There’s been some big copyright issues with the video, meaning the reaction segment had to be majorly trimmed down, So I've made the Uncensored version of this video free and public: www.patreon.com/posts/civil-war-105525855

I feel like the folks who wanted this movie to be political, would either love the film because it supports their world view, or hate it because it doesn't. But this movie was never about left or right, but about an authoritarian figure gaining power and turning people against people.

About the only thing they made clear was the government were the "bad guys". The president is implied to have become a dictator.

This movie is shot beautifully. I actually really liked it, but I get why people felt the characters were flat. The focus wasn't really on character growth like most movies, it was on the desolation and destruction and atomization of society. So the characters were sort of an afterthought to the setting, in my opinion. I also felt the writers did a good job of including subtle nods to US culture, like when they show the Boog Boys in Hawaiian shirts, and the presumably LGBTQ+ sniper team (just based on the rainbow paint and nails). They also talk about a Maoist militia in Portland. Really interesting movie.

the colors on the sniper are marks for their allies since everyone is wearing the same uniforms in America its a way to distinguish each other

I actually liked this movie much more than I was expecting. I loved the photo journalism angle rather than it just being a war. I also disagree with people saying that the movie needed to take a stance on the war or whatever the case. That's just not what the movie is about, so it's unfair to judge it on that. Being dropped right into it made me feel more immersed than if we got a big backstory and explanation. I will say though, I think this was very much a movie theater experience. I saw it on big premium screen with great surround sound, and that really elevated the experience. It was extremely intense and the gunshots were the most shocking I've ever heard.
I didn't think it was perfect, almost solely due to a few choices they wrote for Jesse (walking away at the gas station, climbing into the car, standing in the middle of the corridor). Those were definitely frustrating because they were the only things that pulled me out of the movie. But otherwise, I thought it was an incredibly impactful and visceral experience.

I feel like this movie should have followed a lone journalist. Have the dialog minimal and only in those big moments when they are confronted with danger. A huge sense of isolation and uncertainty of what the end goal is would have been gripping. Ending with the bruised and bloodied journalist snapping a photo of the assassinated president, begging the question of “was it worth it”

I just watched this yesterday. Great movie. That being said, the lack of world-building is disappointing. I feel like we need another movie in the same time and world from another pov. Maybe the struggles of that tier 1 element that joined the final assault/cleared the white house

I do agree that the advertisement was misleading, but I think they were able to shape out the war correspondent journalism in an interesting light. The differing philosophies of the old and new journalism. The new glorifying and worshiping (being nostalgic) the journalist more than their contributions or "warnings" as Lee (Kirsten Dunst) put it. The old being removed and striving to remain unbiased. However, each have their flaws. One puts emphasis on the subject to the detriment of inaction when the S hits the fan. The other more interested in the ones doing reporting and taking the pictures. Both, though, are removed from the subject matter. I think there's something valuable in what people should ask of their journalists. With media and pseudo-journalism dividing countries and causing political polarizations, this film illustrates varying philosophies of war journalism while also telling of how the old make way for the new.

It’s a powerful movie. I took my dad and he was expecting a “saving private ryan” type. But he loved it, and it made him think.

For me this movie destroyed me!! I was crying thru the last 40 minutes and I think it’s a lot more about how they (specially Lee) had lost hope on journalism as a institution and a medium. Lee is so clear about this and it’s kinda juxtaposed by Jessie’s innocent and idealistic take on photojournalism. Jessie clearly went thru a journey of hitting the harsh reality of what this job entails and what her immaturity and recklessness brought upon the group. I didn’t see much of the promo material so maybe that’s why I didn’t have much expectations about the war aspect of the movie.
I definitely don’t think that it’s a perfect movie, but I think it’s good. It shows the brutality of war and humans and I think it ties really well with how photojournalists might feel distraught with showing this brutality and people still ignoring it. I definitely think that Lee death kinda is missing something about it. To me, it just made me so annoyed with Jessie as her recklessness had once again cost the live of her colleague.
I also thought it was quite interesting that you were wondering about the significance of Jessie’s B&W photos v. Lee’s colour photos. And my technical brain was just like “Clearly Lee shoots in digital so she keeps them in colour and Jessie shoots in film and because she develops her own film it’s a lot easier to develop B&W than colour” but I think you interpretation is also quite valid and works really well in a metaphorical sense!! I just loved the very different perspectives.

Texas and California in no universe would ever want to become a country together-In this movie they’re wedded to a war. That’s it.

I actually was a fan of Alex Garland as a novelist before he was a screenwriter/director. I was disappointed by Danny Boye's adaptation of Garland's "The Beach" because I found it lacking and I wish the author wrote his own screenplay, but no matter. I really loved "Ex Machina", and "Annihilation", but this, like you really pinpointed had a chance to be better than it was. Great reaction and great review! Thank you!

I was really hoping this film wasn’t political and I’m glad it was. I know I’m watching a film about a civil war but I want a break from politics for at least a few hours.

For me Civil War fell short of being a good movie, and it didn’t have anything to do with the politics. None of the characters felt like real fleshed out people to me, and some of the moments that were supposed to be momentous and important felt rushed and very flat. It just wasn’t that great. The only thing I liked about it was the use of photography - some of those moments captured in time were shocking and stunning, especially the moment of silence per snap…at least early on in the film.
I found the scene with Jesse Plemons to me the best scene in the whole film and not a single picture was taken during it.
