  • Grandmaster Ben Finegold looks at three memorable games from the decades around the turn of the 20th century. The "Gold Coin Game" Levitsky-Marshall is included. Did spectators really throw money at the board in appreciation?

    For years, I have celebrated GM Ben Finegold for the rule "Never play f3/f6." Then I heard, he had stolen/misappropriated it in blatant violation of US copyright laws. Now I like Ben even more. ;)

    In 3:00, Ben tell us about the open f-file for attacks against white, but the black king is more exposed at the same time. It always seems confusing to me, as a lower rated player, when GMs teaches these classes, they don't mention the double edged nature of the positions. So, either they dont wanna confuse telling too much, or they have a good reason to ignore other stuff, and this reason is bever explained. This makes it so hard to grasp what is going on.

    I am a casual chess player so correct me in case i am wrong:
    8:37 isnt better to play Knight E2 check, White King has to go to H1, Black Rook F2, White Rook F2, Black Queen E1, White Rook F1, Black Queen F1 -> Check mate?
    Looks like a guaranteed mate, as played white can still survive trading both queens.

    • @Garryn_
      @Garryn_ 6 лет назад

      I know this is hella late, but in this variation, after black pays Rxf2, I don't see how Qd8+ isn't immediately winning for white.

    I've seen all Finegold episodes (even home series), mastered FINEGOLD-WEST gambit (but please dont transpose it to Kummer line!) and with this gambit i'm simply crushing all IM's and FM's.
    my most profound conlusions after master lectures:
    never play f6 (if you forget about all Mr FIngold advices and still play this move you can simply resign)
    b4 is a bad move (too aggresive)
    dont move same piece twice in a row!!
    good bishop is better than bad bishop
    if there are only kings and opposite bishops on the board you can ask your opponent for a draw (playing for the win makes no sense because bishops cant catch each other)

    Can someone explain why there is a separate women’s class? And as a developmental psychologist I am well aware of differences seen between men and women... but these differences are negligible except at the extremes, as you would see with any distribution curve. And while men score slightly higher with spatial reasoning, again, it’s not enough to justify an entirely different chess class

    • @insouciantFox
      @insouciantFox 9 месяцев назад

      Historical reasons mostly. Now it's used to popularize the game to women, but the "men's" section is really the open section. Women are welcome in the open section, but the highest rated woman is like 2600, while the men reach into the 2800s. That's a clear separation.
