  • The Kauri Trees forest land included two dozen Australian Eucalyptus trees. These exotic trees were felled and removed to ensure all the flora is indigenous. Steve Jones Logging completed the job, taking special precautions to ensure the existing indigenous forest was not damaged. Some of the trees were located in Area 2 of the property, in which nurse trees will be planted during May 2024, so the removal of the eucalypts could not be delayed.
The nurse trees will protect 18,000 #kauri trees that will be planted from May 2025, transforming the pasture into New Zealand's largest (by tree count) contiguous #Kauri tree forest.
Most of the nurse trees will eventually get crowded out by the Kauri, but they will still perform an important role in creating greater diversity and support for a variety of fauna.
The existing indigenous forest will seamlessly blend with the Kauri.

Good to get a birdseye view. Heavy machinery vs huge trees. Spectacular Peter

The logging industry has a reputation for having cowboy operators, leaving the land looking like a moonscape. Steve Jones and his crew are no cowboys!

@@kauritrees I mostly depends on the weather, how steep the land is and how big the trees are if the land ends up looking like a moon scape at the end of the job. Those factors are beyond the control of the logging contractor

There are some Kauri trees growing at -46 degrees south (and even further south).
Preparation is the key to success. That’s why I’m planting the nurse trees before the first Kauri get planted in May 2025.
As climate change continues to warm the southern climes, the environment for Kauri will improve.
