The weirdest thing is that the way the ages and years line-up, Jotaro was already a dad back in Diamond is Unbreakable. He just absolutely never mentioned it.
meh it's jotaro, not really weird he didn't mention it. that kind of behavior explains why jolyne felt the way she did about him and grew up how she did.
This part takes place fully in Florida, not in Japan at all. Jolyne is 1/4 Japanese bc of her father's lineage but she was presumably born and raised in the US and canonically speaks English, like everyone else in the part.
ACTUALLY its really funny. If were going with real technicalities, Joseph is actually british and he married an italian woman. Which makes Holly, half british and half italian. That makes jotaro, 1/3 japanese, italian, and british. Then THAT would make Jolyne 1/4, American, Japanese, Italian, and British.

I love how Abi & Imon have become experts on Jojo's. They clearly now understand the 2nd and 3rd level Jojo references "That's Chocoliotta's daughter!" LOL
Great video! And I loved the post-episode talk!! I absolutely agreed when you said that Araki has always been ahead of his time! The one thing I hope people can get out of watching Jojo's is that there is really an indefinite amount of ways someone can be 'masculine' and that it's just ridiculous to try and label very few and specific behaviors and looks as the one way of 'being a man'
In this part Araki aside of the musical reference he also use fashion as a reference too... Gwess is Guess, try to find in every episode the fashion references.
Speaking of the evils of the prison system and Araki's touching on LGBT+ Issues: There's a slightly odd scene that would have been in Episode 1 that was cut from the anime. Where the person behind Jolyne in the line to be processed for the prison is a trans man. It's a weird scene because of the contrast between Jolyne's innocent/shocked/wow'd reaction - I guess she's never seen a trans man before because she's just Edit: literally saying word for word "Whoa! It's a new dawn for humanity..." and the dude's discomfort at the situation. Even moreso than everyone else. It's dehumanising for all of them because they're all naked as they're filing past the doctor who's examining them right there in the middle of the room but his expression of distress and discomfort is kind of haunting. He's absolutely ripped - he's more buff than the Part 5 version of flashback Jotaro and given the way people are looking at him I'd guess he's probably had bottom surgery as well as top surgery and yet he's still being forced into the woman's prison. Which is a thing that still happens, it's just kind of weird that Araki decided to spend a page and a half in order to hint, through just a haunted look, at the specific horror of being trans while in the prison system. I'm not really sure what to take away from it.
She had two lines for the situation. “This is a female prison right?” and “It’s a new dawn for humanity” after she learned about the hormone treatments based on fan translations, which is a lot different from what your quote is implying. She was just curious too, not even demeaning at all. If you’re curious about the reason though, Araki went on several trips to Florida and the prisons, and even talked with the wardens there, so he probably wanted to write all his thoughts and highlights he remembered into the manga itself, and that was probably a memorable moment for him. Plus, y’know, the manga was written in 2001, it was a much different time then, and hormone injections were probably much newer.
@@flerken4233 I've only read part 6 once - about three years ago so that wasn't meant to be a direct quote but the impression that I got from it and her wide eyed look and what she said was that she thought this was something new and interesting. I never said she was demeaning to him, the doctor is though. There are two translations of the scene that I've found one says "[he's] been taking hormone pills" the other says "hormone injections". Testosterone isn't available in pill form (there is an oral form of testosterone but it's not really a "pill" and it's quite new afaik) so I wonder what the original actually said. (I'm assuming the character is a trans man as opposed to a woman who's been taking T to get swole, because T doesn't make your fucking tits fall off Estrogen HRT was developed in the early 1930s and was being used to treat trans women in Weimar Germany at the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft ...until the Nazis burned all the research and arrested or drove the researchers and patients into exile. Testosterone wasn't isolated until 1935 and I'm not totally sure when it was first used to treat trans men but it was being used at the latest by the 1950s (1951 was the first phalloplasty).

also it was cut out from the anime but in the manga jolyne had to pay a good amount of money to keep her hair and clothes in prison, not sure why the anime cut that out tho
Japan? JAPAN?What the hell made you think this was set in Japan? Nothing about this setting even resembles Japan. The characters don't even have Japnese names, for God's sake! Jotaro is the only one who is truly Japanese. All the other characters, including Jolyne, are American. This show clearly states right from the start that it is set in America. How the hell can you be confused about the setting? They say Green Dolpine Street Prison is in Flordia and it looks very much like Florida, but even after they reveal it has a crocodile farm, you STILL think it's in Japan?! You never made this mistake with Parts 1-5. Open your eyes and use your brains, girls!
Also one more thing. You were right about Arakis progressive approach. Araki wrote part 6 as a huge middle finger to shonen jump. And he got in a LOT of trouble making part 6. Because the publishers didn't like that Jojo is a woman here. Araki was fighting against his management when making part 6. And as a result, Jojo is now NO LONGER a part of shonen because of part 6. From halfway into part 6 though part 8 Jojo became a seinen. This was almost as if it was araki's punishment for going against the expectations of Shonen's publisher.
It is a progressive part but Araki decided he was no longer able to handle weekly schedule. He wanted more freedom of ideas and expression which restrictive Shonen Jump couldn't provide.
The weirdest thing is that the way the ages and years line-up, Jotaro was already a dad back in Diamond is Unbreakable. He just absolutely never mentioned it.
