Scratch that itch! Energetic Tawny Frogmouth chick preens and scratches while its parents doze.

Australian Tawny Frogmouths, (Podargus strigoides brevipes) - supreme masters of camouflage, are nocturnal birds related to Nightjars. They are active at night, sallying from perches to capture a wide range of invertebrate and small vertebrate prey. A trio of Frogmouths bred near the edge of Herdsman Lake this year, successfully raising one chick. Frogmouth chicks fledge early and are able to fly and hunt while still in juvenile plumage. This video shows the reddish female, grey male and their fledged chick perching together in a Flooded Gum (Eucalyptus rudis) during the day. The adults perched quietly while their energetic chick preened its feathers and scratched a big itch.
