Fisherman hooks a huge stingray from the breakwater – what happens next?
Winter in southwestern Australia brings north-westerly gales. Under these conditions large fish often congregate around the Fremantle Harbour breakwaters (locally known as moles), attracting fishermen who use large fishing rods on the rocks in an attempt to catch the fish. Fishermen often leave their fishing rods unattended, with the rods placed in lengths of PVC pipe wedged in a crack in the rocks. On this day the tip of one of the parked fishing rods suddenly whipped down, with line spooling off the reel as a very large fish ran with it. Fishermen scrambled to reclaim the rod and fought the large fish - a Southern Eagle Ray (Myliobatis tenuicaudatus) for several minutes before it snappe...

Female Osprey loves bathing in the shallows to condition her feathers.

This female Australasian Osprey (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) lives on the eastern edge of Peel Inlet at Coodanup, about 60 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia. She is a successful fish predator and mother, raising three chicks last breeding season. Ospreys often bathe to clean and condition their plumage - our female spent over twenty minutes drinking and bathing in the estuary befo...
Intelligent Baboons make the most of scarce resources in drought - including seeds in elephant dung.

Chacma Baboons (Papio ursinus) are the largest non-human primates in southern Africa. They are highly gregarious, social animals that live in troops of about 15 to 100. All males of breeding age are dominant over females, but males have a strict rank order within the troop. Baboons are omnivorous, eating a wide range of plant and animal foods. This troop was on the edge of the Luvuvhu River at ...
Dead Hippo’s hide is too tough, so Vultures fight over the soft parts.

Kruger National Park in north-eastern South Africa was in severe drought in the summer of 2016. Grazing animals were badly affected, particularly Hippopotamus and African Buffaloes because there was virtually no green grass available for them. Many Hippos died of starvation, including this female in the drying Engelhard Dam. The Park was littered with the carcasses of dead animals, creating a b...

Southern Elephant Seals (Mirounga leonina) are the ocean’s largest marine mammals that is not a whale. The massive, mature males have a trunk-like proboscis, which gives the species its name, and can grow to nearly seven metres (22.5 feet) long weigh up to 5 tonnes (11,000 pounds). Elephant Seals are deep divers, staying down for about 20 minutes on a dive, hunting mainly squid as well as other...

South American Sea Lions (Otaria flavescens) have the ugliest males of any eared seal, but their females and pups are beautiful. There are several colonies of South American Sea Lions in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), comprising one or more dominant males, each with several females in his harem. This sea lion colony is at Cape Dolphin in the far north-west of East Falkland. Female Sea Lions g...
Vultures squabble and compete over the putrid carcass of a bull Elephant killed in a fight

It is rare to find an Elephant carcass in the African bush, and even more unusual near the side of a road. This bull African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) was killed in a fight with another bull. Park rangers removed the Elephant’s head and tusks, and then the scavengers moved in. The smell of the rotting carcass was overpowering! When we arrived, the Elephant carcass was swarming with ...

Feral Koi Carp - scourge of the wetlands. A cautionary environmental tale from Perth.

Koi (or Amur) Carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) are native to Asia but are unfortunately widespread in lakes on the Swan Coastal Plain, including in Herdsman Lake. They have been released into our lakes by irresponsible people who no longer want them as pets. Koi Carp disrupt the ecology of our lakes by stirring up sediments as they feed, making the water turbid, releasing methane (a potent greenhous...

I love them so much, they are so graceful. I've had two, one sadly left this world very fast, but the other one was the best partner of my life. They are beautiful inside and outside, best pet birds I could imagine of. And I had Cockatiels, Ringnecks and none of them ever gave me so much love like Regent parrot! 😭 I plan on getting one after so many years but I need to do some renovation and I'm close to it. I want this beauty to feel as good as I can imagine, so I can cuddle up to her feathers and fall asleep with her for a while, to feel peace and true love once again.
