    The Coast Guard, Florida wildlife, and local police marine units need to start zero tolerance enforcement here. Inspect every vessel for every violation when you have cause to stop them. First off in the defense of the person runnning the inbound yacht. The USCG or marine police should have issues a notice to all mariners of the inspection and dive activities near the bridge and proceed with caution. Secondly I have been in the commercial marine industry for 30 years, the last 18 holding a 500 ton offshore masters lisence. I have never seen a boat engaged in diving activities without being amchored or ties off to a stationary object, with a trailer line affixed to a poly ball, with a high flyer displaying the dive flag atop of it. Seeing that little boat not anchored or tied to the bridge, I would not have suspected them having divers in the water. The personell on the boat clearly have no clue of proper aids to navigation, and proper protocol when engaged in certain activities such as diving. The current there could have swept that diver far away if he had issues, with the boat in motion and no weighted tag line or anchor line to follow up, they could have been another unfortunate casualty due to blatant stupidity.
    Now the captain should have made a secutriy call on 16 stating they were inbound at the inlet. If they did so, the uscg or police sould have alerted them of the activity and procced with caution. Regardless of the diver situation, to see a small boat drifting and approaching a bridge with that much heat is crazy.
    There was no reason not to cut back as they would have had total control and not possibly swampes the little boat.
    Remember just because someone has a captains lisence, even a 100 ton master does not mean they know how to operate a large vessel. I have met many over the years qith 100 ton master, and oh do they talk a good game. Come to find out they never ran a boat over 35 foot. Talk is cheap, a piece of paper, just like a college degree is just a piece of paper that says you are supposed to be a professional. Always ask for references and proof of insurance. If hiring a captain amd they get insulted if asked for references, DO NOT HIRE THEM!!!! The industry is full of what we older commercial guys call;"papered a**holes."

    Yes police should of been present and shut traffic like they did when the plane fell on the bridge last year. Also the engineers on the boat should of have horns and sounded 5 short burst to awake the captain to pay attention to a small vessel actually police should go and fine them for not slowing down.

    Okay....most of the captains are getting dumber. The last two videos had yacht captains with their head up their butts then the second boat in each video (midnight express and an invincible) both stuff because they aren't even close to being on plane. 2 boats that should never stuff. As for the bridge inspection....they should have asked for assistance from the police, CG, or anyone to patrol the area. No wake at the bridge means 'no wake at the bridge'. Their small flags aren't going to be seen from the controls of a large vessel. Of course if they hadn't been traveling at war speed they might have actually noticed them.

    How can 5 big guys be in that boat. Like in "Jaws": we need a bigger boat. There should have been cops on both sides coming and going with signal flags and able to arrest these nutty capitains that know nothing. They own a boat but dont know the rules. Very scary situation for the divers!!!!! They could have been killed.

    My son and I dive offshore in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. I use two dive flags 36"x 60" that are way bigger than regulation. Still, boats from anywhere come racing right up to us. People don't know or care about boating rules or the safety of others.

    Speeding skipper was definitely negligent but did not see crew on divers tender using handheld VHF to warn speeding skipper! Were “Securitay” messages broadcast to all stations on VHF16 before the divers entered the water? And yes, Police or work boats with hazard lights stationed on both approaches would have made the work scene safer.

    Florida law:
    (4) Divers shall make reasonable efforts to stay within 100 feet of the divers-down flag on rivers, inlets, and navigation channels. Any person operating a vessel on a river, inlet, or navigation channel must make a reasonable effort to maintain a distance of at least 100 feet from any divers-down flag.
    (5) Divers must make reasonable efforts to stay within 300 feet of the divers-down flag on all waters other than rivers, inlets, and navigation channels. Any person operating a vessel on waters other than a river, inlet, or navigation channel must make a reasonable effort to maintain a distance of at least 300 feet from any divers-down flag.
    (6) Any vessel other than a law enforcement or rescue vessel that approaches within 100 feet of a divers-down flag on a river, inlet, or navigation channel, or within 300 feet of a divers-down flag on waters other than a river, inlet, or navigation channel, must proceed no faster than is necessary to maintain headway and steerageway.

    "Does the engineering crew have a right to be upset with the yacht captain?" - I mean, if you need to ask... yes, of course yes they have a right. Dive flags are out, so there's divers in the water and you've got no fucking clue where they are, so you slow the fuck down until you've well cleared the dive location. I dunno man, but it seems it's time for USCG and various other agencies to start doing some more stringent checks at Haulover because the sheer amount of fuckwittery on display there is absolutely mindboggling.

    Damn right they have the right to be mad. Law states vessels MUST stay away 150' when a dive flag is flown.
    Though it would have been a wise move to have police presence while the inspection was underway, especially in such a high traffic area.

  • @townsville69

    They met the (bare minimum) safety requirements. They didn't meet the job site safety requirements. Those tiny dive flags are like fixing a pothole on a highway with a single traffic cone.

    Did the inspection crew notify the CG to broadcast a warning to all traffic there was going to be divers conducting an inspection, also should have been a LEO boat on the east & west approaches to the bridge channel. If this inspection crew just dropped into the water without prior & proper notification, they are looking for OSHA / maritime violations for their divers. With that said it is totally the boat captain's responsibility to conduct a safe passage, but this is a crazy inlet with drunks & sightseers, etc.

    Maritime rule of the road; Alpha flag flying means; I have divers in the water, keep well clear at low speed. That skipper can be charged for disobeying the rule.

    The dive crew has to conduct their inspection at the slowest tide. I'm not sure when that is at failover, but where I live it goes dead stop. The capt. is suppose to know what each flag means and is suppose to slow down. From what is seen, the tide is going out their core the capt. could have slowed almost to a stop. He should have been chased down and find by the Marine police or Coast Guard. Those people in those yauhts think they don't have to obey the laws. They need to crack down at failover anyway.

  • @acreguy3156
    @acreguy3156 4 месяца назад

    I would assume that yacht captain would have a master's license for a certain tonnage. Doesn't basic seamanship teach you about diver flags? On the other hand, the engineers would be well served to bring a bull horn with them to announce a warning and broadcast a maintenance announcement on a known com channel. I'm only guessing here, since I don't own a boat.

  • @AuthenticDarren

    The inspectors were right to be annoyed, however I must say their flags are rather small. Maybe the city of Miami should supply them with larger and clearer means of indication to boats coming into the bay from out at sea. It wouldn't take a minute to send someone with a big flag along with clear signage and install it at the entrance to the inlet whilst the work is in progress..

  • @kingkerry123
    @kingkerry123 6 месяцев назад

    Visibility for the dive boat was questionable at best given the size of many boats coming in and out. That said, the yacht pilot was clearly ignoring the No Wake zone which is the greater issue here.
