I heartily agree with you on this subject, Shaunee - we need to get back to a good and noble root, if you will, in popular music - performers with talent, good songwriters, great production staff; in other words, let's make music the way it should be made - the real way!
This song was extremely popular when it came out and was country but it crossed all genres in popular music. I was a kid when it came out in the late 60's. Everyone was singing along to this song because it was so popular.
The pot calling out the kettle. Hypocrisy is still alive and well today. Put the light on it whenever it rears it's ugly head. It can't survive the light.
The '60s and '70s was the Golden Age for pop ballads, a music form almost unheard of these days. There's Harper Valley PTA, Ode to Bill Joe, Little Willy, The Night Chicago Died, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, Midnight Train to Georgia, and I'll probably remember more as the day wears on.
Yes, these are all great songs - I would add to this list, Tammy Wynette's, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." When I was divorced, some many years back, I wrote in the "memo" (on my check to my lawyer) "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" (My divorce was a friendly one, thank God). Anyway, it seems my "song-joke" went over his head - he never questioned it in any event. Cheers to all!
Jeannie C Riley had the most sincere smile of any performer I ever met. I briefly encountered her in 1974 when I was an 18 yr old kid. No fake smile, as genuine as they come.
I was 11 when this song came out. Back then, I just knew I liked the song. I really didn't get what the song was about. many years later, when I heard it again I was cracking up.
I never understood this song as a child but I could still tell that delicious, delicious tea was being spilled all over the place in this story. It's even better now.
Yes, better. My mom loved this song because she was a divorced woman in the south! I and everyone else loved her! PTA across America can suck mine and learn a huge lesson. Not a reference.
I went to a little country school in rural Georgia in the late 60s and early and they would play this song at every P.T.A function. This song brings back very fond memories of that time in my life.
This song was still popular when I was a little kid, and she reminds me of my late momma. She actually looked quite a bit like her, and was a firecracker too. Some mommas you just don't mess with.
I was in junior high (known as middle school today) in Napa CA when this song was popular on the country charts. A new student from the Midwest lip synced it at our first rally and we were so embarrassed for her since nobody listened to this “square, hick” music. Complete silence when her performance was over. I think back about that girl now and understand what an amazing brave person she had to have been
In high school Down the road a piece Our Government Teacher Was a long haired hippy freak Who Played bass for a Skynyrd tribute band. We use to mess with him cause He used a pick. So my buddy Shropshire, and I Taught him how to pluck, and slap the bass. I guess we were a little more Tolerant in TheV.
Man, this brings back memories when I was just a kid! My mama would drop a whole stack of vinyl on our stereo, turn it up and I would help her clean and wash dishes and clothes and we would sing along at the top of our voices. My step-father would turn off the TV to listen to us! Good times!

I love it more now than i did in the 60,s
Worse gang of hyprocrits today. No shame for the MAGA cultist and their ORANGE little dick leader.
dude on the steel is handling his business
He's solid!
That is a Dobro resonator guitar.
@@Longmiestr Was about to mention that. Correct.
She was beautiful.
THIS IS A TIMELESS SONG. BEAUTIFUL QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC ALMOST 90 YEARS YOUNG IN A FEW DAYS.
WTF!?!? She's 76!
I absolutely love this song
Ditto! Loved this song for decades!
Jeannie was the perfect choice to do this song.
I have always wondered something about this song: is it a true story?
MrAmesj but you do know she didn’t write it right
I don't know, you haven't seen my wife do karaoke.
Tom T. Hall wrote it. Jeannie worked by the studio and they asked her to do it. I think she did it in one cut. It was her song.
@ angry much? It's a song about calling out small town hypocrisy.
Always always loved this song iconic!
i love jeannie c riley love this classic song it sounds so great in 2024
I can't believe how your daughter is the exact picture of you. What a true blessing.❤
Don't see and never will see the likes of her again
Love this song so cool
She is such a beautiful woman. The song is so well done from such a little sweet heart ❤❤❤
Hello,how are you doing today
My husband went to see her, in Goose bay and said, she was a great performer and said HAPPY VALLEY.
Bullshit
@@zacharyallen8767 That is what he told me. Goose Bay
@@zacharyallen8767 He lied, only St John's
@@zacharyallen8767 I LOVE YOU ZACHARY ALLEN OF THIS WORLD.
Hello Shelly 👋... Are is the weather over there now, And how are you doing today, I guess all is well with you and your family?
In her prime, Jeannie Riley was a super attractive woman. She is still alive in her late 70s.
Now she is not because she is old?
@@GregNormal-c2g No problem. I love the song and I love her voice.
Riley is a smok'n southern Fox!
Never stopped listening
My mama had this on a 45 record. Loved it as a kid and 50 years later I still love it. Great memories.
How about “The Night They Drove ol’ Dixie Down”?
Yes, these are all great songs - I would add to this list, Tammy Wynette's, "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." When I was divorced, some many years back, I wrote in the "memo" (on my check to my lawyer) "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" (My divorce was a friendly one, thank God). Anyway, it seems my "song-joke" went over his head - he never questioned it in any event. Cheers to all!
R.I.P Tom T Hall who wrote this and so many other meaningful stories set to music. 20 Aug. 2021
My memory is great so here’s another song Harper Valley PTA
RIP Tom T.Hall,Ky native, singer, and, songwriter of hits like "Harper Valley PTA".
Jeannie C Riley had the most sincere smile of any performer I ever met. I briefly encountered her in 1974 when I was an 18 yr old kid. No fake smile, as genuine as they come.
Absolutely, I met her also, she was so sweet and kind, I felt as if we had been friends forever, her smile and caring way was as genuine as it gets.
I was 11 when this song came out. Back then, I just knew I liked the song. I really didn't get what the song was about. many years later, when I heard it again I was cracking up.
Hello,how are you doing today
543 people were members of the Harper Valley PTA.
Lol.
1.8k people stayed too long at Kelly's Bar.
Jackie Howard yea, probably
This widow was a commando
Jackie Howard Fucking great comment ! that’s just cracked me right up !
Every few years my wife has a few too many and does a great cover of this song.
You should RUclips it!!
TDB lucky man
video it
Record it and put it on RUclips man I get it's the DBs
TDB - I would encourage your wife to drink more often.
I never understood this song as a child but I could still tell that delicious, delicious tea was being spilled all over the place in this story. It's even better now.
It wasn't tea
Yes, better. My mom loved this song because she was a divorced woman in the south! I and everyone else loved her! PTA across America can suck mine and learn a huge lesson. Not a reference.
Me! I'm still listening to it! Jeannie C Riley! In my era!
I went to a little country school in rural Georgia in the late 60s and early and they would play this song at every P.T.A function. This song brings back very fond memories of that time in my life.
The guitarist's jacket is kicking some serious arse!
That is Dobro hirdy6. Just saying.
My goodness, l still love this song because nothing has changed since the song was made. We still in 2021 have the same hypocrites now.
100%
Thank you.
I love that.
I meant that was cool. I miss my mom. 2 1/2 years. Let's talk. I'm leaving for the Appalachian trail.. got three months before departure everyone
This song was still popular when I was a little kid, and she reminds me of my late momma. She actually looked quite a bit like her, and was a firecracker too. Some mommas you just don't mess with.
A GREAT SONG BY A GREAT SINGER AND SONG WRITER TOM T. HALL. R.I.P.

Jeannie C Riley is a legend for delivering real messages!
I recall a girl in elementary school was able to sue her at the Birmingham Fair I was so upset because I wanted to hear her sing
Man, this brings back memories when I was just a kid! My mama would drop a whole stack of vinyl on our stereo, turn it up and I would help her clean and wash dishes and clothes and we would sing along at the top of our voices. My step-father would turn off the TV to listen to us! Good times!
