I love adding Karate techniques into my Muay Thai practice and using them in sparring. My gym is VERY Muay Thai, everyone there basically just does Thai style roundhouse kicks to the thighs and torso, and the occasional teep. Adding in all of these Karate kicks catches people off guard!

When I started Goju Ryu in the 90s we used to do the Jodan Keri (front straight head kick to the bridge of the nose) with the heel.
The technique was modified a decade later. We now kick with the ball of the foot as it gives range and more success in the event the opponent pulls their head back.
However, as Wonderboy correctly stated the snap is very important to make it a 'hit' and not a 'push'.
We achieve that by setting it up from the hip

I love your sensei-dad. He’s clearly a lifelong martial artist who loves his art. Oss to him! I’ve also never used the mae geri (front kick) even in traditional point-fighting competitions. Point-fighters generally move so fast and can just cut angles to totally catch opponents off guard. But this and and Lyoto Machida’s chin-snap version inspire me to train more strength and speed.

I know he's not perfect but Golly he sure looks close, I grew up in THe bronx with a sick dad, and was born missing my right hand, survived cancer and now have 2 boys and a girl, about to be 47 If God is willing and was picked on my whole life . My boys are doing great though in school, one goes to Vanderbuilt on scholarship and got possibly another on the way and my daughter all honor students. My wife is a great preschool teacher, I guess I just wonder what happened to my life, trying to find some reason to push on but I'm so tired. Sorry guys for this, Love and peace.

I've started trying to teach continuous/full-contact combinations to traditional karate students by disguising it as kata bunkai. So the maegeri -> junzuki -> gyakazuki -> junzuki combo from jion becomes the front kick -> blitz that Machida hit Jon Jones with. It's a fun way to teach and seems to appease students from a variety of backgrounds.

Great lesson! This isn't taught properly often enough, every kick can be a pushing kick to push your opponent into other strikes but every kick or knee should have snapping and pushing variations. My Seido Kai Kan instructor use to say, it was a good addition to feints and fakes and the best use of bag work, alternating pushing and snapped kicks to set the bag up for the next strike. Plus, Muay Thai guys hate when you snap kick em in the face 🤪

Guys, remember about hip movement, all the power comes from pushing that pelvis to the front while extending the leg.
If you bend to the front, youll just push yourself away. Also no mention of feet placement. You are not doing this with your legs |-- or even worse \--
You are supposed to have this type of angle of the legs /-- so you push him, not yourself.
You do that by mastering the range of the kick, if you are too far, youll fall to the front exposed, if you are too close, youll push yourself away, or fall on your back.
Just a bunch of quick tips to improve quick.

Hello Sensei Steve 'Wonder Boy' Thompson and greetings also, to your father Sensei Thompson senior. I recently stumbled upon your awesome RUclips channel, of which I am in awe. Not sure if you might have already covered this, however I was wondering what your advice or tips are, in regards to fighting a much taller opponent, when you are much shorter opponent such as myself.
For example I am 165 cms or 5'5 tall against someone who is 200 cms or 6'8 just about, obviously with an extreme long reach. So my question is how to best get passed their long range punches, especially their jabs, to close the distance, or even successfully bypassing their long range front kicks. Finally how do you get to open up the guard, of someone who protects themselves very well, when trying to punch them in the face. In other words how to trick them, to get them to open up, then successfully land a head or face punch? Greetings from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺🇲🇽🥋🦘🐨Osu!
