My grandfather was on Preston Tucker’s design team! Thanks for showing this video!!!
Was he in the movie too?
What happened to Tucker was one of the biggest atrocities in the automotive world.
M3RKD0G3 Derp Reread my comment, then realize your mistake.
Actually, the production version of the car didn't have seatbelts. Preston Tucker thought they would make people think his car was unsafe.
But Tucker had no gearboxes, they were assembled from CORD scrap.
Great car why is there not an legal law Investigation on the way they put Tucker out of business absoluteanywhere.com
And now we’re stuck with Ford gm and Chrysler.
Jay, give us an episode specific to Tucker! Thanks for offering great programming for those that appreciate American motordom.
Amazing. I would love to see Jay drive this, but I know with the rarity and value of these cars that might not be possible.
Well he has driven much rarer, and much more expensive cars so it's possible even 7 years later
Yeah, the tuckers now run for about 3 billion
@@ultimatesans5113 Which means you can't even really insure it for use on public roads. Even classic car insurance where you can only do a couple thousand miles a year is pricey, depending on the model. And even *then*, if your Tucker gets T-Boned, it's never getting fixed.
It's a sad reality, but you should never drive (in public, without a security team) any car that you wouldn't sell.
I imagine Jay has a caravan of security, possibly police around, whenever he drives his rare stuff.
The #1 car in my Holy Grail of cars list! Thanks for sharing Jay!
Jay looks different when he doesn't wear denim.
Ha. Ha ha ha ha ja that’s a good one.
I bet you say that to everyone you don't have your lips wrapped around.
And his voice sounds different, or is it just me.
Jay really out did himself with this "jays
Leno garage" I'm really beginning to think his comedy was only to fund his first love cars
There's only one Tucker unit in Brazil. It's located in Caçapava, SP, and it is currently being restored by some enthusiasts after some decades of abandon and forsaking in a former museum being kept by Roberto Lee in the 1970's. After his death, the museum was abandoned, with several rare cars (incluing Tucker and a Graham Paige Holywood, among others) being destroyed by vandals.
+Joao Goncalves Yup, that sounds like Brazil...
The movie TUCKER starring Jeff Bridges, is one of my favorite films. It touches my heart and inspires me...So I just had to see if you owned one Jay...I'm so happy that you do...I hope to someday meet you, and ride in a Tucker car...And, GOD willing, achieve the level of success to own one too...Until then, boy am I broke! ... Have a nice day Jay !... :)
Just remember that it is a movie, and not necessarily reflective of reality.
There is some question as to whether he really could have built the cars, given his thin and unorthodox financing. They did weird things like selling the radios of the cars to people who signed contracts to buy the cars (I guess they bought 'em one piece at a time, like Johnny Cash) and also selling dealer franchises. He was severely underfunded.
Was it a stock scam? Maybe. One of his associates was previously convicted for stock fraud. That was the big ding against him - that the entire thing was a con of some sort. Maybe yes, maybe he was just duped.
Frankly, I think the point is moot. The car wasn't as revolutionary as people make it out to be. Rear Engine? Air Cooled? VW was already doing that.
In retrospect, it really wasn't a great car - and it would have been staggeringly expensive to build (and it was enormous!). But in the postwar era, where shortages of materials kept car supplies low, people latched onto anything that seemed new (most car makers were still selling warmed-over 1942 models at that point). So there was a lot of buzz about it - mostly because Tucker was a bit of a self-promoter.
I am not anti-Tucker. Just it seems to me the whole thing is really overblown, in terms of this "little guy versus the big-3". A compelling David-and-Goliath story, but maybe more folklore than fact. I doubt anyone at GM, Ford, or Chrysler lost any sleep over Preston Tucker. Just another dreamer with a wild idea and no practical way to implement it.
Even if he could have succeeded in making the car (and that would have required about 100X the capital he had) he would have likely gone the way of Packard, Kaiser, Studebaker, et al., by the mid-1950's.
Just my take on it. I wouldn't want a Tucker in my garage, if I was looking for a collector car.
***** You must be so much fun at parties.
Pete Hudo
You must not get invited to them. Take your H8 elsewhere. If you can't handle an intellectual discussion go back to Twitter.
***** Though I cannot prove it...I have no doubt that Coppolla's take on this story is an accurate one...And that Preston Tucker was not a charlatan...But a Free Enterprise Inventor, Inspiration, and Visionary...
John Robert Cruz Don't listen to him. He's probably one of those people that will find a negative side to everything. I like the movie too and would love to have one in my garage..I don't care if the movie is not accurate, it's touching and inspiring and that's all that matters.
Apparently the Big 3 didn't like the prospect of Tucker giving them any competition.
Cliff Yablonski
Watch the movie. It follows the actual accounts very accurately. The big three were the major cause of the company's failure, NOT the design.
Cliff Yablonski
The movie reflects the tone of what the environment was at the time, and accurately so. I was in my twenties when this car was introduced, and can attest to the accuracy and inaccuracies from firsthand knowledge. Can you?
Cliff Yablonski
Well if your source is the internet, it must be true.
Cliff Yablonski
Must be true if it has citations and stuff.
Cliff Yablonski
There's no conversation. There's just one at the scene answering one who read about it.
My father owed Tucker 45 and is now recognized as the original owner. His car is in a museum in Australia and they will be publishing a blurb about him and his ancestry every month. My father may become a cult figure since there is little documentation about those owner pioneers Let me know if this interests you
Lynn Keller is he very wealthy ?
That is really awesome.
I have a friend of mine who's uncle bought a Tucker after he got out of the army and it is now in the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
Thank you very much for sharing your story.
👍🙋♂️🤜🤛😺🐈😊
last week for the 100 year anniversary I talked my nephew into bringing Tucker #8 to Omaha (the epicenter of LH) at john sutters mill (1847) he drove number 8 down dodge street LH in Omaha, Nebraska ... Omaha also has the only hupmobile dealership intact ... and three miles of original brick road .. on the third day he let me drive it .. helicopter engine and gas tank in the back ... flat 6 ... took off like a speedboat ... kind of a lift in the front from all the weight in the rear INCREDIBLE
Please note: to do more on the Tucker car, meticulous restoration, including sharing the wonderful Tucker history. Thank you!:-)
P.S. Preston Thomas Tucker spent his childhood around mechanics' garages and used car lots. He worked as an office boy at Cadillac, a policeman in Lincoln Park, and even worked for a time at Ford Motor Company. His car was hailed as "the first completely new car in fifty years. " Indeed, the advertising promised that it was "the car you have been waiting for." Cheers!
I saw one, light blue, in a garage in Union Nebraska back in the early '90's. Being a Corvair owner at the time, I was intrigued by Tucker as well. Truly a beautiful car and ahead of its time.
I saw one at the auto museum in Tallahasse, FL. It was emerald green. The dog in the pic is my beagle Tucker named after Preston Tucker.
Funny that you posted this video today because just this morning, while introducing me roommate to Cords, I explained the innovations of car manufacturers of that era & Tucker obviously came into the topic. Thank you for this pleasant surprise, Jay! I'll show this video to my roomie so he can have a better understanding!
The headlight may be needlessly elaborate but the idea was a good one. One of the features I really liked on my Mark VIII were the turning lamps.
Tuckers are so awesome!!
I got to see several up close in front of the San Francisco city hall when they made the movie, "Tucker." They are quite beautiful.
In my HS deca class my teacher had showed us the movie starring Jeff Bridges playing Preston Tucker and ever since then I've wanted to see the Tucker Torpedo up close because I believe that it is one beautiful vehicle. Thank you for sharing this with us all Mr. Leno. 🙏
Mr. Preston Tucker is laid to rest several hundred feet from my grandparents grave at Michigan Memorial Cemetery, Flat Rock, MI. When visiting my grandparents grave I always mosey on over to see Mr. Tucker’s resting spot.
Thank God for people who love cars and RICH people who restore & preserve the history of the automobile which is a big part of the American Dream & American Freedom.
Thank you again, Jay.
Finally theres a seperate video here about one of my favourite cars, the Tucker 48 Torpedo.
Ah Yes ! The Tucker ! Damned nice car for the time it first hit the road.. No slouch for today either, there are still lots of cars with rain rails. It must really take lots of fitting to seal a door properly. Thanks Jay, I always liked the tucker since seeing the movie as a teen.
This car has been my dream car since I was 10.
I live in Tucker, Georgia. Our local home build place (Cofer Brothers) had a Tucker with a tiger on top (don't know if it was 'glass or what). The HS team was the Tucker Tigers. The cat covered the whole top of the car! I have no Idea what happened to the car but it has been gone for years.
Thats a very rare car.
Beautiful looking car! Thanks for posting.
The AACA museum in Hershey PA has 3 of them and some prototype chassis and engine parts set up in a recreated Tucker dealer show room.....it is totally worth the trip to see. Neat cars for sure
I was saying to myself Jay Leno has to have a Tucker. One of the most awesome cars, if not the most amazing automobile creator, manufacturer.
how can leno have so many cars. and there in the best of shape . got to be the best collection on earth
My god so beautiful...you can't stop to look at it...My dream car
Had the privilege of seeing an original at the Gilmore Car Museum in Michigan. Beautiful cars.
Just watched the "Tucker" movie in my Auto class at school, amazing story, amazing car ahead of its time
My grandfather was an original investor in Tucker, Paul Duhaime. I remember him having 2 of them in his backyard under tarps in the early 70's
I saw this car at the San Francisco Moscone Center car show last November!
What a fascinating, fantastic and original automobile...
My uncle had a cord and it was great.didn't know that Tucker used some cord ideas. Dash looks like a cord. I always liked that Tucker.what a car. In a Studebaker fan also.
The funny thing is Tucker’s turning Headlight actually made it’s way into some more modern luxury cars like Range Rovers and BMWs
So ironically enough this car predicted the future
Wow tucker was way ahead of its time with certain function/design features cool stuff
I've never seen a Tucker. Very rare!
Somehow reminds me of 1938 Tatra T87.
Back in 1968 my dad was a subscriber to an old cars magazine. On the cover each month was a featured make & model. One day he asked me, what do you think of this car? I said I'd never seen one like that! He through the magazine on the kitchen table & said read the article & learn something!! I wasn't much on reading in those days, thus a C & D student. So I sat down & learned the Tucker story. Couldn't believe it when I took the family to Zunkers car museum in Holland Michigan in about 1988. I saw a flat 6 on the floor & asked why they had a corvair engine on the floor. This little white haired old lady giving the tour said " That's not a corvair engine, it has a water jacket". To wit I jerked my head towards her & said " don't tell me you got a Tucker somewhere around here"? She asked me, with a twinkle in Her eye. Do you want to see it? I said does a dog have flees? You bet. She unclipped one of those big velvet ropes to let me & my family through. She said we are trying to restore it. There in a back room sat a light blue Tucker 48. I felt like I was on hollowed ground. Original paint, slightly faded. The motor out & on the floor out where I saw it. Looked like 95% of it was there. I learned about 2 years later, that they sold it. Was so excited when the movie came out & the owners got to drive their Tuckers on the movie set & have them featured in the movie. A lot of his innovations have come to pass, like padded dash, the doors curving into the roof line, ect.
It is hard restoring a car when there were only 47 that were made! Kuds to that dude.
Man I love that car. It's a massive tragedy that the American people did not take to this car in its day. Ya know, I've watched your late night show and yeah it's ok but Jay, this is your passion and it shows man. The way you adopt the ultra high teck for the shop but have a dedication to classic machines is the same way I deal with this stuff. Stay true to the original design and intent but do it the modern way. Inspiring brother.
This is the greatest car ever made, this is the best car ever made. It's like a Porsche meets a Mercedes meets a Cadillac.
Wow that car is amazing. Beautiful.
Love that car. I need to watch the movie again.
I was always wondering if they would have done a video on this car. Glad they did, but would have been nice if it were longer.
Thanks for the Video!!
Absolutely gorgeous car.
Beautiful looking car. Love the colour too. Anyone know what the colour actually is? To my eyes its a shade of copper but thats an injustice.
"actually"
@@hijodelaisla275 Define?
@@Dahliaman1 Anyone know what the colour is? OR Anyone know what the colour is called? "Actually," as popular as it is, is useless here.
@@hijodelaisla275 'Anyone' or 'Everyone' now that is the question ummmmmmmm!
@@Dahliaman1 Light a candle for the colorblind.
I glad Jays not stuck up and hides his cars like some people. Good luck Jay.
My 1st job was with the Franklin Engine Company in Liverpool NY!
Jay, when are you going to take a Tucker out for a ride? That would be great!
Tucker: A Man and his dream
Yeah great movie.
One of the best American cars ever made! LOVE it & im British
Tucker was a genie: far beyond of his time!
Jay, I love these videos and get excited whenever I see a new one uploaded! I'm sorry that NBC is pushing you out, but you will find something else even better! Car show maybe???
The 3rd headlight was Tuckers idea, stating that it was needed to see where you were going in making turns and curves at night. A great idea that the Auto builders still refuse to use...I drive a 2019 Dodge (2 headlights) and when making turns in a dark area, I can't see where I'm turning very well.
Gorgeous.
great car always loved it
A technologically advanced car that was only produced in limited numbers because of controversy surrounding the company owners? It's like the proto-DeLorean!
Best Car Ever !!!
Great description on the car
Beautiful car and sweet
Tucker 1948,uma Historia,uma Lenda,um Mito *****
one came up for sale near where i live a few years ago. restoration had been started started, but it was a long, long way from being done and did not run. asking price was $5,000,000.
They have one at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. The placard says Tucker folded because of financial difficulties, difficulties that Ford and GM fabricated!
Wow cool
I am sure Jay has cars as rare as this that he has driven. Problem is,if he doesn't own one very few people would let anyone drive it. That's one thing I like about Jay,he will drive anything he owns & I admire that. These old cars were built to run. Let them run on occasion.
My dream car.
I just got back from Harrisburg, Marcum auction, nothing like a Tucker there
This car is awesome. It was way ahead of its time. It's also in mafia 2
very clean ride
work of art!! =)
I really want to see a Tucker up close and personal one day. The only problem is that the closest ones to me are about 2 and a half hours away in Huntingdon, PA :/
I'd an arm and a leg to ride in one of those they are so awesome!
I watched them make the Tucker movie, on locations in Oakland, California.
They had a bunch of the tuckers in a parking lot, so I checked them out.
I saw them doing a driving scene, where the car was on a low trailer, with the windshield removed.
The camera and director were on the truck towing it and Jeff Bridges was inside wearing a fedora.
I noticed a street cop with a strange cut uniform and I then realized, that he was an actor, in the street scene.
Never herd of them till now.
Sweet looking car. I've been interested in the Tucker car since I first saw the movie, starring Jeff Bridges.
They were pretty awesome for their time
Happy birthday Jay!
Beautiful classic!!!
Jay, if you are really about special cars you need to have this car featured: the Vector W8 (Or W2). American build hypercar from the 80s/90s that makes a Ferrari or Lamborghini look dull.
This is the first video of Jay's without saying, hey i have countach but i removed the wing!
The movie Tucker was how a gen x knows about these
thanks for Tucker!
car of tomorrow today
Cool ending.
I want to see more on this car.
oh my god I'm a fan of rare and hard to find classics like the tucker and I'm glad you did this one jay. thanks.
Walker Rocket from the game Mafia 2 :) Tucker initially planned to install an innovative engine with hydraulic actuated valves and no transmission (just torque converters), but they failed to make it reliable enough...
Maybe Jay will get himself a Tatra 603, which was the inspiration for the Tucker.
youtube > Stastnou cestu Tatra 603
Greatest car of all time...
Very, very 😎 cool car.
wish it was longer
Super Impressive....
Please do more videos on the tucker its a fascinating automobile with a wonderful story, thanks for this but if possible make a more in depth review of the car!
One of the the ones made is in Yellow Springs, Ohio , at least it was about 15 years ago .
That was cool, but I wish it would have been longer and showed more of the car.
That car was way ahead of its time! For shure, and the reason the goverment came down on him, is because he was an inovator and his cars where way better in quality and way safer than the big 3 companies. Thats why!
You are 100% on the money.
Over the years (and from the movie) the legend is bigger and a much better story than reality. It was a good design for it's day, and had some decent features (of course it DIDN'T have seat belts, disc brakes, or fuel injection).. The bottom line is that Tucker was in WAY over his head and was WAY short of raising the kind of money he needed to get this car into production.
The Tucker reminds me of the modern day Elio and what is happening to that Company.
