  • The all new (well, an important bit is new) BMW i3 fitted with a larger capacity 94 amp hour, (or 33 kilowatt hour) battery is a major step in the right direction. I love this car.

    I like that you spent more time looking where you were driving rather than at the camera. Some people don't understand that concept.

    I test drove an ioniq and an i3 and the BMW definitely had the better range for me. The i3 lasts two days of commuting (130 miles) but the ioniq was well below 50% after one day. Hyundai is bigger and more practical though.
    Got an i3 now and it's fantastic. Not just good for an electric car, but the best car in its class regardless of fuel type.

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 7 лет назад +8

      no kidding. and I have a 20 Ah battery pack for recharging phones and the like with. Yet that's 74 wh, whereas this car has 94 Ah (4.7x) which equates to 33 kwh? (~446x)
      Which, incidentally means my battery pack is 3.7 volts (big surprise. Standard voltage for a single Lithium Ion cell), while that in the i3 battery pack comes in at about 351 volts?
      -shrug-
      Guess that's possible. XD

    Thank you for all the great videos, Robert!
    I too love the i3. In fact I drove one for about 9 month, but sold it last month.
    When I wanted to upgrade the 22kWh battery to the newer 33kWh battery BMW told me that the upgrade would cost slightly under 10,000Euro (and they will keep my old 22kWh battery). They than went on to try to talk me into selling my "old" i3 and just get a completely new one. Well, I sold the car - and I'm driving a Model S 60D now.
    My impression while I was driving the i3 was that they do not care as much about it as they are advertising.
    There seem to be only a few people at BMW who actually know about the BMWi cars (I went to the BMW representation in Hamburg and there's only 1 person who is actually trained to support BMWi customers).
    They do have a very good helpline, though. When my occasional use charger broke and I needed replacement, they even offered to send someone out to where I was and deliver it to me within one hour (though they could not tell me wether or not I would have to pay for it…).
    Overall: Fantastic car with not quite so fantastic service.

    I really appreciate your positive view on the BMW i3. I have driven it once in direct comparison to almost all electric competitors and it was a blast. The acceleration, the handling and the overall feel of the interior was amazing. So thank you for not only comparing the facts like battery capacity and range but pointing out that the i3 is an astonishing car.

    We got our i3 in October and the first trip I did was 132 miles. When I got home I had 6 miles of range left so I was pretty happy with the 140 guide! :) As you say over the winter it's been pretty constantly 120, but never below. We went for the range extender model as it's our only car and we have a toddler - so we had to be confident that we wouldn't be stuck at any point. We've not used it yet (other than to test that it works) so we haven't bought fuel now for more than three months!
    We test drove the big battery leaf and then this and the i3 won hands down as it's just so fun to drive!
    I agree with your thoughts about the ownership model and I do think people need to change their mindset about owning a car now. If nothing else these are so hugely complicated that the likely costs of repair are probably still largely unknown!
    In terms of costs - when you compare the top end Leaf with the i3 on a lease it doesn't make a huge difference (around £800/year increase on the leaf in our case). If you were to buy the comparable models they are almost double the cost so again it doesn't make financial sense if you were to buy one.
    Waffly waffly......One last point to say that the app for the car is brilliant........and that I too haven't yet got bored of leaving people at the lights! :D

      Hello @@silkstar20, we leased the i3 for 2 years to start with and kept adding on another year as it suited us so well. It was our only car for 4.5 years in the end and we only changed it as we needed a car with 5 seats.
      The easiest 4.5 years of driving I've ever done and the only maintenance was tyres and washer fluid.

      A lot of people who favor EVs factor long-term operating costs into their decision -- theoretically, EVs have lower fuel and maintenance costs over their lifetime. Will that actually be the case? We don't have enough data to be certain. And as technology advances ever more quickly, will it make sense to keep a current EV ten or more years when you can get one with double the range in five years? Another factor is how much it is worth it to you to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem? That's a politically-charged way of looking at it, but that's how a lot of EV and hybrid owners think.

    • @DavidKnowles0
      @DavidKnowles0 7 лет назад

      This all depends on battery prices, which are expect to fall to about 100 dollars kwh and battery deals from the car companies themselves are offering.
      If companies are buying these batteries to convert them to grid or house storage units, upgrading to new batteries could be a fair cheap.
      Of cause you won't get what will undoubtedly be lighter cars, improve electric motors and regen technologies.

    Hello!
    Could you add an on screen conversion (or similar) when you talk about miles (to km) and miles/hour (to km/h). I would be really fantastic for us that are interested in your show, but uses the metric system to measure distance and speed. I don't have the energy to look that up every time you mention a distance or a speed.
    Thanks!

      Don't worry, laddie, when you grow up you will find that there are many different systems of measurement used around the world, and it is no shame to be better at some than others, just the way it is. FWIW, 50Km/hr is city speed, 100-110 Km/hr is highway speed. A mile is about 1.6 Km. A Km is about .62 mile, so 100 miles is 160 Km, 100 Km is 62 miles. Work on it, so when you're grown up you too can be fluent in more than one system.

    Had mine for a few months now - it's the best car I've ever had, hands down. All electric, no REX fossil compromise :) Electric is awesome, I'm never going back!
    On range - you get all the info you need on the dash if you're that kind of geek; I have achieved 150 miles on a single charge 8-) although that was a little extreme (pootling steadily around 50 mph, A/C off, etc). Not the most extreme by a long way though...
    The 120 mile range is easily done, no problems there. Key factors affecting range are speed (wind resistance is proportional to the square of your speed - same for any car), and driving style - coast is king on electric. The range prediction computer is very good, can absolutely rely on it - I've been confident enough to arrive at a charging station with under 2 miles remaining.
    There's one down side at the moment compared to the Leaf; compatible DC rapid chargers (CCS) aren't as ubiquitous - in particular something like half the Ecotricity motorway stations have CCS. Town centre rapid chargers usually have both, in my experience. The Hyundai Ioniq uses CCS the same as the i3, so that might increase demand (and hence supply).

Never before had I been so happy sitting in gridlock in complete silence outside of the radio with full heating (stop-start cars can't maintain it) and have it so easy with one pedal driving.

    My local BMW dealership (Hull) didn't really want to know. Couldn't answer any questions and I'm still awaiting a call for a test drive.
    Hyundai didn't have one, didn't know when they was going to get one and didn't know which dealer did have one.
    Renault couldn't give me a test drive in one as they didn't have one in, 4 months later they still couldn't give me a test drive.
    VW didn't do the eGolf and told me they had stopped making them.
    Bought another leaf instead.
    Dealerships need a kick up the arse, Nissan has been the only one I've visited who wanted to sell electric.

      Depending upon ones location...
      Kia and Hyundai are effectively the same company. Kia does have a Soul EV. Don't judge it on looks alone; go to any dealership for a closer inspection.
      Also... One Tesla comes out with anything under 40k; it will draw all kinds of people into the market, and also make for quite the additions to variety of EV's.
      Look to have numerous models of EV's that can easily exceed some 250 miles per charge within the next five model years

      I suspect part of this is that dealerships can cut prices on IC engined cars and make their money back in servicing charges, while on full electric cars the only reason they'll see them back is for warranty work over the first 3 years (Since apart from that the wipers and washer fluid are the only consumables and they can easily be replaced at home), so no chance of making a higher overall profit on an electric car while cutting the initial sale price to pull customers in. It's pretty messed up when you have your money ready and they're not interested though.

    So an Englishman living in San Jose, CA. I just bought the 94A BEV as soon as I could. That combined with the DC charging system we have in the area makes it a perfect day vehicle. Sure we keep the volvo for long distance, but as an everyday family and commute vehicle, it does everything with style and not a little bit of BMW speed and grace. Access to the HOV lane of course is a real time saver

    There is an interesting contrast between your lovely positive review of the i3 as compared to the one on the latest Clarkson, May & Hamster program, "Grand Tour" the other night which, I have to say was rather misleading given James May was driving a 2014 i3 model and Clarkson was in a 2015 Golf GTi and for program released in Feb 2017 you'd think they'd have been a bit more up to date and switched on if you excuse the pun.
    I have gone from a Supercharged V8 Jag to a BMW Z4 and now a BMW i3 94Ah (33kwh) Range Extender in 3 maneuvers, and the reason for this is that it makes total financial sense and will allow me to complete my 90 mile round trip commute with room to spare and I won;t be spending £300+ a month on petrol anymore.
    Crack on Kryten, "Fully Charged" is an excellent program.

      I agree. In what universe did the Golf win the drag race when they were well over the national speed limit before it caught up? On a race track! some might say. Well, no, because the BMW would beat the golf to the first corner, then out of it, and so on and so on. The i3 won in my opinion.

    • @timsmith5339
      @timsmith5339 4 года назад

      As much as I love Top Gear and the Grand Tour, I hate their anti-electric car stance. In that test they did a drag race between the i3 and the golf and by any reasonable measure the BMW trounced the Golf, but the still declared it to the ICE car!!!!!

    Appreciate what you're saying about dealers not being on board with helping with EVs. When I went to a Renault dealer in Bristol to test a ZOE they were very helpful and were just what I would expect, so much so I got my ZOE from them.
    But when my parents went to a VW dealer to look at the E Golf the dealer were totally disinterested, telling them "you don't want an EV, no-one buys them", ironically then tried to promote a diesel (post-scandal) to them instead.

But the balance tipped over very quickly to the ioniq when I compared the price for a full option car and considered the bigger range. I also like the design of the ioniq more, but that is personal taste. I like your show very much. Keep up the good work.

    Excited to be getting a 2015 i3 REx. Coming from a 2014 Nissan Leaf *without* DC fast charge (which I completely love, but is slightly impractical in Texas where charging stations between cities are easy > 100mi apart.) Really don't want to have to rely on 3 hour RV park charging and "almost not making it". I like the REx because of the extra gas option when you *really* need it. Sure you're going to be stopping every 60 miles on trips between cities, but for someone who needs a longer range every once and a while it makes sense.

    I would love BMW to offer the same technology on a MINI Cooper or BMW 1. I hope the start doing that soon.
    Great video and great channel by the way.

      I agree, it wasn't especially stable when turning left or right, nor on the motorway. I had a feeling that it would tip over. The back-doors look cool, but are worthless if you are parked next to a car. Everything else was superb.

    I've got a 2015 i3. I think it is IT professionals who like these cars the most and revel in the detail. If you are a an under-educated mortal like me, you might become frustrated by the lack of range. The older battery only gives around 70 miles on a charge and it is a weird and slighly disconcerting feeling watching the miles run down. I got the range externder because I go to London regularly (around 100 mile round trip using the M1) and then don't want to be charging at services at midnight. electric cars should be hitting 200 miles minimum to compete with petrol. A German company called Lions Gate has produced a battery with BMW for the i3 that will deliver 435 miles on a charge - now that's a game changer.

      simply answer is by having the money to buy the equipment to make them look good and to hire staff to operate it all. Robert Llewellyn has a large team, for a youtube channel backing him up.

      Fals3Agent actually its just one person, me. We use consumer cameras (Panasonic GH4 & GH3) cheapish prime lenses and good quality mics (sennheiser g3 radio mics). Robert & I love making the show so we put the effort in to make it as enjoyable to watch as possible. The patreon support is crucial to pay for our time to put the show together. We're VERY grateful for any support. :)

    Well done BMW lets have some more with faster charging a la DC units and more varieties too please, your i8 is Fab too ! Also try combining a Super-Capacitor with your batteries to use soles for the charging bit and you'll reach that fab figure of actually charging to 100% in 30-45 seconds !!!!

    We just bought at used 2015 fiat 500e. Super-fun (yes that is a real scientific term according to me) and about the same range as a 2016 BMW i3 (60kw). Range is about the same (the fiat gets 87 vs i3 's 81 miles) and it cost us 13,000 cdn (about 10,000 usd). Looked at the i3 but even used the price was too high for what we wanted to spend. Looking forward to seeing more EVs on the road.

    Despite the battery upgrade not being available in the UK or US and no price yet known for the upgrade I still welcome the development. Shame Tesla has shown little interest in doing something similar other than unlocking via software the potential of a larger but hobbled battery like the 40kWh to 60kWh and the 60kWh to 75kWh (and if they ever did it would be very expensive I've no doubt). Maybe with 'right to repair' getting more interest of late there will be enough technical information available for third party shops to undertake this in a few more years with cells that should be more affordable by then.

    • @DavidKnowles0
      @DavidKnowles0 7 лет назад

      Tesla themselves probably waiting for the cells to get more affordable before offering this service. They already got a business they can sell the recovered batteries on to.

  • @DavidDeLuge

    I do a 145 mile mile a day round trip between near Chesterfield and Coventry. Until relatively recently, electric cars with that range were either non-existent or too expensive. Something like this or the Tesla Model 3 or, indeed, the Jaguar I-Pace are/will be viable and affordable options. However, the i3 isn't really for me yet because, even with a range extender, I'd need to fill up the fuel tank every day and charge the car for many hours over night to be able to do my commute the next day. This would effectively rule out going out in the evening in the car. So, for my situation, it's not quite there yet but it certainly is for many.
    Currently, I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee (yes, Robert, I know, you hate me already) and calculated that I put around £6000 of diesel a year in it, which is astronomical when you consider that only me is sat in one corner of it for most of the time. So, after having it for just one year, I have ordered a new petrol hybrid Toyota C-HR, which, although not a plug-in hybrid, will save me over £2000 a year in fuel (assuming I get a conservative circa 50mpg, which seems to be a reasonable assumption based on the official combined figure of 74) and will reduce the amount of CO2 I'm pumping out. For me, this seems like a great step towards ultimately going to either a hydrogen or plug-in electric vehicle for the next vehicle.
    If I keep the Toyota for three years, I think both hydrogen and battery technology will have progressed to the point where the current charge times and range will become a non-issue.
    Great channel, Robert. Loving your work...

    And for those wondering, Drive-Now(.com) have a bunch of i3s in Denmark, Sweden, London and other places. It's a car-sharing service that doesn't have a monthly fee (at least in Denmark). The i3s really are quite enjoyable to drive. Could use a nose job, though. But that's just personal opinion :)

    Ah is only giving the amount of charge like saying 20 liters of water, while kWh is energy which depends on voltage or on the height at which this water is stored.
    Also power (kW) is another factor which depends on current or flowrate of water in the pipe; that tells us how good the battery is.

  • @kevfquinn
    @kevfquinn 4 года назад

    This popped up again in my recommendations for some reason - interesting to note and as hinted may be the case later in the video, BMW in the UK simply never offered the battery upgrade to the original 60Ah/22kWh cars. A shame - but as far as I'm aware BMW also never went into the home battery storage market either (at least in the UK) which was supposed to be the second life for the batteries.

    BMW uses Ah to give bigger numbers. Because BMW i3 with 60 battery is clearly better than Leaf with 30 battery.
    Soon some other manufacturer will rate their battery like battery banks are rated: 94 000 mAh - wohoo, much better than Tesla.

    I am a fan of Regular Car Reviews (done by fellow Pennsylvanian Mr. Regular) and on the Ask Mr. Regular video he brought up a very good point... The question was "how can we make electric cars less scary". The obvious answer is "more range" but he also mentions that there is literally no way a person with an apartment can be guaranteed charger access. There are neighborhoods (such as my own slum) where someone would actually steal your $400 charger cable. Or even just unplug it for amusement because "LOL, electric car".
    If you don't live in slums... then you don't have this problem. If you do... then that's a valid concern when buying electric.

    • @ivanf4023
      @ivanf4023 7 лет назад

      *****
      I know what you mean. I have a garage but no electricity in it. So I'd have to run a 240V line to the garage, then install a breaker panel and probably things like lights, surveillance, etc.
      Considering I don't want to live in the slum forever it's just not something I think it worth doing. Unless there are chargers at every petrol station (or gas station for those who live in the US) and maybe every parking lot, curbside, etc it's just not something the average city dweller can justify. And if you live in a city-suburb kind of place (i.e. most of Greater Pittsburgh is dense suburbs with on-street parking) you won't see them catch on.
      Furthermore, orange wires mean death. So to be an auto mechanic on electric cars you need to also be a certified electrician. Or really lucky...
