- BMW i3 94 Ah (2017/2018) is all-electric car and it has 33.2 kWh batteries (27.2 kWh available for user). BMW claims that i3 94 Ah can drive ~290 km (~180 miles) (NEDC test) or 235-255 km (~145-158 miles) (WLTP test) on one charge. BMW declares also ~200 km (~125 miles) range in real-life scenario. I checked what is the reality. I drove 251 km (~155 miles) in a city (spring time) and still 11 km (~7 miles) left. Enjoy!
I own a 2017 94 aH / 33 kW I3 BEV. I use it for daily commuting, my driving pattern is 80% of milage is at 85 km/h, 10% is at 50 km/h and 10% is at 110 km/h. I run in Ecopro mode in most weather and occasionally in Ecopro+ if I need to squeeze the extra milage out of it. In mild weather (15C or higher) it does between 225-240 km range. Same driving pattern in winter, worst case (-10C) was about 150 km. I would say that a yearly avg. range in Danish climate would be around 200 km with my driving pattern. Owned it for a year / 15.000 km in it - absolutely love it, highly recommended!
On a hot day with ecopro + (gets hot inside then), you can get 250-260 km range if you drive economically, but I don't need the range so rarely need to do that.
Getting my I3s in a couple of weeks, this gives me great hope for the real world mileage :) thanks !
My i3s is about to get on a ship as well! I'm in California, city/suburb driving, so I'm hoping my range is similar to the video. Can't wait.
Its @ max 50kmh consumption raises 35% when 96kph/60mph
I get nowhere near that range - then again, my go pedal is often mashed in the carpet and I see cars disappear in the mirror whereas you see cars disappear up the road and off into the distance. I could never drive a car that is this fun that slowly.
🤣 🤣
Just a tip lads, eco Pro+ mode means all extras are off I think even music no air con and so on, he was slowest car in whole video. BMW made to be fast and oh hell i3 is fast poor Vrs was eating my... Wind, if you just want range go for leaf.
I will do the test this Sunday from HK to Macau around trips. Hope I can complete the whole trips in safe
Hi, how did your test go?
Der Test zeigt den I3 bei reinem Stadtverkehr. Wäre interessant, das Ganze bei Autobahn mit mind. 120kmh Durchschnitt
Tested car was with heat pump?
Good effort but quite slow driving and not much heating inside!
Why should I drive much faster than speed limits?
Highway driving range would help... it's what I came looking for.
@@beforebefore Same. Freeway is what people want to see... Who gets range anxiety in a city driving at 10mph avg 🤣.
It must have been a very warm spring. My 60ah can barely go 80km. That would equate to ~160km if it were a 94ah. A lot less than 251km. You are lucky!
Driving super slow guarantees great range. 🤷♂️
160km/60Ah=2.66km
94Ah*2.66km=250km
This is not a real life range test. If you are only driving in an urban environment, "range anxiety" is never going to be an issue. It becomes an issue when you do long distance extra-urban journeys.
But hey , EV are still designed as city cars. How many times do you drive over 200km a day / during a weekend? Only communiting i could drive 2 weeks 😉.
I drive avarage 70km a day. Longest trip was 550km ( almost entirely autobahn ( 120km).
Only than would be more diffucult. 3 charge sessions should be needed and one would not count timewise as we took a 35 min eating break . so should loose max 45 min for charging , at least 3 charge possibilities on the way ( single).

Tesla aren't. The new Model S has been shown to do around 400 miles on a single charge. With the latest version of Supercharger and the capability of getting over 250 miles of range in less than 15 minutes, it's entered the realm of a long distance car. The new Roadster will do SF to LA and back on the freeway on a single charge and the new Telsa Semi and Megachargers will usher in the next generation of chargers.
I did the drive from Santa Ana (south LA) to just outside San Francisco when I picked up my used 2017 i3. Plenty of DC Fast Chargers on Hwy 99 and it was mostly drive at 80 mph for about 60 to 80 miles and fast charge to 80% or so, depending on whether the next fast charger was within 80 miles. The last leg was 100 miles and had no chargers whatsoever in the boonies - and at 3:30am, you don't want to be running out of juice! The drive was mostly flat apart from 'the grapevine' on I-5, going from near sea level to 4,000ft and back down to ~500ft when you enter the Central Valley.
The i3 is not recommended for long commute travelers
nice video, I own a bmw I3 94 Ah from January 2018, I have already traveled 23,000 km, I confirm the consumption shown in the video, big car !!
After.... it will not drive any other car :-)
Vincenzo Caruso so without the range extender the 94Ah version is capable of + 230 km on soft cruising in eco pro plus mode?
Surely i could get around 200km in a i3s in comfort??
What milage do you get when driving sporty or on the highway?
Thanks, good job
Good job .I like your videos keep it up
What was the music name??

Outside temperature?
As you could easily see on the movie: +3 Celsius
1001cars Thank you but i never see the temperature in the video

1001cars ok!
251 KM is really great but you were running about 10.9 wh/km as I see in the video. That's very low and indicated you were driving very slowly and gently, also I guess y ou had all climate control off. typically at 90 KPH on the high way with the climate control on you would see ~15 WH/KM and your range would be about 175 KM if it was above freezeing temps.
As you can see, the test was made in a city, without highways speeds. Reason: electric cars, especially like BMW i3, are made for cities. At higher speed BMW i3 uses:
90 km/h: 12,4 kWh/100 km
120 km/h: 17,3 kWh/100 km
140 km/h: 23,9 kWh/100 km
@@1001cars got ya. I just thought I would comment because your title is "real life conditions" and you were driving very slowly (which i love and I think is a great accomplishment) but it's a little not real life to drive this way. People do use i3's on the highways and because they are pretty sporty people also drive them much harder. I think that is important to know or else some people may think you can drive the car "normally" and get 250 KM which I would say is almost impossible. Just my opinion. I do think it's great you managed to squeeze 250 KM out of your 94 AH I3. MIne is a 2014 60 AH Rex and I get about 120 (now in 2020) most of the time in eco pro plus.
@@dondakin1 I think the problem is what you think is "normal driving". In Germany normal driving is sth like 40-60% on highway, in France most of drivers spend most of their time in a traffic jam. Sth what is "normal driving" will not be for others. As I wrote, BMW i3 is a city car and high amount of power of its engine does not change it. This is why hothatch is more city car than for example Passat but with weaker diesel engine. Never mind: I gave you energy consumption at three different speeds. You can just calculate range at these speeds, can't you? You know precisely the capacity of the battery from my range test, so it is a simple mathematics :) The information which i give to all my viewers is simple:
I make a eco driving (usually in a city) range test to measure the net capacity of the battery and to show what is possible to make.
I check what is energy consumption at different speeds and every of my viewer can easily calculate what is the range in his style of driving.
Is it sth wrong? How would you make a range test? Will you give 20% of the highway and rest in a city? Or maybe you will give 100 km of highway and rest in a city? But do you know that 100 km (for example) will be different part (i am thinking about percentage of whole trip) of driving in e-Golf and different part of driving in ID.3 77 kWh? So, tell me please: how would you make such test? I am really curious :)
@@1001cars Hey There I was not really criticizing your Range test I just thought it was more of a eco run. That's my only comment. Please conduct your tests as you see fit. To partly answer your question I can refer you to a range test I did with my friend on his Imiev @160000 KM it was more to show that the car still has decent range. The details are in the video ruclips.net/video/on8_fNSuaSU/видео.html
Nagyon jó videókat csinálsz!Gratulálok!(Hungary:))
Great work, folks. 👍😁
lose the music
Very good video. You started with 182 km (full battery) and then u could drove around 80 km more in city, with cold days... i believe in the spring /summer you could do 20 km more... This car is light only have 1320 KG. That is important to the range :)
Would like to see the same video but with the MAZDA MX30.
I am sorry, but this is not a range test. everyone knows an EV is super efficient in a city driving environment. And 2nd to that, you are always close to a charger when in a city. nobody gets range anxiety while driving in a city lol... A proper range test would have been 90kph or 100kph. I bet your average driving speed was SUPER LOW. like 10kph
Maybe it is better to watch the movie? Average speed is showed in it. I totally disagree with you about checking range of EV cars on a highway only. 90 km/h on highway? LOL! Who drives at such speed? 120 km/h OK, but not 90. EV cars (most of them, and BMW i3 especially) are build especially for cities. Most of their users drive them in a city, beside if you like it or not. In my other movies you can see how much energy BMW i3 consumes and EVERYBODY can calculate what is the range in every speed, not only 90 km/h, but you did not checked it...
He wrote "this is not a range test". If he wrote "this is not a 100% proper range test" or "you should make highway range test ALSO, not only in a city" I would agree with you, but not now. And also: what about i3 energy consumption I showed in other movies?
@2good2be4gotten agreed 🤝 I even said in my post that nobody gets range anxiety in a city.. 🤷♂️
I used the same style as he did :)
That low range is a good options for Blondies which driving cars twice a week to visit hairdresser .
Every electric car with range under 350km is a toy
Mario Passendorf not if you don't need that much mileage.
Next year i will trade in my F80 M3 for an i3s,
You calling me a blondie?
