Constructed between the 15th and 20th centuries, the walls of these communal structures can reach heights of up to 60 feet. What do you find most interesting about this UNESCO World Heritage site?

Hey there, National Geographic. I love your videos but it is difficult to read the words and watch the video, and enjoy each image, at the same time. Could you find a human being to narrate the words? I say 'human being' because I would boycott your channel if you used a computer generated voice. Yes, I know I can stop the footage and start again but that's not one does when watching a t.v. show so why should I do this with youtube? Anyway, just a suggestion. Cheers.

Fascinating. So this is where Apple found inspiration for its "state of the art" headquarters. The rounded design has been around for centuries. And yet people thought that the shape of the Apple headquarters was so innovative. Who knew.

I spent a few days living with a local family in one of the Tulou in 2017. It was a unique and memorable experience. Unlike many other heritage sites in China, this one is very alive. It was very nice talking to the residents whose family have been living there for centuries and the Hakka lanague is very fun to learn too!

When they say "communal homes", do they mean shared facilities like kitchens or bath houses, or is this just an early version of an apartment complex? I've heard of actual communal homes somewhere in one of the Scandinavian countries where several families have separate private rooms (bedroons, bathrooms, etc.) but there is a shared kitchen or workspace or recreational area.

We have one in Taiwan as well, in Miaoli (苗栗)! It’s more of a replica though, housing a museum. We call it the 客家圓樓 (Hakka Round Building). We do have Hakka populations in Taiwan, but, as far as I can tell, they are pretty well integrated into the mainstream Taiwanese Han culture now, and people are fighting very hard to preserve the culture in Taiwan. Every now and then we do have Hakka words sneaking into our daily vernaculars though.
