The pair gleefully gallivanted across the stage as a confident Johnson wooed the naive, innocent Keenan-Bolger through a charmingly updated romp through the classic.
Broadway Backwards, the annual Broadway extravaganza celebrating the LGBTQ+ community through the great songs of musical theater, returns to Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on Monday, March 13, 2023. The beloved evening and its star-studded cast will embrace love and self-expression in true Broadway fashion.

The 12th Annual Broadway Backwards on March, 13, 2017, where men sing songs intended for women and vice versa without changing pronouns, shattered fundraising records, bringing in an impressive $522,870 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City.
Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley wrote and directed this year’s show. It featured choreography by Bartley, Penny Ayn Maas, Christopher Rice and Adam Roberts. Mary-Mitchell Campbell served as music supervisor and Laura Bergquist was music director. The creative team included lighting designer Carolyn Wong, costume designers Jess Gersz and Vanessa Leuck and sound designer Matthew Kraus. The production stage managers were Kaleigh Bernier and Rachael Gass.

Why would they put a gay subplot in? I support gay rights and all, but that’s was set in 1939. In Austria, which was controlled by the Nazi’s, who were extremely against gays. Realistically there shouldn’t be a gay subplot (also it goes against the true story). The Sound Of Music never needs to be remade.

There were gay men in concentration camps and gay partnerships have been documented, just because a group is against another doesn't mean they didn't exist they just weren't public about it. It's a fun idea. Also the Sound of Music goes against the true story anyway given the children's ages were much different as was Maria's and Maria wasn't in love with the Captain when she married him. The whole escape plan didn't happen either so...
