250 vs 300 vs 400 Nits Brightness in Laptop / Monitor? How bright screen do you need?

- One of the most important things to look at when getting a laptop is the brightness level of the screen. But how bright do you actually need it to be? In this video I talk about my experiences of that and do a bit of side by side comparisons (although these are very hard to showcase in a detailed way).
Please also watch the glossy / matte comparison for some more insights on the topic: • Matte vs Glossy Monito...

Great vid! I've never seen anyone talk about this before despite how important it is
Thank you! Same! At least not in a focused / dedicated way.

Thanks for the info. I have been out of the loop on purchasing new hardware for a bit. It's been a while since I needed make my own decision on what laptop to buy (my previous laptops were provided by my employer, and I had little to no input on what I received). Now that I am looking to purchase on my own device again, I needed help. Your video was a very straight forward explanation of NITS, and is helping me make a well informed decision on what to look for in screen brightness. I have watched several other videos that you have posted, and all have been very helpful. Thank You for your in depth explanations!
This dudes videos have been the most clutch for shopping for a new laptop during the holidays. TYSM!

Thank you for these extra steps in the comparison . Perfect video

I'm thinking of buying a monitor for my WFH setup, and this video is really very helpful for me.
Thanks for making such a detailed video.
That's great! Glad to be able to help! :)
Very informative. Thank you.
Finally a very complete discussion about screen brightness , and laptop selection . I subscribe to all your points except one :
My style of work with a laptop indoors does NOT require to cranck the brightness all the way up ,as it will hurt my eyes. Just the minimum amount ( subjective as it may be ) to see it comfortable , have a decent compromise of battery power left vs screen energy consumption.
But outdoors use ... thats another story . One needs all the nits you can have ( Cd/square m). So when choosing my next purchase , I will definitely look out for over 400 Nits or more .
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I'm not sure I said I want to crank the brightness up indoors? I don't do it at least :D
Good choice. I see you have a brain 🧠

W2Test Tech,
Thank you so much for putting this content out, there really isn't much on this subject.
A little bit of feedback..
For a 11min video. There was only around 60-90 seconds of demotrating the differences. I'd of liked to seen more camera shots of the different screens, maybe in different light conditions? I do feel a slightly wider camera angle would help your audience connect with you better as they can see your body language and gesters. Also maybe some chapters too BUT overall - super clean edit and your audio is very good!!!😄
Yes that's good feedback! Thank you :)
Thanks for the review

Great Video! I would love to hear your opinion about display brightness for gaming. Some games I think require higher brightness.
great review thank u
Glad you like it! :)
I just answered this question empirically as I started to watch the video. I bought a claimed 500 nit USB 15.6 inch portable monitor and thought, "Gee it isn't as bright as I thought it would be." So I searched RUclips and came here. I was fiddling with the brightness adjustment and looking at the screen for a minute or so, and when I looked back up at this video on my regular laptop monitor (280 nits), I thought, "What happened to it? It's so dark now." I'm in a room with northern exposure facing sliding glass doors (about 9 feet away) on an overcast day. 500 nits isn't too bright for me, but I'm taking it down from 10 (max) to 8.
I bought my very first PC back in December 1998. It came with a 17 inch CRT monitor (15 inch monitors were more common back then). Anyway, after a couple of years or so, my monitor wouldn't go bright enough. It was especially irksome when playing games.
I eventually ordered a new monitor. A big one, I think it might have been 19 inches, but still a CRT. I was playing Wolfenstein at the time it was delivered. When I switched to my new monitor, I couldn't believe how transformed the computer game environment looked. I was in a room that I thought was dark. Not on my new monitor it wasn't!
Anyway, if I buy a new PC monitor (thinking about an IPS, matte screen and 250 cd/m2 max brightness), would it get less bright over time or was this just a detraction of CRT monitors? I don't like my monitor to be bright at all. On the other hand, I do need to be able to see what's on the screen!
It's understand able for me who not know much about it. You describe it very good. Thanks and keep it up👍🏻
That's great! Exactly what I want to achieve! :)
My Samsung screen is 250 nits on paper, but I keep the brightness on 65%. I believe the color settings such as gamma also plays a massive role.
on a day to day basis is 250 nits good enough?
Maybe you could help me with this

I also love 400n!
great subject man. maybe also next time you can use middle, low, and high brightness comparing the three and maybe add 500 nits like macbook pro 2020

Hi, I have dell u2212hmc monitor. When I Power on, from the centre small vertical yellow lines moving left to right. Shades of black thick and thin lines Horizontally.Except Power button if I press any of the monitor buttons that side shows vertical yello lines(No information, Only yellow lines). Sometimes only for few seconds works fine.ie, after the power on, it shows "No vga connection found" which is normal.
Well darn... the upcoming Asus 4K 32" 240hz QD-OLED monitor was said to only support up to 250 nits. It uses a semi-glossy panel.
nice video!thanks
Thank you! :)
I have a legion 5 with 500 nits display, I use it at max brightness pretty much every time as soon as it gets slightly bright in the room, I'm gonna replace the laptop but scared of the 300 nits because I find my brightness at max for the most time.
Should I go for a 400 nits brightness tv it's 65 inches so please recommend ....
3:28 - I thought it makes huge difference but not really. Thank you
Hi. I bought Huawei matebook 14, finally. Do you have any suggestions? Thnx
Hi - I'm looking to buy a 2k 24" monitor and am essentially stuck between two options. Viewsonic vx2480-2k-shd and Lenovo L24q-35. Seems to me that the main difference between the two is that Lenovo has 300 nits vs Viewsonic's 250 nits. I will use it in a room with a lot of windows (I like light). What do you suggest getting? Should I pay around $50 more for the extra 50 nits of brightness here? Also Viewsonic is offering 5 years warranty vs 3 for Lenovo. So quite confused :) Please help!
In this case 250 nits is not enough. 300 is the lowest value to pick.
I have question in your experience,do these budget gaming or productivity laptops which cut costs in screen which have poor accuracy and poor panels used if you use these panels compared to a good display laptop which has high resolution in long usage does the budget laptops cause more eye strain (or headache)compared to the good laptop screens, sorry my question is quite long.
(I am planning to buy a laptop that has great screen but cut cost on other specs so...)
If you care about eye strain, I would stick with IPS LCD and make sure it has no PWM. That is your best bet. You also want to keep your contrast levels higher so the text is easier to read and have the brightness just right so you're not straining to see but you also don't have the light glaring at you.
Any suggestion how to easily find out the nits of a screen? HP for example have different displays for the same modell. But its not obvious which display it is.
My Alienware X15 laptop is rated for 300 nits but hits 400 nits, as Dell underestimated it. I keep it at about 70 percent brightness when gaming indoors on a bright room.
The ''reflection'' problem exists on matte too. If you tilt the display at certain angles, you're going to be greeted with botches of bright light spots on the display as it diffuses the light and makes it pretty hard to read the text.
Its a laptop. Not a desktop monitor. Just adjust the display/laptop a bit and you're good to go. I've never faced this reflection issue despite using a glossy OLED laptop and setting it at ~300nits.
We do need more glossy options on laptops since they produce better and sharper image quality compared to most matte displays.
LENOVO THINKPAD T15g Gen 2? or ASUS TUF DASH 2022. (they 2 have rtx 3070) which one is better for gamming?
Both SpyderX and i1Display would auto recommend around 200 cd/m^2 in a reasonably lit room, that's 200 nits. If you increase brightness to a very high level, it would have an adverse impact on colour accuracy. The most ideal environment for colour critical work is between 120 and 150 cd/m^2, using high brightness setting is a bad habbit.
Clearly you didn't watch the video. It talks about display requirements with respect to ambient light.
If you're outside in the sun, you need brighter displays, when in a dimly lit room, turn down the brightness like you see fit. Depends on your usage.
what about HP Envy x360 OLED display ? is that matt finish display? , anti-glare or anti-reflective ?
Would you recommend me Lenovo IdeaPad 3 gaming?
Am planning to buy
But most reviewers say is only 250 and not bright enough
Is there some common feature filter on computer retail websites that determines nits?
What if i add anti glare screen protector on glossy screen? Will it be same as its counterpart?
vg32v asus tuf or xg32vq witch one is better?
Excellent video and explanation. I am trying to find a good portable monitor now. Where did you buy the above light for your moniitor?

300 nits is enough - also for color accuracy. My LG Prof. Monitor ist limited to 350 nits but I operate it at 60 to 70 % in a light south faced room

830 bucks for only 300 nits not worth it
After being used to flagship smartphones no laptop is bright enough for outdoor use! I never had problems reading my phone screen in summer daylight through sun glasses since the Galaxy S7/S8 but even the best laptops today can't reach that brightness 🙄 or even a brightness that is usable without sun glasses. Even midrange phones these days beat them hands down.
The wires can't cary that much current for bigger screens.
Yeah not enough people talk about this... I had a laptop rated at 300nits but in use it only could do about 260nits... It was pretty bad.... even tho it was a 300hz panel...
Another thing that people don't realize is usually if you have bad brightness other things on the screen will also be bad.. like poor contrast and poor color gamut...
When you add up all those bad things yeah the laptop is "usable" but it's not really enjoyable to use or watch stuff on........
I upgrade the panel on my laptop and it's like having a new laptop...... Everything just looks better ...
Need the brightest available for a video teleprompter.
Is 118 nits on a monitor too bright in a dark room? I heard people say that 100 nits is too bright in darks rooms and that 50 nits is just right in dark rooms.
I'm not exactly sure. I think this is very very personal. I prefer a little bit of light in the monitor but very mild keyboard backlight.
@@w2best thx
The hell, do u live in a cave??
For outdoor environment under direct sunlight u should have at least 1000 nits full screen brightness for text documents and 1500 nits for movies or videos
In my opinion 350 n with a matte screen is totally enough. I never watched a movie in bright sunlight though. :D

You do that with a brightness meter, the hardware. No way to do it with a software.
Hello what’s a good brightness level for 320 nits for monitor keep up the great videos
Not sure what the question is! :)
My zowie monitor has a peak brightness of 320 nits I was wondering what’s the best percentage to for it thanks
300 nits is absolutely useless to me in a room with any light at all. It's the sole reason I returned the HP x360 14c 14in Chromebook, now, it cost 800 Euro's wasn't cheap, lovely machine but completely let down by the rubbish 300 Nit screen. My 8 year old Dell inspiron has a much better screen.
I went to a PC store yesterday to buy a new laptop and they mostly have Intel chips, I want AMD because they're a lot faster, and they only had 8 GB Memory. Even those that had AMD were mostly 8GB unless you spend 1000 Euro's +.
The screen on the Galaxy Tab S7+ was much better than the screens on the majority of the laptops I saw in this large PC store with the exception of the Macbooks and the New Surface pro 8 which is a nice machine with a really nice screen but it's ridiculously expensive for the spec and again, only intel CPU.
Why has Intel so much dominance on the laptop market ?
These days I can't just buy a laptop with 8GB ram and buy more ram and install it, I have to go to the manufacturers site to see if the ram is even upgradeable in the first place. I think laptop manufacturers should be forced to make known whether the memory or even storage of every laptop can be upgraded.
Whoever thought buying a laptop in 2021 almost 2022 could be so difficult ? surely it should be the complete opposite ?
Sorry, bit of a rant there but I had hoped that I could have walked into a major PC store and buy a decent laptop in 2021 that costs less than 1500 Euro's. And researching screen brightness brought me here :-)
what about color gamut, like 62.5% vs 100% sRBG
Thank you! That video is on my list to make, but it's much harder to showcase on camera. :( You want 100% srgb. That's the short answer.

Way too dark
How do I do a nits test?
For this you need a brightness meter. Relatively expensive tool
Under 900$ dollars which leptops is best specially in display wise
The ideapad 5 pro has a very interesting one. High resolution and also high refresh rate while still being bright! :)
Assume that when you do the comparisons - they all all turned up to maximum ?
yes of course.
better to go with a mat finish because I think the device will use more energy for a higher nitt-setting. Energy consumption on a laptop is something we all want to see reduced.
Is 250 nits enough for normal office work ??

how to find the number of my brightness nits in my laptop
Either you check the spec or if you want to be 100% sure you buy a brightness meter, but they are pricey...
That's one of the many reasons why I am using Macbooks and iMac. The current M1 16" I have, can do stable 1000 nits brightness and it can goes up to 1600 nits. And because my sight is not really perfect, its actually quite bad and my eyes requires a very bright environment to be able to see something, I have real problem to use laptops with Windows that has bellow 600 nits I think? This obstacle basically forcing me to stay at Apple ecosystem...
Marketing bs. You'll never see the 1600 most apps limit to 1000, in direct sunlight. Overheats after a few minutes and defaults back to 500 and 250 nits indoors. You might get a few seconds of burst 1600 nits viewing an xdr video. Plus it will destroy your battery
Why are phones able to push 1000 nits without a problem but a big ass "gaming" monitor in a comparable price point goes up to 250-300. I know the screen is bigger and thus more expensive than the small phone screen but with a phone, you don't only get a screen, you get the SoC, cameras, Bluetooth and NFC modules, software etc...
Maybe smaller screens are easier to boost brightness?
