The Mysterious Mr Elgar. Episode 15 - The Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar

- How to win friends and influence people! They say great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget. Well, not if you're Edward Elgar. He counted up his friends. He gave them each a theme tune. He threw in an enigma. And he dazzled (and mystified...) generations to come.

And when the world needed him most, he returned!
INDEED
Amen to that!
Much appreciation for the touching comment - and there's many more on the way!
@@ClassicsExplained will there be Bolero, Pines of Rome, Pastoral Symphony, Rhapsody in Blue, Song of the night, Carnival of the Animals, and The Bartered Bride?
Agreed! I couldn't have been more pleased to see this new video is my subscription list!
I once read that, as a child in school, E.E. was asked by a teacher: “What’s your name?” he replied “Edward Elgar.” The teacher, offended, told him: “It’s ‘Sir’”. E.E. prophetically replied: “I’m sorry, Sir Edward Elgar!”
Love it! Hope that true. Its hilarious!
Gosh! And I thought he was just the composer who wrote Pomp and Circumstance that plays at every high school and college graduation. I might need to listen to this one in full.
Listen to the two symphonies, the violin concerto, the cello concerto, the triumphal march of caractacus and all of the pomp and circumstance marches
@@davidwarren202Thanks for the suggestions.
Until now I hadn’t realized that Elgar’s Enigma theme was also used in the soundtrack to “The Matrix” - in the track “Clubbed to Death” by Rob Dougan. Amazing stuff!
I already realized it upon hearing that movie OST decades ago!
That was my first association. I am puzzled why it was mentioned in this video. I've waited and waited.
And they didn't mention it:(
So perhaps the Enigma Variation truly was the friends we made along the way
Nice
*chef kiss*

The amount of happiness and pure joy I experienced on see u guys back is ridiculous I tell u.......RIDICULOUS!
This makes us so happy to read :)!
@@ClassicsExplained can you please make new episodes about Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Ravel’s Bolero, Saint Seans’ Carnival of the Animals, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Mahler’s Song of the Night, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Rossini’s Barber of Seville, and Smetana’s Bartered Bride? It would be nice.
@@meganlewis2377 Yes.....if there was a petition for all this......I would've blindly signed it. Tho....I want Respighi's entire roman trilogy......not just the pines. Also....his Church windows will make an interesting video.
Me: "Where do your relatives live?"
Others: "They live in the city of A, the village of B, the country of C, etc."
Elgar: "They live in my music."
Omgmgmgmg he’s back!!!!!
2023 is saved!!!!
Love it!!! And it will be for a time yet when we bring out many more
This is the best essay on the Enigma Variations I've ever read, seen, heard.
the way you portrayed this story warms my heart
First Samonella, then Bluejay, then Greatbigstory, and now this channel. Can't wait to see more of these awesome videos from you!

The real Enigma was the friends we made along the way. - Great! Love it!
THEY’RE BACK! Most underrated channel on RUclips
We appreciate this comment so much!
Man, I thought we'd never see the day. So glad you're back
Much appreciated - we love our fans and had to give more even if it took a while!
I remember one time in high school, my orchestra was going to play an arrangement of Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Unfortunately, the pandemic canceled the concert and I was a little disappointed. But I still have my second violin part so I can still have a little bit of Elgar in my heart.
Edit: I wonder what the next piece you are working on next
Another edit: How about Benjamin Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes? It is such a sad opera
I knew I made a good decision putting notifications on this channel! 😊 I appreciate how you brought all these different characters to life, so much more entertaining and understandable than some dry old article about which movement represents what.
Thanks so much - exactly what we're aiming for :)

I first started watching your videos earlier this year, as I just started music appreciation at my first year at college. I kept listening to all these pieces of music and getting hooked on them. It then led me to looking up these songs on RUclips and finding your channel. I saw when your last upload was and was disappointed that these 14 lovely deep dives into the music would be the only ones made by you. The joy when I woke up and saw this in my subscription feed was indescribable. Wonderful video as always and I'm excited for what other videos you will upload.
This is such an appreciated comment - keeping listening, loving and learning!
yessss, yesssss, yesssss!
Excuse my outburst.
This was a long awaited return.
These videos introduced me to some of my favourite music.
LOVELY comment - thanks so much! We have many more videos on the way don't you worry
His Cello concerto would make a fabulous part two! :) :) :)
Love this
I really appreciate seeing the skyline of Worcester. I lived there for three years during my studies, and could immediately recognize many of the features shown!
So glad to take you back!
and another astounding Elgar piece... the Cello Concerto
Brilliantly done! I have also read that throughout his life Elgar was prone to exaggeration, and after his death some of his closest friends speculated that the “enigma“ in this was just another one of his exaggerations meant to exasperate people as they searched to solve the puzzle. My favorite theory, though is the one that you propose. “Friendship” makes the most sense in context of what Elgar’s circle of friends meant to him and his ability to achieve what he did with so little formal background. Thank you, and Cheers!
HOLU SHIT MY FAVOURITE CHANNEL IS BACK FROM THE DEAD! WELCOME BACK CLASSICS EXPLAINED!!!!
WOW - LOVE this comment! Thanks for your support and, don't worry, lots of videos on the way :)
Thank you for making these videos. I never thought that such beautiful music could be made even more beautiful. Adding some context to this piece really makes me love it so much more. I wish everyone could experience a love as beautiful as Elgar's love for Augustus Jaeger. It makes me cry every time I hear it.
Thank you this means so much to hear this - I really hope it adds another dimension. Keep loving and listening to classical music :)
@@ClassicsExplained can you make some opera episodes about Bizet’s Pearl Fishers, Smetana’s Bartered Bride, and Rossini’s Barber of Seville?

5:35 Another piece in time signature 1/1 is the scherzo of Borodin's second symphony. I've heard it said that Borodin chose that ti,e to emphasize the breathtaking speed of the movement.
It's 1/1 really a time sig. Or, is it a lack of a time sig?
Very glad to see that you have returned!

Finally you're back! Please tell me you have something of Scriabin like Poeme de l'extase or something more daring like Bruckner haha. Really glad for this surprise
Thanks so much! Yes there are more to come :) Great suggestions - I'm going through a Bruckner phase at the moment
@@ClassicsExplained So do I, I really never heard of him but I've jumped right in to it, think the finales of the 5th and 6th are some of the greatest I ever heard in symphonies, and the 4th I really connected because it remember someone I'm in love with. My suggestion with Scriabin is more because of his weird philosophies including his involvement with Theosophy, but I really like his First Symphony, terribly underrated in my opinion.
Amazing work as always! I love laughing while I'm learning! 😃😃😃
Brilliant - thanks so much. Keep loving learning and listening
Wow, I was just listening to Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights a couple of hours ago wondering what it's all about and whatever happened to @ClassicsExplained.
