Jaw surgery week 3: having a hard time & going home

  • Today (the day I'm uploading this) it has officially been 3 weeks since I had jaw surgery. This vlog is from day 15-20 (week 3). I definitely am feeling a little frustrated with the progress of healing. I started comparing my progress to other people on RUclips and felt a little discouraged with how frozen my face was. I decided to fly home because I still don't have my energy back to make videos, or go and hang out with anyone really, so figured I'd rest in washington. I don't usually like to share such "down" moments, it's not really that fun, but I think it's good to document for anyone getting this surgery to realize what you are in for.

You should keep in mind the self-selection bias of people who post RUclips videos of themselves after surgery. Someone who is still swollen and not able to move their mouth is unlikely to post a video of themselves 2-3 weeks post surgery because they can’t talk and/or aren’t confident enough about the way they look to put a video of themselves on the internet (the same way you didn’t feel comfortable showing your face in an Instagram pic). For every video you saw of people recovering quickly post-op, there are probably 5 times as many people recovering at the same rate or slower than you but they’re not going to post a video showing off how swollen they still are and how insecure they feel.
That’s why it’s a true testament to your strength, character, and self confidence that you are willing to put your whole recovery process (both physical and mental) on the internet for people to see.

100% agree!!! Turmeric is an amazing anti-inflammatory and try more cbd in other forms you can get it (make sure there’s no thc!). Between the turmeric and the latte I could tell a HUGE difference. Keep resting and you’ll be back in no time.

At the end of the vlog you looked a lot less swollen!
I know it’s not the same. But when I had my four wisdom teeth removed, I was swollen more and longer than the standard for other people. At the end everything was fine. It’s okay that you’re taking a little bit longer. Have faith in your body! You’re doing amazing Shelby ♥️

Just like anything in life, try not to compare your recovery with other people's. People heal differently, just like they lose weight differently, or react to medications differently. Keep that gorgeous chin up. You got this, and by this time next year you won't even remember this healing process being as bad as it currently feels. 💙
Also, I'm hearing impaired, so I generally use subtitles on all media I watch. But yes, I could understand you without the open captions. ☺️

Hang in there, kiddo. Each patient's situation is different. Some heal faster, others heal more slowly. YOU WILL GET THERE. You have the spirit and the character to get through this and make it to the other side. You went back to work making video logs for your people almost immediately. That shows how much inner strength you have. Nothing's gonna keep this girl down!

For what it's worth, I've been following all your post surgery videos. To me, watching this video on my TV, this is the first time that your swelling has diminished to the point where I say to myself "she's beginning to look like her old self". You may notice improvement--or not--on a daily basis, but today is the first time you look much closer to the pre-surgery Shelby. Hope that makes you feel a little better. You are WAY braver than me. Believe me, I can relate to the unrelenting 24/7 discomfort.

Hi Shelby, first off, kudos for being so real and vulnerable on your recovery - appreciate that. I just had double jaw surgery on 30 Oct too, so can relate to your videos. Different people have different timelines for recovery based on their bodies etc, and its been a rollercoaster for me too, looking at my face daily, hoping for the swelling to drop and for more feeling into my upper lips etc. It can be quite daunting to compare to those who have supposedly better results at 2 weeks, but there are many others who complain of worse at 4 - 6 weeks. Sending you best wishes and space to heal, enjoy the down time

Hey girl, I had Double Jaw Surgery about 1,5 years ago now. I was definitely more swollen then most people, even 2 months postop. It's a long recovery and the key is PATIENCE. Remember that at 3 weeks your jaws are still broken! So be kind to yourself. It's so normal to get frustrated and even depressed - as it said on your note pre-op! I definitely had an identity crisis because of the swelling, I thought I hated my new face. It was around day 15 for me too, and I promise it's just swelling deceiving you. But now I'm so happy with the results, especially health and function wise. So try not to judge yourself, try to focus on resting and healing and having fun, and time will pass faster! Before you know it you will be recovered.
One of the key things that got me through recovery was support -- I had a lot from family, just like you do, but I also followed a lot of people and was in like a Jaw surgery community on Instagram. It helped a lot! Talking to people who had been through it and getting encouragements. I definitely recommend doing that, if you need any help my Jaw surgery account is @double.jws :) Don't be afraid to reach out! This is major surgery and a long recovery

Hi Shelby, I probably did my double jaw surgery approximately the same time as you and currently in my 3rd week post-op, my face is still swollen at the mid section on both sides, and my nose is also elevated by a bit because the surgeon moved my upper jaw forward. So no worries, you just have to be positive and "wait it out" :) All the best for recovery!

Some people just take longer to heal! One tip that my many orthopedic surgeons tell their patients to aid with bone healing is to take a daily carnation supplement. Everyone swears by it! My brother took it after he shattered his knee and he healed quicker than expected. Or a daily calcium/vitamin D supplement of any kind would definitely help. Either way, I feel like your swelling is going way down! Definitely headed in then right direction and I can already tell your new jaw is looking amazing 💕

Helychrisum Italicum essential oil is a miraculous oil. It reduces swelling and bruises in a flash. I've put a tiny amount after my last HA injections and was able to go out 3 hours after aplication, when my swelling usually lasts for 36hours. I'm also considering jaw surgery for my overbite and would definitely use it afterward. Hope that helps !

From the beginning to the end of the video, there's a huge difference in how clearly you can talk AND the swelling looks WAY less prominent! Don't get too down on yourself. You're making progress! Just keep taking care of yourself, drink lots of turmeric and ginger to help swelling go down, and avoid alcohol and caffeine as much as you can. You're strong and beautiful, and everything will get better!

2 years post op. Trust me when I say 2 weeks post op isn't long enough to judge your own progress.
    Other tips:
    1. Tumeric + Black pepper + Fat (Basically what an indian curry would have) for optimum absorpotion. You can google this for more informaiton.
    2. Sugar only creates more inflammation and slows healing. I hate this because I have a sweet tooth, but trust me when I say that it's true. I've learned to prefer savoury food.

Thanks for sharing your updates and being honest and open about this whole process. I am sure when the numbness and the swelling reduces a lot more you will feel happier with how your face feels and looks. A lot more healing will happen in the next few weeks. You are doing well, I admire you a lot.
Please remember you are not alone. You have a lot of people who care about you xoxo

Hey Shelby, don't be so down on your healing. Different people heal at different rates, It's normal. Your sister may heal quicker or slower than you with the same surgery, even tho you are twins. Keep your chin up, you are a beautiful young lady and an inspiration to a lot of people. I enjoy seeing you smile and have fun and can't wait to see you smile again. Plenty of rest and doggo and you'll be better before you know it :)

Hi Shelby, I had jaw surgery similar to yours when I was 19. I am now 61... yes...61. My jaw was wired shut for six weeks. I ate strained spaghetti sauce through a straw and eggnogs. We didn’t know about smoothies back then. I lost 32lbs and I still have wires that show up on xrays. I had digestive issues before surgery but after recovery they disappeared. You look great and seem to be doing great. I know it seemed like forever for the swelling to go down but it did. Once it started it went down fairly quickly. I was impatient as I had a horse and wasn’t allowed to ride her til I was recovered. I also had to carry emergency pliers with me Incase I choked or needed to vomit ad would have to clip my wires. I have them somewhere as a weird momento. Anyway I just wanted to commiserate with you as you heal. You are doing super. I wish you all the best. Try to be patient. I know it’s hard. I never regretted my surgery. I doubt you will either. It changed my looks slightly but nothing that upset me. Wishing you a quick recovery. ❤️

Shelby hang in there. You're brave to go thru the jaw surgery. Swelling has gone down a lot! Your voice is getting closer to normal. I can understand you quite easily now. You look a little different, through u looked a lot different, in the 10 days, after the surgery. Can't wait to hear you laugh again. I feel it coming in another 10-14/days. Keep leaving the apartment, it'll cheer up!

I've discovered your channel only recently, so i've only ever seen you post-op. For someone that doesn't know what you normally look like (which i'm sure you will look like again very soon! :)), you really look quite normal. It really isn't that bad! I've seen all of your post-op videos and i think you've made great progress, you just might not fully realize it bc you see your face every day but you look sooo much better! Get well soon (:

I don't know if this helps at all, I never got Jaw Surgery but I have gotten a nose job and I was swollen for so long too!! I couldn't smile for pretty much a month and a half, and honestly with the swelling I would wake up in the morning a bit swollen for about a year. There was nothing wrong with me, everyone just reacts a little differently to surgery! I even had to take these family pictures and my face was all puffy and they will live in eternity in everyone in my family's homes haha. BUT I have no regrets about it now and I get to look back at that period and those pictures and laugh because I just looked so squishy. I know it's hard but you have totally got this, and its okay to feel bummed about it. Just try and remember you will get through this, I promise there is a light at the end of the tunnel :)

okay good to know it made it difficult to smile! that's what has had me so confused, I know my upper jaw is swollen but it's weird not being able to move the area above my lip at all really!

      @rose.hallow 3 года назад +2

@@shelbychurchvlogs Yeah thats exactly where I had the problem, it was just so swollen under my nose and around my upper lip that nothing I could do could make it move anywhere. It's a super weird and frustrating feeling for sure, but you totally got this and it will go down eventually!

You're less swollen at the end of the video, you're almost there Beautiful!! You got your surgery done right in time when there's not much going on and basically everybody is cooped up most of the time lol 😂 Believe me you would've been much more depressed if everything was normal and everybody was doing their thing. You made the right decision Shelby!!

Aw Shelby I feel for you!! I didn’t have jaw surgery but I have had 2 knee reconstructions and I feel like it isn’t easy no matter what. I couldn’t walk for 2 months and I definitely recovered slower than most, it is tough comparing yourself to others and feeling like you will be stuck that way forever and it wont get better but keep pushing through, the swelling is definitely better than it was, even if it is hard for you to see that because you see yourself everyday! Everything will be okay girlie ♥️

Ice up! 45 minutes on 1 hour off when you're just chillin. Will definitely help a lot with the pain and the swelling. Also, just like every one else said, don't compare from other people. One, because everyone heals differently, and two, you don't know the difference in the extensiveness of their surgery to yours. They might be similar, but not the same. Well wishes from Canada! 🍁

A ww, Shelby. I feel for you. Remember, everyone’s jaw surgery is different, and comparison is unfair and the thief of joy. You are doing so great, and we are all proud of you! This pain is going to be worth it in the long run.

I’m having this surgery on December and I’m anxious af because at the end of January I start my last semester of Uni. Tips for the swelling that worked for me when I had my wisdom teeth out: sleep with the head elevated not flat, a jade roller (put it on the fridge and softly run it on the swelling areas), cold and hot compresses, the more you use your mouth to eat or talk is normal that gets swollen at the end of the day, think positive even tho is hard but positive thoughts are positive vibes and that helps you heal ✨ you will get through this ! (sorry for my misspelling my first language is not english)

Your doctor told you it’s completely okay for swelling to take a while to go down. Everyone has go heal in their own time. I know my skin takes a little longer to recover from a cut or scab longer than my boyfriend. You’re doing amazing and just keep it up. I love all the Oliver in the videos I love dogs!

You're so brave Shelby! Captions are nice, but not really needed as I didn't find it difficult to understand you, especially day 16 and beyond.
Also, I hope you keep/kept in mind when comparing your healing to others is that there are so many factors that affect each person's healing. I love watching your videos and hope you feel better soon!
