Purple-crowned Lorikeets (Parvipsitta porphyrocephala) are tiny, nectar- and pollen-eating parrots that are found across southern Australia. They are more often heard than seen, as fast-flying flocks race through the tree canopies in eucalyptus woodland or tall forest making their ‘tzip! tzip!’ calls. Like other parrots, Purple-crowned Lorikeets nest in tree hollows. This female Purple-crowned Lorikeet was sitting in the entrance of a nesting hollow in an old Wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) tree in the Dryandra Woodland Reserve in southern Western Australia.
