Melee has literally ENDLESS tournament footage of so many epic games, sets and matches of the last 25 years (G2 is my favorite but numerous great ones to count). Videos like these need to be preserved forever. Visual testaments to the depths & rewards this game has to offer. At the very least in the conversation for greatest esport of all time.
Hbox used B-air roughly 286 times on the first match. This routine carried on for 3 more games. 5 years later and I still don't see the difference between the Hbox of now and old Hbox.
Having started watching in 2018, commentary from this era is wild lmao. HMW just being a hater for 30 mins straight, occasionally interrupting to complain about someone messing with the lights. Real basement tournament energy
This was the most annoying commentary. You have one character camping with ranged moves, yet they expect HBox to go face first into bombs and boomerangs? The only embarrassing part of this matchup was the commentary.

Puff can't just up and approach against good players. Puff will lose. HBox has to play the way he plays. You ever stop to think why he's the only Puff player in the top anything anymore? Even if HBox "doesn't belong in the tourney scene", who are you to say that? He's been around for years and the community hasn't died yet. As far as I'm concerned you're just another viewer on the other end of a monitor spouting baseless insults.
He is good for the scene. As is Armada. People need to get off the dumb mindset of hyperaggression being the only good thing for the scene. It's even sillier once you take into account that these same people adore Mango, who at his best vs Armada camps a ton. 2014 Mango was winning because he was more defensive. The real reason Hbox is so disliked is because of the Hbox hate Mango fed+stupid as shit character hate. Mango plays defensively, everyone loves it and calls him a genius. Anyone else does, they are a boring camper.
This might be my favorite set of the tourney. I saw that this was a 37-minute best of 5 set and I got excited. bahahaha. This is a creative masterpiece. This is the hard definition of a counter. Armada went straight for the Jiggs counter, if not the Hbox counter. :P First game was heartbreaking. After that, you could start to see Hbox get impatient and Armada pick up on it and find opportunities to be more aggressive. I loved this so much. Watched every second and would watch again anytime.
After years of watching great combos and fast pace games, I appreciate sets like this once in a while. Don't get me wrong, I love watching people like PP and SS play. But sets likes this remind you how diverse gameplay can be in Melee. And you know what? The best thing about this whole SET was not Armada's good spacing, solid projectile pressure or great approach timing. It was how he prepared a whole set-long strategy to countering HBox's style and the mind games behind it.
First match was super hype though. First hit after a minute of camping: cheers. First stock: cheers. Armada takes HBox's second stock: cheers. Armada respawn-platform camps: cheers. THAT ENDING. CHEERS.

Nah not only on FD he does against more players/stages then that but I see your point. Mango pretty much always switches to counterpick the opponent/best MU for him. He choose Falco against M2k/PP (worse MU for them) and Fox against Me/Hbox (Fox is worse for me and Mango is bad on the Falco vs Puff MU so he choose Fox instead). So he is counterpicking everyone that is really good tbh (and Falcon against ICs at least he used to). MacD 9th at Apex and Vanz 13. Best Puff from would end up at 280th
@MrSoupMonster FYI I don't think Hbox plays "gay". I admire him for being able to use the very basics of Jiggs to the extent where he's the 4th best player in the world. His spacing and decision making are both extremely good. The part of your post that I disagree with is where you say that what Armada did wasn't strategy. After getting 5-0d by Hbox at Apex, he realized his shortcomings and came up with a new counterpick. How is that not strategy? This wasn't even the first time. Pound V was.

But does that mean Mango/M2k is players you have a hard time to respect cause they are the ones that switch chars most of the top level players (cause they wanna have a MU they like better)? I never really liked to change char but Europe have not a single really good Puff and Sweden dosen't even have a Puff main (if you don't count bad players or people that is not serious) so I can NEVER practice the MU =/
@Everyone who calls this boring: You're right, this isn't a lightning fast tech battle, this aint fox dittos, but it is a complicated and skillful competition all the same. You don't see rape combos, those characters don't do those. This matchup must be played very carefully, VERY carefully, by both sides. What you see is a very intricate spacing and zoning war based very specifically around timing, baiting, risk and reward. I think this is very fun to watch. (From a falco/fox main)

I'm referring to all the people complaining about how the players win. There's a reason a time limit is included in the matches; if they don't want people to be able to timeout, they should remove the limit. End of story. People may still play campy, but that's different than playing to timeout. There is no point in bitching about this as much as people do.

No offense but Hbox only tried to learn approach when he realized that I can play timeouts for days even if I hate that. We started with dreamland cause he wanted to time me out too. Our opinions should not be a factor in how they play. We do, however, have opinions. We have our reasons why we enjoy Melee and/or Brawl. To some, or most, people... this is not what Melee means to them. I think they have every right to be upset, but it should not affect the players at all.

Waffles commentary is normally great but it really bothers me here. Hungrybox was constantly trying to approach with nairs and such, Armada is the one who picked YL and tried to camp and time him out. And that's fine, play to win. He recognized Peach wasn't working and adjusted his strategy.

@Artaneius I beg to differ. All it takes is one player to get ballsy and just run in. But who wants to lose? The game has progressed a lot more than it has back in the Ken days. Yeah I like the combos and aggressive style, that's why Mango is my dude. But when it comes down to skill, I like Armada's YL. It's pretty tight.

HBox's Jiggs will NEVER beat Armada's YLink. It has nothing to do with HBox "not knowing how to approach," it's the matchup. Jiggs CAN'T approach YLink. All YLink needs to do is wait in his shield with a bomb. THAT'S IT. It shuts down all of Jiggs' approach options. If Jiggs hits the shield and doesn't space correctly, YLink just fullhops OoS and Jiggs eats a N-Air or bomb. If Jiggs spaces or tries to bait or whatever, YLink just jumps or rolls away and you have a reset. Jiggs simply can't win.

First match mightve been my favorite match of the tournament. Different type of match, imo. It played like a futbol game. . . ya know? and this obv wont be how melee will be from now on, cmon. . . . how many ylink mains do you know that are out there making it deep in tourneys?
I know what the commentators said, but that doesn´t save them from being Scrubs: they´re still complaining about how Armada and Hungrybox play just because they think that the game should only be played in the way they like to.
I HATE that sentiment to not cheer for someone because they are playing "gay". Armada and Hbox are playing to WIN. That's the POINT of tournaments. This match was one of the most entertaining I've ever watched because you can feel their emotions throughout. The tension, strategy, and frustration are really evident and contribute to the match. It's not all about APM and crazy tech skill; sometime you have to sit back and watch the chess game. (ps: still better than Brawl)
There are really good players out there facing MUs like Marth vs. Sheik or IC's vs. Peach who tough it out and try to better themselves and the MU with their main, so it's hard for me to respect switching to a second to avoid the much less unfair Peach vs. Puff MU. I used to play YL, so while I know YL vs. Puff is not free (although it definitely is boring to watch -.-), I still have to respect HBox for toughing it out when he could switch to one of the many characters with favorable MUs vs. YL.
The commentators and crowd should show some god damn respect, even if it was not an entertaining match. If you want "Happy Feet" and "I killed Mufasa", go watch that instead. These are the top of the elite. They should be booing you.
I understand why some (almost everyone) hate this matches but I fucking hate Jigglypuff and have done that sience early 05 (when I started playing this game seriously). Y link is the way for me to beat Puff :P Hbox
The commentators say they don't understand, but yet he says,"We know how to approach. We may lose doing it but..." There's their answer why HBox and Armada aren't approaching, the would lose. This is winner's semi, this is not the time to play dumb and approach at the wrong time.
@lamdash I agree that it's implausible, but I still think it could be done. I mean. That shield keeps getting smaller as long as Puff keeps the pressure on, and YL has to toss that bomb eventually. I think with SH nairs and fairs (moves that stay out longer than bair), it'd be doable (this is of course assuming a very skilled player). There were times that Hbox seemed to get the right idea--ex. fake an aerial into a grab, start combo. But then he'd start full hop bairing and lose.

The commentary was speaking truth. They weren't blaming the players, they were lamenting the fact that the game has evolved to this point.

@ajpanton (and also Armada, I suppose) Now, I don't think Jiggs is a "gay" character But it seems like you do (and Armada is on the record as calling her gay and saying she "deserves" Young Link). I don't think the YL campy stuffs is bad or wrong either, but I'm just wondering how what Armada's doing is any better. I'm not trying to criticize, and sorry if this seems rude, but I'm legitimately curious as to how what Armada is doing is "different" in your (and his) perspective.

@Artaneius I beg to differ. All it takes is one player to get ballsy and just run in. But who wants to lose? The game has progressed a lot more than it has back in the Ken days. Yeah I like the combos and aggressive style, that's why Mango is my dude. But when it comes down to skill, I like Armada's YL. It's pretty tight.

young link is NOT a jigglypuff counter. hungrybox played the match-up wrong and armada is amazing. it's not young link here it's ARMADA. i don't think anyone else could do this to hbox with young link, but i'd love for someone to prove me wrong.
Aww, Hungrybox just started to adapt to Armada in the last set, but it was too late. but lol @ Brandon and Phil losing their patience in just 2 minutes into the first set. I probably would of went to watch another match, too many people hating on them for having higher expectations on this hyped match.

HBox's Jiggs will NEVER beat Armada's YLink. It has nothing to do with HBox "not knowing how to approach," it's the matchup. Jiggs CAN'T approach YLink. All YLink needs to do is wait in his shield with a bomb. THAT'S IT. It shuts down all of Jiggs' approach options. If Jiggs hits the shield and doesn't space correctly, YLink just fullhops OoS and Jiggs eats a N-Air or bomb. If Jiggs spaces or tries to bait or whatever, YLink just jumps or rolls away and you have a reset. Jiggs simply can't win.
man i remember watching the ending of game 1 live was ridiculously entertaining all things considered
it still makes literally no sense that when hungrybox is standing still on top platform that armada would choose to have an extra bit of invincibility instead of just going down and hitting him

First match mightve been my favorite match of the tournament. Different type of match, imo. It played like a futbol game. . . ya know?
and this obv wont be how melee will be from now on, cmon. . . . how many ylink mains do you know that are out there making it deep in tourneys?
I know what the commentators said, but that doesn´t save them from being Scrubs: they´re still complaining about how Armada and Hungrybox play just because they think that the game should only be played in the way they like to.
I HATE that sentiment to not cheer for someone because they are playing "gay". Armada and Hbox are playing to WIN. That's the POINT of tournaments. This match was one of the most entertaining I've ever watched because you can feel their emotions throughout. The tension, strategy, and frustration are really evident and contribute to the match. It's not all about APM and crazy tech skill; sometime you have to sit back and watch the chess game. (ps: still better than Brawl)
There are really good players out there facing MUs like Marth vs. Sheik or IC's vs. Peach who tough it out and try to better themselves and the MU with their main, so it's hard for me to respect switching to a second to avoid the much less unfair Peach vs. Puff MU. I used to play YL, so while I know YL vs. Puff is not free (although it definitely is boring to watch -.-), I still have to respect HBox for toughing it out when he could switch to one of the many characters with favorable MUs vs. YL.

I understand why some (almost everyone) hate this matches but I fucking hate Jigglypuff and have done that sience early 05 (when I started playing this game seriously).

Save the opinions for later. Commentary is supposed to enhance the match, not detract from it.
The commentators say they don't understand, but yet he says,"We know how to approach. We may lose doing it but..." There's their answer why HBox and Armada aren't approaching, the would lose. This is winner's semi, this is not the time to play dumb and approach at the wrong time.
@lamdash I agree that it's implausible, but I still think it could be done. I mean. That shield keeps getting smaller as long as Puff keeps the pressure on, and YL has to toss that bomb eventually. I think with SH nairs and fairs (moves that stay out longer than bair), it'd be doable (this is of course assuming a very skilled player). There were times that Hbox seemed to get the right idea--ex. fake an aerial into a grab, start combo. But then he'd start full hop bairing and lose.
