  • WINTER range test with the BMW i3 94 Ah (33kWh) on motorway. The available capacity was around 28 kWh.
Temperature was around +1 degrees C (+34 F) and speed at 90 kmh (55 mph) to maximize range.
I know it is not 100% accurate since my finish point was not at the same location as the starting point, but a big part of the drive was actually heading back.

For comparison, the guesstimator on mine during winter usually starts off at 100 miles (160km) at full charge and drops to 50% charge after a 50 mile (80km) round trip to work. This is a 94 ah w/ Rex (so carrying a bit extra weight) driven pretty aggressively in comfort mode... usually cruising 75mph (120km/h).

curious about the model year of the car during the test and how far had it on the odometer(total miles the vehicle has been driven) before the test

Car was a 2014 60Ah but battery upgraded to 94Ah. The car had maybe done 120.000km and battery perhaps 40.000-50.000km. When I got the battery swapped it had probably done about 10.000km.

Hello , you had much rain and even wet snow on the road, so beleave the consumption is higher than you would see on a dry road. We also have a 94 ah
I3, and we typically get 200 km range on dry roads when driving at 80 km/h in 0 C temperature . Our I3 has driven 45000 km over 5 years and
shows 29.5 kwh battery capasty,, nearly the same as when it was new , back then we displayed 30,4 kwh !
Cudrios to know what battery capasity you see on your I3 now ?

Well the range does shift a lot with the weather conditions yes. So you are absolutely right on that. Different range for different conditions.
I don’t have the i3 anymore but when I sold it, it had around 28.5 kWh available. When the battery was installed it had just over 30 kWh available. I believe it had ~ 60.000 km on the battery and 130.000 km on the car, at this test.

I drive around 180kms round trip every day to get to work. Do you think I would make it home in the winter. I live in Canada?

    Hi Bjorn
It is a bit funny, In DK we are way behind with charger…
We was in Sommer House at the west costa and there wasn't much Juce on the battery, in this small town there was only one charger and we drove there anyway we could just leave the i3 there the knight over.
But I have forgotten to get the charge cable from the old i3 60 Ah wen I purchase the new i3 120 so now then there was even les power on the battery and it was illegal to charge at the household socket at the Sommer House.
Then came the time to go home, tried to reach a CCS charger but was missing 12 Km
I had 2 % left, I got my son to drive by and I was tow after a dinosaur car. I got som Km on the battery and drove to the DC charter on my own.
After this tow the the calculation how far I can get on the battery went haywire (of course) But it take som time to correct it self without resetting it.
But with 120 Ah I drive around 180 - 200 Km mixed driving with out driving carefully and the same wetter conditions as you just did.
It is nice to see real consumption.
    👍 for all your work.

Yeah as I remember it I think the percentage usually dropped faster the lower it got. But you’re right, it’s hard to know exactly how long the range is/will be. Lots of factors.
Interesting on the towing part, I wanted to try that but was worried I’d damage something.

@@BasinBjorn You must never tow any EV (unless driven wheels are not rotating)!
