- I've always been fascinated by Tulou - also known as 'earth buildings'. So I decided to take a trip to rural Fujian province to check them out for myself! What is it? What's inside? You'll have to watch and see.......

lucky coin Well, Tulou only exists in Southern China, where Mulan grown up in the northern China, so the movie did not reflect the real situation.
lucky coin at that time, Hakka has not become Hakka yet, they still lived in north and no need to build a castle like this.
Just be grateful they didn't cast Scarlett Johansson as Mulan.
A couple of things I find interesting
1. She doesn't disparage the rural community as run down and is pretty open minded about the whole experience.
2. The hotel room is outfitted with modern furnishings... quite unlike an actual Tulou that people lived in. Quite amusing.
I'm an Indonesian Hakka. Thank you for showing our culture. There's a Hakka Museum in Jakarta modelled in the shape of a Tulou.

I went to Tulou with my friends before, but we just visited a few famous Tulous in 2 hours. You know more about Tulou than 99.99% of Chinese. Such a Genius.

A tulou is a small fortress actually, they were built like this for defense and security purpose in old times. And there were similar buildings across China in ancient time
But fortresses are usually for kings or nobles. This is like a whole village. So it's like an ancient apartment complex. With shared club house facilities. A real bummer though, cuz you need to get out to poo.
@@Jumpoable no it's actually a fortresses, because hakka means guests, they are migranting from northern part of china mostly during the fall of song dinasty when the mongol invaded the capiltal. but they are not so welcome in the south, that's why they build fortresses like these to protect their community. you can see there's no window looking outside on the first and second floor.
Its basically an apartment building concept, just a few thousand years old. The combination of multiple families living in a efficient and easy to protect structure is awesome. Does show real innovation from back then.
My ancestors were Hakka people who migrated to Malaysia in the beginning of 20th century. The Tu Lou community is fascinating, but also a testament of the perseverance, tenacity and survival of a cultural group. I am a proud Hakka who still speak Hakka and cook Hakka food though living in the US right now.
Fun fact: decades ago, when US saw these buildings from their satellites, and thought they were Nuclear Launchers. After investigating, Americans were relieved!!!

They can't just come in and take Iraqi oil for free, you know. The reason Bush invaded Iraq was pretty much having a lot to do with re-election. The American people and people from just about every democratic country around the world tend to re-elect the incumbent presidential candidate during the time of war. And that's exactly what happened. The US invaded Iraq and Bush was re-elected.

So sad to see the older and uninhabitated TuLous in a state of disrepair. Maybe those could be fixed up and rented into some kind of AirBNB model by their owners for the duration they're unoccupied. Would be such a huge boon to the local rural economy :)

The most extreme inaccuracy of the live-action Mulan is that Mulan is Northerner and the story took place in the North, while Tulou is a kind of southern building.
Imagine a movie about a winged hussar, but she came from a beautiful neighbourhood that looks Venice.
One of the most essential lessons I learned from your video is that I think everyone should travel when they are young

Oh my goodness, this is fascinating and creative historic architecture! I have not had the chance to see the live action film of Mulan, so I hadn’t seen any toulo shown anywhere ever!
Could this be a predecessor of the apartment house with a large courtyard? Certainly the idea of living this way as an entire village is a good way to survive together in tougher times.
I would guess that the community as a village would pull together during times of adversity such as repairing building damage from storms, helping to look after each other’s young children while parents are busy, and helping each other when illness strikes.
As a Chinese, I appreciate your video for spreading Chinese culture, and I am amazed by the way you look at the world. I really like your videos.
Amazing video and insight Amy , well done on integrating into its culture and locals too! Incredible to know co-living as communities existed centuries ago and its making a come back with co working and co living as communities again. Being self sufficient is also coming back for pure nutrients and freshness from the ground and food source. Keep up the great work in your adventures !

Tulou is also known as the first ever apartment complex in history! And it was featured in the upcoming Mulan movie as her house though that was not historically correct LOL. Hakka people are known to be great politicians in history, eg Sun Yat Sen and Lee Kuan Yew. The term Hakka means guest people, so when they moved to the south in Guangdong and Fujian provinces few hundred years ago, they were seen as outsiders and was despised especially by Cantonese people. That was also one of the reason they designed and built their houses in such a way to protect their community. And it was said that Hakka women didn't bind their feet in ancient days.
I'm half Hakka, half Cantonese. No wonder my left hand don't like my right hand. lol

Another rumour mention by Han Suyin, a Hakka herself, is that when they moved ... they also abandoned their infant girls...
I was literally there a few years back. The air was so fresh, and near to where Blondie stays is a river, near the river, is or maybe was a restaurant. I did stay in one. It was a very calming experience.

Kolkata used to have a huge Hakka Chinese population. My paternal grandmother was half Hakka Chinese and she also used to say that she had Tung blood in her. My cousins are full blooded Chinese and moved to Canada in the late 90s.

Being of Hakka descent it’s great to see the inside of a 土楼。Not sure about the lack of toilets 😂 though..
Tulou is actually really of interest to the architecture community. From the beginning of the 20th century, the idea of creating a systematic utopian society based on modular assignment of living space has been brought forth by architects and theorists, notably Le Corbusier. The later social housing programs around the world all attempted to formulate this efficient and promising model. The social housing program in St. Louis is one in particular that has made an impact. But due to the inherit flaw of the system, the project soon turned into a breeding ground for criminal activities and was torn down. Prestigious architecture school today like the AA school of architecture and Harvard GSD are still researching the possibility of modular community (especially in coping with the exponential growth in population). So it is fascinating to see this idea being implemented in China a few hundred years ago.
Because they don't have an East Asian Confucian-based communal culture to begin with. Plus the Hakka are just getting high on tea, not crack cocaine.

Now I know where Apple get their building design from. So the Chinese are originally the more creative! Americans just copy it.
It is both admirable and easily forgivable that Blondie took some “artistic license” for we Western viewers, to draw us in to the video.
Otherwise we might have not taken the time to view this incredible world heritage site.
But for those curious, The Ballad of Hua Mulan is actually set in the Northern Wei era (386-536). That is where her injured father was called upon to defend the Tuoba realm from Rouran (Hun) invaders.
So yes, it’s Northern in origin.
However, the point Blondie was making was that these people in the video live in what is essentially a fortress.
To westerners like myself, whether accurate or not, mention Hua Mulan, and we’re sucked right in because we know the story because of the cartoon.
Her play on words served a good poetic purpose and is something we westerners do all the time to get someone’s attention to a broader concept.
It would be like when I visited the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, and innocently commented to my friends, “Wow, the Pharaohs of Egypt really got around...”
Not quite true, of course... and I knew it. But it opened up a discussion of common architecture and questions regarding humanity’s deep history which was my actual intent.
It enabled a friend of mine who is of Mexican descent to punch me in the shoulder and correct me. He was grateful to me for the joke because usually he is shy and has difficulties opening the floor to historical things about his culture for fear that what he has to say might not be interesting.
Shy people for some reason are often afraid of saying what they know, and need to be encouraged by creative means.

These buildings sure look similar to missile silos, especially from the top. During the Nixon administration, the U.S. spotted these Tulou and were trying to figure out what they are. It would be nice to see these buildings but to stay there for a night is a different story.
