Shelby, if you want to be able to take more pain meds, alternate between ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I know acetaminophen is not as effective as ibuprofen, but you can take 1000 mg every 6 hours with 400 mg of ibuprofen in between (so pain meds every 3 hours, ibuprofen, then acetaminophen, then ibuprofen, etc. I had to do that after my tonsillectomy. You're an incredible human and I'm jealous of your twin sister Monica! Good luck!
My doctor told me that too - that you can alternate acetaminophen with ibuprofen so that they overlap a little and your pain management is more consistent
When my teething hurts I usually take nuromol which is basically a mixture of iburofen along with paracetamol. It does a reasonable job @ least for me anyway. There are other brands though, I liked the reckit benckiser nurofen nuromol the best plus it lasts longer as well. Though, it's an Australian open brand available here in australia though, not sure if it's available over there in the st8s
Yes as a nurse I can confirm this combination. Very good way to manage pain, even taking one Tylenol and Advil together can have similar pain relief effects similar to opioids.
Just take it slow. Healing requires a TON of energy after surgery. A few years back I had a tumor (fortunately benign) removed from my lower jaw. Medicare doesn't cover dental, so I had to go to a sliding-scale clinic at a dental school. I couldn't afford surgery at a hospital with general anesthesia, so I had to be conscious, on nitrous oxide and local anesthetic, while they cut open my jaw, removed the tumor, and ground away a safe margin of bone in case it was malignant. High anxiety. That side of my face looked like a bowling ball and was completely numb for quite a while. Just be patient, keep your mind occupied on other stuff during the healing period. A few months from now the pain and recovery period will be a distant memory. Hang in there, kiddo.
You spoke of your energy level and blood loss from surgery. I recovered faster looking into iron-rich foods. I ate a lot of spinach for one (can put in smoothies).
Yes! I'm chronically anemic and peas have sooo much iron, too. Plus you can make peas, kale, spinach, chard, etc. into creamy soups that are super yummy.
You are a trooper for real Shelby..... every time you cry my heart breaks (hope it doesnt sound creepy lol)... even though we cannot heal your pain i hope our support makes you feel better😅
You are definitely talking way better now! That x-ray was incredible . . . there is so much stuff in your face now. I didn't realize it required so many pins and things in there, no wonder you're swollen!
You look so good! I had double jaw surgery and chin surgery four years ago and I highly suggest if you still feel tightness once you’re fully healed to seek physical therapy. I waited a year and half after and it was long overdue. My surgeon said I never needed it but after just a few sessions in PT that wasn’t true.
Thanks a great sign you started to get feeling back and the tingly/cold signs! I know nothing compared to what you have. But when I got my wisdom teeth removed I ended up getting permanent nerve damage on my chin. So I completely understand the “annoying” feeling! But signs of tingling/cold feelings mean the nerves are starting to wake up! You got this! 💜
You’re dealing with the slow healing process, including the pain, and you still have time to vlog you’re progress. That is a lot of fortitude, that the rest of us might have difficulty doing.
you and monica make me wish I had a twin, you two have so much fun and take care of each other. Sorry to hear the swelling is taking so long to go down, you're a rockstar for vlogging and taking us through this!
you're looking freaking amazing!! i'm shocked your face is not bruised! I had yellow and purple on my face for a few weeks. not to mention that the swelling has gone down a lot. *AWESOME!*
Would love to hear a detailed over view of your surgery, how they approached your case, where they fractured the jaws, how they aligned your teeth back together, before and after's of your xray's (3d or cephalograms), -- basically anything in detail that you want to share I'm so interested to hear about!
I’m 1 week post-op on lower jaw surgery and the swollenness is really affecting my self confidence. Seeing your videos and transformation is giving me hope that it will get better and look better, it just takes a lot of time and healing. Thank you for sharing your experience!
You’re so brave! I remember when I was younger and an orthodontist told me that if I wanted perfect teeth I needed jaw surgery for both my top and bottom portions of my jaw. It was super scary and had no idea how to even proceed. My insurance probably would not cover it so I never looked seriously into it, but I looked online and the surgery is super serious. Some people mentioned that they didn’t get full feeling back around their mouth. Props to you for going through it and staying strong. Wishing you the best recovery.
Your post op looks so good! I didn't realize they can do the surgery now without wiring your jaw. My jaw clicks every time I open/talk, have constant humming in my right ear, can't eat hard/chewy foods, and can't wear headphones and headbands because of ear pressure pain, so i contemplated jaw surgery but was terrified of the post-op healing. Thank you for this series!
Looking much better Shelby! In truth I find it difficult to watch other people suffer (too sensitive probably), so it is only now after watching your "Why I had to get jaw surgery" video that I am able to return. I hope you continue to progress at a rate that makes you happy and thank you for making a great video despite your present circumstances.
You're a wee soldier! You know, there is someone out there who is about to or will one day get this surgery too and I bet these videos will be of great comfort to them
Makes me really sad though seeing one of my favorite RUclipsrs struggling! ** Although your family's support is amazing and overall it seems you are still having a nice time :-)
Anyone who says, not to talk it won't hurt so much..I'm pretty sure they meant it as being supportive and just trying to help you. And you have received MASSIVE love on here!!!
@@shelbychurchvlogs I kinda feel your pain!I got a slipped disc in dec 1999 and was deadass broke 2 weeks before I could buy ibuprofin!only slept exhaustion sleep, like 8 minutes at a time, also laid down in akward positions to ease the pain!when I finally bought ibuprofin, I actually slept 14 hours the first night!got off ibuprofin in 2003 when it burned a hole in my stomach, had ulcers before but that one nearly killed me, so I only use paracetamol now!
@@AntiUgg ty, I hope it will. I'd love to vlog the process. I'm actually an American living in Chile, South America. Things might be a little different.
Ibuprofen works 4-6 hours. If you need it every 4 take it every 4 hours BUT only take 400mg. The daily maximum is 2400 mg. You can boost ibuprofen with caffeine (I know you are trying to quit, but it will boost the pain reduction power). And if you can take acetaminophen, you can take it with ibuprofen. Follow package directions for the acetaminophen, and absolutely don't over do it. Ibuprofen isn't actually a pain killer, it's an anti-inflammatory. Acetaminophen is an analgesic, a pain killer.
Hope you feel better! I'm currently 4 weeks post op from foot surgery and I'm still swollen and can't walk for long periods of time. So here's to a good recovery for both of us!
I really really hope you can feel better very soon! Honestly, it’s quite devastating for any of your viewers to see you in this pain. Get well so soon. You got this!
It’s so cute how Monica asking you what you want to eat! Glad you both have such a strong bond and totally sucks she can’t stay at your house. I give you props on staying with her at the hotel to spend more time with her and Oliver. My question for your next video... Where did they make the incisions for your surgery? Did they take out the stitches already?
Feel better soon. I'm enjoying the updates. u already look so much better!! wishing u the best w the rest of your recovery ♥️ get well soon youa re so pretty
You could switch between Tylenol and ibuprofen if your doctor allows. I’m a nurse and that’s what we do for our patients 😁 that way you’re not overdoing it on the ibuprofen but you’re still covering the pain
Im glad you are healing up. hope your pain goes away and you heal fast. Im sure your video helps other people out there that need to same surgery. takes strength to share with others even when your not 100 percent at your best.
I had lower jaw surgery. I completely understand this and the recovery. Happy you are gaining feeling again. Almost 4 years later, still don’t have it all back (70% back).
Hey Shelby! I did my surgery 8 weeks ago! Everything will be better soon 🤍 Don’t compre yourself to others because every body is different, this is the best advice I can give.
I had jaw surgery and was doing laundry the next day! You must stay on top of your pain meds, even if you don’t think you need them. I was never in any pain. It was a walk in the park for me. You are going to love the results when you’re all healed. However, I was way more swollen that you are. Happy healing!♥️
You're doing great! Healing takes time. Soon you will recall it in terms of a funny story to tell friends. Be patient, recover step by step. No rush. So glad to see you active :)
I can say you look like you are doing well even though those first few weeks are tough. I had the surgery 10 years ago and it’s crazy seeing what I looked like a decade ago until now. It’s definitely worth it in the end.

Tender greens mashed potatoes and tomato soup was all i ate after i got my wisdom teeth taken out. not as extensive as jaw surgery. you're so strong shelby thank you for sharing your journey.
Lol, you look soooo cute with your swollen jaw. :) Love how open you are about it, and how you have continued to bring us with you through the process. Best of luck with your recovery, and don't forget the pain will pass! :)
I know you're trying to do a withdrawal from it, but, caffeine is actually good for pain and inflammation reduction! It also will boost the effectiveness of pain reducers like Ibuprofen, Aspirin, etc, making them more effective and the pain reduction lasts longer but DON'T use more than the recommended dosage of ANY pain relievers while taking caffeine or you will feel a "medication overdose" and when the Ibuprofen wears off a headache will actually feel worse than before you took it, but it's not a problem if you stay in or under the recommended dosage, which is easier to do since then medication lasts longer and is more effective so you will want less of it. A sudden stop of caffeine can also cause pain and headaches so doctors recommend a slower transition to going caffeine free by gradually reducing the amount you drink! Also, lightly (very lightly!) blowing out your cheeks will help get some flexibility back in them and the muscles controlling them. Don't do it to the point that it hurts a lot, just some light pressure moving air around inside your mouth like you are swishing mouthwash or water around (which is another good mouth exercise and helps keep the teeth healthy when brushing is difficult) for a minute or less is effective! Hoping the pain and healing process will be quick and as pain free as possible! Also raisins, grapes, apples, and oranges are good for Iron production and increasing your blood count and red blood cell production! Low amounts of Iron in the blood (common after surgery) can cause extreme fatigue, headaches, and cold hands and feet.
Try taking Tylenol too and switch it between ibuprofen. That’s what I did when I had pain when they didn’t last long. Switching them let’s u take more often CNN
Use Arnica gel!!!! I got a rhinoplasty and had almost no swelling when I got the cast off because of the gel!! Most people are extremely swollen getting their casts off so I swear by it. You can also take it by ingesting the ones you put under your tongue.
Wow 2 weeks already??!🥺😱🤎And it does make sense that you want to have some movement of your mouth and jaw so it won't go stiff. Kudos to Monica for stepping up to the plate to assist you!
I was supposed to get this surgery years ago but I was way too scared, and I regret it now because I still have bite problems. But seeing you go through it makes it a lot less scary. I know it will still be very difficult but it's really encouraging to see someone handle it so well.
All I can say is . You are fcking strong
Cheers to a speedy recovery

Wow 2 weeks already??!🥺😱🤎And it does make sense that you want to have some movement of your mouth and jaw so it won't go stiff. Kudos to Monica for stepping up to the plate to assist you!
I was supposed to get this surgery years ago but I was way too scared, and I regret it now because I still have bite problems. But seeing you go through it makes it a lot less scary. I know it will still be very difficult but it's really encouraging to see someone handle it so well.
