NASA didn't "settle" on the Omega: Speed Master, it was the only watch to pass every test. Extreme: Heat, Moisture, Vacuum, Pressure, Precision, and Sub-Zero. No other watch even came in a close second.
@@vidalroland there's not many lakes to go swimming in on the moon... Or more relevantly, inside the rocket command module or lander. If you did make it super waterproof, you'd also need to consider how to protect it from the extreme negative pressure caused by the near vacuum of space too... So... Horses for courses...
Retro Rabbit - They did land in he sea when coming back to earth, but O suppose they could have gotten away with 50m WR as they weren’t swimming or diving!
@Dave Cochrane good advice. To my eye the hesalite looks much nicer, mainly due to the lovely curved edges which look amazing as you tilt it away from you.
Great, great review...plus your enthusiasm is infectious! In 1988 I bought a used 1970 Omega Speedmaster Professional from a mom & pop jewelry store in Manhattan for $375. I ended up selling it on eBay for almost $2,000 in 2008. At the time it needed about $800 in repairs. It did have the upgraded skeleton back and the modern bracelet. I loved that watch and vowed to buy another. However I purchased a Bulova Moon Watch that I absolutely love. It looks like a combo of the Speedmaster Professional and the Speedmaster Mark 2. I recently walked into Tourneau in Manhattan to peruse. A 20-year salesman noticed my Bulova and asked which Speedmaster model it was. I told him that it was a Bulova Moon Watch and he was blown away. The build quality on the Bulova Moon Watch is superb, and the 262 khz Precisionist movement more accurate than any watch that doesn't have an Atomic movement. To top it off, hit the chronograph button and the chronograph second hand sweeps like a manual or automatic. The dial is magnificent with layers of detail. A friend also has the Alpha Speedmaster "homage". Honestly, I don't know how Alpha does it for under $200? It has a manual wind movement that is really nice. Honestly it's pretty difficult to comprehend spending $5,000 on the Speedy with these two alternatives.
A timeless piece. It surprisingly goes well on my 16cm wrist. The hesalite version is the one to get, it looks fantastic. Omega Speedmaster man on the moon, man on the F moon !
Wonderful, entertaining review! After owning over 50 affordable watches over the past three years, I have decided to take the plunge and get a Speedmaster to see what all the buzz is about. In fact, I'm sitting here waiting for the UPS truck right now -- I am very excited!
50 affordables over 3 years, 1 watch every 3 weeks, were they made from wood chips and lego? ;) Did you flip regularly or just collected what you liked on a budget?
You can get it with sapphire and also there is one with the sapphire case back known as the sapphire sandwich. It makes the dial look different though. There is a milky ring.
I grew up watching the Apollo missions as a child, and had a love of everything aviation related. This is reflected in my modest watch collection, citezen nighthawk, seiko sna411,and casio gravitymaster. The Speedmaster is and always will be my grail watch. Thanks for the wonderfull review, allowing me to live vicariously through your channel.
Hi, I bought the same legendary moonwatch but with sapphire glass version, almost 2 years ago and still loving it. It is a fantastic piece and has become my favorit until now. Try using it with the nato strap, it gives a kind of special tactical look on your watch.
I just picked up one of these and did an unboxing too. It was a real pain in the ass to film as well with the size of that box. I had to have the camera way back but it worked out haha. What great packaging though! I don't think I'll ever flip that bad boy. What an absolutely stunning piece.
I’ve wanted this model for the longest time! Fascinated by space, the moon, the Apollo missions all of my life I’d still love one. But watching this model skyrocket over the last several years has put it out of reach. Suffice to say I “settled” for a Bulova Moon watch chronograph just over 12-18 months ago. And WOW!!! Firstly it too got a guernsey on an Apollo mission... Ok so not officially😉 Secondly this homage is bloody awesome & stunning. For around $800 it is a damn good compromise! So I’ll just chip away, save my pennies & hopefully before too long I’ll get my personal “Holy Grail”... Great vid as always Jody👍🏼😎
was in hong kong 15 years ago and got a surprisingly good copy of this for £20. ok the lume is not good the small dials don’t work and as for water resistance 👎, but it has a jewelled automatic movement which also hand winds. is still accurate and it’s never let me down. unlike more expensive watches i have bought. it would not have survived a moon mission but at my age neither would i
Mine scratched a bit at first, to my chagrin, but seems to rarely scratch these days. Don't think I've used the Polywatch for a couple of years. Great watch!
For sport watches, hacking does make more scene, more so a chronograph. It's nice to see the chrono sec hand runs in sync with the sub sec hand for precision. Also, lateral clutch has more wear and tear, and, need to mentioned that the chrono function should not run continuously. In price comparison, the seiko 8R48 has a column wheel vertical clutch, and, the unique 3 pointed hammer and heart-shaped cam ensures the perfect synchronization of the hands flyback function at pin-point. My srq031 which cost less than 3k has Zaratsu finishing, and, it's accurate to 3 spd. The 2mm protruding glass, interestingly, makes the watch looks compact (30mm dial). The fine soft cordovan straps wears so comfortable. I like this better than my daytona. Just stunning 😁
Peter Picallo I was saying the same about Daytonas and Subs- they were £3450 and £2350 respectfully at one point... and I bought a Corum to be different. 🤦🏻♂️
If you couldn't make more than a three to four times return with that money in other ways since the 90's you need to rethink your investments. No regrets there.
What you describe as the "decorative giant case back" is in fact a decorative paper weight for ones executive desk. Also, after a recent price increase, the moonwatch as reviewed is now £3,680 Pounds Sterling in the UK. Still tremendous value.
The most noticeable "feature" of this watch to me is how reflective the stainless bezel is. Everytime it caught the light behind your camera the entire bezel lit up like it was lume or flashing...that was really impressive. I mean it's nothing revolutionary, but I've never seen a watch change its appearance that much. Pretty cool. I actually find the dial quite busy, for some reason the chronograph hand always draws my attention. Neat story though, and super cool watch. Looking forward to the next one!
I had no idea this was a grail watch for me, until I got one on my wrist. I own a couple of DeVille's and a Seamaster, but to "complete" my collection I need a Speedy. I've auditioned both the sapphire and the Hesalite models and for me it's no contest. I understand sapphire is more practical, but if I wanted practical I'd get a quartz Seiko and be done with it. I hear from an AD that they may be upgrading the movement. If true that's going to make these 1861 movements much more valuable.
im lucky enough to have this exact model and the box is bloody massive, but everything is real quality. its a grail for me and i have owned it for the last 2 years or so and still love it.
Hi John, yes it worked fully in the vacuum of space and was worn outside the spacesuit. It was sealed ( as in water resistance ) . It's a wind up watch so the effects of space wouldn't interfere with its movement hence it was manually wound up and not automatic . An automatic watch wouldn't have kept time as the zero gravity would have hindered the rotor . Hope that helps !
@@nicholasdavies8795 So it was pressurized in the vacuum? Obviously it would be wound while in a pressurized environment? Screw down crown and don't touch the pushers?
My first hesalite scratched like a sob, but I'd learned a bit by the time I had my second. I find that I'm incredibly quick to move my left arm away from doors or any other potential scratch demons. Now, I find that I can keep a hesalite crystal like new for quite some time before scratch remover is necessary.
Great use of "Walking on the Moon" by The Police! So appropriate!!! LOL Love the watch! My all time favorite and the one I cherish and desire over all watches! 3-5 grand is currently out of my budget but who knows, maybe someday! Thanks for the lovely review!
Great review. For my taste, walked the line perfectly between recognizing the history of this but still pointing out the attributes that might not make this the watch for everyone. I think it's stunning, and it used to be my grail. However, between my small wrists, not being a chronograph guy, and, when I'm being honest, preferring the modern conveniences of an automatic movement and a sapphire crystal, if I ever step up to a luxury watch, I'd probably wind up (pun not intended) getting something else. From the few higher-end watches I've handled in person, a smaller Tudor Black Bay or Ranger or an Oris Sixty Five come to mind first. Loved both of those so much more than I expected.
I've got an speedy 1152 in silver. More practical as an auto with a date. Great size, and much more affordable on the used market. Worth a look. As much as I'd love a MOTFM, unless I win the lotto I would end up sleeping on the couch.......actually probably in a tent in the backyard.
This is probably my favorite chronograph; it's stripped down to it's bare essentials, with no detail on the dial that's not planned and thought out to make it clearer and more usable, and the bracelet is amazing. Really, the only knock on it is the water resistance; at over $3,000, I'd expect it to at least have 100m.
The Watch Regulator that makes total sense. But, even though I think the dial, bezel, and case design are nearly perfect (not any extraneous decoration, every design decision well thought out), I couldn't get past it NOT HACKING. Shudder. It's like how someone who hates, say, tomatoes feels when handed a great sandwich... and finds one hidden in the middle.
If you want one to be authentic as possible you need to buy the new one with the 321 movement. Also has the Beige lume instead of the green. And the original dot over 90. However its about 12 to 13 grand as opposed to 4 to 5.
Terrific review as usual! Love the understated, elegant simplicity of this watch itself. The contrast between it and the ostentatious packaging is almost jarring. It's a tool watch with amazing provenance. It's the history which sells this watch, and the reason why I own one myself.
One of my favourite watches of all time. The MKII pro is actually my favourite - the moon watch that never made it to the moon. Omega had addressed some of the issues with the original watch design for space use but NASA couldn't be arsed testing it and stuck to the original.
I haven't got the moon watch as i wanted a date on mine but i have just treated myself to a speedmaster. Loving it and i think its just as good as a Rolex Daytona. I have a 1997 blue dial seamaster for my everyday watch and the speedmaster is my posh watch for special occasions.
Received a Bulova Lunar Pilot for Christmas, and let me tell you: If you're practical like me and you just can't see shelling out the cash for an antiquated tool watch sold as a luxury item but really want to get as close as you can to the fizz factor that a speedy has, you wont be disappointed with the Bulova. Plus its the most accurate chronograph you'll probably ever use! Definitely not on the level of aesthetic perfection that a speedy has (or if you're me, you prefer the reduced or the '57 model) but closer than anything else on the planet, as per NASA's specifications.
i had thought this watch might be my retirement gift to myself, but Hesalite and not automatic pretty much makes it a no-go. I have to admit you make the vintage distortion more appealing than the other kind.
soylent green I'm really glad it isn't automatic. It just makes the watch so much more special. It looks incredibly vintage and the little scuffs that you get on the hesalite just add to the charm.
That's a beautiful watch, I love it, but I'll have to do with my Seiko SND367. Besides, if I leave my glasses off and squint it almost looks the same....but not really.
My friend has the version with the sapphire crystal with open case back. His movement (co-axial) is beautifully finished. I also believe it's a column wheel based chronograph. I enjoyed the video.
Got the Omega Seamaster planet Ocean. Rarely use it. It's so special. Maybe some day i'll get the Speedmaster too,but I'm asking for too much i know. Thank you for this awesome video.
The Omega De Ville Tressor (25200bph, 60 hrs power reserve chronometer) is an example of a fine watch. For a connoisseur, A CENTRE THREE HANDS manual winding mechanism is the best of watches, with long minute hand, and an even longer second hand. Usually in Patek or Lange, we only see two hands or sub second hand manual winding watches. They reserved the CTH for their finest pieces. All good watch maker must have this caliber in their stable to be considered good. This kind of watch is very rare in the Swiss industry. Try find one in a Rolex and see what you get? But, strange, the Japanese made this kind of watches long ago, and, it seems like only Gerald Donovan who is aware of it, haha....For the vintage, you can even find the CTH manual wind done in 36,000 hi-beat, commonly found in Grand and King Seiko. For new GS, there's the SBGW series, the latest being the SBGW231. With 24 jewels, 72 power reserve, and mine is accurate to 1 sec in 3 days. And, the finishing is better than my Nautilus, both inside and out, including the finishing of the mechanism. But, the Nautilus, being auto, is not a True CTH. For a budget CTH, there's the Orient Monarch. It's specs are similar to the Rolex 6694, only that it top the Rolex with hacking function. The basis of a good auto mechanism is a good manual mechanism. Collecting watches is so much fun if one understand this basic principle.
I have the Dark Side Of The Moon (all ceramic case), I don't wear it often but every time I do everyone loves it...I want to pick up the Grey Side version at some point but it is way down the list of purchases,
I'm conflicted when it comes to value of Speedy Pro: antiquated movement, plastic hands, so-so bracelet and surprising thickness for an manual on one hand. On the other same 3500$ buys you a IWC Mark XVIII with a (beep) ETA2892 or SW300. Or a Panerai with modified Unitas, but we all know "Paneristi" is Italian for "Makes bad decisions".
Can you tell me where you bought your automatic watch winders from please.I'd like to get some for my watches. I've never seen them before. Very handy.
I bought mine in 1996 and the bracelet at the time was way better. It didn't have those protruding midlinks so the lug to lug measure was perfect for my small wrist. This model, with an effective lug to lug measure of 53 mm, would be impossible to wear on my 16 cm wrist.
I just seen this, a bit late I know but I have to address the WR issue with Speedmasters. I have had my speedy new since 1985. Its absolutely up to swimming and showering submerging, no problem . I suspect, like IWC and their 60m WR it is a true 50 0r 60m depth . Just needed to be said I think. I also think that the 'story' is not what got me going, despite my 7 decades. It has always been a really good watch and begs the question; how good does a mechanical watch need to be? For me this is an icon as the old Subs were. I have a 16610 (1991), which I have owned and worn since new , on a rotation with the speedy. The speedy is consistently +3 and the Sub +1. I think they just made them to last and work well without all the parachrom hair springs and alike and all that silly ceramic nonsense and lume that lasts forever. Give me good old tritium and patina every day
Not purchased an Omega since 2001. Have been on the seiko, timex and Vostok journey with a handful of random Homage watches along the way. Have decided to just go back to one Onega purchase per year. Can you help me with your recomendación of trusted preowned retailers to start me off ?
Jody, I know you, like me, are a fan of Casio. The Speedy isn't happening for me now or in the future (I'm just being real), so I fed the endless cravings with a Casio MTP4500D. It's a watch filled with pros and cons and needs a good review on RUclips. I know just the guy to do it too! At $40US on ebay, it won't break any bank either.
I disagree with his last comments as he said in a way it's an older style chronograph, and there are better options out there. I go by the saying, "if it's not broken don't fix it."
I’m a retired working man (divorced 25 years ago). This is the only luxury watch I still lust after and may acquire before I die. ( I already have the Bulova “other” Moonwatch-Apollo 15)
Life is too short. Buy new and cheap(grey market) and you’ll probably get more or less what you paid back. I got it on 0% credit as I thought that if I wait they’ll probably increase the price by then
Applied tritium is antiquated. Tritium tubes are not. And if it used to have that (did it actually have tubes?), it should have kept that. Superluminova is inferior to trit tubes.
Thanks for this great review. It certainly is an impressive timepiece. If i'am not mistaken, i could see the fun you had unboxing it. Now waiting for the next one! Love the T-shirts too!
My GRAIL Jody. To me, it looks better with the Omega custom Speedmaster Leather Rally strap, also much more comfortable. After all, this timepiece was originally designed to be an Auto Racing Chronograph. I will own one... It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine!
As far as it`s not 1to1 copy of the 57` streight lugs I`d prefer up to date co-axial automatic sapphire crystal and clear caseback piece. Of course any of the speedmasters moonwatch is my holy grail but the newest is on top of my list.
This is my grail watch and one day I will own one. In the meantime have you ever thought about doing a video for homage versions. There's a few nice ones out there from casio, Seiko and citizen which have their own take on the speedmaster. Interestingly, up until a few years ago all those makers offered fairly close matches which are now discontinued. I wonder if omega threatened legal action which caused them to diversify to the current offerings.
How about taking a look at the Bligher Bathyscape homage, that would be nice! Love your videos, and the fact that you also look for “most watch for the smallest price “
I like how they give you an eyeglass to see all the scratches you'll accidentally put on it lol

If you want one to be authentic as possible you need to buy the new one with the 321 movement. Also has the Beige lume instead of the green. And the original dot over 90. However its about 12 to 13 grand as opposed to 4 to 5.
Rightly said you buy the story and not just the watch...love that clasp...wow Sea Dweller up next...super excited...
This is your best review. Thank you Mr X
Terrific review as usual! Love the understated, elegant simplicity of this watch itself. The contrast between it and the ostentatious packaging is almost jarring. It's a tool watch with amazing provenance. It's the history which sells this watch, and the reason why I own one myself.
Matt Case the unchanged vintage design and wonderful movement did it for me
One of my favourite watches of all time.
Just added an Omega Rally strap and deployment buckle to mine. Transforms it wonderfully 👍🏻
Ordered mine tonight. What a beautiful watch. Terrific video, sir.
Nice watch! I bet it would take some time to learn and understand the tachymeter function?
I don't understand. There is also an automatic version. E.g. ruclips.net/video/msmirfje-AE/видео.html
David Ongaro: the automatic version is aimed at the customer who finds manually winding a watch such a chore. After all, it is so exhausting.
That's a beautiful watch, I love it, but I'll have to do with my Seiko SND367. Besides, if I leave my glasses off and squint it almost looks the same....but not really.
Great unboxing, I have a Seiko “Pogue” which was the first automatic chronograph in space, not as iconic as the moon watch but it will do for now
My friend has the version with the sapphire crystal with open case back.
Can’t decide, sapphire sandwich or hesilite without open case back
t con i took the one with open case back... it‘s just fucking beautiful🔥🔥🔥
Man I want one of these so bad....
The Omega De
Ville Tressor (25200bph, 60 hrs power reserve chronometer) is an example of a
fine watch. For a connoisseur, A CENTRE THREE HANDS manual winding mechanism is
the best of watches, with long minute hand, and an even longer second hand. Usually
in Patek or Lange, we only see two hands or sub second hand manual winding
watches. They reserved the CTH for their finest pieces. All good watch maker
must have this caliber in their stable to be considered good. This kind of
watch is very rare in the Swiss industry. Try find one in a Rolex and see what
you get?
But,
strange, the Japanese made this kind of watches long ago, and, it seems like only
Gerald Donovan who is aware of it, haha....For the vintage, you can even find
the CTH manual wind done in 36,000 hi-beat, commonly found in Grand and King
Seiko. For new GS, there's the SBGW series, the latest being the SBGW231. With
24 jewels, 72 power reserve, and mine is accurate to 1 sec in 3 days. And, the
finishing is better than my Nautilus, both inside and out, including the
finishing of the mechanism. But, the Nautilus, being auto, is not a True CTH.
For a budget
CTH, there's the Orient Monarch. It's specs are similar to the Rolex 6694, only
that it top the Rolex with hacking function. The basis of a good auto mechanism
is a good manual mechanism. Collecting watches is so much fun if one understand
this basic principle.
Or a Panerai with modified Unitas, but we all know "Paneristi" is Italian for "Makes bad decisions".
arek314 it's an amazing value for money chronograph
Super Dude thanks for your input shithead.
Beautiful but i think i’m gonna look for a second hand speedmaster reduced as I prefer an automatic movement & i’ve got skinny wrists. Good review! 👍
MrLadiesman216 the reduced just doesn't look right when you see a proper one
You should get the Bulova Moon watch in for review too! Not on too many people's radar, it seems.
Super Dude how is a super accurate Quartz that has horological history a POS?
Sorry. I'm new to watches. Also, what watches have they copied?
Lovely watch, congrats to the owner...
Give me good old tritium and patina every day
That intro song. Well done sir !
What´s the difference between the 005 and the 006? (last 3 Digits of the reference number)
How about the model “the dark side of the moon”?
I disagree with his last comments as he said in a way it's an older style chronograph, and there are better options out there. I go by the saying, "if it's not broken don't fix it."
Yes, a Speedy for the chanel I am so glad. BTW I have an ck2998 and I think you will love your Speedy
I’m a retired working man (divorced 25 years ago). This is the only luxury watch I still lust after and may acquire before I die. ( I already have the Bulova “other” Moonwatch-Apollo 15)
Jonathan Hansen don't wait. Get it
Life is too short. Buy new and cheap(grey market) and you’ll probably get more or less what you paid back. I got it on 0% credit as I thought that if I wait they’ll probably increase the price by then
Does the book come with all moon watches? as I am looking at getting one soon and would prefer the book
i got my speedy as a gift today
how can i telll if its crystal ir plastic ?
Beautiful finishing!!!! A gorgeous piece.
hi, been following your channel for a long time now. awsome content. can you please do video about how you got into collecting watches.
Ah that's one of my favorite Police songs! You should start doing wrist-checks before you get into the review :) nice as always!
As far as it`s not 1to1 copy of the 57` streight lugs I`d prefer up to date co-axial automatic sapphire crystal and clear caseback piece.
Of course any of the speedmasters moonwatch is my holy grail but the newest is on top of my list.
Love the Speedy Pro, wish I had Mister X's watch collection
Mate, you have no idea...... Explorer, multiple Daytonas, JLC, 5 digit sub, Sea Dweller..... 😻
mr bacchus I
A beauty. Great review. I prefer the gray and red Mark II reissue. Cheers.
I've been debating for years over getting the Omega Seamaster or the Moon watch (the real one! With the hesalite). Still can't make up my mind.
Can somebody please help me. What exact reference Speedmaster did Jack Swigert use to time the 14 sec burn? Can’t find it anywhere. Thanks.
Anyone know what kind of winders those are in the background?
This is my grail watch and one day I will own one. In the meantime have you ever thought about doing a video for homage versions. There's a few nice ones out there from casio, Seiko and citizen which have their own take on the speedmaster. Interestingly, up until a few years ago all those makers offered fairly close matches which are now discontinued. I wonder if omega threatened legal action which caused them to diversify to the current offerings.
Is there jomashop watch not come with the box?
Mr. X eh, Jody? I'm not buying it. Enjoy your new purchase. Lol!
Mr X ? Would he happen to be a Scotsman living in Australia by any chance ?
How about taking a look at the Bligher Bathyscape homage, that would be nice!
Love your videos, and the fact that you also look for “most watch for the smallest price “
Google Search has no idea what you're talking about.
Love the Speedmaster. Too bad this one wasn't part of the giveaway week....
A non-hacking, hand-winder with domed acrylic that’s been in outer space? I’ll stick with my Komandirskie at 1/100 the rubles. :)
