i dedicate this to my late father, who died on the 20th January 2024 age 91. He respected and enjoyed all of Elgars works, every Sunday without fail, he would take a random vinyl's and enjoy. god i miss him.....
people living in Berlin are so lucky. I am 33 years old and have been here twice. Each time took me over 10 hours flight from China, and took months ahead to buy the ticket online. look forward to my 3rd trip.
The story behind this is what makes it so powerful. Elgar, deep in darkness and falling out of love with music was visited by his German friend Jaeger. Somehow, and we dont know what was said, Jaeger resurrected Elgar's passion for melody and create this piece...in my opinion his most evocative. It speaks of his connection with the countryside surrounding his Malvern home, his love and respect for his friend but most of all the growing resiliance that comes from recovery. English, British, European but most of all human.
Merci pour cet éclaicissement. Thank you for this precious comment. Such moving music. So much English and universal as well. Undescribable the effect on the privileged people like me who had the opportunity to listen to it at the Albert Hall, in the presence of the Queen (August 1994).
We do know what was said. Elgar expressed his sense of failure but Jaeger, who worked for his music publisher Novello, encouraged him and the conversation turned to Beethoven. Jaeger hummed a theme from the adagio of the Pathetique and Elgar was enthused and continued composing. The Enigma variations were his first truly gigantic success (an echo of that theme can be heard in the Enigma theme) after which the floodgates opened. A year later, Gerontius was a huge international success. .
M'mmmm but are you sure, about that? I read of a far simpler reason ; Elgar was tinkling on the keys, searching for a theme, and played the opening bars of this, to be famous--music, and his wife called out, that's a nice one dear, a 'Keeper', and so he did.
The sonoric rise and fall, the swelling of the seas surrounding us, the undulation of grassy hills - how it makes me feel for a land that is forever England.....
The Berliners give their all to make an extraordinary intensity of sound. If only every professional orchestra in the world had this level of commitment
How reverential is this? The irony is not lost in who’s playing what and with so much tenderness, care and d beauty… rare it is to witness such maturity … bravo Berliner philharmonic for your sincere talent and respect.
Often conductors follow Elgar's tempo direction too faithfully, making it sound like a marching band piece. This performance gets the tempo just right :)
I don't know how Maestro Rattle can conduct this without a tissue in one hand. How can you not be moved to tears from this beautiful performance of one of Elgar's masterpieces.
Eu aprecio muito essa música. É sublime eleva o espírito do Ser ás alturas. E a interpretação por essa magistral orquestra mostra a grandeza da perfeição humana. Parabéns e obrigado
Brilliant conducting of possibly the greatest orchestra on the planet. Nobody gets me as emotional as Sir Simon Rattle he is just phenomenal even at his age. Long may he live to conduct!
Reminds me of my Grandad. He was wounded twice at the Somme. Got through the Great War but never talked about his experiences. A real gentle man and special like the rest of his generation were. This world is growing worse by the day. Stand strong and wait for the Son's return. Amen.
Thank you for sharing what needs to be know, an entire culture lost to ease and convenience. God keep your grandfather and bless him for his sacrifice and elegance after the pain.
I am not speaking this with the slightest bit of arrogance, but it really is such a pity that for most people who are non-classical listeners, movie is the only gateway for them to discover classical masterworks
@@KinkyLettuce Very true. Our current generation can now only relate to classical music through cinema. But ya know what, if that's what it takes to expose everyone to classical music, then by golly that's what we shall do lol.
Show your solidarity to the Greek Philharmonic Orchestra ... They couldn't have chosen a more fitting song to show the anguish they must have been feeling when they were told that "there is no place for music". Brought me to tears.
Inspires a quiet admiration, like England. There's a silent dignity and greatness that doesn't require bravado or fake arrogance because you know you're truly great and no words, no actions will change that. That's England. Other countries scream how big they're, how mighty they think they're, the truly greats don't need to. elgar's music is about that subdued majesty that only england has, and for the record I'm not english.
I'm an American and completely agree with you, Juan. (Even more so after four years of a president elected in 2016.) The "silent dignity ... that doesn't require bravado" beautifully expresses the music and England at her best.
Your comment applies so well, I think, to a previous England - one which is still there but which has recently shot itself in the foot and hidden the nicest parts of its character under a snarling hostility. I hope my England can find itself again before all is lost. These feelings inspired me to revisit Elgar, conducted by the magnificent Berliners and Simon Rattle.
if u can't hear heaven and worship God after such a rendition, then I don't know what else to call u,this is the height, may God bless all the listeners

Tommy England Tommy, my dear, I'm certainly not worried about myself. What I am worried is you along with the millions whom have their hearts hardened.
I'm with Tommy. No gods no devils, no heaven no hell. Just this Earth, this Solar System, this Galaxy and this Universe. As to "hardened hearts", why did your god create the Earth and all life on it, then drown everything but an old man and his family??? I would not want to go where that god is when I die. I would be afraid he would bring some other calamity down upon me. Fairy tales and nonsense.
Everett Cox I like how you distinguish the difference between good and evil. Naturalists and scholars haven't particularly concluded the origin of our ethics; well, there are muddled incoherent theories to it. Everett, how are we able to tell what is good and evil? Why was it wrong for God to drown civilization except the "old man and his family"? And if you're in favor of moral relativism, you contradicted yourself by making a moral judgement to a "fairy tale nonsense".

This masterpiece sounds like the instruments are beathing in and out with a lush breath
Majestic. It is amazing that the BPO so often sound like a proper German orchestra, which I love, but in this piece they sound astoundingly British! it was as though one of our British orchestras was playing this... beautiful playing as always, from the best orchestra in the world.
Interesting to see the different body language of musicians on 'stronger' areas. Cellos, violins, some almost static while others nearly standing from the chairs :-)

I can relate
The Berliners give their all to make an extraordinary intensity of sound. If only every professional orchestra in the world had this level of commitment
ok---but I was disappointed with the closing, too sudden, the sound almost disappered.
They are the very best, ever.
Philip Croft That’s the end of a kind, generous life. Rattle has it just right.
A awful lot do.
It speaks of the human heart, i think-- sad, pensive, triumphant, swelling and sinking on the waves of life, rising again with love and hope.

@ the Berlin philharmonic playing the most enigmatic and quintessentially British piece and in homage of QEII… 😊 that we are able to witness this.

About 2 mins in there is a magical moment where conductor, ochestra and the music of Elgar are totally at one. Beautiful
Music simply does not get any more perfect than this.
Tears in eyes. Thank you sir Simon Rattle and Elgar of course..
The Berlin Phil is the greatest thing to happen to humanity. And the Berlin Phil's RUclips Channel is the only thing worth having internet.
A perfect example of what a conductor means to a performance: this is a passionate rendition of the piece Barenboim treats with reverence, and awe!
The Berlin Philharmonic shines as bright as the conductor. Watch how the concertmaster reacts when Rattle points to him.
Passionate! Even the musicians seemed to be caught up in passionate musical expression!
