Denzel Washington was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Rubin Carter. The movie is called The Hurricane.

Dylan visited Carter in prison on December 7, 1975 and the next day raised over $100,000 for Carter's defense at a Madison Square Garden concert with his Rolling Thunder Revue, which featured Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Roberta Flack. After they broke up in 1976 Dylan never preformed this song live again. Co written with Jacques Levy who also co-wrote most of the 'Desire' album. They took a lot of liberties with the lyrics, including most of the dialogue, which was necessary to make the song scan. Great tune.

"He ain't no Gentleman Jim" refers to 19th Century boxer James J. Corbett, who was given that nickname because he was much different from most boxers of his time, being educated and having a strong sense of fair play in the ring.

This was a rebel call for people of the public to see what had been done. Rubin Carter ~ 'The Hurricane' was a middleweight boxer that was doing very well, until he stepped into that bar in N.J. ~ Things went downhill from there. He spent 20 years in jail for something he did not do. This is Bob Dylan shouting out about the injustice of this act. Rubin was hero in many ways. This song does bring enlightenment to so many. Thank you for sharing this! =)

As Canadians you will be surprised and impressed to know 2 Canadian Law Students in Toronto took up Rubin Carters case post incarceration, as a PHD Doctorate, and after investigating the details and passing their Bar Exam they took up his case for real, and got him freed based on the false testimonies etc.
Yes, I read about that as a grown man but as a young boy I heard this song in the early eighties and just assumed that they let Carter out after this song. I figured someone must have gone back and opened the case, Dylan made a compelling defense that I could even understand at that age and made it all rhyme so surely it must have been sorted out by the time I first heard the song.
Nope it decades later he was released by the efforts the good attorneys from Canada.
Always loved this song. Anything from 'Blood On The Tracks' or 'Desire'. Black Diamond Bay is a personal favourite of mine for its rhythm and quirky lyrics.

It was a story of the time. The story was controversial, but Bob's lyrics and language were very much "the words of the time", meaning common speech.
Yes, this song made a huge difference to Rubin's eventual future. Events and conviction were 1967, with Bob's song 1975, following a 1974 -76 retrial, when it was in the news, and the song on the radio, and I was a teenage Dylan fan. Rubin was eventually released in 1985 and moved to Canada. He could have been Champion of the World!

Bob raging here and It gives me the chills everytime, the way he tells the outrageous story of Rubin Carter, unfiltered, crude... the best Dylan song to my taste, he never made it like this again, I don't recall him being this mad and pissed off afterwards, but I'm not a Dylan expert.
Also, to reflect partially Bob's rage here, there's this line "he ain't no gentleman Jim" who is a boxing reference to James Corbett, one of the most notorious heavyweights ever and a well-known racist who lost his title against Jack Johnson, the first black boxer champion of the world.

This song is fire, as is the whole album (IMO). Kudos to Dylan for shedding light on the situation that eventually helped Rubin Carter get a retrial which led to his eventual exoneration.

Rubin ended up moving to Toronto and becoming a Canadian citizen after he was released. In 1996, he was mistakenly arrested by Toronto police who had supposedly sold drugs to an undercover officer, but was released after the mistake was realized.
I believe he became an attorney in Vancouver!

I didn't give Bob Dylan a chance because I wasn't keen on his voice. But, I realize now that I missed out on some great songs. I also had no idea until a few years ago just how many songs of his were covered by other artists (hundreds of songs!!!). Case in point, Knocking on Heaven's Door - i had no idea that Guns and Roses were singing Dylan's song.

Dylan, truly believed Carter was wrongly accused and jailed for a murder he didn't commit.
In 1974, Bello and Bradley withdrew their identifications of Carter and Artis, and these recantations were used as the basis for a motion for a new trial. Judge Samuel Larner denied the motion on December 11, saying they "lacked the ring of truth".
Despite Larner's ruling, Madison Avenue advertising executive George Lois organized a campaign on Carter's behalf, increasing public support for a retrial or pardon. Boxer Muhammad Ali lent his support to the campaign (including publicly wishing Carter good luck on his appeal during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in September 1973). Bob Dylan co-wrote (with Jacques Levy) and performed a song called "Hurricane" (1975), which declared that Carter was innocent. On December 7, 1975, Dylan performed the song at a concert at Trenton State Prison, where Carter was temporarily an inmate.
In 1985, Carter's attorneys filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in federal court. Later that year, Judge H. Lee Sarokin of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey granted the writ, noting that the prosecution had been "predicated upon an appeal to racism rather than reason, and concealment rather than disclosure", and set aside the convictions. Carter, 48 years old, was freed without bail in November 1985.
Carter lived in Toronto, Ontario, where he became a Canadian citizen, and was executive director of the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC) from 1993 until 2005. Carter resigned when the AIDWYC declined to support Carter's protest of the appointment to a judgeship of Susan MacLean, who was the prosecutor of Canadian Guy Paul Morin, who served over eighteen years in prison for rape and murder until exonerated by DNA evidence.
The Hurricane died in Toronto from Cancer on April 20, 2014 (aged 76) a free man..

Hey, guys! I’ve followed you for quite some time, and always enjoy the way that you react! But I must say that this is now my absolute favorite!! This Dylan song has been one of the BEST for years! Being such a sad situation that he passionately wrote and sang about really gripped me the first time that I heard it! It’s an actual masterpiece depicting a true story! It was made into a movie in 1993 entitled, “The Hurricane” in which Denzel Washington portrayed Rubin “Hurricane” Carter! Keep those awesome reactions coming!!

Historical note -- the "he ain't no Gentleman Jim" is a reference to Gentleman Jim Corbett, a famous boxer more than 100 years ago, considered a pioneer in developing boxing techniques.
In terms of Carter, yes it was 60 years ago, but circumstances are not as different now as we'd like to think.

Rubin spent the rest of his life helping others who had been wrongly jailed by forming a non-profit organization to rally to those causes. He was an articulate and gifted man. A horrible injustice to be sure. And a great tune by Thee master lyricist.
Bob debuted as a folk singer, with his great songs Blowing in the Wind, The Times They Are a-Changin' and A Hard Rain's a'Gonna Fall. Probably the most accessible Bob Dylan song is Subterranean Homesick Blues (video with the flash cards). Another favorite of mine is the studio version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door.

Like a Rolling Stone from the electric era Dylan 1965 has been consistently voted his masterpiece . ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ 1963 from the acoustic era (it's chilling!)
Whomever is giving you suggestions, doesn't seem to clued in on early Dylan. Given current events Masters of War from 1963 is more than relevant.
Another song about someone falsely accused of murder was the song "Wheat Kings and Pretty Things" about David Milgard, who was accused of murder in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Saskatoon is called the Paris of the Praries. It is actually beautiful

"Isis" and "Hurricane" are both from the album, Desire, a highpoint in his career in my view.
"Patty Valentine" ended up suing Dylan for invasion of privacy but it was more of a money grab for the royalties he earned from the song. She dragged out the case for seven years despite never actually winning in the courtroom.

Great video. A+ Dylan is my favorite musical artist. My favorite song is his "Like A Rolling Stone" which is a lesson in humility for us all. For those new to Bob, I'd recommend "Tangled Up In Blue" as a good example of his storytelling prowess.

@joeblow9374 Anybody with half a brain cell could see how racially biased the case was, The police 2 witness did a did a deal to keep themselves out of jail for the start, Multiple witnesses put Carter and Artists no where near a crime scene, ok the film Made more of his military career and less of his past criminal record, I did a little bit of research into this Willie Marins who Survived actually told the police it wasn't them plus Hazal Tanis who later died also said it wasn't the 2 men Carter and Artist so for me both men Innocent, it was the 60s And the police were racist as fuck.
Hurricane and Isis were on the same album Desire. I suggest a visit to Tangled Up in Blue from the album Blood on the Tracks. I also am fond of Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again --- that song has been an earworm living in my brain for years.

Denzel won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. So get your dark chocolate and popcorn with ghee and have a pleasurable evening.
Yes, GREAT Dylan tune I'm no huge Bob fan, but on this one, he's the man. As a musician of some 40 years, I've got to give a shout-out to Rob Stoner (there's a great 60s musician name) on that driving bass and Scarlet Rivera on that swirling violin, the two instruments adding to the fire of those incendiary lyrics and vocal punch. Great stuff.
The album, "Desire" is easily his best album, in my opinion. In fact, it is must have. I have most of Dylan's hits in my playlist but i've got the whole of the album, Desire on it. Isis was also off Desire. Check out "Sara"...the lyrics are beautiful, or "One more cup of coffee".
Great reaction to a great song - statement, really. Dylan's songs tell the stories of our lives. Carter was eventually freed but, unfortunately, he couldn't be "given back the time" he'd done. As my favorite artist since the early 70s, there are so many of his songs that challenge us to open our eyes and really see what's going on. You should check out "Only a Pawn in Their Game" a song he performed at a march with MLK, Jr. and, of course, Masters of War - absolutely amazing! One of the most powerful voices against the wrongs of our society.

This was a really nice reaction from you guys. Very good interpretations and touching on all points. The rhyming is crazy good, right. Such beautiful prosetry. As far as I know he read the book met the guy in jail and told the story pretty faithfully. Which is what makes the whole thing rhyming even more incredible. Rubin Carter wasn't released right away after the album was within 10 or so years he did get the case thrown out and the Dylan song was a large part of the reason why so much attention was brought to his case.
Dylan takes quite a few liberties with the facts in the case. There's several web sites that lay out the actual facts.
Carter was never the #1 contender. He'd reached #3 two years prior to the murder but he'd lost almost half of his last 15 fights at the time of the killing. His career was pretty much done.
Witnesses identified a set a very distinct tail lights on the white getaway car. That description matched Carter's vehicle.
Carter and John Artis were arrested less than 3 miles from the murder scene, not "Far away in another part of town" as Dylan sings.
Nobody seems to know what the "Ruben's in South America fighting for his name" line means. Carter never fought in South America.
Dylan's line about "Ruben could take a man out with just one punch, but he never liked to talk about it all that much" isn't accurate. Carter was known to brag about his fighting and often claimed that he'd once knocked out a horse.
Carter had a very violent past including prison time. While out on bail for the triple murder, he was arrested for assaulting a woman who was working to free him.
Carter's original verdict was thrown out and he received a 2nd trial where he was again convicted. It was not an all white jury in the 2nd trial.
The flip side is that racial bias played a role in the conviction of Carter and Artis. They didn't get a fair trial but the matter of their innocence isn't so simple. Ultimately, Carter was released due to the fact that he didn't get a fair trial, his guilt or innocence wasn't a factor.
There was evidence against Carter and Artis, so we'll likely never know for sure if they really did it or not. It certainly wasn't as one-sided as Dylan's Hurricane made it out to be.
Hurricane is a great song which is why so many people tend to take it as fact.
