I first saw this cartoon in 1969, in the morning before kindergarten. Even at only 4 years of age, I remember how I could relate to the imagery in the scenes where Jot could not have fun because of the white lie he told his mother. The cartoon is still relevant today, and thanks for posting!
I remember seeing these Jot cartoons on television when I was a kid back in the 1970's. As best I remember, they used to show them on Saturday mornings and on weekday afternoons in between reruns of 60's sitcoms and cartoons.
There was this one "don't litter" Jot PSA that always used to run after "The Jetsons" Saturdays on our NBC station. "Keep God's world clean!" it ended.
Thanks for not butchering these. Some people apparently think modern audiences can't handle Jot's head melting in a psychedelic hellish landscape before he finally comes clean about his part in the cupcake heist.
Just as a note, Only a handful of Christians made this cartoon, not all of them. If Jot and other cartoons that mention Jesus, or Christians or Lord other similar religious words bother you, then please do not watch them. Please be kind to people who chose a religion. please be kind to people who chose not to have a religion as well. Thank You.
I hear a lot of people say that about children's programs from the 60s and early 70s, but it was just normal at the time, wasn't considered druggy. "Jot" actually has a pre-psychedelic aesthetic to it, more of a mid-century-modern minimalist style. To see some real psychedelic-looking children's shows from the late 60s/early 70s, check out Pufnstuf, The Banana Splits, Liddsville, the original Scooby Doo, etc. They make later shows seem dull-looking by comparison.
I don't know what made me think about Jot today but I came here immediately to see if I didn't just dream this cartoon up because no one I know seems to remember it. Good to see I'm not crazy.
Oh thank you and thank God for Jot!!! Such a cool and wonderful cartoon; this came along at the perfect crossroads of that jazzy animation/music style plus the messages were terrific. Id show these to my kids any day.
I also remember the address for Jot. I have asked several people over the years if they remembered Jot and they laughed at me and thought I was crazy when I told them the address for a cartoon I loved as a child. I have lived in Tn. all my life and I can remember getting up on cartoon Saturday at 6:00 to watch Jot and then 6:30 to watch Casper. Wonderful memories for a 37 year old.
All that coagulated psychedelic mess that was engulfing Jot always disturbed me! Hippies in Broadcasting + Religion +Children's Programming= Nightmare fuel!!
I remember seeing JOT on J.P. Patches when I was in kindergarten... there was one episode where Jot had a bad dream and that gave me nightmares until i was a pre-teen!!
We watched these at my Catholic grammar school in the early 70's. Watching it again I see there's nothing better than inflicting fear and guilt on young minds!
I watched Jot in Tennessee. Not only do I remember it, I sent off for the stuff. I got: a plastic Jot handpuppet metal pinback literature flexible 45 record with 2 bible stories
Well now I've finally seen an episode. I read an article about this show in TV guide back in the late 60"s or early 70's . it peaked my interest but since no station had picked it up in my areia (this was way before cable or satellite TV remember) I couldn't see it, Interesting, I wonder if it would have changed the person I became if I had been able to view it. Never know now. Anyway, thanks for posting!
The shorter version of this particular episode (2 minutes) leaves out a lot of the hallucinatory plot device, which causes Jot's turnaround to truth-telling to not make much sense.
This was on Captain Kangaroo when I was a child. I don't remember the biblical message. To me it was just my grandfather's work and it kept me out of mischief for an hour.
Yeah, this cartoon was on The Children's Hour in Dallas on Sunday Mornings along with Davey and Goliath. Anyone remember Bill Kelley or Cleve Lancaster?
this video is very religions and what it told about what God hates lying lips...but it told u to never to tell a lie to the Lord...and i even liked the video:)
Yes, Jot. I watched it early Saturday mornings. Another example of convoluted religious lessons used when real logic, reason, and common sense would have worked. Poor kids. These programs could have been really cool.
Your vocabulary word for today, kids: ABOMINATION! That's what lying is, and a lot of other things that I guess aren't all that bad after all if they're on a par with "haughty eyes", a "lying tongue", and "feet that are swift in running to mischief". So quit playing "smear the queer" at recess!
I actually love the style, and the moral - I mean, I'd strip the religion out of it, but it's a fine moral. I doubt you'll get too many people arguing "KIDS SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO LIE MORE". I'm even impressed that it presents a religious reason for why you shouldn't lie (because God) and an areligious reason (because guilt). ...Surprisingly easy to take away the message "excise guilt from your mind", but if you're going to take that message from it you were probably always going to take that message from it. Would make things much easier. The mother asserting that God is definitely happy now seems a trifle hubristic. I suppose that works as a "in this case, according to everything I've been taught, yes, God is happy about this". I must admit, I've always been a fan of Reverend Lovejoy's response to Flanders' question "Does God hate me?" - "Short answer, yes, with an if, long answer no... with a but."
"DISLIKE".....the McJesusLand message. Great animation style. Never heard of this guy. I could easily see this retro style getting hip again. I think I broke my hip again, k bye.
I love Jot, Too bad cartoons today are full of violence and occultic undertones. Children really need to learn the lessons taught by Jot. Afterall is it not BEST to tell the truth?

Never expected Southern Baptists to come up with something so trippy.
Well it was the 60s

And wonderful memories for a 34 year old too. Those were the good ol' days!
Cuteness with a strong message, I remember watching this as a kid. :)

I'm just here to remind you about Jot again 11 years later.
These were on Sunday mornings where I lived, adjacent to the other religious programming--I don't think they were actually on Captain Kangaroo.
Oh thank you and thank God for Jot!!! Such a cool and wonderful cartoon; this came along at the perfect crossroads of that jazzy animation/music style plus the messages were terrific. Id show these to my kids any day.

Nightmare fuel!!
This episode always makes me hungry for cupcakes.
Ahhh, Jot (the dot).
I remember this from when I was around 6 years old.
I remember seeing JOT on J.P. Patches when I was in kindergarten... there was one episode where Jot had a bad dream and that gave me nightmares until i was a pre-teen!!

Don’t steal the cupcake then atheist
I watched Jot in Tennessee. Not only do I remember it, I sent off for the stuff. I got:
a plastic Jot handpuppet
metal pinback
literature
flexible 45 record with 2 bible stories
Thanks for posting this. Great for kids.
Wooow. This cartoon is trippy,mam...uuhh,I mean,"Man."
aww good old jot, he makes learning fun and stuff :) its still kinda creepy though
It's got that UPA feel to it.
Loved Jot as a child ❤❤❤❤

This isn't a UPA film. It was made by the Roddy Keitz and Larry Herndon studio in Dallas.
havent seen this in over 20 years..i remember another one..with a kid called pik or pic in it....im sorry pic ..the music to this is awesome
This wasn't a UPA production. It says so @ the end: "Produced by Keitz & Herndon Inc., Dallas, TX." But certainly there is the influence of UPA.
I remember Jot, Davey & Goliath, even one where a man stole a calf to feed his starving family "but,...he didn't quite make it."
The shorter version of this particular episode (2 minutes) leaves out a lot of the hallucinatory plot device, which causes Jot's turnaround to truth-telling to not make much sense.
Does anyone make t-shirts with Jot? Please let me know! I am 64 now and remember him so fondly.
"Jot...Box 341...Forth Worth Texas...76116...psst...I know you'll like them...hmm hmm hmm hmmm"
Are the end credits slightly cut? I seem to remember the dot sliding from right to left across the screen and then the closing theme and credits.
Totally psychedelic cartoon with a religously moral message. I love it!
And 25 years later, Jot became Al Bundy and formed the group "No Maam."
lololol...what? That's funny! Jot's good boy though.
I don't think his mother would really want the cupcake back after it landed in the grass and possibly dog poo.
Somehow I think she does want it back no matter what shape it is in. She's funny that way.
This was on Captain Kangaroo when I was a child.
I don't remember the biblical message.
To me it was just my grandfather's work and it kept me out of mischief for an hour.
This was my childhood.
I feel like I'm watching a video from an alternate universe in which Worker and Parasite came out 75 years later.
Yeah, this cartoon was on The Children's Hour in Dallas on Sunday Mornings along with Davey and Goliath. Anyone remember Bill Kelley or Cleve Lancaster?
Jot was in the Dallas Mornign News on Sep 5, 2007. Go Jot.
(say in West Indian Accent) Feed the damn boy! He's starving!
I love jot
@thesixtiesguy Too bad Jim and Tammy didn't watch this episode more often.
YOU CANNOT GRASP THE TRUE FORM OF NOMAM'S ATTACK
this video is very religions and what it told about what God hates lying lips...but it told u to never to tell a lie to the Lord...and i even liked the video:)
Yes, Jot. I watched it early Saturday mornings. Another example of convoluted religious lessons used when real logic, reason, and common sense would have worked.
Poor kids. These programs could have been really cool.
I believe Jot and his mom are voiced by the same person; Colleen Collins, but I could be wrong.
That watch its, no be yes is the firsth Jot Short, very fort, but very valoric Short.
This is brilliant
Important lesson! Be truthful!
its good she said "god dislikes the lie" not the person who lies...this is really important.
The 70's: When even the Christian Cartoons might have been made on drugs.
Long Live Bill Kelley!!

God loves you no matter what
It's just some goddamn cup cakes. Eat em.
i love it :)
McDonalds has free apple pies!
Made by communists. I like communists and I like this cartoon.
N O M A M
Actually they didn't say you'd burn in hell, just that you'd feel bad. Its teaching lying is wrong and bad for you.
"DISLIKE".....the McJesusLand message.
Great animation style. Never heard of this guy. I could easily see this retro style getting hip again.
I think I broke my hip again, k bye.
Someone made a Khmer dub
very cute..i knew it had to do with false religion.
True religion liar. You need to reevaluate your life.
@BoruJudasDedrich It's a very cute cartoon...but it wouldn't surprise me if the guy was "on something" when he created this.

Nowdays, we need more Jot and less trash!
I love Jot, Too bad cartoons today are full of violence and occultic undertones. Children really need to learn the lessons taught by Jot. Afterall is it not BEST to tell the truth?
