This is a vintage live performance by Jeannie C. Riley of her hit song, "Harper Valley P.T.A.", written by Tom T. Hall.
Riley was raised in Anson, Texas. This song immediately became a gigantic hit for Riley and went to number one on both the Billboard Pop and Country charts, a feat not repeated until 1981 when Dolly Parton released "9 to 5". Riley and the song became an overnight sensation, and the song earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and the Country Music Association Single of the Year award. Riley also became one of the very few country artists ever nominated in the major pop Grammy categories of "Best New Artist" and "Record of the Year".
The song was a phenomenon which led to Riley making country music history in 1969 as the first female vocalist to have her own major network variety special, "Harper Valley U.S.A." Then in 1978 there was "Harper Valley PTA" the motion picture, and in 1981 "Harper Valley PTA" the television show.

Sorry my friend. Much love!
Sorry for your Mum. Your Mum had excellent taste in music. I lovee this song as a teenager in the 60s and 70s listening on the radio.
Can we also give some love to that slide guitar player? Those are some incredible riffs n fills by any country or rock n roll standards from any era!! Perfect!! And of course, a great song and voice and a beauty singing it!!
I was thinking how AMAZING that guitarist is on slide!
He Kills It,,🙏👊🦊
Salute to your ABILITY to get ALL THE NOTES !! He izzz GREAT !
You need something like that in a simple, repetitive story-song like this.
Yes!
I grew up in the Netherlands, born in 1963. They played this song regularly on the radio as I grew up. Not speaking English as a kid I had no clue what it was about but I knew she was pissed off by the tonation of her voice. I moved to the US in 1990 but never heard that song again until I was driving around in Tallahassee a few weeks ago. I recognized this song from my childhood and listened carefully to the text. She sure was pissed off about something, the Harper Valley PTA! They don’t write songs like that anymore.
Hello,how are you doing..?
Hypocrites! In any language.
As a kid this song was catchy, as an adult it’s completely real, a lot of people casting stones when they shouldnt

I can't believe how your daughter is the exact picture of you. What a true blessing.❤
This always reminds me of my mom. Not that she fought the PTA but a woman raising a boy alone in the 60's and 70's had to be tough. Mom is gone, Im grown but she never complained and she took very good care of us even though we lived on a waitress salary. Josette B Medford, my mom, was one bad broad.
Me too, raised 2 boys on a waitress wages, divorced and I had to tangle with a smart aleck teacher trying to embarrass my child over his clothes in front of everyone. I socked it to that rude high fuluting b****, better be looking at that mini skirt she had on you could see everything she had but picking on kids because their parent was struggling to provide new fancy clothes.
Awww 🥺😔
She had to be. Good for both of you.
I started working in a restaurant when I was 14 in the early 80s and new plenty of waitresses raising their kids alone and I always admired them.
Had to be ..... my mother was too she could change flat tires bang on the battery seal the radiator she drove Roadrunners Javelins Mercurys she had Tavern Jackets from every bar in town with her name on them she did so much with so little for so long she was a legend she ratted her hair up high with chips of razor blades stuck in her hair she’s gone now but the memories remain.........
My son plays this everytime he comes and picks me up. He knows i loved this song when i was a teenager.
Sooo sweet❤
I love the way she looks surprised when they start applauding. She glances over at the audience, kind of surprised. So sweet.
Great eye. It was well deserved. A perfect song against hypocrisy.
Gracious lady
Bless her 🎉
That spontaneous applause & her reaction never fails to make me smile, every time I watch this video...which is a lot. This is a terrific time capsule of a different time in music history.
They couldn’t have found a more perfect woman to sing this song WOW !
What a Hottie!
They couldn't have found a more perfect women to play the lead in the movie.
This song is timeless, still fun in 2024 to hear how she "socked it to the Harper Valley PTA"!
I am sorry, but this is PURE CLASSIC....legendary. I don't care what type of music you listen to, this is one that has stood the test of time and epitomizes what music is all about.
yeppers it surely is..
There is no sorry about this song and performance. She hits it out of the park!
Generally I don't like Country & Western. This is a great song but if they could get rid of that country guitar style in the original it would have been a far better recording. The original even had an organ in the backup. I do love the way the song picks up tempo as it goes along.
Then I sure don't see why you're sorry.
Just good music.
Jeanie C. Riley was such a doll. The way she delivered this song was just great!

As young girls growing up in 70's small town Kentucky we were looked down on for Momma being divorced. We sang this for her then and now that she's gone, we sing it to remember her.
That's what we were talking about today girlfriends at the table . I played this song for them and told them how my mom sang this with me and told me it's a girl power song....iv always sang it in my head whenever I have had to set someone straight ! We're in KY girl 🎉💕🎉💕🎉
Deanna, would this song be another way of warning neighbors not to gossip about each other?
ruclips.net/video/xktXglFD6MY/видео.html
I went to school in the 70's also, and I only had one kid in my whole class who lived with only his mother. My mother when she came to school functions or would pick me up and she would see him would whisper to me in a hush tone, "Is he the one without a father?" Funny, how times change, now half the class of kids, come from broken homes and it's normal.
Sorry for your loss and keep those memories, God bless
From one KY girl to another...my mom was a widow, her best friend moved in with us to watch my brother and I while she worked nights. Boy, no one understood that; rumor mill started that they were lesbians. As a young girl that was hard to understand. I lost friends over that. Her best friend ended up moving out years later to get married. But no one ever apologized for thinking otherwise. Remember the sitcom Kate and Allie?
You can thank Tom T. Hall for this gem, still listening in 2024.

The '60s and '70s was the Golden Age for pop ballads, a music form almost unheard of these days. There's Harper Valley PTA, Ode to Bill Joe, Little Willy, The Night Chicago Died, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Midnight Train to Georgia, and I'll probably remember more as the day wears on.
How about “The Night They Drove ol’ Dixie Down”?
Yes, these are all great songs - I would add to this list, Tammy Wynette's, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." When I was divorced, some many years back, I wrote in the "memo" (on my check to my lawyer) "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" (My divorce was a friendly one, thank God). Jeannie C Riley is a legend for delivering real messages!
I was a freshman in highschool when this song broke to the top of the hit parade! Very rare (in 1968) when a country-western hit would commandeer the regular top-40 hit parade charts. We LOVED the song; couldn't hear it enough!

This accurately describes life in a small town. No matter how old it gets. It's spot on.
Yep. Though small towns also have perks the gossip machine is one of the bad things. I live here in Colorado Springs and nobody is ever outside or just wants to chat. New guy moved in about five years ago and I said hi, the idiot told me I don't need friends. I laughed and said, well if I see your house being robbed I will remember that as I don't dial 911. What a twit. At least he had the good sense to close his mouth and look stunned as I turned around and walked away.
My mother sings this exactly like this , she's English and 82 years old , she used to sing it in the club for beer for my dad 😳
I was in junior high (known as middle school today) in Napa CA when this song was popular on the country charts.
