KT013 Kauri Trees Forest | Nurse Tree Planting Part 2: Planting | August 2023

- 7,323 nurse trees are planted in the first one third of property in Taieri Beach, Otago, New Zealand. The nurse trees will protect 20,000 #kauri trees that will be planted from May 2025, transforming the pasture into New Zealand's largest (by tree count) contiguous #Kauri tree forest.
Twenty one different varieties of indigenous trees and plants were prepared by Ribbonwood Nurseries in Dunedin, based on the forest flora in the existing gullies. Consistency in flora type will result in a seamless blend between the new and existing forest areas.
Most of the nurse trees will eventually get crowded out by the Kauri, but they will still perform an important role in creating greater diversity and support for a variety of fauna.

Wow a Kauri forest in the south island! How slow do yous reckon they’ll grow down there in the cold?
Thanks for your question. I expect the Kauri trees will grow at 80% of the rate that is measured in the northern parts of the North Island. However, climate change is warming the globe, so the growth rates will improve over the next 100 years.
Spraying the grass could be killing the benifical soil microbiology. Mulch could have been an option.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Habitat Restorations are very environmentally sensitive. The process they use has been successful employed for many years. I’m confident the product used has minimal impact, with no long-term detrimental effects.
Mulch is going to be much more difficult to obtain, transport and deploy on a project this size.
Shitty music and too loud
So well done! Such great foresight.
Thanks @tend1130. The next round of planting will be done in May 2024.
