A few suggestions to consider - Prep welds a bit more aggressively (wire brush, flap disc and solvents/cleaner) and leave a small gap on your fitted butt welds. Angle grinder with flap disc an easier approach than bench grinder to remove excess material. Overlapping stitch welds is an approach you may wish to consider to minimize heat and not have to worry about travel along relatively small dia pipe.
