Bearings are 88503 which are available from reputable suppliers. The extended race on each side provides space for a felt seal behind the shield. By using standard double shield 6203s you’re not get the benefit of a seal on each side.
I could be wrong but if I remember correkt we used to heat and cool of the side we wanted the steel to bend towards. Thats opposit to what you did?

Looked that way to me, also. Probably confused when watching Fenner do a long shaft where he indicates on the 'hump' rather than the end.

You have too much in the chuck
With full contact, if jaws aren't parallel, you can kink the shaft. I have actually proved it to myself.
