It’s a metaphor about playing the hand life deals you and not to step back and admire your success to early in life because there is time for that when you reach your goals.
as someone who has english as a second language you caught the meaning of the song quickly..life is a gamble ..you got to know what to get rid of and what to keep..and the part of the song where he said the best thing you can hope for is to die in your sleep..means you can hope to die peacefully when your time comes..and the cowboy hat looks good on you...Kenny Rogers was such a great artist back in the 80's..he recently passed away...in the last few months
Correct its a metaphor for life/and how to play the game. God deals you cards both good and bad, and How you play them effects your life. In poker you can with any kind of hand but you can also lose with any hand. "And somewhere in the darkness The gambler he broke even" he passed away he won /he did not win it was even he felt he did enough good to out way the bad. It is a great song one that I live by. Love your videos keep it up till the next one. Much good vibes from Texas.
You're right. It's a two-level meaning. On the surface, the Gambler is telling the Narrator how to play Draw Poker. Particularly in an Old West setting, where another player might gun you down if he thought you were cheating or were insulting him. But underneath that, it's advice on living life in general. The first clue is that he says "I can see you're out of aces," which is obviously metaphorical. The Narrator is discouraged, and the Gambler is trying to help him.
Marie looking good in your new cowboy hat 😍👌 🤠 and very Beautiful in that checked shirt. Great job with your reaction to the Gambler from Kenny Rogers.
You are 100% correct with the life lessons. Life is a gamble, and you need to know what to keep and know what to let go of. Its all up to YOU as to how your life will go, by keeping or letting go of THINGS/People in your life. This song was not just about playing cards. You picked up on that quicker than most. Good for you.
You got the meaning, Marie. The gambler's advice wasn't about playing poker, it was about playing Life. It's a good song! Thanks for the reaction and the conversation. And your hat is sooo great!
Great reaction, Marie! Your command of English is growing steadily. You don't miss many words, but have graduated far beyond literal word-for-word translations. You see (or hear) a string of English words, but comprehend the underlying (or hidden) meaning. That means you must be thinking in English -- not simply: hearing English, translating into French, thinking (in French) about the meaning, formulating your response, and then translating the response from French to English. Immediately, you understood that the gambler's words of wisdom are lessons in life, and not just for a card game. I think you once mentioned that you experienced a bad relationship. Using the gambler's advice and thinking back to that unpleasant time, did you "hold 'em" too long? Should you have "fold(ed) 'em" sooner? Did you "walk away" (maybe looking back and hoping he would change and the relationship would spring back to life), or did you know it was time "to run" (clean break)?
I saw you do a wonderful "confused puppy face" (tilting your head to the side and looking up to try and understand better) right after Kenny sang this line..... 3:55..... "But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep" a gambler's way of saying he got good advice, an ace being the best card, you wouldn't want to get a little 2 or 3 of hearts for advice, right? the song is another way of saying the old cliche,..... don't count your chickens until they hatch.
"You've got to know when to hold 'me, know when to fold 'em" - learn to pick your battles, which to pursue and which to let go. "Know when to walk away" - learn when to just stop what you are doing. "Know when to run" - recognize when you are in deep trouble and need to get out as fast as you can. This some great life advice whether you are gambling or doing something else completely. Nice observation on the extra meanings in the lyrics.
Exactly correct! It’s song about making your way through Life!, Kenny was an amazing Entertainer/ musician! Saw him perform this in the 1980s during a thunderstorm in Cheyenne, Wyoming!! He had many songs! He sang with Dolly Parton.! Thanks for the great reaction Cowgirl!!
Recently on NPR there was a story about a real Texas cowboy who got hired for a job in Russia to teach cattle management, since they were new at it. When he arrived on his first day on the “ ranch “ no one was around, but he could hear a weird ringing noise getting closer. His jaw must have really dropped when the Russian “cowboys” came on bicycles ringing those little handlebar bells to herd the cows !
Hey Frenchie!!!! English lesson... LOL So the word Poker, we pronounce with a "Long O"... like when you say OK... so it's pOOOker As to the song... you were absolutely correct in your thinking.. the song is using Poker to teach about life or give advice on how people should live their lives.. so the chorus which is repeated many times can be used as a motto on how to live your life. 1) "You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em" - In life you have to be able to decide when you have a good hand or a bad hand and based on that knowledge, when to keep going forward and working on things, or when to just put those cards down and move onto a different hand, where your odds of success are better. There's an old saying, "it never makes sense to throw good money after bad". This saying has the same connotation. Just because you are vested in something, it doesn't make sense to keep putting more into it, if you know, or are pretty certain, that in the end you're going to lose. Cut your losses and move onto something else. 2) "Know when to walk away and know when to run" - This line has similar implications as the previous but with one major difference, walking away and running away. So here the song is not only saying you have to know what things are good and what are bad, but when things are bad, you can just walk away, but when things are dangerous, to you, your loved ones, your life... sometimes you need to run away as quickly as you can. 3) "You never count your money, when you're sitting at the table, they'll be time enough for counting, when the dealings done" - This line is a pretty simple concept. I don't now if you've ever heard the phrase, "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" , same principle. While the game is going on, Don't be counting your money, keep your mind in the game. How much money you may or may not have at any given point doesn't really matter, as long as you are still playing. How much you have or expect to get can change from one hand to the next. You never really know how much money you have until the game is over and once the game is over, then you can count all your money. So in life, if you are into something, don't get all excited about whether you are doing good or doing bad, because it really doesn't matter until your out of whatever the game is. Anyway, that's my take on the chorus, I am sure other people might have slightly different interpretations.
Nice hat! My favorite line from this song is, "Son, I've made a life out of reading people's faces, knowing what the cards were, by the way they held their eyes."
Your hat, I can tell by the crease in the crown/top of the hat that you are wearing it right. It just looks a tad wide in the front with the brim, which is why some thought it was on backwards. You are all good to go.
Great reaction Marie! You got the meaning of the song! You look great in the hat! Now we need to get you a pair of boots! And a belt with a buckle! Then you'll be a true Cowgirl lol!
You did a great job in this review. Kenny Rogers is a great story teller and so is most older country music. I can't wait to see your HomeFree reaction to the song.
Never doubt your instincts, you are very correct. Almost every good song is a metaphor. This is about life but every song, just like every poem or story, has a message that that is different for every person. You just have to find what it really means to you personally.
anyone else caught off guard by the change in lyrics? The biggest was "staring out the window at the darkness" to "staring at the darkness at the window"
It’s about everything in life really. You have to be aware of people and opportunities. Which ones to keep and which ones to let go of and don’t worry about it
In all of life, you gotta know when to hold em, when to fold em, when to walk away & when to run. The problems come when ppl don't know when to do which. Life lessons are in everything all around us, if we have eyes to see them
I watched your reaction to "Coward f the county", and then I saw this one come up. You're doing fine with your English. It's commendable that you're brave enough to put yourself out there and not afraid to use the language. I used to teach ESL and one of the most difficult things to get across to my students was to not be afraid to speak the language that they are learning. Don't be embarrassed if you make mistakes. And I love the hat, I'm in Texas, not all of us are cowboys but that hat is a fashion statement among my fellow Texans :) Nice reaction please keep them coming. Cheers
LA LEGENDE Kenny Rogers ! Belle réaction et interprétation des paroles. Si tu veux voir une autre chanson avec Kenny et Home Free , je te conseille Children, Go Where I Sen Thee.. C'est génial de les voir chanter ensemble ! 😉
Hey Marie!! Cowboy hat looks good! I’m from Texas and while I’m not a cowboy, I do have friends that are cowboys. Also, I used to watch Walker Texas Ranger with my grandma growing up. The song is definitely a double meaning. In life, you have to know when to keep on trying (when to hold them) but also when to walk away from a bad situation (when to walk away). Loved your reactions!
Hey Marie your videos are amazing and i love to see your reactions. I love that there is so much enjoyment in your face when you react and i love when your being yourself. Also you make a very adorable and very pretty country girl in the hat. As always lots of love from a fan.
It is DEFINATELY a message of Life Lessons in the poker advice in this song. So many of Kenny Rogers songs (as well as country songs in general) have "hidden" messages in them. This is an old man telling a young man that life is about keeping true to what is important while getting rid of anything that keeps you down. So many people complicate life needlessly. The message is "keep it simple".
You are correct when you said it has other meaning. It is a life lesson about know about knowing who to listen to and who to avoid. Which advice to take and what to ignore.
Ah! The Return Of The Cowboy Hat, with Special Guest Appearance by The Packs Of Cards. Hooray! You need to make it into a Trilogy, or even a long-running series. Just to encourage you, (I hope), I have a very similar looking black cowboy hat and every time you wear your hat, I promise to wear mine while watching your videos. Wasn't that Kenny Rogers version great? I think that is the definitive interpretation of that song. Kenny really was a master at getting the best out of any song. Not only that, but his stage shows were among the best I have ever seen. His inter-song chat was so funny and entertaining.
I've thought this song was talking about life: the chances you take and the people you meet, knowing when to walk away and knowing when to run.you keep getting better and better at this dear.stay safe, stay strong.
I can confirm there are a lot of cowboys in Texas. But most of them are imported from all over America and sent to Dallas, TX for worldwide entertainment purposes. Great reaction Marie, country music is full of great storytelling. 👍 Your genuine enthusiasm with new music is refreshing in these days of doom and gloom. Fun fact : Pentatonix and Willie Nelson are also from Texas.
If you can find "The Gambler" movie series. Kenny Rogers is the lead in the movies and there are plenty of life lessons in the song and movies. It's a 5 movie series starting in the 1980's and goes into the early 90's. Ohh and the reason you keep getting messed with by youtube is you need to pause the video you are watching 2-3 times while watching and comment about it. That should stop happening if you do that.
The hat looks good; the other shirt you wore with it (the black/gray/white plaid shirt) was absolutely *perfect* with it! If you watch lots of Country music videos, and watch to see what shirts are worn by those wearing a cowboy hat ... that'll help you figure out the best kinds. Good reactions to *both* 'Gambler' music videos! You definitely picked-up on the 'extra meaning' of the song ... life (and the various parts of it) is one big gamble, so it's good to learn lessons from The Gambler. Almost every American learns some form of poker at some point in life - there are *so* many different poker games! I learned "Five Card Draw", the basic game. Right now, "Texas Hold 'Em" is one of the most popular versions. Amongst my relatives, the game almost *everybody* learns is "Cribbage". Are you familiar with Cribbage? I *really* like it, although I'm just so-so at playing it! What card game is the most popular/common in France?
The best songs tend to have meaning that is open to interpretation. Life can be thought of as one big gamble and the choices we make will, ultimately, determine the path we take. Knowing when to change the direction we are going in or wether to stay on that path is not easy. You changed the path you were on and, as I understand, you are far more happy 😊. Side note - poker - the 'o' sounds like the 'o' in no. Like your hat, stay safe ☺
Now you are ready for Kenny Rogers with Home Free: "Children, Go Where I Send Thee". (Just in case you aren't familiar, "Thee" is old English for "You".)
"Thee" is Early Modern English. It was English from the time of Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare. The English used in the King James Version of the Bible. Old English is basically Anglo-Saxon. Beowulf is written in Old English. JRR Tolkien created a widely used translation into modern English.
Dinodas Bunce and Michael Scheele --- Seriously guys? I wasn't trying to educate Marie on the periods of the English language. I just wanted her to know (in case she didn't) that "Thee" meant "you". -- simple as that --- don't take the air out of the balloon. Thank you for your input --- but your argument is for a different question.
@@tishrami1274 I am sorry if I upset you. I am an anthropologist and a part of anthropology is Linguistic anthropology. When I read your comment my brain immediately said "teaching moment". I saw this as a good thing, an opportunity to teach people something they may not know. I can see and understand that in this particular situation that I was wrong. So again, I humbly apologize.
@@dinodasbunce6224 Thank you for the apology, but it was not necessary. I appreciate your enthusiasm for your field and the info did not upset me --- in fact it got me researching on Google about the periods of the English language -- thank you for that. I just thought that dueling comments might take my comment to a place I didn't intend. After all, don't we just want to feel light and happy when Marie reacts. Stay safe, Dinodas.
Coward of the County is one of my favorites by Kenny Rogers. If you haven't done it yet, I'd check it out. It is another Ballad with a great message behind it.
Dear Marie, like I said before you can call it a Cowgirl hat. The same goes for if you get a pair of boots. They can be called Cowgirl boots instead of Cowboy hat or boots. The message of the song is to watch what the other players do to help know what they have. For example, if a player looks up every time he has a very good poker hand and looks down every time he has a bad hand or just folds before the hand is finished then he will probably always do the same so if you see him look up he probably has a strong hand but if he looks down it is probably a weak poker hand.
Great reaction. For your next Kenny Rogers reaction, perhaps Coward of the County, We've Got Tonight ( duet with Sheena Easton ), or Islands in the Stream ( duet with Dolly Parton ).
don't know if you can find it over there but you need someone who can reshape the brim of that hat the way, you can use STeam, so if you have a tea kettle or something it softens the brim where you can shape it .
Ode to Billie Joe. (Right spelling might help you select a version.) This is a great song and story. Just be warned that people have argued over the meaning since the song came out.
Some other great Kenny Rogers ballads - Coward of the County - Lucille (I was actually living in Africa when this song came out, and it was amazing how so many people there were singing it.) - If you Want To Find Love
Just an example of how iconic this song was for Kenny Rogers: In the 1990s and 2000s, there was a Major League Baseball pitcher named Kenny Rogers, who was no relation to the singer. He had a good career -- 20 years in the major leagues with 6 different teams -- but because his name was Kenny Rogers, everybody in baseball always called him The Gambler.
Song also speaks to our love affair with train travel - was a big part of American history and development of the American West. Home Free has a cute Neon Cowgirl tee- shirt 👚 pink too. II think you need one!
So in Poker, you 'ante" to participate in a "hand" of the game. You get cards, and you have a chance to Keep cards "hold em" or discard cards - based on the values of the card. the players bet on their hands, and before the betting you can "fold" - which is to leave the hand I (and forfeiting any money you had in) there are many versions of the game poker.
i do believe there is an actual music video for this song by him. also, it turned into a 3 or 4 part western mini series that is actually quite enjoyable. you will hear this advice at just about any poker table as trash talk and in just in general everyday life.
You’re right. There is a life lesson there, but if you look into poker, and how it’s played, you will understand the song a lot better. That being said , I always love your reactions. 😎😎👍👍👏👏
The gambler saw he was in a low point in his life, so he used card playing as a metaphor, for advice. Know when to hold or fold them. He was pretty much telling him it was time to walk away from what was troubling him.
One Kenny Rogers song you might want to check out is "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)". It's an older song from when he was with a group called The First Edition. Many people consider it to be "Psychedelic Rock" because it seems to describe a drug induced hallucination. Also, many people don't realize that Kenny Rogers is the one singing it.
Bonjoir! If you want to take a deep dive into the western music genre give El Paso by Marty Robbins a listen. Great story telling and a fantastic voice. Don't forget to wear the hat.
Salut Marie Comment Ca Va? So doing "Children Go, Where I send thee" with home Free is one. Other great songs to react are the ones with Dolly Parton, Who by the way just released another Christmas album. The Island in the Stream is a particular favorite, plus The greatest gift of all is another one of mine.
Hi Marie! You're right about the double meaning; he's using gambling as a metaphor for life. ♠️❤️♣️♦️
And when the old Gambler died in his sleep, he broke even.
It’s a metaphor about playing the hand life deals you and not to step back and admire your success to early in life because there is time for that when you reach your goals.
How you manage to react to these songs in a foreign language is amazing to me. Every time i watch you, that impresses me.

His poker metaphor could apply to anything in life from poker itself to relationships and jobs.
Thanks for your videos! I love hearing your comments. You really sound down to earth and very sensible and make me smile. :-)
You are right, it’s about life, knowing when to move forward, know when to back up (fold the cards), you understood it perfectly.
You're right. It's a two-level meaning. On the surface, the Gambler is telling the Narrator how to play Draw Poker. Particularly in an Old West setting, where another player might gun you down if he thought you were cheating or were insulting him.

You picked up on that quicker than most. the song is another way of saying the old cliche,..... don't count your chickens until they hatch.

You are a very beauriful Cowgirl !!! The hat looks great on you !!! Great reaction sweetheart !!
This is a great way to learn another language and the idioms of the culture.
I love you reactions, keep them up. We have cowboys just about every where in the west of the U S A. Texas has its fair share.
Recently on NPR there was a story about a real Texas cowboy who got hired for a job in Russia to teach cattle management, since they were new at it. hahahahaha, the cowgirl hat. love it. kenny is amazing R. I.P. Kenny
Hey Frenchie!!!!
English lesson... LOL So the word Poker, we pronounce with a "Long O"... like when you say OK... so it's pOOOker
As to the song... you were absolutely correct in your thinking.. the song is using Poker to teach about life or give advice on how people should live their lives.. so the chorus which is repeated many times can be used as a motto on how to live your life.
The hat is a little large for her. It should fit just a little snugly to help prevent it from being blown off the head in a breeze.
Picking, you've got to Denver the hat was sent from a subscriber from Great Britain.
You did great with your reaction. You can apply this song to the game of life. Stay safe.
Love the cowboy hat Marie! Have a great day!
My first concert was Kenny Rogers, 1977 I was years old, nice reaction.

I had the honour to meet Kenny Rogers in the early 70s, here in New Zealand, I'll never forget how "down to earth" he was.
Looking good in your new hat ! I use mine in rainy weather sometimes. When they get wet you can make them form to the shape of your head better.
Like your hat friend..love from Texas .

Kenny Rogers dippin in the middle of a world pandemic is the most "know when to fold'em" thing ever.
Love the hat on you, so cute

I can confirm there are a lot of cowboys in Texas. But most of them are imported from all over America and sent to Dallas, TX for worldwide entertainment purposes. Great reaction Marie, country music is full of great storytelling. 👍 Your genuine enthusiasm with new music is refreshing in these days of doom and gloom. Fun fact : Pentatonix and Willie Nelson are also from Texas.
Another Set of Solid Kenny Roger's Song Are "The Greatest" and "Slow Dance More". One is Uplifting and the Other an Incredibly Useful Message.
You are right. This song is not about poker at all. It's about LIFE.
Good version and good rthythm ...
Oh that's a good question 🤔 maybe belote?
The best songs tend to have meaning that is open to interpretation. Life can be thought of as one big gamble and the choices we make will, ultimately, determine the path we take. Knowing when to change the direction we are going in or wether to stay on that path is not easy. You changed the path you were on and, as I understand, you are far more happy 😊.
Side note - poker - the 'o' sounds like the 'o' in no. Like your hat, stay safe ☺
Country music, love it! The song is great, like many other country songs. "Stories in Songs", "Songs with Meaning", yeah, that's exactly what I like.
its about dealing with the obstacles in life and how to win success
Now you are ready for Kenny Rogers with Home Free: "Children, Go Where I Send Thee". (Just in case you aren't familiar, "Thee" is old English for "You".)
Sorry, thee is neither old English nor middle English, it is archaic English.
Stay safe, Dinodas.
ive loved this song since i was kid and found my parents album of his. the "Silver Album".
GO0O0O0O0D MORNING ANGEL EYE'S. GREAT REACTION, NICE HAT CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU RIDING DOWN A DIRT ROAD ON A HORSE HERE IN AMERICA! KEEP SMILING MARIE
Coward of the County is one of my favorites by Kenny Rogers. If you haven't done it yet, I'd check it out. It is another Ballad with a great message behind it.
Nice hat. Looking good cowgirl 👍👍👍👍👍👍 like song
Kenny Rogers was country music personified at one time.
Kenny Another Legend who will be missed ( RIP)
Here is a story song For you
MISS Bobby Gentry ( Old to Bill Joe)
Yes yes, please do, it one of my favorites. I think you would enjoy this song very much!👍🏼👌🏼😎
Ode to Billie Joe. (Right spelling might help you select a version.) This is a great song and story. Just be warned that people have argued over the meaning since the song came out.
@@lefty3141591 yep Right spelling helps
that can happen before that 1 st cup of coffee. ( Nice catch)
There are ranches in all 50 states. I learned to play poker, around the age of 10. So, almost 46 years ago.
1:30 same girl
Some other great Kenny Rogers ballads
- Coward of the County
- Lucille (I was actually living in Africa when this song came out, and it was amazing how so many people there were singing it.)
- If you Want To Find Love
Just an example of how iconic this song was for Kenny Rogers: In the 1990s and 2000s, there was a Major League Baseball pitcher named Kenny Rogers, who was no relation to the singer. He had a good career -- 20 years in the major leagues with 6 different teams -- but because his name was Kenny Rogers, everybody in baseball always called him The Gambler.
the songs is talking cards.. but it's not about cards. It's about life.
Now you have to react to Shania Twain live in Chicago!!!🦋🌺🇫🇷
Song also speaks to our love affair with train travel - was a big part of American history and development of the American West. Home Free has a cute Neon Cowgirl tee- shirt 👚 pink too. II think you need one!
So in Poker, you 'ante" to participate in a "hand" of the game. You get cards, and you have a chance to Keep cards "hold em" or discard cards - based on the values of the card. the players bet on their hands, and before the betting you can "fold" - which is to leave the hand I (and forfeiting any money you had in) there are many versions of the game poker.
Bonjour Marie je suis ton programme musicale 🎶 j'adore tes commentaires bises de Paris
We have the same word for poker in english, french and german, but we pronounce it differently.
i do believe there is an actual music video for this song by him. also, it turned into a 3 or 4 part western mini series that is actually quite enjoyable. you will hear this advice at just about any poker table as trash talk and in just in general everyday life.
You’re right. There is a life lesson there, but if you look into poker, and how it’s played, you will understand the song a lot better. That being said , I always love your reactions. 😎😎👍👍👏👏
You might want to watch Kenny Rogers sing Lady, it was written by Lionel Richie for him... I think you will like it
Ask, and ye shall receive! (posted 9/5) -- ruclips.net/video/jiyOKZhwNbw/видео.html
willo294 she did react to it.
@@Wellch Thanks I'll have to watch that
The hat looks great on you, Marie 🙂
The gambler saw he was in a low point in his life, so he used card playing as a metaphor, for advice. Know when to hold or fold them. He was pretty much telling him it was time to walk away from what was troubling him.
Not everyone can wear a cowboy hat...but you wear it well. VERY well!
It’s about one’s approach to life, is correct. You’re very perceptive.
I know its weird but My wife and I went to a Kenny Rogers concert in 92, the only concert I,ve ever been to and I,m 72.
KENNY !!!!
just goes to show you how good Home Free really is to convey the feeling of music without music
RIP Kenny Rogers :(.
Try "Coward of the County" by Kenny Rogers. Another great song from his many great songs :)
For another different version of the song try the muppet show (ruclips.net/video/kNnrTNFWcsg/видео.html).
Was never much of a country fan. But for some reason I liked Kenny.
Many lessons beautiful woman
