"Suffering is the result of caring about things that you cannot change. If you are able to change what you care about to those things that you can change, you will not suffer." 🤯 0:06
"Happiness itself is not important. Happiness is like a cookie." 🤯 0:21
"The environment cannot make you happy, it's your appraisal of your environment that makes you happy. And if you can change your appraisal of the environment, which you can learn to, then you can create arbitrary states of happiness." 🤯 0:52
"It's very hard to sterilize a planet once it's infected with life." 🤯 2:34
"You are just an expression of the cell." 🤯 2:49
"You shift the boundaries between the ordered systems into the realm of the chaos." 🤯 4:48
"What feels most meaningful to me is to try to build and maintain a sustainable civilization." 🤯 5:05
"Is it possible that a gas giant could become intelligent, what would that involve?" 🤯 6:04
"I don't think that God has anything to do with creation. I think it's a mistranslation of the Talmud into the Catholic mythology. I think that Genesis is actually the childhood memories of a god. It's a mind that's remembering how it came into being." 🤯 7:34
"The higher being that we are part of is the civilization." 🤯 10:04

rocking in your chair is a sort of nodding with your whole body, you think? We nod with our heads to accept new information into our beings. Would a bigger nod, a whole body nod, serve the same function for bigger information? I certainly find myself pausing when I come across something new, something I need to reflect on, or play again in my head, but often I realize this information is new after i've paused it, that the mechanism for pausing is so embodied for me that it happens before i'm consciously aware the information is new. Weird stuff.

Wonderful clip. Tripped up on Bach’s intuition that abiogenesis is very unlikely, and that spontaneous intelligence creating cells as von Neumann probes and infecting planets is more likely. It seems like we don’t have any way to calculate either probability, so I’m very curious what fuels his intuition for this.

it's a nice sounding quote, but I think the sentiment is more like "happiness is _just_ a cookie your brain bakes for itself", cos cookies aren't important

I realized not too long ago that the external things I thought were making me happy were literally just me and my own actions/thoughts that which i had assumed was coming from external sources.

I was thinking about cookies 🍪 the other day. “We are just an expression of the cell.” Lex, this was fascinating! Such a unique perspective! A fantastic interview - thoroughly enjoyed this one!

To anyone who is new to Joscha, watch full talk and read his writing and follow him on Twitter. I find some of his comments on shaman rituals very skeptical but he is brilliant on so many levels. His thoughts on unstability of civilization and possible Pandemic breaking our denial was back in 2018/2019 have come alive.

"...happiness is a cookie that your brain bakes for itself..."
The throwaway deadpan effortlessness of the mid-flow delivery was so great that even on repeat viewings brings on a proper laugh and happiness...
...So maybe Josha Bach is a cookie my brain bakes for itself, or more to the point, my neural model of Josha, juxtaposed through my own model via executive function and irony feedback, is causing happiness spiking.
'Effortless Irony Edition' of Josha Bach AI plugin software masterpiece is going to be one of the most heavily pirated augmentations on the 2050 Aug black market amidst the distorted neon lead-lined back-room Tokyo surveillance loopholes.

    In pursuit of happiness
    The boy lost his way
By following what others had to say
    When grown
    The man found the unknown
    Happy isn't really real
    Just a fleeting fun feeling
    Like the one that comes
    When playing with a toy
A mirage that comes and goes on tippy toes
    An imposter masquerading as joy
    Exquisitely memorable
    Nearly ethereal
    But oh
    Ever so ephemeral
Like a rainbow's pot of gold
