  • Just a little brief video about how we use our 1930's Union Rug Loom #36. It's so neat to weave on and it's so beautiful. We love our loom and her name is Rosie. We're still new to this but are enjoying the process of weaving so much! It's a perfect craft for our little homestead farm, Windhaven Farm.

This is fantastic and exactly what I want to make on my new loom. Thank you for doing this video, there is so much to learn!! I just got a tabletop loom, so will not have the luxury of the toot treadles! I think my cat will do the same thing that yours is doing...,.they get jealous of the attention given to something other than them!!!
    Thank you!

This is actually how the industrial revolution got kicked off. Back in the old days, there was a very high demand for fine cloth under garments. Yes, underwear! But as you can see here, it was a very time consuming labor intensive process. The demand for faster, more efficient looms drove builders to make higher precision machine tools to make faster and bigger looms. As the price of cloth came down, the supply went down to and it just kept feeding the demand. Thus, the beginning of the industrial age!

Thank so much! The white strings are call the warp. They are tied off in the back on the take up reel. And then on the front on the apron. Each one has to be threaded through the heddles and the reed! time consuming for sure! But neat once it's all up and running!

I have an old Union loom. The reed and shafts are 42" wide. It has a massive wooden frame and is at least five feet wide. The previous owner made rugs on it. I got it for a song and have used it to make scarves and sweaters but I have been making wool yarn in my spare time so I haven't done any weaving since the beginning of this year.

What are those white, vertical strings called, and do you have to tie/thread/'string' them in place, too?

Love this type of rug, I have 2 from my grandmother that I cherish. I would love to make rugs and table runners. Is there a way to make this type of item with a simpler loom? I have seen the other type of rag rugs but they are thick and bulky. Ideas and advice are very welcome.
