Have seen cheap trick 7 times. Robin can scream and shred on vocals for almost 2 hours, and then still hit the softest, purest high notes like a little girl. That gentleman is not of this earth. And Hey, how come there's Buster Keaton films with better resolution than 1978 concert footage? 😂
Honestly this song one of the best songs ever and it has been for like the past year since I first discovered it and I would absolutely love to see it live but I can't cus I'm only 15 and I have no money to pay for anything and i cant drive myself and my friend there
Classic edition of Zanders vocals on his song, Nielson blasting an Explorer to its limits, Toms leading Bass from the start and Bunn E keeping the original BEAT of them in BLACK AND WHITE
wow - they were just SO good. so RAW. so FUNNY. so EDGY. and Robin is so gifted. It seems so few of us actually GOT IT back then. And a lot of us still follow BECAUSE we got it THEN and hang in there NOW for the new songs that tip the scale. Thanks for posting this one, Wow. nice. classic.
They definitely rock this cover version of the Terry Reid song. And I really dig their first album. This band is multi-talented and definitely deserve to be in the Rock & Roll hall of fame. If you just listen to their body of work from the first album on they really put out some great material and are worthy for induction.
Man, Tom's 10 string quad bass sounds so incredibly powerful here. This is the bass guitar that Tom was using when I first saw Cheap Trick in 1977 when they opened for KISS on their first US major tour. Incredible band and a very talented bass player!!!!!!!!!!!! 😃👍👍👍
Cheap Trick soundboard boots rule!! I got a whole slew of them from the late 70's and early 80's...they rock. I as well listened to them more than the proper records.
You guys rock for puttin up all this stuff!I got it back then and still do...as well as CT themselves still get it.its funny but 'few' in CTs case means millions world wide.
Thanks again for all these treasures. I agree with you about this song. But the other version from Japan (1992)is, from my point of view, better. Once again, the proof that Cheap Trick stay great despite years.
This has to be from when they opened for Blue Oyster Cult, on the Spectres tour. I grew up in Houston, but didn’t get to see them until ‘79 on the Dream Police tour. However, it was right after this show here that I first found out about Cheap Trick from my aunt, who was there. She very excitedly went on and on about this awesome (then) new and ‘unknown’ band, who blew BOC off the stage, and BOC was one of her favorite bands at the time. I was only 9 years old back then, but when she played me their record (first album) a few days later, I was well and properly hooked... a good two years before Budokan blew up and made them huge. I later met a few others who were at this show, and they all unanimously shared my aunt’s opinion.
Real nice bass solo, Tom. I love that bass and you. I hope he kept that bass as a collection in his house. I've always loved this song. I remember it was the first song I heard on my brother's 8-track from Cheap Trick's 1st albumn. Then I heard Mandecello and I was blown away. Thanks for the video. Nice to know that people videotaped them in concert before they made it big over in Japan.
Yup. I saw them on that very same tour in 1977 a month earlier. August 16th 1977 opening for KISS in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. Great show. I had just bought the In Color album, and became a big CT fan for life after that concert!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
I think it's so short sighted to refer to Tom as a "rhythm guitarist"....it's almost an insult. Clearly it's a bass..doing what bass does..hold down and guide the tune..and he does that rather well I think. And this is the man responsible for what we now know as the 12 string bass guitar. I'd be lost today if I didn't have one and use it. Such an overlooked bass player...ain't that a shame.
Well said. I’m a bass player as well, and even though I don’t play a 12-string, I at least have always recognized and admired Tom’s innovation in that area. He has always been the most overlooked member of the band, which really is a shame since not only is he a solid and innovative bassist with a truly unique (if not ‘flashy’) style, but he also co-wrote so many of their classic songs. There’s a clip floating around the youtubes of a 1979 live performance on the German TV show “Rockpalast”, where the mix is such that the bass really stands out. A headache for audiophiles perhaps, but at least you can really hear Tom shine on that one. Definitely one of the most overlooked bass players ever.
Wow, I love it. Where do you get these older clips? I've searched and searched in the past for older CT songs played live to no avail. I'm glad somebody finally posted some! Thanks.
The lyrics.... Help me out here... "Just getting lost... I can't find my mind" What's the next line? "{something} things, I don't know" What is it? Most of the lyrics sites don't seem to have it right.
Nice strong performance, too bad the sound was not better! Wish they would release the "Rock Goes to College" series. I remember seeing them on that in 1980
Interestingly the albums Terry Reid recorded with Mickie Most producing are his best and most memorable works...so it's doubtful whether he would have had a "better" solo career..
Here is the Terry Reid version, which is where Cheap Trick picked up this tune. Reid declining Jimmy Page's offer to join what became Led Zeppelin might be seen in retrospect as an unfortunate move on his part, but he was already into his solo career and getting rave reviews. And he found Robert Plant for Page. ruclips.net/video/pv1zu79377A/видео.html
The bass in this video was the prototype Hamer short scale 10 string quad bass. Tom's Hamer B12 was used the following year in 79 on the Dream Police Tour.
I seen this show at the Winnipeg Arena on Sept 1976. They were back up for KISS Love Gun Tour a F'n WICKED show.I liked CHEAP TRICK's set better!!!! Like Trickey said They are rock n roll!!!!
The1EricStar You are right, this was 1977 that they toured with KISS, promoting their newly released eponymous LP. In 1976 the band was in the studio working on their first album AND still playing Illinois gigs - like The Red Lion on Center St., Bloomington Illinois - where I saw them play earlier in ‘76! I LOVE THIS VIDEO, because it perfectly captures that year in time for me of Cheap Trick, young, effing amazing, loud, raw and fresh! We Illinois kids KNEW these Rockford lads were destined for greatness, about to EXPLODE... Damn, wish we’d had frickin’ IPHONES back then, the pictures WE woulda taken... :-)
Ever heard Seed Of Memory? Or River?... thought so. Oh, and BTW it was MM who shelved some of the best songs - Penny and Summer Sequence are just two examples. Terry did fine work DESPITE MM - not thanks to him. His lack of understanding and interest in Terry was abundantly obvious as the original production was atrocious. Even digital remastering can't rescue the sound 100%.
I agree and disagree. Terry would have had a much better solo career were it not for his most unhelpful producer, Mickie Most. So - signing that exclusive contract with MM was the bad move. But Terry was only 18 and nudged by Graham Nash...
I have 'em and they are not nearly as good as the Mickie Most produced albums. Why do other artists always pick these 2 to cover songs from. ?CheapTrick, CSN,and The Raconteurs.. Becasuse they are the BEST SONGS.. I have not heard any covers of songs from The River or Seed Of Memory or any other Terry Reid release. BTW Mickie Most also produced 2 of the most influential rock albums ever Truth & Beck-Ola by the Jeff Beck Group..Great production values on bothe ever heard of them ? Probably not
After watching this video, I have no argument that Cheap Trick deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Not even words can explain how freaking jealous I am of you rn 😒
Cool Beans!!!!

Zander sounds absolutely incredible.
This great band did this great rockin song better
than anyone...thanks for posting a great band
doing what they do best...kickin out the jams
Love it! Rick looks like a demented school teacher and as for Robin Zander he was very 🔥 even back then! His voice is magnificent.
Man- I just love this song. Love that whole album, but this is such a killer song. And a really great band!
Same 💖

Robin!!! A hurricane on the vocals😂😂😂
Mega thanks for putting this on. It's absolutely incredible from the one of the effin' greatest bands of all time.
4-, 8-, 10-, 12-string basses, it doesn't matter. Tom Peterssen's bass work will rip your lungs out!
I agree!!!
Me too. Tom gives Cheap Trick their signature sound live!!!!!! 👍🎸
This is a stunning cover of a great tune! The original doesn't even approximate the fury that Cheap Trick brought it. Awesome.
Great performance, no better live band, and great choice of a Terry Reid song.
Cheap Trick soundboard boots rule!! I got a whole slew of them from the late 70's and early 80's...they rock. I as well listened to them more than the proper records.
The greatest band. Love them. Wow Robin is hot too.

1. Robin looks about 15,
2. Tom is a GOD!
that is all.
Their energy is over the top. Love this band!

speak now or forever hold your peace great cover of terry reid and great performance.
Real nice bass solo, Tom.

Absolutely beautiful!
Wow!, this is a classic from the 1st! Thank You sooooo much. . .
Thanks for posting this.
saw them in 77 in suburban chicago...... never been the same...it was in the student center of a local jr college....
saw them in 77 in suburban chicago...... never been the same...it was in teh student center of a local jr college....
Awesome cover version!
This is when they were opening for Kiss at the Summit Arena in September of 1977. Awesome show!
Yup. I saw them on that very same tour in 1977 a month earlier. August 16th 1977 opening for KISS in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. Great show. I had just bought the In Color album, and became a big CT fan for life after that concert!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
This is the tune they opened their set with the 1st time I saw them- in '77, opening up for Nugent.
Great tune from the best fuckin' band around. Period.
Thanks so much for sharing this.
i love this song
That was so f'in great.

I totally agree with you 100%

Robin is the rhythm guitarist. Tom is Bass. Every member of this band is a virtuoso in their own right.
Like it a lot
phenom!!!!
wow, tim go go...
The song was written by Terry Reid. So yes, it is a cover.
Overdubbing is basically adding additional tracks (back-up vocals, keyboards, extra guitars etc..) to the basic tracks.
10-string Bass !! Rare♪
cool.
WHO WOULD THUMBS DOWN THIS??
Journey fans?
Wow, I love it. Where do you get these older clips? I've searched and searched in the past for older CT songs played live to no avail. I'm glad somebody finally posted some! Thanks.
Robin is so hot!!!!
I have always considered Rick the lead guitarist, Tom the bass guitarist, and Robin the rhythm guitarist.
@heyzarling Indeed!

Fred Nugent.

But this was Zepplin, come on that was in hindsite not a good move.
Terry turned down Jimmy Page, an offer to be in his new group....with John Paul Jones. Bad move. Great singer.
