As a Geordie, born and bred in County Durham and for the last fifty years a proud Canadian, I too have happy memories, as a visiting chorister…..of singing and worshipping in that magnificent cathedral. One of my ancient relatives, William by name, like mine, was a leading light in the life of those who served there. His portrait was hanging in the library the last time I visited, umpteen years ago. I hope his bearded image still looks sternly down on one and all. He was also one of the country’s leading archeologists in the Victorian era and sold a couple of his private collections to wealthy Americans. His family enjoyed and prospered from his reputation and his generosity.
That's exactly what I thought. It may be that their voices hit perfect resonance with some of the pipes of the organ behind them. A similar effect can be heard in Vaughan-Williams' Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis, using the "desks" of the string instruments together with the quartet and full string orchestra. All in all, a fantastic vocal group easily on par with the Tallis Scholars.
John Lyon I'm going to find that one. I have a disc of Vaughan Williams works by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields but, no disrespect to Sir Neville Marriner or Iona Brown, there are better versions.

I played an organ transcription of Elgar's Nimrod at my mothers funeral. I found this vocal version by looking for recordings for one of my students. This is really heavenly. I agree with one of the commenters, this is indeed the highest form of art. Wonderful!
Spot on! The soprano punches each high note, clean and clear. No swooping or screaming. Every member of your choir is amazing, it’s almost like they are cradling the notes deft and sure. Thank you!
When I was in trouble for left my job last year, I took praying and fasting. Jesus gave me another job. Now,I take fasting continually two days every week. I feel more Jesus in my life.
This is the most perfect version I have ever heard and I just keep listening to it. Wonderful talent (as I say to my wife talent never stops) and these young people are absolutely superb. It is without doubt to me total perfection.
This officially is the most beautiful thing I've ever encountered. If I had been there sitting on the floor, I think my heart might have stopped beating forever.
Not sure why I have not found this recording before, but have just discovered it this week. This is, without a doubt, one of the most incredibly pure choral/vocal performances I have ever heard. I was always a huge fan of The Kings Singers for similar reasons. And while not always the same genre of music, also love listening to Celtic Woman (especially the early years). But this performance of this, obviously, stunning choral work is simply amazing and inspirational. Many have commented on the clarity and control of the Sop; obviously I agree, but I am also so very impressed with the balance that is maintained by the group when the Sop is, in fact, at the top of her vocal range. She is supported at just the right dynamic and intensity at just the right moments, and that allows the flute-like quality of her voice in those passages to be enjoyed and appreciated even more. I could put this on a loop and listen all day. Simply Wow!
What a genius, Elgar was. His music never fails to move me. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis. May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord, with your saints in eternity, for you are merciful. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let eternal light shine upon them.
I think that the secret is that he was a voilinist so could explore chording aligned to the human voice but not constrained by the fixed chords of the pianoforte. Just my thoughts as a violinist and a lifelong tenor.
The Soprano 1 is just sublime. Perfect clarity in her voice, the high notes are perfectly in tune but not shrill and she looks stunning as well. Together with the other exceptionally talented singers, this performance is simply out of this world.
Their basics are just incredible ... spectacular intonation and superb rhythmic integrity. The overtones just ring out in that church. Top off the basics with a beautiful musical interpretation and this is pure bliss. I can't imagine how beautiful this must sound live.
Right: Beautiful overtones can be generated in great halls with live acoustics, a group of choristers like Voces with perfect intonation, and the right music. Then one can sometimes hear what sounds like angels harmonizing in higher octaves, giving one the chills.
I love how Andrea (the Soprano) can pull back to a piano dynamic at the end of the song and still hit that high note with such ease and crystal clarity.
How can 90 people not like this? Where are your ears? This is music of the Gods - amazing performance of one of my favourite pieces of music - thanks for sharing.
2% of people are trolls - ugly souls who can see ugliness in absolutely anything. This is a beautiful piece that is beautifully performed by artists who have clearly worked very hard. The performance is also available for free whenever the other 98% wish to share the joy. Unfortunately, the internet allows cowards a voice - I would like to see a troll front up to the group after a performance and criticise their intonation!

Sublime. The pitch and purity of the voices is glorious. I am from Worcestershire, but now live in New Zealand. Elgar was a local lad and this brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank You, VOCES8 I will listen to you often...

No I am NOT CRYING, YOU ARE!!! Beautiful song, amazing voices
The purity of these voices is amazing. I have come back to this so many times for peace and contentment. It is wonderful.
I’m going to request, Lux Aeterna, for my funeral sung by VOCES8. This group elevates my sprit immensely.
Ah, Life - such a precious gift ! Too short, we grow old too fast, the decades fly by . . . and we return to Our Father in Heaven !
Our glee club director always exhorted us to "Sing like men!" and my hat is off to your two wonderful sopranos for holding their own against six guys Singing Like Men.
Thank you!
She nails it shut!
One seldom is so fortunate as to hear something this close to perfection.
When I was in trouble for left my job last year, I took praying and fasting. Jesus gave me another job. Now,I take fasting continually two days every week. I feel more Jesus in my life.
this is..for me at least, the highest form of art. doesn't get any better.thankyou.
Il soprano ha una voce angelica, voci fantastiche.
Andrea Haines - The fairest Rose in England.
This is the most perfect version I have ever heard and I just keep listening to it.
Wonderful talent (as I say to my wife talent never stops) and these young people are absolutely superb.
It is without doubt to me total perfection.
Oh my word that soprano. Wow.
Andrea Haines - The fairest Rose in England.
This officially is the most beautiful thing I've ever encountered. If I had been there sitting on the floor, I think my heart might have stopped beating forever.
Word.
Simply Wow!
Agree: simply, wow.
What a genius, Elgar was. His music never fails to move me.
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
May eternal light shine upon them, O Lord,
with your saints in eternity,
for you are merciful.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and let eternal light shine upon them.
I think that the secret is that he was a voilinist so could explore chording aligned to the human voice but not constrained by the fixed chords of the pianoforte. Just my thoughts as a violinist and a lifelong tenor.
Who wrote the words?
@@johnbishop5316 They are from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass (Mass for the Dead)
Thank you very much for the lyrics. It's indeed an outstanding performance.
@@shawndaly2693 Thanks Shwn. But who scored them for this piece? The man himself?
People - do not attempt without a box of tissues to hand. Absolutely gut wrenchingly beautiful
The Soprano 1 is just sublime. Perfect clarity in her voice, the high notes are perfectly in tune but not shrill and she looks stunning as well. Together with the other exceptionally talented singers, this performance is simply out of this world.
WOW!! Who else gets goosebumps and hair on head and neck stand up listening to this? WOW!!
Me !
This rendition gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Absolutely faultless and so moving.
I don't usually like arrangements but this just gives me almost permanent chills. Absolutely spellbinding.
judetheobscure2 Isn't an original Elgar's version?
judetheobscure2 it is original from Elgar.
@Stephen Turner It's "Nimrod" from the Enigma Variations.
@Stephen Turner the vocal arrangement is not by Elgar. It is by John Cameron.
Sadly, there always seems to be that 2% who dislike everything. Maybe they're the 90 who auditioned but weren't selected.
Because they're out of tune at times and we don't appreciate the singing of every piece they sing with straight tones. Not hard to understand.
Please tell me where they are out of tune.
At which points are they out of tune? Please explain yourself.
Una delle esecuzioni più belle che abbia mai sentito. Purezza di suono e insieme perfetto. Grazie.
Lost my grandma few weeks ago, this song keeps me calm and help me remember the good times we shared together.....I still feel her presence with me....thank you for this piece voce8.
Recently, I shared this piece with a musician friend. He was stunned by it (as am I) and vowed to play it for his grandchildren as an example of what quality means. Thank you, VOCES8.
Nimrod has been a favourite piece of mine for many years. It is a very moving piece of music. This version is simply lovely, wonderful.
Forgot to breathe ...... so beautiful, thank you xx
Not sure how I ran across this, but so glad I did. I just wasn’t prepared for it though. Just simple me wearing my headphones at 11pm …packing my lunch for the next day. And just absolutely overwhelmed with emotion about half way through. You guys brought me to tears. Just… wow. Speechless.
I have been going through all the RUclips recordings by Voces8, and all of them stir my soul.
To the choir - you are utterly wonderful! Thank you so much for these moments of introspective passion.
"introspective passion"
Nice!
Was für eine großartige Leistung! Das berührt alles was die menschliche Seele ausmacht ❤️
Stimmt!
Haunting, ethereal and vast. What a masterpiece Elgar created!
I've got tears in my eyes its so wonderful. It's almost like ascending to heaven.
This is now part of my living will.
Please find some of my friends and family to sing this as I go into the flames.
Just knowing this music exists brings joy and peace to my soul
Sublime. The pitch and purity of the voices is glorious. I am from Worcestershire, but now live in New Zealand. Elgar was a local lad and this brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank You, VOCES8 I will listen to you often...
I can not understand a word of it but it is so beautiful. Absolutely Devine ❤
I cannot stop listening to this. Absolutely sublime.
I feel absolutetely the same-its the best vocal group I can think of. Went miles in Germany to listen live to them
I discovered this about a month ago. It has been my nightly ritual ever since. Exquisite.
Usually, I don't like vocal arrangements of orchestral music, but I make an exception for this one. It's lovely and beautifully performed.
I come to this every time I need to find solace. Thank you Voces8.
Had the absolute pleasure of seeing them in concert!!!!!!!!!Heavenly music!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I ever share the same air, my heart might stop forever.
Just two musical pieces for my funeral. This piece of surrealism, and Judy Collins-Amazing grace. Vocal purity without distraction!
This will forever have me in tears of joy and enlightenment
Me too.
You young ladies and gentlemen are absolutely glorious! Pure and brilliant choral artistry! God Bless You! --The CyberBass Project.
THANK YOU - LIKE CREATURES FROM A HIGHER WORLD YOU DECORATE MY SOUL- A VIBRATIONAL MEDITATION.
A DIVINE PRAYER - A MORE PERFECT !
This is the most acoustically perfect piece of music ever. I want it at my funeral. I listen to it ever week.
Just listened to it again, for probably the 47th time. That final chord gets me every time.
What a beautifully balanced group and the purity of the soprano's notes rising above the group are extraordinary. Lovely harmony....
It is said that compared to the angels singing, our voices are mere animal sounds in comparison to those amazing creatures singing his praises endlessly...truly a moving and emotion invoking truth
This is the pinnacle of vocal performance! So well done. And the tall burnette's clear voice....heart melting!! Well, all of them are just equally as amazing. I randomly found this and so glad I did... I'm one of your new fans
The blend of their voices are just really amazing! The basses are just god tier
Oh my god. At 2:15 when the basses come out it's like an elegance I've never experienced before.
My favorite singing environment has always been with a small group of people who are sensitive to blend and balance and want to hear as much as be heard. In short, who don't have to be opera stars. This is just such a group.
The most perfect 'Nimrod'. This recording should be mandatory at every British Legion Remembrance service at the Albert Hall - just perfect.
287 thumbs down???! What is wrong with you??? This is pure Heaven on Earth. Even demons would cry at such Angelic sweetness, perfect harmony and sublime beauty. Thank you for bringing a slice of Home to this Earth for us Earth bound Angels weeping for the Home hearth. I will listen to this morning and night from now on. To sleep well and to set myself up for a wonderful day. Most of all, to keep fresh in my heart the feeling of Home so that I may do my bit in co creating Heaven upon this Earth even more fervently than I already have been. This truly is a masterpiece and your voices weave worlds together within and without. I am a Healer and harmonious music is the greatest Healer of all. This good Earth needs you all so much! Thank you for being and for doing what you are meant to!!! 💜💜💜
Céleste et divin... Un régal pour l'âme...
Exquisite! (didn't even know there was a hymn to the same tune as Nimrod from Enigma Variations.) sublime! wonderful!
