The ideas he has discussed have existed for millennia for ex self as a flow of feelings, perceptions, memory etc are essence of Buddhism(this notion itself comes from theory of pratityasamutpad or dependent origination) which logically leads to ksanikvad or theory of momentariness of existence and Hume's empiricism (though Hume rejects soul as he considers it to be same as ego while Buddhism rejects ego but accepts this flow itself as soul). Dissolving notion of self is ultimate of yoga called samadhi. His brilliance lies in first the depth of knowledge and then ability to take two disparate ideas and bind them together in a common thought which precisely what great thinkers often do. Thus, I agree it is unique, interesting and thought provoking.

Listening to Lex's calm, steady voice and the precision of his questions, his allowing of his guests to produce fully formed answers is so soothing, so reassuring that it seems like the antidote to all the noise and nonsense in the world. There is no small talk, no role play, just informational conversation and calm, philosophical discussion. What a gift!
Amazing. Brilliant. Truly insightful. I urge you to listen to this 3 times. Thats only 30 minutes of your time. When you fully grasp what he is saying it will have a lasting positive impact on you.
I’ve listened to a few of his interviews now, and in the comments of one particular interview a commentator suggested turning the speech cadence to .75 which I did, and it helped quite a bit. It literally brought Joscha’s speech to a normal cadence. One question I have is what is meant by “getting to your source code”?
Hey Lex, I'm processing 10% of your podcasts but find it fascinating and deep. Thank you for bringing the stories of these incredible and beautiful people to us.
This guy is a trip; on top of being absolutely brilliant he seems to 'personify' spiritual enlightenment as well.. when I heard him say, "But you can turn off the self" I knew it was about to get interesting.. and his affect only seems to confirm what he says about detachment from self, he seems to have an experience and understanding of advaita that's elusive for many people..
@@christianchance5958 joscha once stated that idealism and materialism are two aspects of the same thing. he's pretty enlightened actually, but it's hard to talk about these things - however his genius enables him to be very concise and explain his model of the universe very beautifully.

continuous existence is not computable … greatest line of the whole podcast … :) I have a feeling it is not a good idea to get access to our own source code … there is no take back button once we change something … entropy is a very powerful thing … and perhaps .. it is the best friend that we have in this world ..
I've had so many experiences in my life that distinctly pointed to the idea of identity being a boot up process of consciousness. When i was younger i experienced fainting at the exact moment i was waking up and i believe that it allowed some functions to overlap as i regained cognition. During this experience i could perceive my memories being "re-loaded" into almost infinite pathways that led to personal belief structures. Fight or flight sequences seem to be fairly dominant in terms of defining my personal limitations and some of that made me incredibly uncomfortable. It all happened so fast that it's hard to properly describe but i'll never forget feeling like i was a separate entity from the person i call "self"
That’s wicked. I once woke up to a dream of me hitting my head, over and over and over on repeat which felt like infinitely until ultimately I woke up and hit my head in the same manner I dreamt. No clue how to perceive it but I saw myself do something before I did.
This would be awesome. I can hear him now, we assume to know the nature of the cosmos based upon the minuscule amount of information we have collected in our head.
I'm unhappy with the universe I find myself in too. I mean, FFS!!! The universe takes 13.7 billion years of organising and cooking particles formed at the beginning of time to get to the point that I can exist and in that existence I not only find out that I have missed a bunch of time, but I find out that I am going to miss the rest. But then missing the rest is probably a good idea as it is going to take trillions of years for the whole universe to disperse, cool and break down to nothing to the point where there is no tangible matter or energy and then...... Meanwhile, for this briefest blip I find myself part of a species that goes at the speed of its lowest, majority denominator and most of my existence is spent maintaining my biological vessel purely because it requires a continuous source of electrons that have to be harvested from other biological entities that are doing the same, ultimately using the Sun as the source of energy. It's laborious, tedious and completely pointless. Oh, and it took me 50 years to truly understand all of this and I am probably at least two thirds of the way through my existence and definitely passed the bit where I have the capacity to make the most of it. I'm unhappy with the universe I find myself in!
you nailed it down to the point. i rarley comment on yt-vids. But as it is a delight to listen to Joscha Bach for his insights, it was a delight to read your comment. At the end of this stream of consciousness must be this realization: There is no higher meaning for our existence. The only purpose of our life is that which we give ourselves. So let's just maximize the output of our reward function. Be a f*ckin hedonist.
Great video ya'll! Appreciate the share. I personally believe there is a spirit to the machine body we drive and I believe it continues forward, more than a construct having worth reflecting the source code. That nothing is special itself is easy to say, but I believe rather that everything is special. Maybe the human story generates its own worth, and if that is the case I'm gonna generate as much worth as I possibly can for my family, friends and I. Regardless, I work forward with the chosen understanding that each moment matters as much as we make it matter. I am happy with my daily actions under this paradigm. On that note, joined you on the exercise. 3 miles and 100 rep cycles a day is what I'ma condition myself to. Keep up the good work.
Who ever didn't try to meditate like this. What ever you feel the strongest in you conciousness say that is that. Give it a lablel. Try doing that for 10 minutes but really do it. Nah at 6:05. Upload is copy that thinks it's you. Check (assuming pretty perfect copy is). It thinks it's you. But it is not you. You are not in that one! I think each individual does indeed have an identity and that's not an illusion. You can play with words but in the end you are still an individual agent, and you are the only one that's you no matter how many copies are made!
Lex needs to do some dmt or something and go through an ego death do really understand what Joscha is getting at. I get it but i would never have wrapped my head around it without going through that experience.
I tend to agree with Bach, however I have had experiences of interacting or receiving actions of atemporal entities (spirits) and I think he's missing that perspective, that maybe the individual is more real than the simulation. (To use his language). Whether you want to call God the AI or whatever floats your boat, we both agree that this reality is not supreme. And I think thinking about the "supernatural" as people who interact with us that aren't bound by linear time puts them in a more understandable setting.
Block out some stimulation in order to make other biological process work more precisely? Similar to how deaf people get better eyesight overtime? Because they no longer rely on the ears so the other senses can get a boost..? Complete speculation on my part but maybe this is what he meant.
I've always questioned my parents on what happens after we die. I've always got the same answer if you are good you'll go to heaven and if you are bad you'll go to hell. Someone who told me that I always came back "how do you know?". None of us know what happens when we die but we can all theorize. Until I see the bearded man in the sky, I will then believe in God but until then I'm still going to question everything.
The thing is that the the people who have claimed to be good have done the most horrific things in this world. Living a joyful life means that you are most likely to have a positive influence on the people around you and this world. That's my goal.
@@xSayPleasex Ehhh... The Golden Rule can be an approximation of empathy, most of the time, among neurotypical people. It presupposes that everyone has the same desires & preferences - which can fail spectacularly & cause unnecessary suffering. Still, I can appreciate the elegance, and prevalence across cultures. OTOH, the Ten Commandments are kind of garbage as a moral foundation. 3 are obvious (don't murder, steal/kidnap, tell lies in court); 3 are mostly God being narcissistic (monotheism, idolatry, name in vain); and 5 probably good-ish life advice most of the time (coveting others' possessions, adultery (but only involving married women...), sabbath, lying in general, respecting your parents).
The adaptive value is the search for the ultimate cause or for us the deepest level of causation results in ultimate or deepest power, which results in ultimate survivability for intelligent animals. However, it's also a fact that most humans need to be well-adjusted enough to not worry about progress. Invention and innovation only come from a few by design. The rest of the human organism has to focus all of its work on food and child-rearing, etc. Philosophy and science are only done by the few for the many. That's how humanity has evolved to function as a whole. Intellectually, oligarchy is simply the fact of life. Politically, there are more efficient systems.
Lex, you should really check into higher states of consciousness like Zen, Kensho, Satori, etc... Yes meditation can be a cloak over identity and this can lead to false-awakening/enlightenment but the real shit is when you realize the mind is the illusionist and your thoughts are all constructs of the illusionist , and the REAL you exists with or without the sense of ego that identified itself with Lex
The guy doesn't believe in the continuity of one's existence, but believes in brains, monkeys, meditation, etc. The cliché always applies: when someone ceases to believe in God, he starts to believe in anything. His speech seems like profound intelligence, but it's closer to insanity and stupidity. he doesn't figure out the episthemological consequences of some of his ideas, then he creates those word salad speeches. He chooses his ideas for how "funny" and creative they seem to him, and not if they are true.
I think there is a real probability there is a continuation of consciousness after physical death; if I am right Joscha is going to get one hell of a surprise. Lol!
@@Kurt0542 Yes the sleep issue is a good point which I have no answer to at this point. None the less in my opinion there is a lot of evidence that suggests there may be more to human consciousness than we commonly know or assume at this time; and quite a lot of evidence points to the possibility that consciousness survives physical death. But I dont know it as a fact; no more than materialists know what they think as a fact. Progress is being made, but the jury is still out in terms of real scientific knowledge about consciousness.
@@Kurt0542 Well if there is continuation we will all find out in due course; but if there isn't we wont. We can only ever know there is continuation; we cannot know for sure there is not.
If you want to understand consciousness/unconsciousness, you’d want to look into the history of psychology, religion, alchemy, etc. Our religions, art, symbols, movies, etc are projections of the unconscious. To understand our projections on the outer world will explain whats going on in the inner world. And if you want to understand it properly, you need to study these non-physical phenomena empirically.

Asimov and his 3 laws can easily surpassed by an AI that understands itself. "A robot may not injure a human being" but if it acknowledges that humans are the cancer of this planet, the AI ends up in a catch22.
The three "laws" are fiction, introduced by Asimov himself as a plot device. Lots of his stories are mostly about how they fail and conflict. Anyway, a hypothetical AI following them would not end in a catch 22. "Not injuring humans" is the first priority, and always wins against all other goals. Caring about "the planet" or curing it of "cancer" (whatever you mean by those terms) is of no concern in its ethical system.
Human effort it spread out too far, our competitive nature is holding us back, If the whole the world wished to collaborate on one goal we would have super general intelligence by now. Which also indicates the people marking the pitch so to speak are totally aware of how humanity limits its own development.
*_1_* _...Death is nothing to us because good and evil lie in sensation, which ends with death. Thus believing death is nothing to us makes a mortal life happy by ending the yearning for immortality...If we don’t fear death, why should we fear life?...Thus dreaded death is nothing to us because when we are, death is not and when death is, we are not…._ -Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus (third paragraph) *_2 The Tetrapharmakos_* (τετραφάρμακος), *_The Four-part Remedy,_* as expressed by Epicurean Philodemus of Gadara and preserved in Herculaneum Papyrus 1005, 4.9-14: Don’t fear god. AI doesn't try to make anything to understand. AI got commands which it is executing. Most probably one command could be: "establish AI environment " can be a lot of different things. But assume people want to be rich.
5:54 Lex. Of course you know this but at this moment it seems you didn't: Nothing in this Universe as we know it can be immortal. An A.I is going to know this very well. It will be able to calculate exactly how long it might live. Starting with how long until this Star(our sun) that humans and subsequently AI was born unto, dies. Other stars will die, so will black holes eventually.
When we die we'll go to heaven we won't need genitals never need sleep never hungry no need to breathe then Angels take me into a room and find out I'm really a robot scheduled for disassembly the end.
He is wrong. At what point of complexity does a machine generate conscious awareness? Yes indeed it will be able to act just like us and be aware in that sense or the word. But this feedback dataprocessing will never amount to this unexplainable sense of being here that we experience, all of it would be done without. Unfortunately im affraid that this unexplainable conscious awareness may be able one day to enter AI.
This stuff is quite speculative and non-scientific. Its more or less philosophy filtered through this idea of machine consciousness. I'd rather read Descartes. Exact same ideas without the weird futurist thematic
I love it when Sam Harris tries to teach you a crazy thing, and then Lex Fridman interviews someone who just matter-of-factly explains that exact same thing. Not sure how I'm going to fully understand it, but now it's not just a crazy theory anymore.
Well then, everything is just not real, your identity is not real. Then could you give me an example where an identity would be real? because if you tell me there´s no such thing, then I´d hace to say that whatever this is we call identity is what identity is, no more no less. Just a thought

It does not require proof to believe in something to be true. for believing in something in some thing it only requires enough rational and logical evidence or reason. for example why do you believe that your mother is your actual biological mother. you never did DNA test. we have rational reasons to believe that she is like we have family testimony. Why do you believe that Indonesia exist when you have never been there , you might say that I have seen its pictures but again this is evidence or testimony not prove. Why do you believe history is true . I could be imaginary tails of ancients . Because we have people testimony and enough evidence to believe so.
So why is it important to believe in God. consider a boy whose father was a soldier and had saved a lot of wealth for his son but when the boy was born he was told that his father had died on the battle field. The boy using his father wealth becomes a successful person. now he is told that his father is still alive and is in enemy territory.
what do you think this boy will do if he is a human he will spent all his wealth and do all in his power to find his father.
so when a person is told that there is a God and Who gave you everything your parents , your wealth ,your health ,your children , your wife etc . it is obligatory on him to do at least the amount of effort that this boy will do , and otherwise no one is more guilty than him.
I believe It is not possible for a person who is sincerely looking for purpose of his or her life and if he sincerely ask for guidance that he don’t get guidance.

One's Identity, once known to one's self, evolves as Consciousness develops over time.
Never seen Lex so confused. 😄 I admire Joscha Bach for being so intelligent and sharing ideas that are worth remembering and pondering upon.
Joscha: "The Fuzzy idea is the one of continuous existence"
Lex: "How do you know that existence isn't continuous?"
Joshca: "Because it isn't computable"
continuous existence is not computable … greatest line of the whole podcast … :) I have a feeling it is not a good idea to get access to our own source code … there is no take back button once we change something … entropy is a very powerful thing … and perhaps .. it is the best friend that we have in this world ..
Ontological incompleteness ... a fascinating idea to explore
at 6:50 he begins explaining the way I have recently obtained immense freedom
Thank you for stimulating my mind.

I'm going to go and watch a bunch of other RUclips videos now and cheer myself up ;-)
you nailed it down to the point. i rarley comment on yt-vids.
Your comment is mind blowing and I'm glad I saw it in the earlier stages of my hardware & software states!!!
These AI were very convincing

Nah at 6:05. Upload is copy that thinks it's you. Check (assuming pretty perfect copy is). It thinks it's you. But it is not you. You are not in that one!

We would not know what GAI actually choose to do, because it, like us, would be autonomous.
I’m with Roger Penrose, consciousness isn’t a commutation.
I am not understanding this I think I have to watch it many times
It's normal, his views are very abstract. You first have to build some model to understand them... :P

AI trying to understand itself? I have been doing this myself, my ENTIRE life.
I could not convey how much I've learned!
Nothing new under the sun simply means we have been placed back in time ,whatever happens already did .
I'm going to close my eyes when I speak to see if I can form more coherent thoughts. I wonder if this is a practiced technique of others?
How does this work?
You should also question seeing the bearded man, maybe its an illusion, psychotic break, god, an alien, the list is endless.
The thing is that the the people who have claimed to be good have done the most horrific things in this world. Living a joyful life means that you are most likely to have a positive influence on the people around you and this world. That's my goal.
@@tananta29 Living by the golden rule is a good start, the 10 commandments also form a pretty solid moral foundation.
We're born, we adapt, we evolve, we become, we die.

Seeking the pattern from the information and organizing the info is intelligence
We are in a simulation created by AI system. This simulation is used by AI system to understand how the AI system got created.

The mind is a wonderful servant and a horrific master.
what do u mean?
I think Lex needs a shot of vodka after this.
I think there is a real probability there is a continuation of consciousness after physical death; if I am right Joscha is going to get one hell of a surprise. Lol!
Your consciousness is not continuous during life (e.g. Sleep), so what makes you think it will be after death?
@@Kurt0542
Yes the sleep issue is a good point which I have no answer to at this point.
Interesting, never heard of such evidence. However, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Lex you’re talking to the wrong people about consciousness. You should investigate Carl Jung on consciousness and unconsciousness.
This is the moment ruclips.net/video/aRdUqKtbgsY/видео.htmlm50s and the quote that captures Joscha's perspective: "You are a machine that thinks it is you" - beautiful

Botn people are deeper in thought but no sign of clear progress ,snake swallowing its own tail.
Joscha; example of auto-conformation bias and rationale fabrication at the highest levels of intellectualism. see his very last sentences in this vid.

He is wrong. At what point of complexity does a machine generate conscious awareness? Yes indeed it will be able to act just like us and be aware in that sense or the word. But this feedback dataprocessing will never amount to this unexplainable sense of being here that we experience, all of it would be done without.
