  • I am up in the remote village of Wincle, in Cheshire, for a walk around the remains of the little known 18th century 'Folly' Paper Mill.
I was invited to join @leiceexplore and his fellow explorers, Steve, Dave and Andy, on their trip up north.
The mill was built in 1790 by Abraham Day as a third and final attempt, after his first two mills on the site were washed away in floods.
His long suffering wife Sarah told Abraham that if he attempted to build a third mill, she would take to her bed, and never leave until she died.
Abraham built the third mill, the remains of which we are here to explore, and Sarah, kept her word, and indeed never left her bed for several years until she eventually died.
It's said the ghost of Abraham Day is often seen wandering around what remains of his mill, so keep an eye out incase we inadvertently captured him on film!
Folly Mill, so named for its bizarrely remote, but stunning location just off the River Dane, was closed in 1867 and has been left to the elements ever since.
I hope you enjoy the views.

IMO that was your best video, maybe I’m biased because it’s an incredible structure, but it well edited to. I don’t think I’ll bother uploading mine lol!

Interesting viewing and detection work, love the enthusiasm 🙂 With regards roads/paths in, perhaps the terrain wasn't so wooded? Might've been more open and accessible, nature's quick to reclaim . ♥

Another great video regarding our lost history that you guys bring back to life for us.
The trees surrounding the ruins of the Mill today may in the main be self seeding ones that were never there when the the Mill was in action. They have been left to grow which in the future will be partly responsible for the lose of what’s left, if that makes sense!

Hayup Gareth I'm glad he chose to build the third one in stone after the two paper mills washed away!
Looks like the site of an ancient fortress, so many stones knocking about, in the hill sides an river bed.
If he supplied rough wrapping paper could there be records of trade? where did he live?
Did he have his own print works isolated often is covert, there ought to be photographs if it where a folley folks would take pictures as at 1860 that was all the go.
I've never trusted the notion of Folley often used to redirect attention from thetrue purpose of a thing!
as in folley,s on stately homes, where most often lookout towers an fire beacon signalling to alert the next big landowner sat in there folly look out tower that the locals where out in force again not happy over the enclosures act etc etc..
Very interesting this I have a feeling there's much more to Abraham Day,!
also looks like a mineral water location, perhaps competition to Buxton water?! That'd never do.
Is there an artists rendition of it somewhere or a photo what a fab location..
Great stuff as ever an Cheers
