- B&H had the Zhiyun Crane M2 on sale for $199 just after Christmas, so I picked it up and have been playing around with it a lot. It's an incredibly piece of gear with just a few minor flaws. This extensive review covers just about everything you need to know when using it with a Sony RX100 VII attached to it.
Here are links to the various things discussed in the video:

19:29 It’s a virtual joystick, so HOLD your finger on the white dot and move it to one of the arrows. Good video!
I actually mounted the M7 to the other plate hole and i can easily use the charging cable without the port being blocked. Just re adjust the weights.
I bought this a couple years ago but haven't used it much. Coming into some projects where I need gimbal quality stab. Thanks for the excellent refresher video on my gimbal, you explain things very clearly.
Nice review! FYI SmallRig makes a replacement plate for the Crane M2 that allows you to use your camera with a standard quick release plate that you won't have to remove frequently.
Excellent review! Thank you for doing it. As a side note, why would you care what others think? It’s a great piece of gear, us it and don’t even think about what someone might be thinking.
Tried dragging the white point in the mobile app to control the gimbal? I‘d expect it to work this way, not like arrows.
One of the best presentations I have seen here in a long time. Good job.
Great review and spot on with my own experience. I dont regret buying it but its not perfect.
All the pros and most of the cons are mentioned here. Some other cons I have experienced with my RX100VA are:
- Forget about using it very quickly. Quick release doesn't mean quick in position again.
- When taking shots from a real low angle whilst standing it behaves funny. (Arm down) It tends to move left and right quickly and ruin the shot. Not sure if it is due to balancing.
- Putting it back in the box is too much a hassle. I only lock it with the red switch and put it in my bag realising it is a bit fragile that way.
- The record button doesn't always work in wifi. Havent found the reason yet.
- After changing settings (motor speed) it goes into sleep mode and doesn't wake up without turning off and on again.
- When moving too fast (e.g 180 degree spin) it sometimes loses its mind and spins sideways.
- when walking around a subject keeping the image centered is a challenge and not very smooth. I hope a next version can also lock onto a subject using the camera footage.
Most of these things you can take into consideration when getting to know the gimbal better, but I didnt get the footage I wanted early on as a result. Main message practice a lot before you take it on your trip around the world or use it at the wedding.
Hi Brian, thanks for the video! I have the same setup (Sony RX100 VII + Crane M2 + ZY Play App). I was curious to see what you have to say. At 19:34 you mention that you couldn’t get the buttons in the ZY Play App to work. Actually the do work depending on the mode the gimbal is in. So if you switch let’s say to “Lock” mode than you should be able to steer the gimbal. But you have to hold down the finger on the joystick in the middle and slide your finger (while keeping contact to the display) to the side (and not press on the arrows like you show in the video). And the zoom and record would work too if you pair the app via WiFi with the camera (icon at the top in the app). You can see how the WiFi pairing works on my channel in the Zhiyun Crane M2 video at timestamp 11:20. Hope that helps.
Interesting. I didn’t try different modes - I was always in PF mode. It never occurred to me because it let me roll, but nothing else so I didn’t see any correlation.
@@BrianGreenstone In PF mode you just can move up and down and do the rolling. In Lock mode you can also move left and right. But you must slide the virtual joystick with your finger and not click on the arrows. By the way: you can change the mode in the ZY Play App when you click on the small button on the right side of the record button.
Chris ur just another hidden genius 😉
I'm sure you've discovered this by now. With the app, you don't press down on the arrows to move the camera. Put your finger on the white dot and drag it up, down, left or right. Overall a very good tutorial. Thanks
Great review video 👍. I got mine a while back also for $199 because it was such a great deal. Very happy to have the gadget.
With the awesome stabilization of the rx100 vii and a gimbal the video looks super smooth. Thanks!!
9:39 you want to pull it max while using and push totally max when store, so no actually rebalancing is needed
The best review about Crane m2 I saw. Keep up the good work 💯
Very nice, and timely. I’m just about to take crane out of the box. Perfect! Thanks Brian
@13:17 starts the explanations for the Modes. Thank you, the perfect run thru!
This is the best review I've seen on the M2 and I've seen a lot of them. Great job. Just subscribed. Looking forward to more. Thx
Serious question - is the dim mode only related to Wifi? I think according to the maual the screen on the RX100 is goes dim in 4K mode?
Do you use steadyshot inside the camera at the same time with the gimbal or the gimbal stabilisation only is enough?
First thanx for the review without just telling how great it is and that it's the best.... Most astonishing: the function for loading the RX100 while it's on the gimbal. I do own the RX100 M7 and I will buy this gimbal.
Second: have you ever tried to move that small white dot on your smartphone instead of pressing on the arrows?
Third: Nice Dogs!
Thank you Brian, that is very useful!
Amazing review and talk Brian, i was thinking of buying this for my canon m50 but will I get hassle when using my LCD screen out and adding a rode mic for balance etc when vlogging
Crane M2 With Sony RX 100 VII only video....no picture. Any help? Thanks
LMAO! My exact thought.. "If you walk around with this thing people will look at you funny". Great review! A few things swayed me away from buying one. I video long car races and of course the Sony battery is tiny and doesn't last so I film whilst being connected to a battery pack. Can't do it with this gimbal. Also, as stated, the wifi dims the screen. Major problem as I film in bright daylight and it is already difficult to see. Add to that, if I don't use wifi I cannot zoom in and out with the button on the M2.
Great video! I totally agree with u the plate should be separated by 2
you can control the gimbal in lock mode with your mobile phone. then synonymous work timelaps pans.
Really informative video. Well done.
Brian, great review - I am considering purchasing the M2 for use with my RX100vii and appreciate your coverage of pros AND cons. One question - what are your RX100 focus settings for your run and gun shots with your dogs?
I’m pretty sure I had it on full auto.
@@BrianGreenstone Was it 4K downsampled to 1080p for RUclips?
Have you been able to get the M2 to take photos and not just video? If so can you advise how?
I’ve never tried. I’m not sure why anyone would want to do that.
@@BrianGreenstone People would want to do that because the camera is already attached to the gimbal and they want to take a photo, obviously. Or they specifically want to use the gimbal as an extension or selfie stick for photos. Could you try and let us know the result? It would be really helpful.
Very nice review! Very pro! I never put my Zhiyun in the case, and have only ever locked when not using it. On a trip to London in 2019, I usually left my camera (a Lumix LX100 at the time) attached to the Zhiyun, and kept it in a simple soft carrying case, videoing all over central London. I've since bought a Sony RX100VA and a Sony a7C. For the a7C, I bought a Zhiyun Weebill S, which I have yet to use (damned pandemic!), but hope to in the coming months sometime. I'm guessing the weevil S behaves similarly to the Crane M2? Thank you!
I bought this about a month ago it's a great piece of equipment I'm very dissatisfied with the storage container my removu GoPro gimbal is built with great quality but comes in a very sturdy blow molded box with customized cutouts he could have forgotten about that crap strap and given us a better box
Is it suitable for canon 200d ii
Have you seen the small Bluetooth remote Sony has for this camera?
P1BT
Should work well with this ;)
In order to use the app to turn the gimbal you have to put the gimbal to L mode. So you're doing something wrong.
Great review. That USB port being blocked is really a shame. I don’t have the RX100 VII but I’m considering the ZV1. How long does the Sony battery last in the RX100 while shooting video?
I get maybe 40 minutes of recording from one battery, but that’s probably with a lot of pausing. I would think maybe 30 minutes of nonstop recording.
Good review have same camera but with a cage will it work if kept cage on.
Nizami
Why on Earth nobody wants to test how stable is the footage while the camera is in full zoom mode. This is the primary reason for using this setup. Zooming in, panning, zooming out.The second test would be in low light conditions. While walking for example. Well. In all other cases you'll be better off with the Gopro and similar action cameras.
ZY Play app (necessary to connect camera to gimbal) will not run on Android 9. The IOS version runs on iPhone 10, but cannot detect or connect to gimbal using Bluetooth or WIFI. The ZY Play app doesn't have a selection for the Crane M2.
This means that the features that convinced me to purchase the gimbal such as Start/Stop Recording, Zoom, etc. on the gimbal is useless.
The gimbal works okay, but functions that SHOULD be available on the gimbal MUST be accomplished on the camera itself.
There is a charging port on the motor, what is that for?
That’s so you can power your camera off of the gimbal.
19:35 it's a joystick you have to hold and pull it in directions.
Did you listen the motor sound during your footage
What motor sound?
@@BrianGreenstone like the feiyu tech G6 so.many people complain about it when are walking the motors gimbal makes a lot of noise you can even hear it I think the Hohem you don't hear nothing during your footage ....I.hope you understand my comment see comment about the Feiyu tech G6
@@jorbontabugsy I have one and the motors are quiet. Then again the mics on the RX100 aren't too great so not sure how it would be when usong a better external one. As I have a VA it doesnt make a difference for me.
Great video! I sure hope Sony comes with a firmware update for the brightness of the screen. Some other things I don`t like is not being able to tilt the SONY`S backscreen because then it hits the Crane arm in some angles. I had to put my SONY RX100 VI in the position for the largest camera because I have an external mic, the positive thing is that I now have the ability to attach a USB-cable for external charge 🙂.
At one time, gimbals were more like $11, 900!
Any motor sound
No, totally silent
Great review. It has so many issues so I will pass on this toy.
Finding it a nightmare setting it up.
It’s a pain the first time, but once you’ve got most of it set it’s easy the next time.
@@BrianGreenstone Thanks for advice.
