    Over the last 20 years, Louie Simmons’ Westside Barbell has been a hotspot for advanced strength training. Several NFL and international rugby teams have adopted his training methods and receive consultation from Simmons each season. While Louie is an international icon, he has yet to work his his hometown’s college at Ohio State University. Simmons gives us some insight into his relationship with the Buckeyes and they haven’t trained together.
    In a world where just about anyone can call themselves a “trainer,” Louie Simmons reigns as the “Godfather” of strength training. As a world-class powerlifter, Louie made a name for himself breaking numerous records and innovating strength through his Eastern-bloc training methodology. His “invite-only” gym in Columbus, Ohio (Westside Barbell) has has become the mecca for elite athletes looking to become the best in the world. But behind this 1,200 square-foot room where elite athletes undergo extraordinary physical transformations lies extreme training and non-stop action with Louie Simmons guiding through it all.
    In our latest story, "State of Strength," we went to Westside Barbell and spent a morning with Louie and his guys training.

Look, there are fantastic athletes in the NFL or at OSU, but anyone with good lifting knowledge experience can find tons of players squatting and/or benching with pretty bad technique. NihilXRex No, it has not. The brain floats in the skull. Concussions occurs because of the sudden impact and/or stoppage of the head, but the brain continues and slams into the inside of the cranium. Just like if you were going 65mph in your car and it hits a wall. You keep moving into the steering wheel/windshield...etc. This is basic anatomy 101. And basic physics.

    All respect to Louie with regards to powerlifting/olympic lifting advice, but to my knowledge he hasn't played football, so he has no idea what you need in order to succeed at College Football. "Why don't they recruit marathon runners then?" Well, Louie, when you're 12 plays into a 15 yard drive it's as much about the ability to recover quickly between plays as it is about generating short bursts of power. That's why we run gassers. Yeah, you have lifters there that might out-jump someone, but how's their VO2 Max?

    • @terryjohnson3784
      @terryjohnson3784 2 года назад

      Dumbass comment. Apparently you haven’t played football either. It is a sport played very fast and explosively followed by a period of rest therefore type 2 or fast twitch muscle fibers are being used so wouldn’t it only make sense that a coach preparing a football player would focus on developing those muscle fibers instead of slow twitch. Y’all make these comments and the only thing you know about westside is big dudes lifting heavy weight. The speed days are laid out to mimic a football drive. 12 very explosive sets with 30 seconds rest in between followed by accessory work. They are not easy workouts and even the big boy powerlifters are in a lot better shape than they appear

  • @climbscience4813

    Haha. This dude is seriously annoyed that they won't let a powerlifting coach train their football players. Seriously? Beau Brandon It is, no doubt. I do know quite a bit about their system and if you watch Juggernaut training system's video about their take on westside, you will get an idea why I don't think it's optimal for everyone, even for a powerlifter. "Strength" is a very broad term and you need very specific strength in order to have it transfer to a specific sport. Don't get me wrong, I think his system is good at what it does, but I totally understand why a pro football team would use other methods.

      Drugs aren't gonna increase your vertical all too much unless you were super scrawny to begin with. They mostly improve recovery and allow you to hold more muscle. But inefficient muscle is dead weight, you won't jump higher. Training is going to have far more of an impact on vertical than steroids will.

    • @jonlanier_
      @jonlanier_ 7 лет назад

      NihilXRex Dude, the reasons steroids exist is so that you can train more and longer. They help one recover. Instead of 48 hours rest and recovery, you can train the next day. Muscle damage from workout heals over night. Depending upon the drug and amount. It can allow you to train the same muscle twice a day. More training then allows for more mucle quickly. Thus, it will increase your vertical.

They turn to him for advice & they implement a lot of his techniques and theories so he's dealing directly with their teams. He's also gotten several NFL draft prospects ready for the NFL combine over the past several years.

      Well lifting heavy increases fast twitch muscle fibers. What sprints? Fast twitch muscle fibers. It’s proven that relative to body weight an increase in the squat correlates to an increase in speed. The fastest guys in the world are also very strong. Ben Johnson would bench 405 the day of a meet to excite the central nervous system and the dude could squat 620 lbs at 175 lbs bwt

      @@terryjohnson3784 strength is definitely important! Only to a certain extent tho! Powerlifters and strongmen are super strong but not fast at all. Strength is definitely a component of speed but not the only one!!!

    • @terryjohnson3784

      It is really the most important aspect along with running mechanics. The big boys diet to be big and carry a lot of fat and a lot of the time throw conditioning to the wayside. And for twitchy sports I consider the conditioning strength training as well such as weighted sled drags running/walking hills all out sprints for a short burst etc. In my opinion anything that’s going to be more slow twitch focused such as long distance running is really a waste of time. You don’t jog during a play or your ass is on the bench. This is how Louie views s&c for any fast twitch dominant sports

    • @stonefit
      @stonefit 2 года назад

      @@terryjohnson3784 id agree with a lot of what you said. Strength is an important aspect. So are running mechanics. And the often overlooked force production is a huge aspect. Id totally disagree with your slow twitch analysis tho. Yes you dont jog around a field but if you dont have a great cardiovascular system it will be very hard to repeat those max efforts over time. Your base line cardio is a huge component to recovery and delivering oxygen to your muscles. Thanks for the reply!

    • @whoopsie890

      The strength and conditioning coaches employed by NFL are basically conditioning coaches because during the season the players are just trying to recover during the week after each game. Strength is built in the off-season where the players have their own personal coaches. It would be cool if NFL players trained with Simmons during the off-season.

    All I've gotten from this video is Hoff saying he's the strongest in the world, which is very funny, and Louie being mad that not every football team in the country wants to do his workouts. And yes, football strength coaches are coaches. They have college degrees to say so. They don't "maintain" their players, it's just that squating and benching isn't the only thing a football player does, which Louie doesn't seem to realize. A football player doesn't need to bench 600 pounds. at that point you lose flexibility and explosiveness. it's all about balance, not just strength. what a joke

      Are you not aware that some of the top sprinters in the world train at westside? And did you not hear what he said about his lifters being able to out jump the football players? He clearly understands that football is more than bench and squat.

    • @auocode
      @auocode 7 лет назад

      Yes muscle weight slows explosiveness. This is basic shit.

    • @brianthompson2684
      @brianthompson2684 7 лет назад +6

      Who are you talking to here? Who would actually believe that? Yes of course if you train like a bodybuilder you will lose explosiveness. I am currently doing a vertical jump program. I have gained muscle and I weigh more than I did when I started. Yet my vertical is 4.5 inches higher. How is this possible then? Oh yeah, because our muscles is where our explosiveness COMES FROM. So if you honestly believe that it is a rule that adding muscle means losing explosiveness, you clearly don't know the first thing about athletic training.

    • @MellonVegan
      @MellonVegan 8 лет назад

      I'm not saying he's right or wrong here in general but just about that point:
      running here means endurance, jumping means explosive strength/speed. So what he is saying is that a player won't be running for minutes at a time but they will need to accelerate a great deal in short periods of time.

    • @TheBigshot789
      @TheBigshot789 8 лет назад

      +Tobias Ommer In the NFL they don't run for long periods. They train for short bursts. If anyone runs a distance of more than the length of a football field for long periods, then you're not training right. Sprinting is explosive training too, especially since some positions start in a sprinter type stance, such as receivers.

    • @MellonVegan
      @MellonVegan 8 лет назад

      Tanner Ivester To be entirely honest with you, I have no idea about training for football. This is just what I took from the video. But if things are as you say I may have gotten it wrong. In that case I don't know what Louie meant with his statement.

Strongest gym in the world, multiple gold medalist sprinters and a plethora of pro athletes (mma fighters, football players, rugby players) have come through there. This is the godfather of powerlifting you are talking about. I agree he is scatterbrained when he talks, but who the hell cares? He gets results that are second to none.
