i started checkin out competitive smash when ultimate came out, found last stock legends and this set. Hearing the crowd absolutely lose their shit over seein a fox move crazier than they ever seen and waffs classic commentary gave me huge chills i rewatched this set so many times. Been playing melee every day for 3 years now because of this
Christ, when Mango shines Taj off the stage at 3:00. That entire, like, second and a half of movement was so smooth and doing a single input wrong could have left Mango helplessly falling to his death.
I think it's all the little leadups. Like how M2K says "aiming behind" and "firing early" y'know? So starting at like 235 he starts with nair-shine/drill shine strings and the movement just throws Taj off to the point where he has to play so defensively that he's predictable. It's a great tactic. It's why Falco/Fox/Marth are the best characters in the game.
He said afterward on Smashboards that he considered it, but decided he wasn't going to take three games off of Mango with Mewtwo and didn't want to slow down Mango's play at all. In effect he sacrificed his last game in the hope of giving us all the most amazing Grand Finals we could have. Pretty cool! Though I'd liked to have seen it too. I really hope Taj enters singles at some big thing at least one more time. Couldn't believe the show he put on here.

@NaotaTakkun You can, and you should when you can time it and pull it off. Timed grabs out of shield while being shield pressured is actually a pretty recent metagame that used to be frowned upon back in the day. Always gotta be careful of good spacing though, those are tricky.

@skudzer1985 The opponent can recover high and get back on the stage or a higher platform, they could stall and hit you off the ledge, they could fall straight toward the edge or stage from the air. There are so many different ways to approach recovering and guarding that you have to be a good player in order to use them. Also, by not using a game mechanic available to you, you are setting arbitrary limitations on yourself Smash with a square arena would have no victory condition...
I look back at this video and remember how people complained about the laser thing here but say nothing when he did it to an ice climber player not to long ago. They say nothing at that point.
Sometimes when I get beaten, I think of that poor dude Taj during this set and I'm "oh well, could've been worse !" If I was one of his close friends, I'd message him this video every once in a while just for trolling :D
