I know what you mean, but i would also say that the writing for DVD and MTM was a lot more pithy and insightful, serious as well as campy. Bewitched was a lot more fluff.

Just visited the Mary Tyler Moore statue in downtown Minneapolis 2 weeks ago. Told my wife to please shoot the photo quickly, and fortunately was wearing my sunglasses, because it was quite emotional. I loved Mary and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. I was 13 in 1973 when I discovered it. The statue is back at the intersection where the iconic scene of Mary's hat toss occurred in the opening credits.
I never cried over a celebrity dying.....except Mary Tyler Moore...as if she was a relative....i totally loved her work..she brought a quality to the screen that has never before or since been duplicated...I still tear up over her passing over a year later..
I am so grateful to have stumbled across this. What a treasure. After Betty White passed away, I realized that every major cast member of the Mary Tyler Moore show was gone, and just felt so wistful - so saddened and filled with nostalgia that I started searching for anything related to Mary Tyler Moore - it was really her incredible charisma on the show that drew me in, and always brightened my spirit. Before my employment in the entertainment industry, I was front office supervisor at the Waldorf, where Ms. Moore kept an apartment in the hotel's towers. She was everything gracious and kind. I sent her flowers on the occasion of her being nominated for Ordinary People and she wrote me back a most beautiful letter. I've seen so many interviews of Ms. Moore over the years, this one is a true favorite. Well-done. Mary Tyler Moore--sorely missed.

What a fantastic interview. I absolutely adore MTM and watching this interview it's easy to see why. She was an incredibly funny actress in both the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, but when I first saw her in Ordinary People I was shocked at how amazing she was as a dramatic actor. She was stunningly good and every time I see that film I get chills. I love hearing her talk about her career and life, she is so interesting and has such a great, sparkling personality and she's so funny. She is a national treasure and the world sure could use more Mary Tyler Moores in it.
I'm only into this thing 9 minutes, but this is my favorite MTM interview ever. I see I am smiling. Mary is so thoughtful, well spoken and measured in responding to questions. Giving the interviewer a lot and then stopping politely to wait for the next one. A+

She makes admissions in this interview that she does in no other. I think the long form of the interview and the lack of an audience made her more comfortable and unguarded (that brilliant smile was her armor--note when she flashes it). She was a complex person who lived a hell of a life in eighty years. She succeeded as an actress and the co-head of the studio which bore her name--and, for a time, MTM Productions was the most powerful entity in American television. Eventually, I believed she succeeded as a person too, which makes me happy. I think she overcame all of her hardships in time and I admire her greatly for it. I have gut a feeling that she just wanted more time to do it all, and I selfishly wish she had that time as well.
Seeing her leave here at only 80, was saddening. I truly thought she had more time. She died long before several of her costars, which was even more surprising.
I have loved and admired MTM for 40 plus years. I first saw Mary Tyler Moore show in 1970 when I came the U.S. Then I saw all reruns of the Dick Van Dyke show. There is no one like her. May her soul be making comedy in heaven.

The interviewer provided the atmosphere by listening and not rushing her . Beautiful moment getting to see what makes Mary so lovable . A true Lady ! Elvis knew this. Of her and that's why he didn't hit on her . She commands respect !
Oh I'm sure Elvis probably gave it a little shot. But how could he help but have to respect Mary Tyler Moore herself- in a nuns habit, no less! 🤣 The King met his match with Mary! She was even more charming and even more in control that he was, in her way. She had untouchable integrity.
It could be that Mary was married. She was still married to Grant Tinker when she filmed "A Change of Habit". I don't think the other leading ladies he slept with, from those films, were married. I could be wrong about that them.
Such a beautiful lady, I always wished that I could smile as I speak, that is a gift in itself. She has influenced and touched many lives, and I see a lady of grace and dignity, and also a very funny person! God bless her family and anyone who reads this.

If only she knew the impact she would have on so many of us. I am in the film business today because of her and shows like hers growing up . I always wanted to know how it’ was made and today I work on set and she is right! You have to really want it because it is a tuff business. PS , I lost my baby brother to an accident the same year we lost her and it’s hard to take that loss and really makes you realize how short our lives are.

When certain big stars leave us it's almost like we've lost a member of our own family. In Mary's case this is doubly true because, as we see in this wonderful interview, she is so modest and self-effacing. Never was there a more gracious, talented and wonderful person as Mary Tyler Moore. I wish I'd come to know her. I'm sure, like most men, I'd immediately have fallen in love with her. Her soul learned many lessons and she defineteley became a deeper person. She shared all of her deepest thoughts in her book After All . We all came cold unknowingly stop knocking others who are positive . Okay Honey from a man who was ina business modeling at 50 because someone noticed me and gave me an offer .and because of this met many performers. Most were cordial but many were focusing on the acting that would appear cold . You must have irritated her with your agenda and not considering the room .

Mary makes me want to put my best self out there, not for my ego but for my heart. Doing so honors myself and it shows God that the only thing that truly feeds my heart is love.
I’ve watched this many times and each time I’m touched by her warmth and vocabulary which succinctly describes exactly what she is trying to communicate . She comes across in both her content and feeling . I love her answer to what advice would you give to an aspiring actor fir a career that may or may not happen- “ don’t do that - say that it might not happen “ be prepared . That is her core belief that tied to her earlier answer about really wanting stardom when she was young
MTM was was such a beautiful woman, and always loved her show (and her clothes!). This must be an old video though, since it seems like they put too much makeup on her beautiful face. She was a natural beauty ! 🥰
Wonderful interview in so many ways but what stood out most for me is that even though Mary was a Catholic, she wondered whether or not reincarnation was possible. Very comforting.
I remember thinking as I watched ordinary people - "Mary hooked me in her earlier work , she was just in her pleasant mode of personality acting and hiding her true self " she was so naked and bare in her portrayal of Beth jarret that I thought - this is the true Mary . After thinking about it and watching interviews such as this one Mary was being true in all of her performances . She just was a gifted actress who could channel her character and what was needed from her for a role . More was required in ordinary people - Redford knew this and she gave a masterful performance and should've won the oscar - she won the golden globe but lost out to spacek for coal miners daughter ! After this role people were stunned by her performance and couldn't see her play light roles again without supposing that Mary wasn't being true ! So unfair . I will say that coolness was always there - one never worried about Mary Richards alone in that beautiful apartment - she never showed her characters vulnerability because Mary the person wouldn't allow it much like Beth Jarret . She shows this vulnerability Here in this interview and that is why I believe her to be a great actress - it wasn't because she was cold and pleasant - she gave the characters performance as needed!
Her role in That 70s was hysterical. She was Jackie's boss at the TV station. They also had.valerie harpers as Kitty's sister and Betty White as Kitty's mom.
I agree almost totally. The one thing I would kind of disagree with is: "you never worried about Mary alone by herself in the apartment." I did a few times. Like when she was robbed. When she moved into the new apartment and her creepy neighbor invited himself in. When Ted refused to take no for an answer and wouldn't go away until she kissed him. They made that seem "cute" but it wasn't. Ted had made jokes about Spanish Fly before. Yes, Mary could handle herself, but that doesn't mean I didn't still worry about her. It's a prederatory world out there.
I had to laugh you guys being concerned for Mary Richards safety. She got that role down you actually worry for her. I think she could play the character so well because her personality is close to Mary Richards. She is such a sweetheart you want to help her lol. And I still think her role as Jackie's boss is the only bright point of the last season of that 70s show. She is just an evil b#tch. Completely the opposite of her known persona. Check it out🙂

When certain big stars leave us it's almost like we've lost a member of our own family. In Mary's case this is doubly true because, as we see in this wonderful interview, she is so modest and self-effacing. Never was there a more gracious, talented and wonderful person as Mary Tyler Moore. I wish I'd come to know her. I'm sure, like most men, I'd immediately have fallen in love with her. I miss her now, every day, not being able to feel that warm. lovely presence in my life, Thank you for sharing this candid interview.
If you had come to have known her , you would have learned that even Mary was affected by the Hollywood weirdness .

@@miles6593 after someone passes knocking a person for saying Mary was so open and wished to have met her in person is trashy. Her soul learned many lessons and she defineteley became a deeper person. She shared all of her deepest thoughts in her book After All . We all came cold unknowingly stop knocking others who are positive . Okay Honey from a man who was ina business modeling at 50 because someone noticed me and gave me an offer .and because of this met many performers. Most were cordial but many were focusing on the acting that would appear cold . You must have irritated her with your agenda and not considering the room .
This is a wonderful interview. The rapport between them is very warm and very pleasant. She and the interviewer had a wonderful time and experience.She was a beautiful woman.She was very down to earth too.No diva here!!! Carlos this is a wonderful interview. Mary makes me want to put my best self out there, not for my ego but for my heart. Doing so honors myself and it shows God that the only thing that truly feeds my heart is love.
I’ve watched this many times and each time I’m touched by her warmth and vocabulary which succinctly describes exactly what she is trying to communicate . She comes across in both her content and feeling . I love her answer to what advice would you give to an aspiring actor fir a career that may or may not happen- “ don’t do that - say that it might not happen “ be prepared . That is her core belief that tied to her earlier answer about really wanting stardom when she was young
MTM was was such a beautiful woman, and always loved her show (and her clothes!). This must be an old video though, since it seems like they put too much makeup on her beautiful face. She was a natural beauty ! 🥰

Wonderful interview in so many ways but what stood out most for me is that even though Mary was a Catholic, she wondered whether or not reincarnation was possible. Very comforting.

I remember thinking as I watched ordinary people - "Mary hooked me in her earlier work , she was just in her pleasant mode of personality acting and hiding her true self " she was so naked and bare in her portrayal of Beth jarret that I thought - this is the true Mary . After thinking about it and watching interviews such as this one Mary was being true in all of her performances . She just was a gifted actress who could channel her character and what was needed from her for a role . More was required in ordinary people - Redford knew this and she gave a masterful performance and should've won the oscar - she won the golden globe but lost out to spacek for coal miners daughter ! After this role people were stunned by her performance and couldn't see her play light roles again without supposing that Mary wasn't being true ! So unfair . I will say that coolness was always there - one never worried about Mary Richards alone in that beautiful apartment - she never showed her characters vulnerability because Mary the person wouldn't allow it much like Beth Jarret . She shows this vulnerability Here in this interview and that is why I believe her to be a great actress - it wasn't because she was cold and pleasant - she gave the characters performance as needed!

Her role in That 70s was hysterical. She was Jackie's boss at the TV station. They also had.valerie harpers as Kitty's sister and Betty White as Kitty's mom.
I agree almost totally. The one thing I would kind of disagree with is: "you never worried about Mary alone by herself in the apartment." I did a few times. Like when she was robbed. When she moved into the new apartment and her creepy neighbor invited himself in. When Ted refused to take no for an answer and wouldn't go away until she kissed him. They made that seem "cute" but it wasn't. Ted had made jokes about Spanish Fly before. Yes, Mary could handle herself, but that doesn't mean I didn't still worry about her. It's a prederatory world out there.
I had to laugh you guys being concerned for Mary Richards safety. She got that role down you actually worry for her. I think she could play the character so well because her personality is close to Mary Richards. She is such a sweetheart you want to help her lol.
And I still think her role as Jackie's boss is the only bright point of the last season of that 70s show. She is just an evil b#tch. Completely the opposite of her known persona. Check it out🙂
As great as Mary was in Ordinary People I think Sissy Spacek was too in Coal Miner’s daughter.

I think he was a sophomore in college when he actually interviewed her. He mentioned that he first "met" her at 14. But I agree, he's a great interviewer!

Thank you , I did a Public Service Announcement with her in the early 2000's , she was so kind and funny to me! Our family just adored her! It was great shooting the commercials for 2 days ! A memory our family will never ever forget !
