger enemy's crafts despite being recon fighters due to it not being possible at the time to track hyper-jumping, no point being faster than your enemy if you don't know where they're going when it comes to warping

      Well who made the statement, and how much advantage could you get by exploiting each one? A literal-minded engineering or analysis droid might count every conceivable flaw there was no matter how much effect exploiting it was likely to have. They might not be swayed by the fact a competent crew could negate the flaw's effect, and even count something like a flaw in blast doors separately for each door.

    I think having a bipedal Droid army makes sense when you're making them quick since most battle doctrine that exists would be for bipedal species, so unless you want to design and test a brand new doctrine for a non-bipedal Droid, just going bipedal makes sense.

      In the case of B1s and B2s, there's another reason. They constantly had to operate in places and use equipment meant for beings with rather humanoid anatomy. AATs and the like were almost always crewed by droids during the Clone Wars... but they were _commercial products_ designed long before, when organic crews were more common and the builders planned to sell them on the market.

It's why I don't like TCW, a lot of the droids don't fit lore like the tactical droid. The command personnel were non droid or upgraded b1 (still a not very effective b1, but mostly used to relay commands), there was never some special unit tactical droid, as they were afraid of giving droids too much individual brain power and control of their army

      Ironically, Disney had the Empire address a few of the flaws he mentioned in the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. ISDs now feel more like heavyweights called in for important work, for where the omnipresent Arquitenses and fighter-toting Gozantis can't handle a job alone, or for 'showing the flag'. And its far more common to see the higher-capacity Sentinel shuttle around than its little brother the Lambda.
      This isn't to say the ships don't still have a lot of flaws, or that Disney has nothing to answer for. Heck, they may not even have deliberately helped things make sense. But it's worth noting.

    Great points so far about the B1 Battle Droid, but regarding the AAT, I would also add that it would make more sense to simply have it controlled by a dedicated droid brain. It would likely be more effective and efficient that way, plus with the space they save by not needing an interior space, they could add things such as more armor, and potentially even shielding. Personally, I would recommend that they increase the armor towards the back and also move the reactor more towards the center of the tank along with the droid brain.

    Also, i feel like the doctrine for carrier operations in space should be equipping your starfighters with a jumpdrive so you could in theory engage the enemy from a system away. This would allow you to do surprise attacks, as a group of starfighters is harder to detect than your main ships and the enemy will not be able to engage the carrier imeadietly. Hell, to prevent the enemy force from jumping to your carrier, you could have battleships jump in after the fighters make their strikes, forcing them to respond to the ships right after the surprise attack.

      It is more a numbers versus cost (something like 10 TIEs for a X-wing, more if you include the astromechs ), plus a really logical reason: You want your starfighters close as to protect your ships, not far away. As for enemies attacking your carrier, it's why they ISDs are not pure carriers but battleships with some fighter cover. Of course, any naval doctrine would require escort ships, but those escorts never show up when the pesky heroes attack.

      @@andrew3203 Carrier doctrine dictates that you should detect your enemy and strike him from as far away as possible, preferably before he ever detects your battlegroup, but at least before he can get in range and hit you. Launching an Alpha strike with a complement of bombers/strike aircraft, a complement of support craft for jamming and extended detection range as well as fighter direction, and a detachment of fighters from a system away is actually solid doctrine. Backing that up with a few Battleships or Cruisers and a solid escort (if you have such a strike force that you can spare) to take advantage of the distraction and chaos caused by the fighters is also good doctrine. However, the key thing you neglected to consider is that a carrier battlegroup almost never deploys it's entire fleet of fighters and strike craft in one go. At a minimum you would keep a significant force of fighters back, some deployed as an active CAP to patrol around the carrier and provide immediate interception capabilities in the event an enemy force enters the system, the others on standby/alert and ready to deploy at a moments notice if something comes after your battlegroup.

      @@JM-nm2ir This is of course provided you have solid intelligence on where the enemy is, you of course don't want to get surprised, but you still often will have the option of retreating and telling your fighters to rendevous in a different location unless you run into an interdictor. Ideally what you'd want to do is stay in relatively safe parts of space, where you know the likelihood of encountering an enemy is unlikely, but still close enough to their side of space, for lack of a better term, to be able to hit them in a meaningful way.

      I think it was more that they wanted 1 cheap droid that could do everything. It can be a soldier, police, firefighters, factory workers, pilots, engineers, security, laborers etc. Think of every role in the 4 branches of the military, other than high ranking positions these droids had to fill in every gap across the galaxy in every scenario. Heat, cold, dry, wet, urban, wild, populated, deserted etc. The CIS had 2 options in this position:
      1. Develop a unique droid for every role and scenario, massively complicating logistics depending on the when, where and who of the ever changing front lines of a galaxy-wide war.
      OR
      2. Make a jack of all trades, super cheap, average performing droid that is just ok enough to perform in every role. It can go from patrolling a city to performing repairs in space within 5 minutes. Just pump out this cheap droid in the billions and even if you lose a million a day you can fill those ranks right back up.

      The T-65B model used during the Rebellion could carry 6 proton torpedoes. Later models improved on this. But yes, only 2 were carried by each X-wing at Yavin because torpedoes are hard to come by.

    The thing about radiators in space, the international space station uses them. They are needed to let heat dissipate through radiation. Convection and conduction don’t have anything to transfer heat into like air or water. If you used convertion, the heat is still trapped in you liquid or gas on the ship and will continue to heat up the ship unless it is radiated out of the vessel. Thats why radiators make sense.

    On the topic of stormtroopers not helping the wounded in combat: it works the same irl and soldiers many countries are trained to act the way stormtroopers are because it works. Heroic charge across the battlefield is to be left in action or war movies. The last thing you need is a dead or wounded medic and him doing something like this is a surefire way to get killed or otherwise incapacitated. As a soldier the best thing you can do to help your wounded squadmate is to fend off the attack so you can evacuate him safely.

    1:16:07 There were some big misconceptions that you had about the methods of heat management in space in regards to the X-wing that I thought I'd clear up, putting at least some of my education as an aerospace engineering undergraduate to use.
    In space, high surface area for radiators is CRITICAL, as they are unable to use conduction or convection with an atmosphere to get rid of heat, thus leaving the last - and most inefficient - form of heat transfer: radiation. If you look at pictures of the space shuttle, whenever it was in orbit, it would have its cargo bay doors open; the inside of the doors were lined with enormous radiators, that would also extend out from the doors a bit in order to radiate on both sides. Your suggestion of liquid cooling would only work to move heat around inside the craft; not get rid of it. If you have an internal fan in a pressurized bay or something... well all that you are doing is dumping heat into that bay, and eventually that heat sink will become saturated. For a starfighter, you'd want to use liquid cooling loops to carry heat from the systems to the radiator panels, and by flowing through the channels of the radiators, heat would be emitted as black-body radiation (this is typically infrared, but when the temperature gets hot enough, it creeps into the visual spectrum, first as a dark red, and eventually working its way up to white-hot).
    If you still aren't convinced, just look at a picture of the International Space Station. You will notice that, on the underside of the massive solar panel truss that makes up the backbone of the station, there are four panels that look like solar arrays, but are mounted perpendicular to the sunlight (this is to minimize sun exposure; you want to emit heat, not absorb it); additionally, there are two ENORMOUS sets of three panels mounted to the aft of the truss, closer to the core. Those are the station's thermal management radiator arrays, and they need to be that large in order to get rid of the huge amount of heat both produced by systems on the station and absorbed through sunlight. When it comes to radiators, you want the highest surface area possible, even in space.

    I’m pretty sure a lot of Expanded Universe content covered those points regarding the _Imperial_ Star Destroyers, and used them as justification for how a ragtag group of freedom fighters could destroy huge state of the art warships with nothing but a few handfuls of second hand starfighters. The available material at the time seemed to imply that starfighters being powerful enough to be a major factor in combat doctrine was a recent development that the Empire hadn’t bought into yet. (General Jan Dodonna, just before the Battle of Yavin: “Well the Empire doesn’t consider a small one-man fighter to be any threat, or they’d have a tighter defense.”) The fundamental design principle behind Star Destroyers was terror and dehumanization (for lack of a better word.) The thinking was to convey both the idea that something so big and powerful as a Star Destroyer (and thus the Empire) was impossible to oppose, and the idea that individual lives are worthless. TIE fighters and storm troopers being easy to kill isn’t a flaw, it’s the core feature. Hope is a lie. Justice is a lie. Freedom is a lie. There is only power, and the State has all the power, thus there is only the State. You are a worthless, insignificant bug, a lump of coal to be burned in the furnaces that keep the machine that is the State running. You _will_ die. You will die for the State. And the State will not care or even know you existed, for that is how utterly, completely, totally, wretchedly meaningless you were. All will die for the State. All will be ground to dust beneath the State. Every minute of every day, a thousand worthless lives will march to their deaths because the State demanded it, and the State will not care, because a thousand more worthless lives will have already marched over their corpses. Thus the Empire only builds big ships. Because only big ships matter. Small ships, _individual_ ships, are irrelevant before the biggest, most powerful ships in the galaxy, just as the individual is irrelevant before the State.

    We all know at the end of the day the B1s we’re designed this way to further strengthen why the clone army was needed. Thr clone army just needed a throw away army that they could easily defeat, but seemed like they were somewhat of a threat to the stability of the “Republic “. The emperor could easily say that the clone army was that good if he had to when the time came to take over.

    You left out the most common Faraday cage on the planet - the car. It's safer to be in a car in a thunderstorm than it is to be in a house, as the car's frame will absorb and distribute the charge. This was famously demonstrated by Richard Hammond in Top Gear, when he sat in a car as they shot a million volt bolt into the vehicle with no effect. They were even able to start the car, killing the stupid premise than an EMP would kill all vehicles.

    On the S foil radiator point, they do actually help increase the surface area for radiative cooling (releasing heat as infrared radiation, for example how the sun heats the earth). It's not as effective as convective cooling (e.g. air/liquid carrying it away), but it can still make a big difference in space

    2:31:14 if it's unarmed, it's not a "cruiser". Cruisers are essentially light battleships, with similar weaponry but lighter armor so as to be faster. The idea was to outgun the enemy, but if the enemy had similar or equal firepower, you could run away. They're capital ships of war, like a battleship.

    A good number of the ARC-170 flaws are mostly down to either SW being at times poorly thought out (unmanned recon?) or just the ARC being used in a role its clearly not suited for. Allen points out it was used as a superiority fighter, a role its not suited for and something the V-Wing is far better at. The ARC thrives in situations where its able to bring massive amounts of firepower on target without needing to rely on sub-par maneuverability. Roles like Strike Fighter - attacking say enemy bombers or capital ships would be perfect, it would have not insignificant firepower while being inherently more survivable than Y-Wings. Or it could have been used in a flex role, escorting Y-Wings to target, then in turn attacking said target to add extra punch to the strike package or in an engagement where the V-Wings need extra support the ARCs could join in and perform Boom and Zoom style attacks to disrupt enemy formations and bring more numbers to the table, allow the smaller more nimble craft get into turning fights while the ARC just pick their moments from outside the engagement to cause maximum damage and chaos. Its a good design, some clear faults no doubt but it mostly suffers from being used poorly. What we see in the battle of Coruscant is more akin to asking a bunch of F-4 Phantoms to get into a guns only dogfight with a bunch of MiG-21s or asking something like a Mosquito or Beaufighter to go dogfight German 109s, they can do it, just not very well and will almost certainly come off the worse.

    Speaking of the bridge of the star destroyer. In The Expanse series, the bridge of the Rocinante was penetrated by several projectiles during battle, but the crew was wearing space suits, so they didn't suffocate immediately. BTW the bridge has no windows, beause everything is operated through displays. In starwars, aesthetics appear to be the number one concern. Just look at the stunning cinematography of the sequel trilogy and the disney era series. Everything looks cool, even though the plot is broken, characters are broken, mechanics of the universe are broken etc. As long as everything looks cool, it's all good.

    After watching the beginning, the droid army makes complete sense.
    The Sith orchestrated the war and having cheap and weak enemies with the occasional scarier model fits the plan.
    An intimidating enemy that can definitely be defeated allowed Palapatine to claim power.

      The Clone Wars concluded because Palpatine was ready; he made sure to have the right people in the right places, his pawns groomed, and then released a few info tidbits and insinuations to bring it about. He controlled both forces at the end of the day.
      Evenly matched forces make more sense under those conditions... things progress more as he desires, because events can't move too quickly for him to manipulate. The sheer weight of CIS numbers inflicting attrition was able to counter the better tactics and quality of Republic forces.

    I will have to get back to this after just he first set but I do think the # 6 for the droids was not completely correct. This was about the droids not having better tactics. The droids acted a lot like ants and what if everyone decided what to do based on what it was seeing. That would actually break the strength of the wave attack (if we do not fix everything else) as each droid would be looking for the best way to win while saving its own servos. Now the mass wave would be like a tickle fight. Still, that could have been used more at lower levels possibly. I just think there was a worry that if the droids were to good they would turn on there masters at some point. This might also explain some of the other design decisions. How many droid / AI revolts were there, I have no clue. I would guess there were some back in the day.

    tbh I think bridge design is a constant flaw across most of sci-fi not just star wars, everyone seems to think having an externally placed exposed bridge is required, the bridge should be burried in the center of the ship's citadel with a view screen fed from multiple redundant external sensors.
    It's especially stupid in star trek where they actually ARE using a view screen rather than a window, but still build their bridge in an exposed location anyway...

    The battle Droid segment was funny near the end. When you were talking about the aiming systems in the Droid, you said, "it's like they developed the aiming system in the Droid to assist the clones", then gave a very short look at the camera.
    It's like you, having studied the universe of Star Wars for many years, then reflecting upon the entirety of the Clone War, understood that the whole point was for the Jedi and Clones to work together to defeat the Droid armies. The Droid Army, and each individual type of robotic soldier, were designed to have several flaws and be defeated. Even if this required some rudimentary ingenuity by the clones.
    The more you know about Palpatine, they more you have to admire his genius as it encompasses incredible timing and forethought.

    Hey Allen, love your work. I love ship designs and your reviews are fantastic. So, on the Mandorlorian he is now sporting a Naboo starfighter and as your review of the X-wing the discomfort of just sitting in a cockpit for hours and having a child in your lap well, not fun. So, with your vast knowledge of ships what kind of ship could be modified or used to carry the N-1 starfighter? Just very curious about what the generation tech fan base and crew could and would come up with. Would love to see a contest to see what Generation Tech fan base could draw up and run videos of what people come up with. The winner gets a choice from the merch store.     I have to admit I had to close the video after 9 minutes, when the question was: "Why don't B1 Battledroids hit every time? As robots, they should have incredibly precise targeting systems."
    When the whole thing about Star Wars technology and computers is that targeting systems are shit.
    Luke can beat a targeting computer by believing in the heart of torpedoes. Capital ships use manned gun turrets and all of space combat is fought at visible ranges.

    im pretty sure they chose the b-1 because it was pretty cheap and was initially built when there was no other major standing army at the time. the separatist were basically a corporate alliance of planets so a lot of the decisions make sense from an accountant's point of view. the personalities was just George Lucas's writing so don't know how much i would judge that. plus they could all be turned off when the time came instead of an organic army.

      He has too many wrong flaws on it to be honest I don't really see any flaws on it sure as an individual machine yes but when you compare their price and the amount that their standardly used in those flaws become no longer important but things like thin arms legs and necks or putting the processor in the head instead of the chest are not real flaws because any police officer or military person will tell you how hard it is to shoot arms and legs which is why it's always shoot for the chest not the head the B1 arms take that to the next level it would be extremely hard to shoot the arms and legs and their cheap so even if it does happen it doesn't really matter putting in the head is the same the head's hard to shoot trying to make them bullet resistant is pointless as that would crank up the cost of the metal as I imagine alloys that are capable of resisting high powered lasers would be quite expensive to mass produce while the b1s could be made out of any cheap metals from scrap yards melted down and combined their guns not being built in doesn't really matter either because their computers they can calculate the aim them being bipedal doesn't seem to really affect them it allows them to work with anything that humanoids can but they also don't really seem to have any balancing issues the gun having a major overheating problem doesn't really matter because the Droid will most likely be destroyed before the gun overheats and even if the gun overheats it could probably just pick up another one from a fallen Droid or clone so it's not really a big deal

    Lol, mentioning Croatia was super random. xD completely caught me off guard, had to rewind it to double-check if I heard correctly. I can't recall Croatia having issues with France. They did help Framce during the 30-year war, If anything, they would probably take issue with Italy because Italy occupied part of their coast

    It always bothered me that E11s have a folding shoulder stock that no one uses. It's also too big to be a pistol and almost too small to be a rifle.

    Just look at Battleship New Jersey's channel for how many "point defence" (i.e. anti aircraft) weapons even a WWII battleship has. The number is impressive. Star Destroyers make zero sense if you spend even the smallest amount of logic on the design.

    Death Star didn't lack shields, rebel fighters were just skimming the surface under the shields.

      I suppose it would be absurd to cover the whole thing with both particle and ray shields.
      The thing is literally too big for any sort of hard-object attack available to enemies to make the slightest dent in it, and having them up would hamper the launching and operations of friendly craft nearby.

      @@henrysokol3466 death star 1 had all kinds of shieds, it was scattered with shield generations protecting bigger towers, arrays, sensors and naturally the whole main weapon was extremely well defended. But x-wings were flying low enough to be inside the shields. Which is also useful for DS own tie fighters, to shield them from anti-fighter craft coming from the outside

      @@miqvPL There are different sorts of shields, that usually get used in combination. Classically, _ray_ shields are more useful for blocking energy while _particle_ shields will block dense materials (like starfighters) from passing through. The lore's been rather inconsistent, though.)
      But my actual point didn't disagree with you-- although there were types of shields which still could've prevented the fighters' strategy,. they probably weren't present where they were operating.

      but the super simplified version that is consistent is this- death star 2 and scarif had one with super strong particle shield that basically blocks any matter from getting in.
      While death star 1 and most ships have a shield that ~probably~ stops torpedoes but starfighters can pass through it without harm.

    A thought about Battle Droid. The prototype self service checkout was more advanced than the ones in stores now, because Walmart, Sainsbury's, etc decided to use cheaper components that don't work as well. B1 battledroids defects are the same as the reason you get the checkout saying unknown item in the checking area

    Much simpler way to describe "not inline with the chamber and barrel" is "bore offset". The lower your bore-offset, the better off you'll be. Tis why the stock on an AR is a straight line, as opposed to the AK's downward angle. Puts the recoil impulse directly in line with the bore-axis.

    The only explanation for how bad the B1 Battle Droid turned out is that it was based on a design originally intended for generic humanoid service. e.g. replacing basic manual labor jobs that were typically carried out by humanoids, including interacting with humanoids. They're stupid and have "personality" because that makes them more relatable and less threatening to the workers they're replacing. They're cheaply built because their entire purpose was to be cheap replacements for bio-labor. They lack wireless communication and other advanced features because they were not meant to compete with astromechs, protocol droids, and other high-end droids. Basically, the Trade Federation originally designed them to be barely adequate manual laborers that wouldn't get uppity.

      @@lomiification That's a robot designed to do one, very specific job, similar to a battery droid. The B1 is designed to do *any* basic humanoid job as a drop-in replacement for an actual humanoid. That's how they use an off-the-shelf tank designed for humans and crew it with B1 battle droids, for example. So while the B1 isn't particularly great at being an infantry soldier, I guess "quality has a quantity all its own" and having massive amounts of B1 droids lets you manifest an army with off-the-shelf equipment. The Super Battle Droid and Droidekars are much better battle droids, but neither of them could pilot a tank.

    Has anyone noticed that in the clip where he talks about the A280 Blaster penetrating stormtrooper armour the clip shows a DLT-20A Heavy Blaster being used? No doubt the A280 can penetrate stormtrooper armour that is clear, but I feel like that’s a minor oversight. Still a great video

    well, here's the thing, the reason why the Zero ended up the way it did was not due to economic sanctions, the zero was designed half a decade before those came into effect. It was due to the design specifications wanting an extremely long range carrier fighter, that could do both interception and bomber escort, which are very difficult to combine. While the Zero was very light and quite small, it did not cheap out on structural integrity. By the time it entered service almost no aircraft had self sealing fuel tanks and very few had armor. Howerver the lessons of war lead to both being installed in existing models and new designs in other countries, while japan did not have the resources or manpower to keep up the production and design a new carrier fighter during the war. The lack of design staff was one of the largest factors in that regard. There have been a multitude of improvements to the zero during it's life time and a 1945 model was vastly more capable than a 1941 Zero, including armor for the cockpit, self sealing fuel tanks and even a more powerful engine, which was another shortcoming of the japanese aviation industry, which severely limited the design of the Zero.

    I will say the B-1 has a few instances of "it's not a bug it's a feature". At the point where starships with ion engines and the like exist, their cargo is more limited by space than weight (especially when in atmosphere where weight is irrelevant). So faster to make and cheaper but heavier droids offer two benefits and one detriment that isn't that big of a deal. Also, having the head house the computer is a good idea. Headshots are incredibly difficult and infantry are trained to shoot for center mass. So if the torso can take a few hits before being physically destroyed that's better than one hit that destroys the computer.
    As for being vulnerable to lightsabers, so is everything. The Separatists were smart to use mass cheap droids for clones and occupation but, specialists like the Droideka to interfere with the small amount of Jedi.
    That being said, some of the things you mentioned would cost very little and be game-changing. Networking the droid army and making their similarity more like the B-2 would make it a nightmare for the Republic. Having all droids instantly communicate using a network would allow for insane levels of coordination insanely quickly. They could coordinate and switch tactics in microseconds leaving the Republic un able to keep up. I mean they had the B-2 program and those were pretty badass; why would they not make a similar program for the B-1? Sure they're weaker but if they were very aggressive or at least not cowardly, stupid, and complaining they'd be far more effective.
    I think Palpatine and Dooku knew they had to purposely nerf the Separatists to ensure they lost. After all the Separatists were the patsy to take the fall and justify a new Sith Empire being formed.
