  • Nurse trees were planted over one third of the Kauri Trees forest area in August 2023. Seven months (and one summer) later, we review the condition of the trees following attacks by goats, deer, possums and a hot summer.
Twenty-one different varieties of indigenous trees and plants were planted over 6.5 ha. It's essential that they succeed. The nurse trees will protect 20,000 #kauri trees that will be planted from May 2025, transforming the pasture into New Zealand's largest (by tree count) contiguous #Kauri tree forest.
Most of the nurse trees will eventually get crowded out by the Kauri, but they will still perform an important role in creating greater diversity and support for a variety of fauna.
The existing indigenous forest will seamlessly blend with the Kauri.

I'm pleased you enjoyed the update. I was very happy that the young trees made it through the summer.
Planting trees in the next area will be done in May 2024. In the meantime, I have a few more updates to come.
