Perhaps that's the next thing Lego comes with, instead of being able to buy a set, you buy credits to operate a Lego claw, which attempts to grab a set for you from the pile. And it will fail 99.999999% of the time, so their profits go up even more, ;-)
I really don't see what lego was thinking with this set. It has less functions, less pieces, less stability, a larger price and is uglier than the volvo and the only thing that is new is the claw which I would say is worse.
the volvo was also designed with the option to add power functions right out of the box, it seems like it would be very difficult to modify this new model to be motorized
i have the volvo and it was one of the best price to function ratio set, i recommended it to a lot of people as a first technic set for their kids...and it was like 75 euros new for a long time. and here is this wobbly shit for 150!!! it costs as much as the tow truck or let's say the Mack Anthem. i don't understand what this company is thinking sometimes, some sets are lavishly overindulges (like the camaro really needed 3 different color stripes) and that here is this (and the monstrously priced 6x6 tow truck from the past) to make up for it. seriously the marketing department there should be sacked en block
Nice video @sariel, as usual 🙂 Found a small typo in subtitles at 10:10 - you are reffering to 42046 set but it should be rather 42042 - Crawler, imho.
Watching this video got me thinking about the Mindstorms product line, and the target market shift - it was intended for young adults (16-30ish years) back in the early days of the line, but it seems they want to move it toward 10-14 years. Why can't we have 2 sets, one targeted toward younger audiences and one targeted for adults, available? The ports should be interchangeable to allow seamless transfer between the two as a transition - basically an "Intro to Robotics" set and an "Intermediate Robotics" set. Advanced would delve into Arduino/RPi stuff if they choose to do so.
I'd love to mount the top of this to the back section of a set like 42070. I missed out on set 8868, and would love to have something similar to the Lego classic.
As owner of 42053. This new Material Handler look so awful. I going skip this one. BTW, This year 2022 all Technic set already done review by Sariel. Still looking forward on Set 10300 review. So now Sariel can fully focus on his moc project.
The same... It would be a great set, but now, after 42053, it must jump over its head to be better. But, even worse, being a "low cost" version it actually cost higher.
Hey Sariel! It would be great if the audience could see your setup for the speed builds. I hate having the camera where you put it because it's hard to see around it. Is there specific gear that you use to avoid that or do you just have to build like that for the channel?
Also worth mentioning the 42053 Volvo was designed to be motorised out of the box and included the compressor cylinder for that purpose. My theory into why this set is so expensive is that it was supposed to be a licensed set (Sennebogen) but for whatever reason that got canned so they released a debranded version for the same price they were going to charge before.
13:55 omg the volvo has come from the future year 20162 when prices are reasonable and sets have b model i want now go to year 20162 now i have reason to buy lego delorean to go that year
Wow, I've never seen the Euro price be so significantly cheaper than the Dollar price, but even the 120€ is still abnoxiusly high. Shame, because I think it's a pretty good set, and I also like that it's not yellow this time. Great review Sariel :D
i dont know i whant to like it but i just have to compare it with 42053 90€ more pieces same functions 42128 130 start now 170 way more pieces 42097 90€ nearly same functions 42080 130€ but power functions included 42121 40€!! not realy the same but 569 pices (86 alone chains) compared to 835 here i dont know so each of the above sets is, at least from my point of view, supirior. What i like is the red! and the problems you mention with the Knobs falling of, i had the same issue with some of the newer sets, 42122 jeep wrangler/42123 mc larren/42121 excavator (so basicly since 2021 sets)
I have the Volvo version mentioned and it is a lovely set. It can also be combined with a Power Functions motor to run the pneumatic pump. Can the modern motors also be used in this way? My PF kit is aging now and I am wondering about replacing with the new system, but it does not look quite so easy to use for MOC builds.
PU works almost like PF for upgrading, just get the Box with manual switches (the one used in the 42145, can be bought separatly too) or use the bluetooth one and one of the many apps (I can reccomend official PowerdUP or Brickcontroller2 from experience) to programm it to run continuously
Besides the price, there are two main things I don't like about this set. First, the lack of motor upgradeability. The LEGO Technic ew160e was motor upgradeable and so were plenty of other pneumatics sets. Also, the steering gear is on the same side as the steering mechanism. It makes the material handler difficult to roll around and steer, so I wish that the steering gear were on the opposite side of the steering mechanism
I feel like there are some small changes that would have made this set better for the price. For example, it could have had stearing on both axles instead of just one. Similarly, the outriggers in the front and the back could have been linked together rather than all of them opperated individually. Regarding the pneumatics, perhaps one of the large cylinders could have been replaced with two of the slimmer, long cylinders, at least for lifting the boom. I can't imagine that these changes would have affected the price of the set by all that much.
Nice parts. I'd like to get my hands on those waste handler bucket pieces for a moc. And yeah. This is flat out meant to be a $100 set, what the heck Lego.
Pretty good set, not one that will make history as one of the greatest ever, but more or less everything a good Technic set should be. Good functionality and play value, and Pneumatics is always great. And a lack of a B-model, it's a shame but I've gotten used to that. So in itself a perfectly fine set....except for that outlandish price tag.
This set would have benefited from a cheap, simple air tank. I wonder why Lego skipped that piece completely. It worked so well in 8459 for example, and it definitely enhances the play function, as you don't have to pump for each funtion element, but pump ahead into the tank for reserve.
With exception of a few Educational sets, airtanks have been abandoned by LEGO 20 years ago. Apparently they were deemed too expensive / not useful enough.
I like this new focus on functionality that we see with the H2 sets of 2022. Hope this continues. Unfortunately this will not be a buy for me as it has to few new parts to be interesting. The heli on the other hand... =D As for the price, this will come very cheap at sales...
This set is very much Technic with the functions it has. It's just a shame it's so massively overpriced, especially in the US; UK price isn't as bad but it's still not good to begin with. Not only is this much more expensive than the Volvo set from 2016, it's crazily the same price as the Heavy-Duty Tow Truck in the US, which is also $150, has the pneumatics, has roughly 2.5 times the number of pieces and is much bigger as a result. And that Tow Truck set has had discounts lately as well, being even cheaper than the Material Handler in the UK. This set's retail price should be half the amount.
And the Volvo wasnt a cheap set in 2016 either... But this thing is worse in every possible way, exept for the new cylinders. They should have just re-released the volvo, although that is a 170-200€ set by todays lego pricing. Im so glad that other brands with the same quality exist... I hope Lego learns thier Lesson and we get back to old quality sets someday...
Affordable? Compared to the 42128 tow truck for the same price can't really say it's affordable to get your hands on pneumatic stuff. Also why not mentioning the lack of motor upgradability? That's for sure an extra con...
How can it have "excellent playability" while the "grabber is seriously underpowered" and "the arm is difficult to operate precisely"? Same thing goes for "not bad looks" while have a "bare-bones chassis with too much bending"? While I like Sariel clearly calling out the outrageous price compared to previous models (not only 42053 but also to 42128) I think he was much too nice to this set.
Well that's what these things can only do in real life as well, grab bikes with people on them. Perfect 10/10 set. Seriously now, it should've been 20 eur less and it still would've been at the upper price limit for such a joke of a set. Glad to see the helicopter is pretty good tho.
120€ or 150$ for 800 pieces ??? Urhh that's too steep of a rise, I knew lego wanted to pump up their prices "because of inflation" but fr this is too much of a jump for me to follow, screw them.
4 years ago I got the Mack Anthem for 99 euros and they are charging 120 for that, with no license, 3 times less parts and less functions and its Pretty ugly. Definitely not worth the money and not a good direction for lego, still a great review 💪👍

The grabber reminds me of those claw machines where you try to win toys but the claw is way too loose to grab anything😂
Perhaps that's the next thing Lego comes with, instead of being able to buy a set, you buy credits to operate a Lego claw, which attempts to grab a set for you from the pile. And it will fail 99.999999% of the time, so their profits go up even more, ;-)
Likewise they have a useless grip ;)
@@NLGeebee Except on our wallet, at least they try to get and keep a tight grip on that ;-)
I really don't see what lego was thinking with this set. It has less functions, less pieces, less stability, a larger price and is uglier than the volvo and the only thing that is new is the claw which I would say is worse.
And it doesn’t have top level brand cooperation. LEGO even doesn’t pay for license, but price $150
the volvo was also designed with the option to add power functions right out of the box, it seems like it would be very difficult to modify this new model to be motorized
I motorised that set and it was adorable. Perhaps a little squishy though due to limited exterior reinforcement due to limited space

Exactly. It has good playability but the heavy duty tow truck has over double the pieces for the same price

looks fairly easy to mod for power functions or control+

I just build like that for the channel and it's quite uncomfotable.

42053 was released in 20162 year? :D
Thanks for your review Sariel, very exhaustive. Will skip as I already have the 42053. Expensive set this is.
At the same price, with similar pneumatics parts, 42128 Heavy-duty tow truck has 2017 pieces! I don't know why this Material Handler is so expensive.
yes, it's completely incomprehensible! 42128 is much bigger and more interesting in function and build. Buying this set is just pointless
13:55 omg the volvo has come from the future year 20162 when prices are reasonable and sets have b model i want now go to year 20162 now i have reason to buy lego delorean to go that year

I have the Volvo version mentioned and it is a lovely set. It can also be combined with a Power Functions motor to run the pneumatic pump. Can the modern motors also be used in this way? 120 is too much but 50€ is also unrealistic
I and my son love my 42053. Apart from price or price per piece or B-model or ... It simply looks MUCH better 😃
Ok so for the price of 100 euros should you get one?
I got a mid-roll ad for a real telehandler (Merlo?). I've never been in the market for a telehandler. Someone screwed up the AdSense algorithm.
13:58 released in the year "20162"
When "no B model" is so bad you have to list it twice in the Cons.
Why hasn't Lego made a right angle pneumatic pipe piece so that the hoses when joined to the cylinders look more realistic?
I feel like there are some small changes that would have made this set better for the price. For example, it could have had stearing on both axles instead of just one. Your Final Note could have stayed on the screen for longer but is on point.
two axle steering would be cool, maybe a 6 cylinder motor? more pieces in general to justify the price.
a 6 cylinder would be easiely possible...
No new parts, so a typical model I'm going to build from parts I already own in the classic yellow/black colour scheme.
my exact thoughts but nowadys nobody seems to "unbuild" there legomodels anymore and mostly use them to build once or for moc parts only.
