I just passed my oral board. The process was this: 25 minute written essay based on 1 of 3 questions (of your choosing). 1. What are the most important attributes you have from your education? 2. What are the....(same as above)... from your work experience? OR 3. Who is one person you respect most in your life and why?
After that the officers will read the essay and discuss while you are sitting in another room. Finally they bring you back. Greet them (Good morning/afternoon) by name and shake their hands if they stand up to greet you. Stand by your chair and wait for permission to sit. Finally, I had 15 questions (5 questions per officer) and 30 minutes to complete the interview. Here are some of the questions I remember...
    1. Why do you want to become a police officer?
    2. Why do you want to join our agency?
    3. What do you think a shift would look like for our department’s police officers? What do you think are some situations you would have to respond to?
    4. Your partner and you respond to a break in at a store. While waiting, your partner swipes a candy bar and doesn’t pay for it. What do you do?
    5. One of the police officers in your agency was called to a scene by a woman complaining of reckless drivers in the area. The police officer finished his shift without making a report and is now off-duty. The woman is angry that no one has been arrested. What do you do?
    6. What are important qualities every police officer should have? Why should they have these qualities? - I answered integrity #1 (can't help them if they aren't honest) critical thinking skills next, and an aura of fairness (one of the core values of the department is fairness).
    7. What are your most important attributes? How has these attributes impacted your life?
    8. List the last time you lost your temper or got angry. How did the situation unfold? How did you resolve the situation?
    9. What is your greatest weakness? Why? How has this impacted your life?
    10. What is one reason that would disqualify you from joining our agency? Why would this disqualify you?
I think the last question is really the one that helped me pass. If I was doing good on the previous questions, I didn't feel like it. The officer read the question and I sat in my chair in thought for 5 seconds or so and looked each one of them in the eye. "I don't think there is a single reason that I wouldn't be able to join this department or that would disqualify me. Instead, what I will say is 3 reasons you SHOULD hire me over the rest. 1. is my mindself for service. This is evidenced by my work experience in customer related jobs working for DoorDash, T-Mobile and Farmers Insurance. I want to serve and make other people's lives better. 2. is my grit and drive. Any one of my references, roomates, or bosses will tell you that when I put my mind to succeed at something, it doesn't matter how long it takes to complete it. I will eventually get it done. 3. Finally, is going to be the support from my family. As strange as that sounds, I truly believe this is my strongest reason you should hire me. My family (in my case, wife and 2 month old baby girl) has and will continue to support me every step of the way. Everything I do is going to be a sacrifice for them, and they will have to make sacrifices for me, but in doing so I will be ENSURED to have a healthy and long career in law enforcement. They are the solid foundation that I stand on, so that way I can easily face any hardships, struggles, and sacrifices."
Lastly, end it good, leave a good impression and there's no need to ask questions (for me personally at least). I think if you do your research with the department, it's there already. Give firm handshakes and wish them a good rest of their day.

I’m currently 20 years old and have a newfound respect for police officers and public service in general. I want to protect and serve my community on a local level. I have matured a lot since High school and am grateful for my current warehouse job but I want to Become a Leo because I know In these times of chaos this county needs young men and women to protect and be a positive influence

I put out a handful of applications. I have completed 2 physicals and 2 physical fitness tests.
The first place which was a Sheriff's Office i got "Non-selected" probably a week after the interview.
The second place which was a college Police department was kind of unique. We did the physical and fitness test and then they emailed us the background questionnaire which was extensive. They said there wasn't going to be a formal interview but said when turning thing in in person to conduct yourself as if you're going to an interview. So with them i complete the questionnaire. Unfortunately 4 days later which was a Tuesday (i submitted it that Saturday night) i was already told that there would "not process my application at this time" Neither tome i didn't get a reason on the notices or a response after followup.
Now a third agency which is a public transit agency after 2 months sent me an email with the fitness test date. So now i have another chance
I'm also sending in a paper application to a township police department this week as well.

So I'm in the application process for a local department and I am filling out the personal history form at the moment. How big of a deal is it if I can't remember specific dates of when I started and left a job? Im talking about jobs I had back in 2015 and 2016 at grocery stores. I have tried to contact HR multiple times to get the exact date, but I have had no luck.

So for me there were several things I didn't have all the info for but I explained in detail steps I took to at least try and get it to show I put in a good faith effort and that I am not trying to hide anything. Just make sure you make your investigators job as easy as possible. I had so much detail in mine he had 0 issues whatsoever with my background check.

If it’s not prescribed for a good reason then it might. A good amount of departments disqualify you if you take steroids
